- Take down your fishing pole and meet me at the fishing hole, where today we'll be taking a look at the classic cars of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show. Automobiles played an important part in the show. In fact, several of the best episodes were written around cars and the people who were driving them. So let’s take a gander at some of these fine machines, and the roles they played.
Andy Taylor is the widower sheriff of the small, sleepy North Carolina town of Mayberry. Andy and son Opie live with Aunt Bee, who takes care of the family. Andy's deputy is his bumbling but neurotically hilarious cousin, Barney Fife. Among Andy's Mayberry friends is the town's resident barber, Floyd.

My favorite car from this show was Aunt Bee’s Sunliner convertible. Beautiful car
A great "bundle deal" would have been Miss Peggy (Joanna Moore) and the stunning '62 Thunderbird her dad bought her. Both were beautiful and purred like kittens, especially Miss Peg with that"southern belle" drawl that could melt butter.❤️
Peggy was awesomely appealing
That 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB they were looking at is now worth about 3.3 million. Original cost in 1966 $10,000
Opey missed a great investment opportunity lol.
It’s hard to believe there were brown Ferraris, but I remember them.
@@Porsche996driverThe insurance paymenrts and repair costs on a Ferrari would break Opie's piggy bank.
Back in 1966.....$10k was a ridiculous amount of money for a damned car.
I grew up in a $12k house.
@@jstravelers4094
$100,000 in today’s dollars.
The solid Turquoise "1961" Edsel belong to a couple who lived in Corona. The license plate was PPP 556.
Aunt Bea's '55 Sunliner has a Fordomatic, but in the script she can't drive it because it's a standard!
This is one of the reasons I like watching Perry Mason and Andy Griffith they always had the top model T-Birds such a beautiful Ford cars.
Perry Mason also used Lincolns, Mercurys and Edsels to great extent.
I've been around cars since the day I was born. I'm 63 years old now. Love this video.
9:51 This is astonishing. Ford was engaged in a life and death boardroom war with Ferrari in 1966. It's mind-blowing that Ford didn't raise the roof with the show's producers over this segment featuring a Ferrari.
Peggy:
Best girlfriend
Best attitude
Best southern voice
Best car
VERY GREAT VIDEO!!! THX...
I still almost wet my pants every time I hear Gomer read off the long list of what's wrong with Barney's first car.
Me after buying my first car lol
It is a true lol moment.
Same! 😂
And I’d give her a good wash too!
That stuff would sooo easy to fix today, and you'd have a MINT 1954 Customline Fordor!
These are really a trip! The way you use voice-generation to mimic the voices of the actors is unique and adds a lot to the appeal. Here's some trivia about The Andy Griffith Show: All of the exteriors were filmed on the "Forty Acres" back lot in Culver City, which was used for many movies and TV shows. Sometimes, there's an inadvertent tell in a shot. For example, in the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever," the crew of the Enterprise walks down a street on the same set as TAGS, complete with "Floyd's Barber Shop" painted on one of the windows. Some exteriors on Hogan's Heroes barely show just the edge of Wally's gas station at the end of the road. Thanks for posting this.
Kidd you have brought back many memories of things of the past of the things that you put here today. For my friend and I met in 1959 grade school. For he and I always kept in contact for many years until I got out of the Corps in late 1985. For we both had the love of cars, for we had found an old 55 Jag XK 140, for he and I had built that car together for 4 yr's from the ground up and 3 months later after we had completed it my brother died from a heart attack .But there is one thing that you must understand that my brother was black and I am white. But one thing is for sure that we of all colors will always stand together under this Flag of the US. For I know this true for all my brothers under the Red white and blue. Old , Master Gunnery SGT USMC.
For heaven's sake.
No time for race BS in the service. Especially officers school.
No special favors for being a minority.....and everyone knows it.
Officers are all vetted based on ability.....nothing else.
All colors wash out.....because it's HARD!
I am a big fan of the Andy Griffith show, and I watch it quite often, thank you for this very interesting and well-presented video.
One of my favorite episodes is "The Case of the Punch in the Nose," (Barney is at his best in this one).
Great video and impersonations on the VO. My favorites is the '61 T-Bird and the '63 Ford Custom patrol car.
Yeah, I suppose it was a Custom, and not Galaxie .
I know right? I thought it was Don himself! awesome
NW20............I wonder if Andy ordered it with the 427 dual quad 425 hp ???
Actually Iv'e just had another look, the '63 has Galaxie trim , must be a Galaxie.
@@dannycalley7777 He should have , If he wanted to have a chance of catching Plymouth's and Dodge's .
