what's your favorite body part on the golden oscar statue?
The head
The blank, eyeless face that haunts me whenever I experience sleep paralysis.
nice knee
The toast
i like the chest part
god i just want borat to win something so they have to read the whole title
Bakalova deserves it
Why don’t they just say Borat 2 😭
I hope and pray that Bakalova wins supporting actress
they’d just call it Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
They’ll already do that every time it’s nominated. So, twice.
I have never seen situational irony pay off so quickly in the form of “there’s not going to be too many surprises here” and then boom, Shawn The Sheep, Farmageddon
Onward too lmao
I thought the film got pushed but now I want to see it. Glad that the Oscars nominated a stopmotion film!
Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon slaps, frigg off
Just asking is Shaun the Sheep popular in America?
@@viciousbane569 It did get pushed from Dec 2019 theatrical release to Feb 2020 Netflix release in the US. Its UK theatrical release was in Oct 2019, and got a BAFTA nom in 2020.
yes, Sonic the Hedgehog is in the running. That's kind of his whole schtick
Sonic should've gotten the FX nom over Mulan. Fuck Mulan, for real.
This made me laugh way harder than it should have
@@pepperidgefarm1003 and let's not forget The Invisible Man. those FX are some of the best in indie horror alone.
@@pepperidgefarm1003 it’s so sad bc the original mulan was always one of my favorite movies and now the new one has really tainted it
@@PlanetXerox wait they're not nominated?
Edit : just watch the whole thing damn they did them wrong.
oscars every nomination category: reduce reuse recycle
Breaking each category into subsections, we have Race, War, Women, Based On A True Story, Semi-Original, Disney, and Randomly Chosen Film
to be fair their movie selection this year is kinda limited lmao
@@savarin0 There’s actually more movie variety this year that the 2019 Oscars lol
@@savarin0 actually they’re stepping up this year compared to the previous ones
so what i’m getting is that the problem isn’t that there aren’t as many options, but that the good movies didn’t release in theaters so not many people saw them and they’re kinda underground. that makes sense. the oscars have always repeat movies, i just noticed it more this year
Minari getting so much love YES
As they should
AHHH hii! 💞
Big fan!
Except for cinematography which is BS
I have yet to watch it, but I really really want to.
If Emma doesn't win best costume design the youtube historic fashion community will absolutely riot because that film's accuracy and character is masterful.
Edit: Just saw the Oscars, why do I hear pitchforks?
And the fact that it's so rare to find a historical movie that has costume designs that are beautiful AND accurate
I'm amazed it wasn't nominated for production design - that is just as much part of the amazing look of that film as the gorgeous costumes...
It better win !! I loved the costumes !! 😁🥰
I really didn't like the movie (it didn't do the books justice) but the costumes looked great tho! I wonder if they were accurate?
@@zurzakne-etra7069 i agree but the cinematic experience was wonderful
It was breaking news in Denmark that Another Round and Thomas Vinterberg got nominated - We're all very excited
Good luck
For Danmark!!!!!!!
another round is 🤯 totally deserve it.
Just watched it today it was so fun I loved it
Good job Denmark
I predicted that Tenet would be nominated for Best Sound, ironic since I could barely hear any of the dialogue in the IMAX theater.
I’m dying 😭
i want to personally thank the person who made the executive decision of choosing “farmageddon” for the title of the sheep movie
I don’t know if you’re being funny or not but I’m glad it got nominated and much love for Stop Motion films!
i just think it's a fucking brilliant name
@@gabrielateixeira3636 alright
I love how Karsten was just gunna sink into his chair anytime they mention Borat or Sacha Baron Cohen expecting the long ass title. He seemed to almost space out on Sacha's nom but then they revealed it was for Trial of Chicago Seven lol
I actually like Trial of the Chicago 7, but nominated for cinematography? Wtf
Same
Yea I was confused with that too the cinematography was nothing special
I also liked it, but shouldn’t it have been up for adapted screenplay cause they used the court transcripts?
At first I was like okay but then I realized that it’s decent and it should’ve been another film
Since the other two big contenders are also from Netflix (Da 5 Bloods and I’m Thinking of Ending Things), I think it’s more the case that they’ve focused their “for your consideration” campaign on Mank and Trial. So they could get the most nominations and a better chance of winning.
