This Song Brought Tears To My Eyes As A Child The Very First Time I Heard It On The Andy Griffith Show Over Fifty Years Ago, And As An African American Child I Learned That All Music Is Beautiful And I Longed To See Those Mountains And Valleys That They Came From. Appalachia Is One Of My Favorite Topics. Music Must Be Taught In Our Schools Churches And Homes Because It Is More Apart Of Us Than We Know, RIP To The People Who Brought Us And Taught Us.🕊🕊🕊
Makes cry and wish my Wife was still alive. She died of a heart attack at 48. Heart problem on her Father's side. We use to walk through the field and woods behind us.
She made that song. I've heard others do it justice, but it was really Maggie's/"Charlene's" song forever more. Never forgotten that song since I first saw them sing it on the Andy Griffith Show when I was a little tacker. RIP Maggie. Country, and Bluegrass music will be poorer without her.
I was lucky enough to meet the Dillards and Maggie Petersen at a TV taping in Nashville many years ago. They were so gracious, and Maggie was just as sweet as she could be! Then in 1980 I saw Doug Dillard again at a Christmas party at John Hartford's house. I mentioned how much I loved this song, and their performance on the "Andy Griffith Show." He offered to send me a tape, which he did. That's where I learned the third verse. Absolutely the most beautiful bluegrass song ever written. Doug and John are sadly missed. But just imagine the jam session going on in heaven.
I always wished Andy had married Charlene. She was cute as a button, could sing like an angel, and just imagine how much fun the episodes with the in-laws would have been.
*She was 15 years her senior.* Andy Griffith would've been scorned by all American women everywhere he went. And Fred MacMurray would've played Matlock.
@@hulkhatepunybanner I didn't realize he was that much older than her. You could be right, then. Still, the family reunion shows would have been fun. :)
Now that Rodney is the only one left, I hope some talented band and singer comes along to keep this song alive, otherwise, it will become little more than a memory
I located the complete lyric to the Dillard's original - "There is a time." - The final verse was not done in the TV broadcast - so I had never heard it before. Maggie has added it in this rendition - "So do your roaming in the springtime / And you'll find your love in the summer sun / The frost will come and bring the harvest / And you can sleep when day is done." It is a vital part of the message of this tune. It was good to see Rodney, Doug and the Dillard boys show they had emotions in real life. Though I had seen them perform before. "There is a time for love and laughter / The days will pass like summer storms / The winter wind will follow after / But there is love, and love is warm. There is a time for us to wander / When time is young and so are we / The woods are greener, over yonder / The path is new; the world is free. There is a time when leaves are falling / The woods are gray; the paths are old / The snow will come, when geese are calling / We need a fire against the cold. There is a time for us to wander / When time is young and so are we / The woods are greener, over yonder / The path is new; the world is free. So do your roaming in the springtime / And you'll find your love in the summer sun / The frost will come and bring the harvest / And you can sleep when day is done." This is a link to the song as broadcast years ago - ruclips.net/video/mzQQibgciRY/видео.html
After their stint as the Darlins, I first saw the Dillard's live in the late 70s, and again in the 80s at the old KFC Fest in Louisville KY--- They were always razzed about their (acting) on Andy Griffith!!!! Great band
I'm seeing your comment years down the road but this song gives me chills as soon as she starts to sing. This song reminds me of my grandparents, who I once watched the Andy Griffith Show with.
No one can or ever will be able sing this song with the magic that Maggie can weave into it and no other band will ever be able to play it as genuinely and beautifully as the Dillards. Together they simply own it.
It’s true from this 40 year old youngster who roamed the mountains of New Mexico and eventually made my way to Texas (I’d like to think I’m a youngster). It’s just gorgeous. Brings me to tears tbh
I was blessed to see Maggie and Rodney Dillard, one of the Darling Boys, in a concert in the Andy Griffith's theater at Mayberry days in Mt Airy, NC, yesterday. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
❤a hauntingly beautiful song about life, love, and dying.I remember watching the Dillard's and Maggie sing it on the Andy Griffith show when I was a kid.
"That'n makes you cry pa." "Well, I'll fight it!" It is said the Dillards got together and wrote this for Maggie. True or not, Maggie OWNS this song! "Well, I believe that's the purtiest thing I ever heard." I agree.
I'm 44 now, been rewatching the entire Andy Griffith show again on Amazon Prime. I've been playing guitar since I was 17 and when these guys come on its amazing! I could tell right away they weren't actors just faking the playing, I knew it was the other way around. She still has a great voice, it's nice to see them still doing these songs. She's so beautiful on the show, I was hoping Andy took her as a gf so we'd see her more...not to be.
