    I have the same enginge in my Scala. You're enginge is fine. Your "issue" is caused by the DSG. When you floor it, the gearbox needs to go through some gears which takes about 1s when you go from 7 to 4. You might want to get some info on how a DSG or DKG gearbox works. The solution to smooth driving is simple: You got 150 hp in a small car -> you don't need to floor it. You got plenty of power. It's possible to easily overtake without flooring it. If you really do want to race than simply select the gear with the paddles, it will go into manual mode, so you can floor it and have imediate power. With a DSG you kinda shift with the gaspedal. The more aggressive you push it down, the more gears it needs to downshift. Since a DSG cant skip a gear it will take longer, the more harder you push.

    I bought a new 1.5DSG Scala two months ago, my third new Skoda (Citago, Octavia 2.0 diesel) and consider it the best car I have ever bought. Comfortable, quiet, economical and stylish. Skoda have done it again, do not be deterred by this road test, it is a fantastic car

  • @twistsouth514

    The power delay is the DSG, the juddering is the engine. But it’s not the cylinder deactivation causing it. It’s something else because not all 1.5TSI are affected. It seems to me like the engine just isn’t being given enough fuel or there’s too much reliance on the variable geometry turbo at low RPM.
    I’ve got one and the last software update seems to have solved it but I’m not yet convinced so I’m doing more testing now that it’s colder weather.

    • @MovieViking
      @MovieViking 4 года назад +2

      I've waited 16 months for the update to be released to my VW Golf 1.5 TSI EVO ACT DSG7 and it still sucks.
      I has only reduced the juddering, not eliminated it and i still feels as if one cylinder keeps failing. What a disgrace.
      I will never again buy or lease a VW Group car with that engine and is waiting for a diesel version of the Octavia to be released in Denmark or for a better price on the Kamiq diesel or 1.0 DSG7 (which is at the moment ridiculously priced 20% more expensive than the Octavia 1.5 TSI when leasing)

    • @MovieViking
      @MovieViking 4 года назад

      Oh forgot: The power delay is due to the new and mediocre version of the DSG and TSI engine and software. It is no present in the non ACT version with 1.4 TSI and the old DSG. The fooled me into leasing the 1.5 TSI by forgetting to tell me that the version I tested was a 1.4 TSI Golf VII.

    • @twistsouth514
      @twistsouth514 4 года назад

      MovieViking yeah I rejected mine shortly after I posted the original comment above. Took a gamble and ordered another one which luckily isn’t affected. They did make some adjustments to the cylinder heads for MY20 but I can still feel the issue under the hood ever so slightly when accelerating briskly in 2nd gear (DSG). If this replacement car had been 100% perfect I’d be happy but it isn’t quite so it’s obvious VAG are still trying to cover this up. I love my T-Roc but I’m with you: this will be my last VAG car. They are just not capable of producing quality cars anymore. Audi prices are a joke given the poor quality. Even BMW and Merc are slipping though and the mid-tier brands are really starting to shine. Kia, for example.

    • @twistsouth514
      @twistsouth514 4 года назад

      MovieViking the DSG hasn’t changed between the 1.4 and 1.5, it’s still the old DQ200.

    Finally someone highlights the delay issue in a review. I had the same engine gearbox set up in my 2021 Kamiq and for a while it drove me nuts. Best way I found to deal with it was place it in sport mode then back to normal after the pull away. But yes only issue I had with it. Super car. I use android also and had none of the tech issues you experienced. Great review as always Bob.

    Bob, thanks for the detailed information on the flaws. I have heard about 1.5 / DSG VW group issues before, your video does a great job of explaining the flaws to potential customers. I'm considering a Kamiq with the 1.5 and maybe the DSG (not yet convinced about auto gear boxes) I'm now armed with suitable knowledge in advance of a test drive. Best wishes and thanks for all your informative videos. Ps hope you do one on the new BMW 1.5 petrol 1 series.

The driving i did was through the country side with little slow or built areas though. You will need to prove it for yourself. Very nice powerful and economical engine - good luck.

