I still can't believe that more than 40 years later I am still getting comments about my gown. First of all, back then we didn't get to pick our gowns (at least not in Texas) and there is a story behind this particular dress I can't really share publicly. The state director wanted everyone to notice Miss Texas so we typically had an ugly gown. I do think mine wins for most ugly though...I did get noticed...just sayin! :) Sandi Miller (Miss Texas 1978)
Well liked, she was a surprise winner as I recall because she had not been a winner in any preliminary rounds. It was unusual for someone to win the Miss America title without being a preliminary swimsuit or talent winner earlier in the week.
She stated in an interview as I recall that in the excitement of the moment, she got confused and thought they meant the city where she was crowned Miss Virginia.

@@sandragrayzeller8671 I'm happy for you that you stood out. I better understand the reasoning behind you wearing the gown now. It definitely stood out. I wish you had been able to wear a gown of your own choosing instead of that pink thing. Winning Miss Texas is a great honor, considering the level of competition there. I hope life has been kind to you, ma'am.
My Bad ! Yes, I totally forgot Deborah Lipford from Delaware And before that two Black girls who were in the pageant but never made finals ( Cheryl Adrienne Browne of Iowa and Kelly"Pat" Patterson of Indiana)

These classic Miss America Pageants were the best and classiest pageants ever. I sure miss how great they were.
I love the Miss America beauty pageants! Watching the old ones is awesome!!!
Miss America 1979 Kylene Barker is a super gorgeous, beautiful lady!!
One of the prettiest ever crowned.
I was named after her : )
Kylene Stierly , me too :)
@maseratic boychik I agree! Kylene was lovely, but Teresa was the total package. What a voice!

@maseratic boychik This explains all the horrible hoopskirts in 76.
I thought her evening gown looked like a owl but she was very beautiful
STEVEN WILSON you made me laugh so hard... that is exactly what it looked like but you couldn’t stop looking at it lol
You rock, Sandi!
still the most beautiful Miss Texas to ever grace the stage of Miss America!!!
That was a lovely top 5
I was named after this Beauty
I named my daughter Kylene too
after her.
Me too!
Same!
She's actually from Galax not Roanoke about a hour away
Still a beauty to this day
I love that “Miss America 1979” blinked. 😍
Edit: I mean the words “Miss America 1979” flashed on and off on the screen.
winner this year should have been Miss Kentucky ...marcia bell
Erni X I thought so that night, too, but then when I saw the video again years later, I realized that her vocal wasn’t as strong as I remembered.
The days when no one was offended and the pageant was classy.

Stunningly beautiful but I did not think she should have won. I think Miss Ohio should have taken the crown.
I never understood why she said Roanoke?
Closest big city? Just a guess. I have no idea, and wondered that, too.
She stated in an interview as I recall that in the excitement of the moment, she got confused and thought they meant the city where she was crowned Miss Virginia.
Who was the 6'11" girl who towered over everyone? She really didn't have a prayer.
dude
The 4th runner-up took the back road.
Pink gown worn by Miss Texas...do you RUclipsrs approve?
I don't like it at all. I think it is a terrible looking gown, unfortunately.

@@sandragrayzeller8671 lol u were beautiful though Miss Texas 1978
It was 1978 and the usual Top 10 were "lily white". Two years later, two Blacks made the Top 10 and one made Top 5
And in 1977 there was one black in the Top 10 ;)

I noted this already. Try and READ ! my previous comment.
"lily white" is quite a racist comment. You have to EARN it. There's no quota!
