Did you vacuum, sweep, or beat rug before start cleaning process? Us carpet junkies are not a fan of short cuts of the process. You need to show it if you did it.

This isn’t how you clean it.
First you take it upside down and vacuuming from the site that is up,because handmade rugs have knots. After that all dust will be beneath the rug. Then you swip it. Only after that you can wash it,otherwise you just mixing dirt into the rug.
