I thought about that before , but Thelma Lou was too sweet a girl to be hurt that bad , I think the fun girls were enough for her , plus the mystery of Juanita remains for us to ponder even now 🤔
I can imagine if that show was filmed today. (Thelma- looking at Barney's cellphone: Barney? What are all these calls and texts to this woman Juanita?)
In practically any television show where the operator was spoken to in the show, her name was Sarah. The operator in Petticoat Junction and Green Acres was named Sarah.
@gj4578 Petticoat Junction and Green Acres were produced by Paul Henning. The Andy Griffith Show was produced by Sheldon Leonard.I've seen many shows produced by different people where the telephone operator was named Sarah.
Retired from Ma Bell here. There was a reason you never saw Sarah. Think about it…in a small town you never, ever saw the ‘Hello Girls’, the name we gave our switchboard operators, they were always just there for you. We were a group of people I’ve always called ‘invisipeople’. The phone guy, the operator, the meter reader, all these service folk are constantly operating in the background of your life to make it easier. We see you all the time but you never or rarely notice us. Truth is, we liked it that way!
@@Sharks0770 I think it was just up the sidewalk from the Sheriff's station because I remember seeing Barney walk to it. It was the episode where he goes in and sees Ernest T. Bass after he escaped from the jail cell, but I also know we see Barney, Thelma Lou, Helen, and Andy in the diner as well, as opposed to another diner they said was out on the highway, so I always assumed that was the Bluebird Diner.
I think it was better to let us imagine what these characters looked liked. Thelma Lou should have borrowed Aunt Bee's umbrella 🌂 🙄 😒 to use on Barney. Shame on him. 😂 Praying 🙏 for you Bob 🙏
Oh Bob, meant to tell you that I hope you are safe and hunkered down for the horrific winter storm Kentucky is now experiencing. Gonna be a long one.. Please stay safe!
Mayberry had lots of "bad guys" over the years. Many made repeat appearances. I think it would make an interesting series of videos to focus on each of these "bad guys" one at a time. Maybe give a glimpse of other roles they had in TV or movies. Thanks for everything you do.
Hi Bob. I can appreciate Griffith's colorful response but I continue to maintain it was also a matter of budget. Not having to cast and pay another actress for either role but still getting the screen time and role-play, jokes, etc. Thanks for all you do on the channels!
@robbkiker6861 Budget, pay another actor? What are you talking about? The color episodes' story lines were phoned in. They were terrible !! Nothing to do with budgets or other actors. Did you even read my post or is this just a generic response?
You could do a segment on classic TV about all the unseen characters. They include Carlton the doorman on Rhoda, Norm's wife Vera, and Ralph Furley's brother. Others we didn't see right away such as Jenny Piccolo and Kimmy Gibbler. It would have disappointed a lot of people had they saw Sarah and Juanita. We've seen from radio that some people look different than their voices. Barney's first scene in Return to Mayberry had him on the phone to Jaunita. Sarah was probably retired by then.
They remain in our imaginations along with Carlton the Doorman (Rhoda), Charlie (Charlie’s Angels), Debbie Wolowitz (The Big Bang Theory) and even voiceless like Maris (Frasier).
It’s never too late to do a spinoff series about Sarah. Even now. I bet she had a colorful and interesting backstory and home life in Mayberry. No need for any AGS characters to appear. And it’s all set in the 60s.
Actually, Sarah did appear one time. It was in the short piece that came before the end credits (I forget what that's called) and she was played by a 40ish white woman. She and a couple of other characters were having an animated discussion with Andy. Those bits are usually cut from the syndicated versions for more commercial time. I only saw it once. Also, if it wasn't Juanita, who was the waitress that Andy and Barney both left a tip for in one episode when normally only one of them did? Been a long time since I've watched the show regularly, so I don't remember the particular episodes.
Great info!! I know you are a classic rock guy; can you do a segment from Gomer Pyle USMC where he sings "blowing in the wind" in honor of the new Bob Dylan movie? LOL I noticed one of the hippies is meathead from All In the Family!! LOL keep up the good work...
Sounds like we never really knew Don Knotts. I always felt bad for Andy's real life wife, who he cheated on with Helen Krump. Barbara Griffith wanted to be an actress but he only gave her very minimal parts keeping her at arms length from the show. It was reported they had really bad and loud fights. Allegedly, Andys bandaged up hand was from him putting his fist through a wall during one of their fights. Although on the show he said he had an interaction with some prisoners. Barbara sadly died of cancer. Barbara Griffith was only 53 years old when she died. It sounds like her marriage to Andy put her through hell at the end.
What about the fact, no one knows anything about the actor that played Mr, Schwamp. He would show up now and then, the cast didn't know much about the man.
Even in "Return to Mayberry" Barney was speaking to Juanita on the phone. I wonder if Sarah was still around then or did Mayberry modernize their phone system
Also hovering around that existence for awhile were Goober ( before his Season 4 first physical appearance) and Remona (Romeena lol) and Otis' wife (after their first appearances). Still unsure of Floyd's natural status: he had a wife, daughter and 2 sons, then he was "a gay blade". Love Mayberry continuity. 😂 And MASH is worse.
I hate to burst your bubble but Juanita was shown in one of the early episodes of the first season. I forget which one but I think it might have been the one where they were going to make a movie in Mayberry but the town would not cut down a tree but her father was all for it. Andy, of course, persuaded the town not to do it.
There's an episode where Andy is giving Barney a hard time and refers to Juanita as "Everyone's Juanita"....I felt sorry for her, even never seeing her!
Ole' Barn was a ladies' man...or at least he thought so. Let's see, there was Thelma Lou, Juanita, the gal that tried to sue him for Breach of Promise, Miss Rosemary, Skippy the fun girl, Hilda Mae...am I missing any? Barn did alright!
I think the reason we never saw Juanita or Sarah is because if we did, they would have to be paid as actors. That's why the Darling boys never spoke. But with Sarah, that would have been more realistic had there been 3 or 4 switchboard operators at different times and days. Another unseen character should have been Andy's departed wife. Give her the name Donna. There should have been pictures of Donna, and everybody in town should have talked about Donna in fond memories of her, and talked about Donna all the time, and told us about her. Donna should have been a major unseen character. That episode with the class reunion with Andy's high school girlfriend, the girlfriend should have been Donna's sister, to show us what Donna had been like. The Andy Griffith show would have been even more memorable, had Donna been in it
I've wondered about that. I think Andy was correct. They would have been a dissappointment. I always thought of Thelma Lou being the pretty, good girl, and Juanita being not that great looking, making her a little more desperate and likely to have looser morals.Juanaita or no, I certainly don't think Barney was very experienced. Great video.
Caught an episode of TAGS this morning. It was the one where Aunt Bea learns to fly out of the Burbank Airport. So unfunny and cringe that it depressed me. Talk about a show losing it's way !! All the color episodes need to be burned and never spoken of again.
