  • Welcome to my series 'Top Five' where I countdown the top five of a particular topic in the Progressive Rock (and related) genre! These topics are selected by my wife or inspired by other RUclipsrs, and the idea is that these are the top five that come immediately to mind, with very little preparation.
Today's topic is the top five bands I should love, but just don't! Tell me down in the comments, did I forget your pick? What would your top five list look like?
Please leave any suggestions you might have for future top fives in the comments below as well!

I agree with quite a few of these, but not Marillion. You are right, though, that there is a certain weirdness to the fandom, though, with people aligning behind either one singer or the other....But then I'm 100% in the Hogarth fan camp, so maybe I'm part of the problem. Never mind.😁

Nice video, Nathan. I have bands like this, too - and share a couple of yours! Likewise, there are bands that I can't understand why more people aren't into. Music tastes are so finicky! 🙂

Completely understand and respect your views Nathan , we have to differ slightly in our tastes , otherwise the variety wouldn't exist and choices is what we all need.
Fish-era Marillion is how I became an obsessed prog nut , which at the time of neo-prog was pretty much all of the wider prog genre to get hooked on. So Marillion made me venture back to the 1970's to discover all the classic bands we know and love... for this reason alone Marillion are crucial to my musical life and I absolutely adore those first 4 LP's , and the Live album's too.
Great video Nathan and your honesty in explaining your choices really interesting too. Fantastic stuff. 😍🎵🎵🤘

Ah, yeah… King Crimson. I agree 100% as it’s my experience as well. True titans of the prog world and I can’t get into them. Some of their material hits for me, but most doesn’t. Funny you mention Transatlantic at the end because they’re another that I tried to get into, and failed.

I struggled with post-Fish Marillion till I hit Brave. That opened my eyes to what H could do. Since then, I've been able to get into pretty much all of their stuff.

I've been a King Gizzard fan for a few years but I completely see how they can be intimidating to get into, and to find the right record for you, as you say, takes time & effort. I was the same way when I first listened to them, but I liked the song Catching Smoke and saw the KEXP set from 2022 and I was hooked. I wasn't a big fan of their metal stuff early on, but have since come to love it. They just finished the first part of their North American tour and broadcast every show on RUclips for free, so you can check that out too.

I agree with King Crimson. I've tried many times. Same with Pineapple thief. I definitely like Coheed & Cambria and some early Marillion. Fun topic.

King Crimson is my favourite band and love almost all their albums. For me the ones I need to spend more time to get into are those between In The Court and Larks. For a while I struggled to get Pineapple Thief as I really wanted to like them since Gavin Harrison is in the band. I put some time in and now I see the light, at least on the 2nd half of their catalog. I agree on Marillion. Maybe in time. Probably my greatest challenges are bands like Opeth and Tool.

King Crimson, Gong, anything Steven Wilson/PT, Devin Townsend, Leperous, Haken & Van der Graaf Generator

  • @michaelhylanddpt
    @michaelhylanddpt 5 дней назад

    We are kindred spirits, almost…
The ones I agree on completely are Pineapple Thief and KC. I’ve listened to several PT records and it just doesn’t do it for me. Now with KC I definitely have a more diverse view on depending on the lineup and the album. Here’s my personal KC ranking:
    1. Red
    2. Larks Tongues in Aspic
    3. Court of the Crimson King
    4. Discipline
    5. In the Wake of Poseidon
    6. Lizard
    7. Islands
    8. Starless and Bible Black
    9. Three of a Perfect Pair
    10. Beat
Not sure about Thrak I haven’t delved into that one. And as far as others you mentioned I honestly don’t have an opinion yet as I really haven’t discovered Marillion or Pain of Salvation.
My honorable mentions would also be Gazpacho, KG/LW, and Leprous, among others. Honestly I’m not a huge fan of Gentle Giant but have a ton of respect for their work.
I do have to say, that I am a fan of certain Devin Townsend albums but not of all of his works.

I’m with you on Marillion. And I never understood why King Crimson are regarded as one of the best prog bands of all time, I find them very inconsistent . Don’t apologize for your taste, you like what you like and people should respect that.

    Love Marillion both eras.
    My 5 plus:
    All things Neil Morse
    Flower kings
    King Crimson
    Dream Theatre
Quite a bit of 70s prog including Yes and Gentle Giant.

Good video Nathan. I know Uriah Heep wasn't a prog band but they did have a little bit of prog moments. Did you ever get into their first several albums? If so which one was your favorite?

    2) Haken
    3) Dream Theater
4)any symphonic metal band( I love classical ,but not this marriage...so far)
    5) Coheed And Cambria
Honorable mentions ( bands that I connect on certain songs , or ONE album)
    Tool
    Leprous
    Pain Of Salvation
    The Flower Kings
    Transatlantic

I would agree with all the artists you have chosen, I would actually take it a lot further, for me there is only 1 artist that I at least like every song they have ever made, that artist is DREAM THEATER, I would say every artist I like has either a few good or great songs or albums, I don't have a 2nd favourite because DT are on another planet.