Minari: gets nominated for tons
Also Minari: doesn't get nominated for Cinematography
Karsten: *"Where's the love for Minari?"*
As someone in the tenet fandom it was snubbed for best editing, score and cinematography the three strongest things about the movie.
Exactly I am so frustrated but glad it got two nominations
Not to mention, about every Christopher Nolan movie is a good contender for Best Sound. But it's understandable why it didn't get nominated for that one. Movie really missed with the sound.
I'm happy it got 2 noms too but I do think it deserved for Score as well.
Agree with all these especially score - that was a no brainer
Good
I'm not a fan of Tenet's editing but yes, score definitely. Cinematography would've been alright but I think production design fits better
I'm Thinking of Ending Things was *robbed* #farmageddonforbestpicturethough
In what category(ies)?
@@VicenteTorresAliasVits I personally thought it had great cinematography. You could've also thrown in a director nom and adapted screenplay nom. Even if it is my favorite film of the year, it's definitely too out there to put as a best picture nominee
Why are you making fun of Shaun the Sheep 2?
@@VicenteTorresAliasVits best picture
@@HAIKALzcy And what would you not have nominated instead?
Looking forward to your Shaun The Sheep review in What I Watched In March
This
5/5
None of them watched Emma so they were just like “eh period piece give it the costume nom”. If they did watch it, it would have definitely gotten a cinematography nomination.
Emma. did have amazing costuming though. Actually period-accurate. But I agree on the cinematography with you
I KNOW
@@withelisa nah I agree that the costumes were great and it deserves the nom, but it’s pretty obvious none of em watched it and just gave it the nom because it’s a period piece lol
@@haydengallina5554 Karolina Żebrowska and Bernadette Banner both have some great videos praising the accuracy of Emma.'s costuming. Highly recommended watching if you're interested in the subject, but merit was warranted! Oscars can be a joke ofc but this nominating makes perfect sense
when shawn the sheep came up in the animated category I legit laughed out loud
same. Zach, what happened to Bart :(
I don’t understand why you’re making fun of that film?
@@viciousbane569 no hate to shawn the sheep, i just laughed about it for some reason lol
@@viciousbane569 damn ViciousBane - about the last movie I'd expect you to Stan - I think many Americans (such as myself) haven't seen it yet. No offense intended.
@@zgaspo ah okay
Tenet not being nominated for cinematography is kinda absurd.
This years nominations honestly don’t seem so bad tbh
Yeah I was actually rly happy
kinda mad that feels good man didn’t get nominated for best doc but yeah aside from that I think the academy really learned from last year lol
Julia Giles yea that movie was really good despite the warning signs
fr fr idk my bff jill was kinda sad tbh lmao
@@juliagiles1547 last year was great, care to explain why it wasn’t?
I’m genuinely heartbroken that Never Rarely Sometimes Always didn’t get any recognition
same, but i wasn’t really expecting it to
Same
haven't seen it but same
same
yup i knew it wouldnt but kinda hoped it would :/
Yah man - I’m Thinking of Ending Things was snubbed for screenplay but also Jesse Buckley’s and Jesse Plemons performances. I would have loved to see Buckley nominated for best actress
toni colette even!
in case you’re new to Karstens channel, he LOVES Im thinking of ending things
Was really hoping Soul would at least get nominated for best picture. Animation is always overlooked
I loved the nominations. Just seeing Sound of Metal get recognised is wonderful
Hell yeah dude!
riz ahmed has been grinding for a while especially since nightcrawler, i've always thought he would succeed so i am so happy for him
Honestly, I don't know 2/3rds of any these films. Haven't seen them, or even heard of them.
But if Borat wins, I'll die from laughter
I’ve seen almost all of these LMAO
you should, actually. this was a pretty good year for movies beside everything, and the oscars did a lot of justice for some great movies
And once again, Charlie Kaufman follows the old saying by Willy Wonka: You get nothing!
He was so happy but then Mulan appeared and his face dropped lmao
lol it makes me laugh that you don't know it's alphabetical order when you are hoping for things that can't happen
I need to watch Minari fr. And personally i'm rooting for Wolfwalkers to win, Soul is good but 2d needs some love too.