    Great that this review covers the issues with the 1.5 unlike 99% of them. I am one of the hundreds of Briskoda forum posters who has a VAG 1.5 EVO engine and have had issues. The two main problems are the delayed response and the juddering / kangarooing. My Karoq manual new from April had a software update for the power delay back in June. Fixed that. Had the judder update a couple weeks ago - seems better but not completely fixed. VW TPI recall notice says that the power delay is something to do with ECU and alternator improper interaction.

    Great reviews, Bob. Can't believe so many reviewers completely ignore what by now is a well-known issue. Like you I am a big Skoda fan, but this 1.5 EVO engine seems to be a nightmare. Threads I have followed in both on UK and Czech websites suggest it is not simply a DSG issue. There were recent reports in a respected Czech publication that there is a cure for one of four batches of the engine. However, It seems a very tough nut to crack, and I am not sure software updates alone will cure it. I wouldn't touch one of these engines with a barge pole.

    I found Bluetooth caused the issue for Apply car play, and depending on when the video was recorded car play is updated with iOS 13 and we’re on 13.1.2. So switch off Bluetooth. Might not work for you but worth trying if it happens again on another car.

    I have a SEAT Leon with the same 1.5tsi DSG 7 speed auto transmission (150). I have NO problem with hesitation or delay. The point here is that the transmission has 3 modes Eco, normal Drive and Sport of which there is no mention of in the review. If you want a quick throttle response select Sport mode, perhaps this is why other reviewers like myself have not identified this delay as a major problem.

    Had a 1.0 TSI Scala Style as a demo for a week or so and found it a very good car
    It had a very odd equipment list
    It had really high tech stuff like LED headlights but no front parking sensors
    I also encountered issues with the Bluetooth and infotainment system very very glitchy
    Plastics inside where okay but if you look closely you can see it was built to a price

    Finally, someone complaining about this engine publicly (BIG THANKS). I own a leon 1.5 tsi manual, and I had that lag of power you mention in the video. Some may say this is how engines fed with a turbo work, however, this engine behaviour is unpredictable, very dangerous in junctions and roundabouts. There's a "direct acceleration" tweak that sort of breakfixes it diminishing the lag to more acceptable levels, you need to have obdeleven or similar tools for that. One more thing, could you test the same engine (110kw -150 horses) with manual transmission? There's a very well known issue that causes the engine to sort of 'bounce' if you stay on 1st gear e.g. when youre in a traffic jam. It is unbearable and impossible to drive without looking like a rookie. This effect is so well known in the 1.5 tsi owners forums that people call it "Kangaroo effect". It would be great to have someone call this out publicly, cause VW denies any issues with the engine. Lots of customers affected without any reply from their dealers, besides "we don't know anything bad about the engine, you're driving it wrong".

    The delay was a distraction at first, but *all* the VWs have it. Easy to get used to, and avoidable: if you want to overtake you can either coax the DSG into downshifting *before* you overtake by blipping the throttle, use the pedals, or put it in S. At a T-junction well the truth is i'll step on the gas right as there's still a car passing by, since i know it'll take half a second before i actually start moving.
    If you can't bear all that you can just buy the manual.
    The shuddering seems to be a common issue, but not affecting all of the 1.5 engines.

Even better can be in Dublin where lines just disappear without any warning: 3 lines -one line - two lines one line -only turn right... Other reviewers only talk about how good you can fit in the front and back seats, and how much garbage you can carry, but here I got to really feel what is like to drive this on a 1.5 TSI engine. And I'm also disappointed too, because I thought the car looked good, and it has all the bells and whistles that make Skoda cars great imo. Subscribed!

Maybe because currently I drive a 2017/18 passat 1.4 dsg 125hp and this is also a crappy engine with lag? Before this car I drove a 1.6 TDI manual golf and that one had a really noticable lag. If I put the passat in sport mode then it seems to have a little less lag. Anyways, maybe I got used to this problem?

