      Verne did an interview during Masters week that the original tech direction called for a wide shot of the shot. Cameraman went with his gut, zoomed in, and the rest is history.

      @@andysorensen1737 The director had also called for a switch to the shot of Tiger sooner but the technical director went against that order and stayed with the ball. The way the entire moment was seen would be completely different.

    As exciting as Auburn's own radio call of the Kick Six was, I've always liked Verne's call because of its simplicity. "Touchdown, Auburn; an answered prayer!" is about as perfect a description as I can imagine.

    Hard to find a more versatile voice than Verne. College football, NFL, college basketball and golf. His voice and his passion in some of the biggest moments add to the greatness of the event. He knew what all great announcers should know, when to speak and when to say nothing. After the Laettner buzzer beater, he screams Yes! and lets the moment play out for over a minute. Too many get tempted to keep talking, but silence is golden after such an epic moment.

      So many people act like that is unique. Everyone who hits it back there plays it like that. A few years before, Davies Love III made that very same shot. YER SIR with Jack and the exact timing of Jacke raising his arms... unbelievable timing.

      @@jonlanier_ Davis was a bit further up than where Tiger was. Also, Tiger’s ball was right up against the edge of the thick rough which made the chip even more difficult. The fact he made it is legendary. No other golfer could’ve made that shot. No one!

    Verne has been there and on the call for some of the greatest moments in sports history. He is much, MUCH more than amazing and legendary. The man is simply phenomenal and I hope he enjoys retirement. 🤘

    I lived in Dallas for several years back when Verne was on a local TV station there. Always enjoyed his commentary then and for the many years since. Thanks for the memories, Verne.

      I had the pleasure of meeting him on a flight from Dallas to Chicago in 1977 I was 13 at the time. Definitely one of the best at his craft.

    Verne got his chops being the play by play radio guy for the Dallas Cowboys back in the late 70's and early 80's. Yeah I know Brad Sham did some play by play, but Verne was the main guy before he went to CBS

    The thing with Verne is that I think he can call literally ANYTHING and make it epic. Some guys are better at one sport than others but Verne is so incredibly versatile at the sports he can play-by-play.

    The fact that the A&M upset, Hail Mary tip vs. Georgia AND the Bama kick-6 happened in the same year for Auburn still leaves me flabbergasted, especially since they ended up losing the championship game in the final few seconds. If there was ever a more charmed team that failed to win a title, I don’t know of it.

    Only miss and its low and cuz Olympics likely lost footage were Midori Ito crashing into the boards handing the gold to Kristi Yamaguchi and his frustration finally coming out at the Tonya Harding Debacle

    just imagining what would’ve been had he called the pros like NFL, NBA or MLB. he could’ve been great calling games for guys like either MLB: rangers, astros, braves, rays or Marlons, for NFL: cowboys, texans, saints, falcons, jaguars, NBA: mavericks, rockets, hawks, heat, or the magic. that’s on his turf, but to see him call other games on the other side would have been crazy.

    Verne always did it like the pro that he was. When he first started, there were a lot of very good play-by-play guys. As he bows out, he stands as one of the greatest ever.

      @@fuckcensorship69 He stayed with football play-by-play for about 3 years too long. He was hard to listen to, in those last 3 years. Gary Danielson has even talked about Verne not being sharp in those years. Before that, for over 50 years, he was fantastic.

    I just want to commend the awareness on no.11 at 8:24 to not touch the ball after the buzzer. It's instinct to help it in the basket but it would have been a dead ball, game over if he had done so