I grew up on the Andy Griffith show, which not a lot of 18 year Olds can say, watched it every night with my grandma and now watch with my mom...I've been hooked on this song since the first time I heard it and its just my absolute favourite
Aspeach I'm pretty sure all my kids will grow up on Andy Griffith and Leave it to Beaver. I already own the box set of Leave it to Beaver, eventually I'll buy the Andy Griffith box set. For now it's on Netflix, besides, I'm 14 and don't plan on having kids for at least another 6 years.
+Ponyboy Curtis ive grown watching andy griffith, the first time i heard this song i loved it, as did a lot of other people, apparently. now, im 17 and i would like to note the fact that you somehow got the name ponyboy. you lucked out that nobody else did. That's one of my favorite books.
yeah I can't watch andy anymore because I have seen every episode. but I do tape the ones with the dillards and Maggie--because I am such a big bluegrass fan. this song is just a tearjerker.
Same. I'm 25 now and still will play it on repeat so many times. My dad had my brother and I watching it since we were in diapers. Beautiful show, beautiful song.
Doug had a touch on a banjo like no other. And nobody can sing it like Maggie. They really set the standards of what Bluegrass music is today. I'm glad they were able to do this before Doug passed. Thankyou for posting.
I love this. So sad that Doug passed away in 2012. The Dillards really paved the way for bands like the Eagles and the like. They were one of the first bluegrass folk bands to electrify their instruments. A lot of new territory was charted by the Dillards. A shame more people don't know more about them.
@horseman528 The hair-raising harmonies that are strung and sung, down to their children and grandchildren. "I can't die, we got us another toddler needs taught his voice. Tenor? Alto? And will she want the mandolin or the banjo? I can't go till I know."
This song is epic. The lyrics are beautiful and have so much meaning. I like the different versions of it Andy used on the show, especially the slow tempo one. My all time favourite sitcom, my mother and I used to watch together back in the 60's n 70's. What memories. Still very special to me. Thanks for the post.
the episode that she sings this song is one of my favorites. Because of this song and her. Maggie you have a beautiful voice. The Darlings episodes were the best. My family always loved the music and the charaters made us laugh also
This concert took place in August 2009 in Troy North Carolina. Yes that is Doug Dillard. As of 2010 Doug does not travel with Rodney and now the band is called The Rodney Dillard band. They will be back in Troy this August. Come see us.
I was a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show and its gentle humor. But those episodes with The Darlings (The Dillards) were extra special. It was real Bluegrass music by real musicians and also gave Andy a chance to play with them and demonstrate his own musical talents. Everyone who is inspired by a type of music has to hear it first and this was great exposure for many kids growing up all across the US. The other place for Bluegrass on TV was The Beverly Hillbillies with that theme from Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and their appearances on the show. One kid from New York City, Béla Fleck, became interested in the banjo from that TV show and he’s had quite the career since then!
I have loved this song since I heard as a boy.it is beautiful and now that I'm 65yrs old it has a different more meloncoly beauty.makes me yearn for times that are gone forever..
I need to dry my eyes.my wife of 43yrs and I have found comfort in this song(with charlien singing)many times.and as she says winters coming and we have built our fire against the cold..im going to wake her and confess my love for her again.thank you charlien.much love and gratitude for your voice and choice of music
This is such a beautiful song.... I have always loved it, and although it's performed wonderfully by The Dillards, I think Maggie adds a most beautiful voice to it.
I loved her on Andy Griffith show. She sang it back then. Really good song. Sad we have to get old. I wish the good lord could keep us young forever. But. Let his will be done
Enjoy listening to this. Saw the "Darlings" on Andy Griffith years ago....When it was a prime time show. Love it. Love the Darlings and everyone. Many thanks to "The Dillards" who were actually the Darling Family. Love Maggie Peterson. You still have it girl.
I also grew up watching this show, but never heard this. Introduced my grandkids to this show and they love the Darlings. Just heard this song for the very first time and had to look it up and see all about it. It is just beautiful and it was educational to see it’s history, who wrote it and who’s still singing it. I am so very sorry for your loss. I will be 48 in a few months.
So sorry for your loss.
She is alive and happy my friend . Thought it is hard for us she would want you to be strong and join her in heaven when when this life ends . ❤
America was much more innocent and far freer during the Andy Griffith years. Sad to hear of Charlene's passing. Sorry to see America's soon passing.
well said, be hopeful, though it is hard.
Just like Mr. Darlin, I always cry when I hear this song. It's just too beautiful.
Time goes so fast.
Whenever it comes up in my bluegrass/country playlist at work, I always need to step out of the room for a minute to compose myself.
fight it.
RIP Maggie Peterson “Charlene”. You brought such joy with your character and performances.

Never thought of that but a great idea
What ever happened to Ellie, the first girl he was interested in? The pharmacist?
She was always "Darlin;". Cute as a button, Rest in peace dear lady.

It has a deep beyond its time sound. Sounds so much like a folksy Irish haunting melody I once heard. I love it