      Adrian Nelson Exactly. But in UK and Ireland, having registered in peoples mind the idea you are getting an honest VAG, they then cut quality via less quality across the board AND increase the price. SKODA is a VAG scam. They could have moved al German VW production to Czech Rep. but choose this option of a false VW named SKODA. Irish people love it, think they are getting better value. People buy perceived value. That's exactly what I have learnt to do with my almost completely vile Seat Arona 115PS DSG, where pulling away from junctions is otherwise even more heart-stopping than Bob describes here. I think the problem is inherent to DSG transmissions and particularly the sh!te VW DQ200 7 speed 'box which seems to be more concerned with preserving its little dry clutches above all else - just try a quick 3-point turn manoeuvre to see how slowly and gently the clutches engage. I spend almost as much time moving the gear lever in the Arona as if it had the manual box. My advice is to never, ever buy a smallish VW group car with a DSG gearbox. Maybe all DSG 'boxes are sh!te.

No problems, at all, the later ones have a better shift lever (D/S is just a flip back against a return spring) & updated software, tweaked to suit the R engine but they're all fun to drive. We've also owned 2 earlier DSG DQ 250's, in a 2010 EOS & a 2011 Octy vRS, again no problems + they coped very well with the stage 1 remaps too. I've driven cars with the new 7-speed DQ 380, not noticed any problems, but they were all 2.0 litre engines. David Clark Like the Skoda Scala that Bob has been testing here, my Arona has the dry clutch 7-speed DQ200 which is apparently the most troublesome, according to honestjohn.co.uk , as well as being somewhat flawed on the road with a rather hesitant nature. Apparently the higher torque capacity ‘wet clutch’ DSG boxes which presumably include some of yours, are much better but I will not ever buy another DSG equipped car if there is a conventional automatic (torque converter) alternative.

    I know this is an old video to comment on but I wonder why this car is troublesome when it's the same engine / DSG combo in the other cars you mentioned as being favourable. It sounds like it's more of a tuning thing to get the economy numbers down. I had the same issue with a Hyundai i30 1.6 turbo. No power when you accelerate, then a massive shove to push you back in the seat - a bit stressful diving into a roundabout and you can't predict what your car is going to do. The more I read about new cars, the more I want to stick with my naturally aspirated 2000 Mitsubishi.

    My partner’s Seat Ibiza with a 1.0 tsi and dsg also suffers from hesitation when pulling away. If stop/start is active it’s even worse. It also changes up through the gears so early it’s in 6th by the time you’re doing 30mph. Then if you need to accelerate you have to lock down and there’s another delay before it drops down a couple of gears. I wonder if any of this is to do with how the engines and gearboxes are set up to minimise emissions?

    • @georgem2456

    i drive a 2 year old Golf with the 1.5 150 HP engine and DSG. Usually run it in eco mode at 1500 revs on the way to work every day. I never noticed anything... must be a Skoda thing? BTW the lane assist in the Golf is flawless if you compare it to the the system in a current Daimler E-Class... That one positively brakes your car down when it has some lane recognition hiccups and you can't do anything but turn the system completely off. Compared to the e-class, I don't mind some odd steering impulse now and then, because i can still keep it in lane when that happens (usually around roadworks with added provisional markings on the surface). A colleague has exactly the same Golf. No complaints either.

    Dude, you are toooooooo weird yourself.
    Flooring the gas pedal and expecting a modern age car to immediately respond is utopic.
    We live on an age that economy and emmisions matter.
    If you think that that gap is there unintenionally you shouldn't be doing this job. It's simple as that.
    You can't remember the first cars that were non turbo and had electronically controlled manifolds? Let me remind you. The "gap" was soooo big that there were actually hack chips produced to eliminate it for enthusiastic drivers!
    Try to remember the 1.8 Turbo 20V engine. You could say that it had a gap...up to 3-3500 rpm!!! Especially on 225 tuning on more performance oriented cars.
    AND you should have the sport program selected.
    All the 1.5 TSi engines used to have even MORE torque available and they were frogleaping like crazy when the ecu tried to regulate between torque and ease of driving around town/low consumption.
    The gap is there is very welcome. I am really sorry just that the idiots want to only mate it to the DSG regarding the scala.
    Operate it with a manual box and it is a joy to drive really. I can't believe that motors like this one have almost 20+ kgr of torque available from almost...immediately.
    If you want smoother/slower put it on eco.
    If you want more immediate response choose sport. It's there where it gives 150 hp.
    You knag too much.
    And your accent makes me want to shoot the screen. With a real gun. SSSHHHHHKOOOuoda and I had to check with boagey meant for the infotainment!