Pixar/Disney is too powerful at the oscars sadly 🥴
yeees :((
Same here for WolfWakers, it’s just such a good movie sadly, Oscars has become masive hollOwood/Disney advertisement event.
I'm Irish and trust me our radio stations are going wild over the nomination and desperately clinging to hope. I'm not looking forward to hearing the inevitable winner..
(Yes Soul's pretty great but just letting someone other than Pixar win for once would be nice. I'm prepared to be let down.)
I cried during Onward so I know Soul is gonna rip me to shreds...
I'm thinking of Ending things should have been in contention for a best-adapted screenplay or makeup nomination.
I’M GLAD THERE’S SOMEONE WHO APPRECIATES I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS AS MUCH AS I DO
Say what you will, Delroy Lindo not being nominated ruined my day.
Chicago 7 getting WAY too much love. smh
Good movie but got a lot of stupid stuff like cinematography
At least it didn’t get director
It’s because it’s political and they probably paid for the spots in the different categories
The cinematography was decent but it should’ve been Tenet
Aaron Sorkin is an Oscar favorite
I wasn't a huge fan of Da 5 Bloods, but Delroy Lindo playing the PTSD ridden Vietnam vet definitely deserved an award nomination at least
I swear I’ve been praying internally for the last year for you to watch succession and my heart skipped a beat when you mentioned it
I’m sleeping well tonight
damn, the power you have! More like 'Success on' you amirite!
I'm gonna watch Sound of Metal tonight.
It’s amazing. Definitely my pick for best picture.
I haven't seen many of these nominated movies but this was my fave from what was nominated (edit: watch it with headphones 🤯)
Me too! It’s been on my list for month!
You're gonna have a lot of fun
same
I have a distinct feeling Chadwick is going to win actor
the lack of love for Im Thinking Of Ending Things also hurt my feelings BYEE
I'm thinking of ending things was snubbed
Of course it was too weird for the Oscar's nowadays. Remember when charlie would get nominated a win back in the day. Now instead we have fucking borat 2nup for beat adapted screenplay like what the fuck.
Mulan's special effects were hideous tho
The wire work was pretty good
I swear I saw that the Oscars posted some list and they nominated Bloodshot for Special Effects. I think it was like two or three months ago.
@@viciousbane569 That was the shortlist.
I love how Disney promised Mulan to be a realistic, cultural take but brought in everything wrong.. I'm still mad
Honestly if wolfwalkers doesn't win (and oc it won't bc they always go for the pixar pick) but like fr DID YOU SAW THAT MOVIE the animation was stunning, the story was beautiful and the style god I be lying if I say I enjoyed soul more than I enjoyed wolfwalkers. Tbh super underrated
Yeah, same pick also. Wolfwalkers is really good.
Great pick, but in my opinion Soul has a great animation too because Soul got in to Visual Effects shorlist and i think the details in the movie like people in New York, studio show, and the trantition of lightning animation so stunning for me. Soul got in for Score and Sound too, for me it means the other technical elements in Soul was fantastic too. One of the Soul writer, Kemp Powers got in for Adapted Screenplay for One Night in Miami for me in script Soul is gergeous too about meaning of life and of course we should live every minute of it on earth. Oh yaa, maybe my life related this movie guyyss, so ya great movie too Wolfwalkers 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Well Pixar didn’t win in 2019, Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse won
The only thing I cared about was to not see Tenet in the sound categories
I still can't hear out of my left ear cause of this movie.
i can understand i'm thinking of ending things being too abstract for the academy to recognise it in screenplay or best picture, but it *at least* deserved a nomination in makeup! the ageing and de-ageing in that film was fantastic, and i don't often see makeup used as a plot device like at the end of the film.
oh man I still need to see most of them! I've seen Sound of Metal, which I loved! Shaun the Sheep was a fun time that I saw in 2019 (here in Switzerland), so I'm surprised but glad to see it here!
I also really liked Emma, so I'm glad it got recognised. Hair and Costumes were on point in this one!
I didn’t watch half of these I just enjoy you talking about them, good job mate!