The old lady who sold Barney the lemon was Grandmother Walton😊
Poor Barney! I'd gladly give him his money back for that super-mint Raven Black Customline with four gorgeous wide whites!
She also had a warehouse full of 1953 Ford Victorias!
The 62 sport roadster TBird is sweet. I always wanted one of them.
Always liked 62 Galaxies so I bought one in 1971. Two door black on black with a 390 and I put dual Thrush mufflers on it.
Nice. 👍
Love it man!! 🤘🏼
My dad had a 1962 Ford Galaxy 500 sedan in Ming green with a white top.
Grandma Walton!
That's what I thought!
And her partner in crime, Sam the Butcher!
@ quad5186-- Actor Allan Melvin was in a total of eight different episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show," playing different characters. He was also Sergeant Hacker on "Gomer Pyle."
Yep! Ellen Corby
She played a side kick in so many shows and even when she was young.
Love the voices.
They must use some form of artificial intelligence in order to copy the voices. A little scary maybe.
Can't imagine how you could leave out all the early color shots of the first Mustangs... and the many Mercurys and Comets are priceless!
Whatever happened to Whip Antennas?!
The funniest episode seems to be when Barney got the ancient Harley with sidecar! Love that Big Bush Camo!! 😂
That was some inspired comedy!
My favourite, the '63 Galaxie patrol car , the '60 Galaxie is cool as well.
Shame about the product placement, though, they should've kept the '60 through the whole series.
The 1960 was a Fairlane, not a Galaxie.
@@nlpnt Then it would have looked dopey, a '60 Fairlane cop car in 1968!
How could I miss all these episodes?
Just watching Classic Cars of Mayberry, one is reminded how many future TV stars got some of their first work on The Andy Griffith Show.
Very enjoyable video down memory lane, thumbs up, great video
How 'bout classic cars of Perry Mason? 3:50 who knew Barney had such good taste?
love the 4 seater T-Birds from 1958-1966 The bullet featured in the Peggy episode where her father gave it to her for her birthday was not my favorite, but I have to give Ford credit for the wild style. I see the bullet T-Bird was featured in at least two other episodes Thanks Fusion Kidd
The doctor became a chaplain on mash!
This same doctor was on a number of episodes on the Gomer Pyle Show.
Maybe after the Korean War was over, the Chaplain went back to school and became a Doctor.
That’s where I saw him! That’s funny thank you!
@@gsmith207 you're welcome!
@@franknew9001 William Christopher played Father Francis Mullkahey on MASH.
Automotive “extras” not mentioned, but in the episode involving the 1925 Harley, there was parked a 1963 Mercury Meteor Station Wagon. The mid-sized Meteor was only produced in 1962 and 1963. The wagon was one-year only - 1963. Less than 9,000 were built.
Of course.....those weren't classic cars back when this was filmed.
@@jstravelers4094 I don’t think anyone said they were. Certainly not me.
Great comment. I like wagons.
@@bernardkroeger4045me to I used to love riding in the back of a station wagon almost as much as on back of a truck especially if the back window rolled down kids today will never have the great memories we have from a time long gone 😞😭😞🥹🥹🥹
@@88SC Why so defensive?
Kind of cool that you got voices that sound a lot like Andy, Barney and Aunt Bee!
and that you haven't gotten a 'cease and decist' letter from CBS.
I love all the old cars. My Dad drove a 1947 Chrysler 4 door sedan until around 1968 when he bought a Dodge Station Wagon. Don't remember which model.
Did we omit Bob Fleet's special large Cadillac, and the Mayberry bus used to take the band to the competition?
I’m making a part 2. Didn’t want to make this video too long.
My two favorites are the short bus that the Mayberry Band goes to the state finals and the motorcycle with a side car. I live in a very rural small town and I can see the old men that used to hangout at the post office/gas station doing the exact same thing that they did on the show.
Mostly Fords. Another reason why it was the best tv show ever 😊
🏆Awesome 🏆 love 🍀 Andy Griffin 👀✌️
😅Andy Griffith and the gang are cool I meant I love Mayberry what a cool 🍀little town 👀✌️
Mayberry was a strange town, No teenagers, no GMs and no chryslers.
FORD country!
It was a great town, mostly Fords....
Aunt Bees car she had on the show was still parked outside her house when she passed away. It had four flat tires and the inside smelled like cat pee because she left the windows down for her cats. Aunt Bee had death knocking at her door she had a bad heart and cancer as well. She was one good actor God Rest her soul.
