I'm a retired police officer. You can imagine how many dealings I had with drunk drivers. When I was younger I thought they were simply evil people who didn't care except for their vice. It took me a while to realize they all needed help. Most were good people dealing with a disease. Whether to nurse anxiety, depression, failed marriage, joblessness, illness or loneliness, jail wasn't the answer. Society spends money on jail, clothing, meds and food. But not a dime on mandatory rehab or therapy. I feel for this family's loss. I don't have the answer for punishment in this case. He didn't intend to kill anyone. Yet the disease that controls him impacted his decision to drive. I feel for everyone. I thought I was doing right. But maybe I was part of the problem.
Thank you for this comment, sir. It is easy to judge others and to say "lock them up and throw away the key!" Addiction is a complex disease which tells it's sufferers that they don't have it. We need better approaches.

My brother's friend from high school crashed and killed his buddy while driving drunk, showed no remorse, and received a much lighter sentence. I think he's out already. Meanwhile the people that were minding their business are the ones to die or have their lives completely ruined. Rest in peace to the man that died and the twins they'll never get to meet...
There’s a reason for that. People in a relaxed state suffer less injuries statistically drunk or asleep. People who are aware of what’s about to happen tense up and break bones very easily.
I actually struggled to find any stats online for the difference in survival between drunk drivers and other involved victims. One article said drunk patients had a 65% greater chance of survival. Couldn’t read the full findings though unless I go find an issue of a journal. From the brief explanation of the study, it doesn’t seem like it paints a full picture. Many drunk drivers may skew those numbers if no other sober person is involved. My brother died driving drunk. The guy he hit had very minor injury to his leg and my brother wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Probability was not on his side, but I appreciate no one else was really harmed or killed because of him. On a brighter note, I found statistics saying that drunk driving accidents are way down from the 80s. Guess a lot more people drank and drove back then.

For someone that remorseful, 41 years is just too much. There are people that get far less for taking more lives and showing little to no remorse. Many are sentenced to 20 years or less. Obviously he should serve time but 20 seems a lot more appropriate for a person like this. The justice system is so inconsistent and will never be an adequate deterrent unless it’s made much more consistent. @@simulki7108it depends on the state so I’m not positive, but most crimes that aren’t murder require 80% of time to be served in most states. That’s if they remain with good behavior. I don’t have a problem with the sentencing, but it is worth mentioning he wouldn’t get as much time if he was a woman. There was the case in which the woman got 14 years after killing 2 people. America has the most misandrist criminal justice system and it’s sickening to see the double standards day after day play out.
Sentencing is also determined based on prior arrests etc and also the state. Every state is different in the sentencing laws a judge must abide by. America has a federal government and we have SOME “laws” that are equal across every state but each state is essentially separate and can operate outside of federal rule. If that makes any sense. It was a big deal to our forefathers not to have too much control from the feds. Many states tend to try to stay along the same lines with law and how they are enforced but not every state is the same. Some are more harsh on punishment than others. Hope that helps it make sense. It’s not “because she’s female” or “because someone is black” in some of these instances there’s a lot more going on. Some states would be less harsh than others on a variety of things…but I can certainly how one can come to your conclusion if you aren’t aware of how all this works. Looking at 2 cases from 2 states side by side and then the guideline’s a judge is meant to work within…..it’s never apples to apples.
An intoxicated man in my state backed over his wife at the airport during an argument, killing her, with their kid sitting in the back seat. He got 1-20 years. He will undoubtedly be out on parole soon. Do you know what's actually sickening to see play out day after day? All of the violent men being released early on parole, and promptly re-offending. You see them on the news every single day, robbing, raping and murdering.
Wow, 41 years in jail for one bad decision that led to tragic and unintended consequences. Meanwhile you've got career criminals stealing/assaulting/etc on a regular basis that use jail like a weekend hotel. People do less time for pre-meditated murder. Condolences to the family of the victims but this man shouldn't be essentially terminated because of what he did here. It's bad enough he has to live with what he's done, let alone spend the rest of his life in prison. This isn't justice.

Remorseful or not, his poor and irresponsible decision to get drunk and then drive resulted in him causing a fatal accident that took three innocent lives. 30 years would have been sufficient enough. 41 years , dang . Here in Canada if you're drinking and driving and you kill somebody. It's the easiest way to get away with murder. I remember a lady that killed six adults and one unborn baby on canada day in Saskatchewan. She was given ten years total time, And maybe served half of that before she was released. And I'm not even sure if they sent her to jail. I think she was a native lady so they center to a healing lodge...... literally disgusting