I havent seen any hehe
I'm thinking of ending things getting nothing makes me so sad. It''s my second favorite movie of the past decade and it is clear that everyone involved gave 110% except Charlie Kaufman, who gave 200%. The man is a genius and deserves all the love his projects get.
Tenet and I'm Thinking of Ending Things got totally stiffed
But then again a film or two always does last year it was The Lighthouse
I love the vids so much Karsten! And ur thumbnails are immaculate!
You should really watch ‘The mole agent’ its got this very welcoming feeling, and also it’s hilarious. I think you might even cry out of joy... well maybe, I did really enjoy watching it. 😅😅
ok but how did Emma not get a director nom or a cinematography nom, it's GORGEOUS
I actually think film editing is a spot that I feel Trial of the Chicago 7 isn't randomly taking up. I think the sequencing and montages pieced together well and built up many scenes very nicely. Particularly, the opening scene as well as the overlaying of the actual court events with Abbie's comedy etc. I'm not sure if maybe that falls into a different category but I felt the pacing of those moments was satisfying
Laying on the floor while crying and yelling "why didn't Long Toast get nominated for best short film" is not a Oscar Prediction video Karsten
I'm ashamed to say I have not seen 80% of the movies listed here.
P.S. Cinemas have been closed since January last year, I mean where can I see those? Are they online somewhere?
most can be found on streaming services - lmk what movies in particular that you are looking for and i can find you some places to watch them. :)
Real hyped for that succession video
Hi! here from Chile, love your videos, I would really recommend to watch The Mole Agente, is a Chilena Documentary about elderly and poverty, the actor (a 95 year old man) was told he was going to be a secrent agent, really emotional and nice.
I don’t care if it’s just visual effects, LOVE AND MONSTERS IS EXTREMELY UNDERRATED
It looks neat, I might have to steal my wife's husband's credit card tonight and rent it
I’m Thinking of Ending Things was my film of the year...
Damn it.
Quo Vadis Aida deserves international film awards! Coming from Croatia it made me very emotional, it's terryfing and the directing by Jasmila Žbanić is fantastic!
Watch Quo Vadis Aida!
thanks for posting mr karsten
Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon is a genuinely great film
No Joke both Shaun the sheep movies are great. surprisingly.
okay now I'm not-so-patiently waiting for a whole succession video from you because umm Yes
I just watched If Anything Happens I Love You and did not think it’d get me, but damn did I cry
You have such a nice voice dude, I could just sit here and listen to your vids like a podcast
I fucking hate the lack of love for I'm thinking of ending things. LIKE WHYYYYy. but k.
Yeah I know, just not the year for the Kauf, man
@@WhatSmada nice man hhahaha
Because they need to nominate fucking Borat 2 or Glenn close for the hundredth time
If anything happens I love you made me cry, it’s very simple but very well done
YES i wanna hear what you think about succession!!!
Shaun the Sheep is nominated last time Aardman was nominated it was for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of The Were-Rabbit. Its gonna be either Soul or Shaun the Sheep!
I agree, it’s an incredible film
I really liked Shaun the Sheep film and hopefully Wolfwalkers wins. Glad that Shaun the Sheep was the one that replaced Croods 2 and Trolls 2.
The first Shaun the Sheep movie was nominated too, so I think that was Aardmans most recent
actually the most recent is the first shaun the sheep film in 2015, the second shaun the sheep was the one nominated this year!
Damn I am SO surprised First Cow and I’m thinking of ending things didn’t receive a nomination in ANYTHING. I also wish that Da 5 Bloods got more love but whatever I’m rooting for everyone involved in The Sound of Metal
i love ur voice its like therapy
I'm rooting for Another Round!!
oh maaan I was so disappointed not seeing long toast in the animated short film list
IM THINKING OF ENDING THINGS WAS SNUBBED CHANGE MY MINDDDDDD
Yeah but it was also never getting nominated or had a chance
a movie ahead of its time tbh
cannot wait for the succession video AAAHHHH
Got to see The Father in theaters this weekend, definitely my favorite Best Picture nominee! Highly recommend it.
Tenet: *Misses 2 expected categories but gets production design of all things*
Karsten: "THE TENET FANS ARE EATING THIS MORNING!"
You should definitely check out Collective. One of the most frightening movies I've seen last year.
