The "worst" Beatles album (or the least essential, anyway) is probably Yellow Submarine. Beatles For Sale isn't bad; it's just a little too heavy on covers.

The Beatles are a mediocre band who had good songwriting skills but as far as guitar work and Ringo's drumming skills, they do not stand out as great musicians.Ringo is a sub par drummer with limited skills,he reminds me of Peter Criss of KISS,another substandard drummer with no imagination or craft to his work. Now Neil Peart from Rush was a magnificent drummer.

I actually like In the Hot Seat. Man In the Long Black Coat and Give Me A Reason To Stay are quite pleasant to listen. But they are covers. I was listening to this album while I was reading Hyperion and The Fall Of Hyperion by Dan Simmons so the ELP album and these books are linked in my memory,
As for Queen, everything without Freddie Mercury should never be called Queen. And this album with Paul Rodgers, the cosmos rocks, I find it not as bad as critics say. The one problem is it is labeled Queen. It's decades since I listened it.
When I rate Queen albums, it stops with Made In Heaven. Sorry for May and Taylor. I think that their solo output is far more interesting than this "Queen" stuff, especially Taylor.

  • @michaelpdawson
    @michaelpdawson День назад +2

Hi Scott! When I saw Jethro Tull coming up, I was afraid it was going to be another bashing of Under Wraps, which I consider a hugely underrated album. Completely agree about Catfish Rising and Rock Island being the low point in the Tull discography. That's the right choice for ELP, too. Everyone rags on Love Beach, but it's In the Hot Seat that is the real stinker. Can't agree about the Beatles, though. What about "Every Little Thing," "I'm a Loser," "What You're Doing," and those ripping covers of "Rock & Roll Music" and "Kansas City"? Everyone dumps on "Mister Moonlight," but you have to admit that Lennon's vocal is awesome on that. Yes, there's a fair amount of country influence on that album, but that's a feature, not a bug. Cheers!

Nah. I have VU's Squeeze and will happly defend its right to exist. Its a stonking wee album with cracking tunes. Nothing wrong there, and it had an audible link to Loaded. Had they continued, Squeeze would have been seen as a transitional album for the VU, much as Fleetwood Mac moved on from Peter Green. Many deride the album without listening to it or giving it a chance. Similarly those same 'armchair critics with 5 albums' discount Soft Machine's jazzier excursions or late period Gong. All it requires is a well honed pair of ears ....and an occasional beer. And another thing......etc. (Editors note: rant continues for several more hours....)

@@ianbrown3304 Sweeeet! Let's fight! (respectfull). I think Doug Yule rarely gets any respect for his contributions to VU. Loaded might be my fave VU album, and he fits in seamlessly and sounds heavenly on Who Loves the Sun. I was kind of annoyed that Todd Haynes VU doc pretty handily dismissed Doug Yule and doesn't mention Squeeze. But, that said, Squeeze doesn't sound like the VU at all (to me anyway). As i understand it he was making a solo album and got wrangled via contractual obligation and management pressure to release it under the VU name. It probably would have been fine as a DOug Yule solo record but it sucks as a VU album. Without Lou it has no soul. It sounds and feels like a crass cash grab still to this day. And, as I said, I don't fully blame Doug Yule for this disaster. I have tried so many times to get into this album.

Great show, you Groovy Ghoulie! I will state a VERY contrarian take: Styx ~ Crash of the Clown. 🤡 Reason number one is the songs are far too short. Just as you expect it to start cooking, it’s over.
Number two: no lead vocals from the Godfadda of Styx on a full song?! This is the first time that’s ever happened. My theory when they made Will “WeirdAlYankovic” a full time member was that JY would retire. That has yet to happen. I was told about 25 years ago - by someone in the know - that JY’s hearing was shot. We know his voice is now a shadow of its former self. When are you going to retire, Gramps? Maybe never, because if he does, then it’s The Tommy Shaw Show and not Styx. But then again, is it really Styx now without…
Number three: No Dennis the Menace. That nutty cat was the visionary of the band. Is this ragtag group of ragamuffins really Styx anymore? Hmmm… 🤔 the mind boggles. Obviously, Styx are “more Styx” than Foreigner is nowadays, but c’mon man. Everyone raves about The Mission and Crash of the Clown, 🤡 but I feel The Mission is easily the better album. In fact, both of the late period Kansas records are better than Crash Corrigan. And my Styx fandom goes all the way back to 1977.
Oh well, “anyway you slice it, it comes up Kraft!”

Yeah, Jethro Tull's "Catfish .." was a sort of a predictable, dud...but has a few good moments. "The Zealot Gene" was really weak and forgettable (I should mention that my two all time fave bands are Tull and Black Sabbath). Another fave band with an annoying album Gentle Giant "Giant 4 a day". I recently gave my original vinyl copy a spin, and realized that side 1 is "tolerable" and side 2 is annoying. But I'm sure that a lot of people who are not familiar with their previous albums or who are not prog fans, would like it. The production and musicianship is, as usual, top-notch but the "namby-pamby" predictable songs are embarrassing. The recent Iron Maiden album , "Senjutsu" was a real disappointment...Just remembered "the single factor" from Camel, I bought it when it came out and gave it away shortly thereafter.

Catfish rising is not terrible, its only fair. Calling all stations is a return to the progressive roots of Genesis, come on the prog corner should love it! The Beatles "For Sale" has some fillers.
These I never really cared for much:
    - "Words of Love" : I get it. The love for Buddy Holly and it's not bad. Just a bit boring
    - "Baby's in Black" : Not a total stinker, but it doesn't smell good either
    - "Mr. Moonlight" : Now, this is a stinker
    - "Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey!": I bet it could make the roof take off live in the Hamburg days, but not so much on record
    - "Honey Don't" : Ringo dooooont....
    - "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" : It's allright, I guess. But I wouldn't play it at a party.
    - "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby": They really could have done more with this
    But then again these:
    - "No Reply" : In my honest opinion the best song on the album
    - "Rock and Roll Music": This is a kick ass version and evidence of this being a full throttle rock'n'roll band when they wanted to be
    - "I'll Follow the Sun": A beautiful little song with great melodic quality
    - "Every Little Thing": There's a reason Yes did a cover of this, because it's a very good song with some interesting twists
    - "Eight Days a Week": It's a huge hit for a reason
Now these I had to give a couple of spins to remind myself:
    - "I'm a Loser": Never a favourite of mine, still isn't
    - "What You're Doing": Now, this is far better than I remembered.
The album cover, however....it's so good because it tells the story about why this album isn't their best work.
Nevertheless, that was my take on your top posting today. Still trying to land after yesterday's BIG BIG TRAIN gig in Oslo.
Much love from the Oslo Weirdo

My criterion: you have to compare the albums within the band level. For example, in the case of Led Zeppelin, their last album (In through the out door) is a bad album. The band was already broken, relationships were bad, and Page's influence was very limited.
That being said, is it a horrible album? No. But it is a very weak album in comparison to his classic albums, several masterpieces.
In the case of Geneesis (one of the top five prog bands of all time), IMO the big, good albums concluded with Duke. Everything after that is really very weak, weak, bad, pop. Awful.