1960 Rambler owned by a guy named Gilly, speed speed speed thats all he thinks about.
Earley Gilley, a Mechanic/auto machinist lived in Pilot Mountain N.C.-and was married to Andy Griffith's cousin Juanita.
VERY NICELY DONE! THANK YOU!!!
Love this channel I subscribed ❤
I've had 19 Galaxies because of this show and my Grandma's having them....
A documentary about the car's, that were in Mayberry, is one thing. Voicing the separate actor's characters, is ANOTHER THING😁👍!!! This was a top-notch, production. A '1965 Excalibur, series 1'?? Kinda looks more like a 1935, era model style, no🤔??? Are you sure about the date?? I'm glad that you put in the write-up, that Andy, was a widower. 'Cause 'cept for the very first episode, that fact isn't mentioned, whatsoever, throughout the series😉.
always a Ford sideswiping everything just like modern ‘stangs! haaa!
This was awesome thank you brought back so many memories of my childhood watching this with my dad
Love these videos‼️❤
A decoy,shazzam!
Please do all the cars of The Flintstones. Enjoyed this.
My friend bought a 61 T bird.
We were able to get a new (old stock) power steering hose assembly for it at a NAPA.
That box had been on the shelf a long time.
aftermarket- edelmann made a lot of hoses for green sales, inc. they had good coverage for most older fords.
Way back in the last century , MANY of these TV shows were openly supplied by the Big 3 ...
Mayberry and the Twilght Zone were supplied by Ford, and you'd see it the closing credits
5:05 Aunt Bee went on to get her pilot's license as well.
A few rare GM background cars in the show in a few episodes... an early 1950's Pontiac (parked) and a 1959 Chevy 2 door post.
An occasional '55 Plymouth and '57 Chrysler also appeared.
the '59 convertibles are worth roughly twice as much as the sedans. i only see sedans and hardtops at our thursday car shows in el cajon.
I like the thunder bird , and the squad cars . I didn't know that a Jaguar was in a show.
i never saw that either
I remember that one where Barney bought that car. Wasn’t there sawdust in the transmission too ?
maybe it was in the script but nobody ripped one apart- prop guys avoided any real mechanical work.
With all that crime in Mayberry law enforcement needed the lastest cars.
before the interstates were built- many small towns had big-power interceptors because they were on main roads going north and south and pursuits were common. the carolinas and georgia had hundreds of such towns.
Only Barney would buy an Edsel.
They also had an episode where Barney had a 1949 Hudson Terraplane, a model Hudson discontinued before WWII.
@@lancasterritzyescargotdine2602 that was Dillingers favorite car.
A 1961 Edsel, no less.
The blue Edsel that Barney was driving in the episode that was in color was a 1958 model. Edsels sold so poorly that they were only made for 1958, 1959, and 1960.
@@franknew9001 That Edsel is actually Turquoise. It belonged to a couple in Corona, Calif. and had lic # PPP556.
I'ed buy a '58 Edsel.I liked Edsel when Edsel wasn't cool!
Barney's Motorcycle is actually a 1927 model. It is still around.
I like the 62 Lincoln. I also like the 58-60 Lincoln ,not shown, from the episode when the motion picture people came to town
The "'62" Lincoln is actually a '63.
that was way cool. lol it really was. i grew up watching the show
Wonderful memories of the good life.
Nice production with voices. Few episodes you can see an oval (pre 1958) window VW Bug. FORD Ruled this Show. Damn......never seen this Ferrari episode.
Never saw it either!
Ford supplied the autos for the show, it's in the credits. Surprised to see the Cadillac, though.
somebody had a brain fart.
@3:00...when Barney stops a truck on the cycle it looks suspiciously like an L.A. freeway, not a NC state road.
Ellen Corby was only in her forties in that episode.
This was before she and her family moved to Waltons Mountain.
51
Hubcaps Lesh.
As Gomer Pyle might say, "shame shame shame" to Grandma Walton @0:53 who is trying to unload a 1954 Ford to Barney Fife, which is a clunker.
Ellen Corby played a crook on two episodes of Gomer Pyle USMC.
You will note the fishing Rock Star is the same Rock Star that was in the 1963 film Bye Bye Birdie, (Conrad Birdie).