I was surprised he hadn’t even heard of it. It’s been creating a LOT of buzz - rightfully so. My pick for best documentary is still Time, though.
@@benjadamon I surprised he hasn't heard of most of these films mentioned.
@@thehostofmmm yeah, me too.
I look forward to this video every year, even more so then the oscars
Hey Karsten I have a TV Show recommendation for you, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Watch the first episode you won’t regret it, it is one of the most well written shows I have ever watched with insanely good music. To describe the tip of the iceberg, it’s about a depressed bell hop fired for witnessing the aftermath of a billionaires murder and returns home to find a strange man named Dirk Gently breaking into his apartment to then get pulled into the insane world of this slightly psychic Detective who is a really bad Detective trying to pull together the seemingly completely unrelated events into a mind bending story that somehow all wraps together by the end because “Everything is Connected” (Also one of the main characters is a Corgi)
I think Jason Bourne (2016) is a shoe-in for Best Picture, how about you all?
Fuck yeah, such a good movie
What about Shrek(2001)
@@willmelucci2989 No, I feel like that movie would have been way better if someone else played Shrek. Like, say, Matt Damon.
Hey Karsten, love your videos man🙏🏼
Btw, I just found this channel that kinda reminded me of you:
The Meaning of NERD
Have you heard of him?
As a younger student If Anything Happens I Love You oh boy made the emotions do stuff
Pleaaaaase watch the Mole Agent, it's a beautiful film that showcase elders in a unique way. Maite Alberti is an spectacular chilean director and deserves more recognition
The fact that Kajillionaire and Never Rarely Sometimes Always were snubbed 😭
Haven't seen NRS - what were you pulling for for Kajil? I think Original Screenplay would have been cool for Kajil, Kajil was one of my faves for the year for sure.
@@WhatSmada I think original screenplay and definitely best picture but that's a long shot I know! I just loved it (I talked about it in my latest video) And you should definitely watch NRSA it's beautiful 💕hope you're having a good day!
@@filmzest1157 nice i checked it out! good job, keep it up!
@@WhatSmada thank you 💕
As well as First Cow and French Exit
also as a film student with a focus in editing if the editing award doesn't go to sound of medal then I'm losing my mind
I LOVED my octopus teacher it was so moving and it really touched my soul
Promising young woman and Minari where my favorites of the year. Nice vid dude.
Man, say what you want about tenet but I love that score
i am thinking that soul needed to be nominated in best directed
THE MOLE AGENT YEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....I like that in the beginning you start like "yeah oscars... meh" and now with all categories... I might said this is a good year for nominations and a little bit fair.
It's such a great race for Best Actor this year, honestly. I feel like I would be content with literally anyone winning in that category (maybe a bit disappointed if Gary Oldman because his is the driest of them all and there are worthier noms). Chadwick will probably get it I think, but everyone else up for Best Actor did so great this season (especially Riz and Steven)..
"what's the father"
It's the best film of 2020
that's what I hear. Interesting business move to hold it back, let award seasons go crazy -> and then auction it to the streaming services for the highest possible price. Not consumer friendly - and boy does it make my mouth invert - but I can't knock the business move
@@WhatSmada or go straight to VOD, 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD; no need for streaming service
Man I can’t believe Long Toast got snubbed, such a shame!
As someone from Bosnia and Herzegovina we are all very excited for quo vadis aida, I hoped that you watched it but hey
I need the succession video ASAP!!!
Succession is AMAZING!!! Can’t wait for you to get through S2 the wait for 3 has been TORTURE
yo shaun the sheep is freakin GREAT, show some respect lol
Amen
amazing pun alone, i might just have to watch this farmageddon myself
Minari hasn’t come out where I’m at but as soon as I saw the trailer when it first came out I knew i have to see it
Since you're wondering abt The Father: Hopkins' nomination is well-deserved & Colman's was pretty reasonable (although I don't think she'll win); the production design is pretty nice (& integral to the story, which may also have been a factor).
Should you watch it, though? It's pretty gutting (see: Hopkins' performance) and if you've worked with the elderly or have an elderly relative, it'll hit painfully close to home - which i guess is a testament to the quality of the art, but also? I didn't need that.