Let this serve as a lesson. Never ever let your ego and irresponsibility allow you to put yourself in this sort of situation. Take an uber, sleep it off in the car, whatever, save yourself and others
Currently, you can get a DUI for sleeping in your car. Parked. Stretched out in the back seat. As long as the car is on or the keys are anywhere other than the trunk. For half of the year, it's either too hot or too cold to sleep in your car without the heat or AC on. Drunk driving would be cut in half within a week if the law was changed.
@@artyomarty391 like I said, since you can get a DUI for sleeping in your parked car, there's no point in doing that. You're less likely to get pulled over driving for 10 minutes than sleeping for 8 hours
@23raid Three beers is a LOT to have before driving. One alcoholic drink for a woman, or two for a man (well most men), is the safe limit before driving.
This is so sad for everyone involved and I feel so awful for the driver too, that level of guilt is unbearable to live with and the poor thing will suffer for the rest of his life. I feel compassion for him because you can tell he is not an evil person and has a kind heart. Just awful all around.
This had me crying for all involved. Mainly because I have family members who struggle with alcoholism and I fear every day that they might have this happen to them and they might take someone else’s life or their own. And of course the victim in this situation, she wants so badly to hate him but I think because she can feel his remorse, she simply cannot. It shows her character. He took so much from her but she will not go forward in life holding on to hatred. I hope that this man is able to find peace while servicing his time. He’ll be in his 70’s when he gets out, of course if he makes it to that age, but he’ll hopefully learn a lot about himself. Rest in peace to the brother and unborn twins and the life they never got to live.
My father drove drunk for yeeears and this is something I always feared. They finaly took away his licence and I'm soooo glad they did. I have absolutely no empathy for anyone driving drunk.
I worked for a lawyer who drank and drove home couple days a week. Sometimes drank in the office, sometimes at a local bar. He'd get pretty plastered. But even by age 70 he had never had an accident or a DUI The truth is, and many people have a hard time accepting it, is most drunk drivers are actually decent drivers... Most alcoholics would drive drunk hundreds of times before a DUI. Some drive thousands. Getting into an accident due to alcohol is actually fairly rare considering how many people are driving drunk right now, and usually happens to younger people who are not yet experienced with alcohol The more realistic fear is not for a drunk driver to get into an accident, its to get a DUI. A new inexperienced driver, for example, is more at risk of getting into an accident than some alcoholic who drinks and drivers weekly

This is sad, this could be me 100 percent. Condolences to everyone involved in this case. He truly have remorse, n the family is crushed. Prayers up to you all .
It's awful to see him remorseful but this is what they need to show people to set an example as to how serious it is to drink behind the wheel. I'm sorry, I myself could not forgive if one of my family members were gone from someone's "addiction". It needs to be a reminder for everyone. This is so unsafe.
I know he was remorseful and genuine about it, I feel so bad and sad for everyone involved. They aren’t bad people just made a stupid decision and it was a risk he took and it ended innocents lives and hurt people forever. It’s sad how the system is though. There are actual evil people who hurt and kill other’s purposely but her a lesser sentence or release is what I’m confused by.
I watched a case of a man who killed 4 teens due to drinking and driving. He served a short sentence, when released, he went out and drank and drove again, and was pulled over for driving erratic. When police pulled him over, he was intoxicated again. Truly an example of a person who obviously didn't care to learn his lesson and had zero remorse for taking 4 young lives for him to go out and do it again. Here this guy gets a heavy sentence for a terrible mistake that he actually is extremely remorseful for. Not saying he should have gotten a slap on the hand, "Do the crime do the time". But man, they really stuck it to him. I think he should have gotten a lesser sentence in my opinion.
How do you know he’s really remorseful and not just an act so he gets less punishment?? . And why should how remorseful have to do with how he’s punished. He should have consequences, it was what he chose to do was drink. He could’ve chosen to call someone to take him back home or called an Uber or not drink at all if he couldn’t get back some other way.
I feel for both sides. It's heartbreaking all around. For those comparing his situations to others. Yeah it sucks but I'm glad judges are being harsh of these sentences. It happens too often. Im glad he is remorseful but ultimately he killed someone. And it is your responsibility to be aware of how much is too much. Unfortunately some choices we make not only change our lives but others as well. Hope this is a cautionary tale to not drink and drive.
EXACTLY! You’re the voice of reason here. So many people in the comments are saying it’s too long of a sentence but I disagree. He killed a man and unborn kids and now the lady can no longer have kids. How is 41 years ridiculous? He made a selfish decision that ruined the lives of so many. If that was your family who were the victims you would not be saying this. Until these hefty sentences for selfish drunk drivers become the norm, people will continue to drink and drive, ultimately killing innocent people while they walk away without a damn bruise

That’s a despicable sentence. Sure he deserves to be punished but rapists and murderers who INTENTIONALLY kill people in cold blood and show no remorse have gotten far less. The lowlifes that raped and murdered a girl in a park in front of on lookers were only given 26 years when they should have been sentenced to death. This guy showed remorse. It doesn’t bring the victims back but he doesn’t deserve a worse sentence than those who commit violence intentionally.
Whether he had intent or not he still decided to drink and drive costing lives of so many innocent beings. If you're struggling with anything you need to reach out not harm yourself and others...we all have problems but ppl like this need help in learning how to react properly. I'm glad he's remorseful and hopefully this time he won't repeat history.