Superb! Thumbs way up! 😊
Great video. Also liked the car Bobby fleets band drove not sure what it was
I believe it was a 47 Cadillac Fleetwood limo
One of my favorites too. It was called an Airport Limo, and there were several old stretched models used for this purpose - only the driver's door opens on the 'road side'.. I assume so passengers won't get sideswiped by a passing car. Found this on inet.. looks to be the same car [can't post a link, but can search "𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹: 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟳 𝗖𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗼 | 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀"]
New doctor was William Christopher. (Father Mulcahy)
I suspect on watching Andy Griffith that the same TBird was used often. Even Floyd the barber drove one
well paramount made a lot of shows and movies and their motor pool swapped them around.
There was always a '61 Comet parked on the street. FoMoCo must have provided the bulk of the cars. My fave was Otis' '33 Ford roadster. Big bucks today. I think Floyd's car was in an episode, but I cant remember what the vehicle was?
And sometimes the Comet could be seen in the background driving by, always enjoyed spotting the Comet.
I look at cars in old on t.v. my favorite is C.H.I.P s
@@clevelandlamar407 CHIPs is great for car spotting! Lots of big '70's gas guzzlers, muscle cars and vintage classics parked on the streets.
I like the 1962 Lincoln episode when Gomer asks the man for permission for Goober to change the spark plugs at $1.15 each and the car is an 8 cylinder!
and then apologetically told the man that he had Goober take his picture standing by the car. lol
$10 tuneup but yeah ha.
that was high- priced for the times
neatest car is the the 1938 ford truck owned by the darlings
Did the original actors do the background narration?
1962 Ford T Bird Sports Roaster could have a 390 with 3 - 2 barrel carbs @ 340 horsepower….. who wouldn’t want one ? Thanks Fusion Kidd 😊
Those 61-3 Rocket Birds are the most gorgeous ones , especially with that tonneau cover in place. And watching the top raise and lower , so cool !
Don knotts also frove a 58 Edsel in the 1966 film The ghost and mr. chicken
I agree with tagnut. Funniest ever. 😊😊
That old lady was Grandma Walton!
Galaxy baby.
'galaxie'
The car was only driven up and down Walton’s mountain😂
I always wondered how they made the paint patina so dull on relatively new model police cars.
i'm guessing good, old 3M wetordry paper- its been around a long time.
The narrator sounds like Barney Fyffe.
"Aunt Bee and Opie encounter a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB". Apparently I missed that episode! 😂
never seen that one either
I used to live in Menahga Minnesota and my next door neighbor bought her son a pink 1962 Mercury Monterey.
did it have the electric rear window? cool.
3:55 “Three’s Company” (Mr. Ferly) meets “The Andy Griffith Show”, they’re ripping off “Scooby Doo”.
4:37 “You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry”
8:20 no DUI for Otis ?
Where is Danny Thomas speeding car that started the whole show?
The Go Go dancers and electric guitars were a bit much for Aunt Bee! ;)
I would love to know what color those cars were they were all shot in black and white Guess we'll never know
Jim with the Mercedes’ 190-Roscoe P Coltrane!
6:25 so far out of all of them I want the international
Checkpoint Chickie!
When I was a kid I imagined the Galaxie cop cars had a NASCAR 427 engine! (maybe they did!)
These were not Galaxie police cars. They were the appropriate Fairlane and Custom Fords, 1960-1968. Because they were fleet cars, they most likely would have had 223 cu. in. six cylinder engines.
those cars prolly had 260's in em.
@@tommurphy4307 Tom Doophys Murphy "prolly" never finished 2nd grade. Must be a Trump Lover.
I own 1954 Ford custom line not in good shape but it's still on it
I think Andy Griffith was a Ford fan. He drove Fords in " Matlock" too.
James Lindsey, played by James Best from the dukes of Hazzard
Mayor Stoner, Briscoe Darling
A Ford custom Line I would like to it from The little old with all fauts bargain
Tatum Oneils mother in the 62 TBird. Bill Bixby in the 61 Bird & I like the 62 Lincoln. And those squad cars had terrible paint on them,I guess the didn't want them too shiny out in the sticks.
Tatum's mother was Joanna Moore. She was beautiful.
@@franknew9001 Yeah, but she went crazy.
The studio sprayed a "flattening" agent on the paint to stop glare on the camera.
Opie's real dad Rance Howard, was in the armored truck episode.
@@lrich8181 Rance Howard also appeared in three other episodes of the Andy Griffith Show, although they might have been uncredited. In one episode he was a bus driver, another he was the governor’s limousine driver, and the other episode he was a party guest.

Rance was a great character actor who appeared in a total of 285 different movies and tv shows.
barney bought a car from grandma walton. 1960 thunderbird looks nice.
Ford seem to get on quite a few shows even outside the squad car
Great impersonations!