Being a massive Coheed fan (they are probably my favorite band), and having watched a good bunch of your videos, I had a hunch they would be on this list when I saw the title. ^^
I have several friends who are as much progheads as you and myself, but who also just aren't much into Coheed. I think, most of all, it's a case of either you vibe with their overall sound or you don't. If you love it, you'll be a fiend for it. If not, they are probably not gonna get much playtime from you at all.
Personally though, I consider them fully prog. It's true that a lot of their songs are kind of poppy and are missing some of the obvious characteristics of prog, such as odd time signatures, unique chord progressions and song structures, and changing soundscapes (although they definitely also have songs that fit the bill). But while they don't score high on those parameters, they score high on things like theatrics, esoteric lyrics (and by extension the concept), and nontraditional vocal line structures (even if it wasn't Claudio singing, you'd know something "wasn't right"), things which I think are as much defining characteristics of prog as the music itself. And the degree to which they push on these buttons makes every song very distinct, despite having seemingly plain musical structures and similar soundscapes, because Claudio in particular does whatever the songs call for, precedence be damned. Sorry, this got long-winded. I told you I'm a fan. :D
But again, I get why they aren't your cup of tea, which is completely fair.
P.S. I see that Mammoth record behind you there. I've had that album on repeat for the past couple of days. The intro to And The Stone Said: If I Could Speak goes so hard! Thank you for bringing my attention to that band in a past video!

Fair! I had a really hard time with Coheed at first. I’d recommend giving The Willing Well suite from Good Apollo 1 another shot! Although I totally understand just not getting it… part of the appeal is a certain affinity for the 00’s post hardcore scene. I’d also recommend the songs Evagria the Faithful or Goodnight Fair Lady from The Afterman Ascension for different shades of the band.

I'll definitely check those out! I've enjoyed things here and there (in college I was super into 'No World For Tomorrow', one of my favorite albums from back then), but I just have found myself underwhelmed as time has gone on...but I definitely will keep an open mind and give a fresh listen to your recs!

Hi Nathan. Dave from London here. Really interesting video, and real food for thought. Some of the acts you've mentioned like King Gizzard, Devin Townsend and Pineapple Thief, I'm sort of with you but haven't really heard enough. The three bands from the 70s I never got into at the time are Van de Graaf Generator, King Crimson and Gentle Giant, although I have since changed my mind about Gentle Giant. And although I am a huge Yes fan, I've never warmed to their solo material - believe me I've tried! Big exception is The Story of i by Patrick Moraz.
Maybe I'm jumping the gun with a band I shouldn't like, but I do, but it's Cardiacs.

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle  11 дней назад +2

Great idea for a follow-up video...bands I shouldn't like, but do anyways! Definitely got my wheels turning on that one! Van Der Graaf Generator aren't really my cup of tea either (probably should have mentioned them in the video, but just felt like I haven't really given them enough of a chance), but it is pretty well-documented that I'm a big Gentle Giant fan, but totally understand that they don't appeal to everyone.

  • @brettstrausser3846

I could have done the first part of this video, myself, Nathan! In full agreement with all your choices and most of your observations, with KC, TPT and Marillion excepted. For me, I love the earlier albums of all 3 of those bands. The last 3 studio albums of KC I don't care for at all. The last 3 studio albums from TPT are a bit more alt rock and I agree, a bit "samey". I prefer Bruce Soord's solo material, although it is even less "prog". Fish era Marillion is the peak, but there are a few H era releases that I go back to (I own almost all of them - hope springs eternal). Brave isn't one of them, though. I usually find a few tracks per album that I really like. Don't fear the backlash, honesty is the best policy!

I found I agreed with almost all of your list except for Marillion, seeing as they are just about my favourite band.
For me, and this might hurt your soul Nathan, but for now I have just not been able to get into the Flower Kings. I've tried but there's just something that's held me back every time I listen to them. I will keep trying so maybe one day I'll get them.

If you can forgive me not totally getting Marillion, I can forgive you for The Flower Kings 😉. I am liking Marillion more and more as time goes on, though!

After watching some of your Videos i more and more thought that our music taste is very similar. Very often your optinions match mine 100%. And this Video shows it again; i feel the same for Coheed and Cambria, King Crimson, The Pineapple Thief (except that i love the "Nothing but the Truth" record) and Marillion. But Nathan... Pain of Salvation....mate ;-) for me it would be "Yes" i think; never really got into them. Prog On & Cheers

Probably the biggest one for me is Dream Theater. I bought a pack of their first 10 albums and I am a fan of John Petrucci as a guitarist, but just can't get into their music. They have songs I enjoy, but I am not a big fan of their vocals.

This may get me crucified, but I just can't stand Steven Wilson. Tried 4 different Wilson albums that were hyped to be the greatest thing since sex. I found it hard to even finish them. The fact that he always comes across to me in interviews as being arrogant & his own biggest fan dosen't help my opinion. Also, I wish he would leave Yes albums alone. They were the greatest prog albums of their time just the way they were and did not need Wilson's remixes.

Marillion - bored of the rings

I think what doesnt help with Marillion is that the old stuff was folky and stuff and had a jestery medevil feel...and then got Neo
progish and changed....I am a big fan but I get it why people may struggle to sit with it all!!
    Anyway my 5 are
    5 dream theatre
    4 rush
    3 Gentle Giant
    2 king Crimson
    1 Kayak......
And new cat...bands I would erase from all time....
Journey....my god what a bunch of melted cheese...like something out of high school musical...sorry but no way am I listening to that! Worse than Van Hallen with the lead vocalist running around like a ballet dancer..lol and cheesy keyboard chops...like 80s pop!
    Naaaa Fanks...lol
Poor Eddie V H...in the wrong band...he would have been amazing in a hard rock band...Jump...what was that!!
All love to them but...NO! 😂😂