Let this be a lesson, you drive drunk you can become a murder. Personally, I take the never drink alcohol approach, life is better for everyone by not drinking.
Even as a teen, drinking and driving has always been my biggest pet peeve. There is absolutely zero excuses for it. If you have the money to go out and drink, you have the money to call a cab. If you're drinking at home, do not leave your house for anything. This is absolutely heartbreaking. Not only did she lose her unborn twins but she lost the ability to have more children. I don't care how remorseful he claims to be, in a situation like that you take your sentence, you don't ask for leniency.
Most drunk drivers don't even remember getting behind the wheel. That's the whole "disease" part of alcoholism. Not to mention alcohol lowers inhibition, increasing the likelihood they will feel more confident in their skills. It's not so cut and dry, kids.
@@mckricks1 the point is that if you don’t have the money to get yourself home safely, you don’t have the money to be drinking at all. As in you shouldn’t go out drinking knowing you can’t afford a cab, etc.
Omg this poor woman. She is so brave and good hearted for forgiving him. This is one of his biggest gift! Those 2 unborn babies are now with God in peace. ♥️ I hope God bless her with a child.
The sentencing of these cases are lop-sided. I just watched a woman who killed two grown adults, leaving 3 young girls orphans. She walked past the car with them in it to leave the scene and got 21 years! What?! Another woman killed three teens and got only 29 years! But this man gets 41 years for killing two unborn twins? Something's really wrong with the justice system in America. All of them are murderers but clearly women fair better and different sentencing for races as well. smh This system is straight up crazy. I feel for the victims and even some of the convicted (some are truly remorseful) but the system is broken.
Correction. 2 unborn twin girls, causing the mother to become infertile, and killing her younger brother. But I agree, the justice system is broken and in certain states, it seems to be getting worse. Case in point, the crash that caused the death of a child, and the teens got off with a slap on the wrists.
I think he gotten off with less time than he deserved, he probably could of racked up a sentence of at least 70 years if judge wanted, he took 3 lives and injured 1, why are you so upset he's got too much time? He got a bargain, he's a warning to others what will happen when you drink and drive
@@kevinkwiatkowski7197 I said nothing about him getting too much time, my point was judgements are not balanced - he got double the time vs others who caused more deaths and by some who weren't remoseful at all.

Need to be some type of law for all states to agree like kill a person = x amount if years per person. Makes the process faster too. Plus maybe some will reconsider driving thinking about years they lose if get in accident.
The West is Gynocentric in the way it approaches most things. Women or rather feminism is the ruling ideology currently. So men usually get the heavy hand and women usually get the soft touch.
This last part is not hyperbolic in the slightest:

And then someone, on accident, making a mistake on the road and crashing into someone, killing them. Most people would say these two crimes are completely different
Alcohol may not even be related to the accident, FYI. Its just that the way the state sees it, if there is alcohol involved, it does not matter whether the alcohol caused the accident, or just poor driving, or some other 3rd variable. This is why its especially dangerous to drive drunk- because if something happens while you're driving, you're automatically guilty of a crime rather than a traffic violation, pretty much regardless who was actually at fault

The truth is, and many people have a hard time accepting it, is most drunk drivers are actually decent drivers... Most alcoholics would drive drunk hundreds of times before a DUI. Omg this poor woman. She is so brave and good hearted for forgiving him.
This is one of his biggest gift!
Those 2 unborn babies are now with God in peace. ♥️
I hope God bless her with a child.
Unborn baby’s with god ??? Man people really have low IQs
Amen
Crazy how the people that seem to show no remorse get a fraction of that time
The sentencing of these cases are lop-sided.
@@rebekah1362 A drunk man backed over his wife at the SLC airport with their kid in the backseat. He killed her. He is getting no more than 20 years. Probably out on parole in 5.
@@kevinkwiatkowski7197Murderers get 21, literally only half of what this guy got. Get a grip.
Sad thing is, because he was honest and likely cooperative to take his punishment. He got a higher sentence than most. Criminal thugs who take no accountability tend to get the most leniency. Something about this needs to change.
Dui is not a criminal act is an unwilling choice this system is doomed
He plead 'no contest' which means he didn't admit guilt, which means he WASN'T honest about it.
How is it the scumbag drunks always survive these accidents? The victims and their families are the ones who end up getting the "life" sentences.
