    I'm a career sales guy who left audio video sales to join a window company. I haven't started training yet, but I can see some similar tactics that they implement. I will move forward with the new opportunity, but I will either succeed or fail standing on my morals. I can't stand sleazy sales tactics.

    I work with Rice Windows and Doors in Southwest Florida as a Window and Door salesman. There is a reason that our company close rate is so much higher than our competition. Our sales "pitch" is simply educating our clients to make a decision based off of their needs. I have told more people that they do not need windows/sliding doors more times than I can count. Our reputation is good due to honest pricing and educating clients vs trying to sell them something they don't need.
    Great Video!

    Just wanted your opinion on this tactic I've seen twice now. A window salesman takes out a torch and torches one side of the window to show you temperature differential from one side of the window to the other basically saying it's going to keep heat out and your home cool inside.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 года назад

      What they're showing you is actually true. The windows do a terrific job at resisting heat. The question is not whether or not those windows perform well, the question is which window should you buy. Any high quality window would do the exact same thing. Don't forget the glass is only one all the components in making a decision. The other component is what frame material they are using, and most importantly, who's doing the installation.

    Regarding the vacuum seal argon and value building topic. All of that is true and it's why Andersen's top models is one of the only companies that DONT EXPLICITLY EXEMPT ARGON FROM ITS WARRANTY. Why wouldn't someone highlight that value

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  Год назад

      I'm not going to disagree with you, however, I will say that it's the same system that dozens of other companies use. Anybody who's having their IGs manufactured by cardinal, has the same benefit.

      @@HoustonWindowExperts I believe Andersen seals their glass in house. look at pella and Marvin's warranty. Or even builder grade Andersen modes.
      In the exceptions portion they have a paragraph that excludes the gas. Pella's even states "we do not guarantee at any given point after manufacture, the amount or % of argon present in the glass. Pella INJECTS argon and it is known that argon dissipates over time (paraphrased). Marvin something similar.
      "They'll try to build value" is one of your points. "They have sales" is another.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  Год назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. The more I read your comments, the more it seems like you must work for renewal by Andersen?
      The first question I would have as a homeowner would be, how do I know that the argon gas has not leaked? Putting a warranty on something that I can't even measure would seem manipulative.
      The truth is, all the other manufacturers put a warranty on seal failure. If you have had a seal failure, you obviously have lost your argon gas. A seal failure and a loss of argon gas are the same thing.
      Even if they weren't, spending twice as much on a window then I should, just to have a warranty on argon, seems like a bad investment.
      The bottom line is to find a great window at a fair price that will do what you need it to do. The Andersen window is not sold at a fair price regardless of what it does.
      Obviously, there are people who are willing to spend extra money for that assurance. If they wish to do that, more power to them. I would never try to stop you from doing whatever you wish to do. All I am doing is informing people so they have more knowledge. The more knowledge they have the better decisions they will make. I think we can both agree on that.

    While your information is informative, I don't think you're doing these videos for altruistic reasons. You work for a brick and mortar company and a middle man with inherent cost in your business model. Most consumers want to deal directly with manufacturers and cut out the middle man. Heck with the pandemic people have even learn to shop online. Most consumers don't want to deal with a middle anymore but thanks for the info!

    I’ve been watching a lot of your videos and most of them are great. Though I think you’re being a little disingenuous because you’re using $100,000 example and your price examples and not real world price. I checked out your website and you obviously offer free in-home estimates. If you’re trying for full disclosure, why don’t you publish your prices online so people can make a informed decision before the Salesmen has to drive out… are your sales people commissioned? And are you paying for their gas and time for their free estimate because a lot of the industry doesn’t. There’s a fine line between sleazy and persuasive, and sometimes it gets blurred. Having a background in sales & marketing I would suggest that people pay a fair price for a good window based on information not on the type of marketing the company decides to do. Generally speaking it’s the the salesman that gets the raw end of the deal. And it’s the owners of the company that sets the policy not the sales people. And I have yet met an owner that makes less money than their sales people.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  Год назад +1

      Dave, thank you for watching and your comments.
      It would be impossible for us to list prices on our website because there are so many variables involved with a window project.
      Since we sell over a dozen brands of Windows and doors, and every home is unique, we truly must assess the windows in person.
      Our sales people are salary based, drive employee vehicles, and we pay for everything.
      They're not pushy, yet they close nearly 40% of all the sales calls they go on. We do that by being informative, honest, transparent.
      I do earn more than my sales people, as I should. However, I can assure you that our sales people make terrific money and would never quit their job.
      Every sales person I've ever hired that lasted more than 3 months, is still here. Some didn't last the first 3 months because they were not a good fit for our culture.
      I would invite you to stop by and visit with me in person should you ever come to Houston. I think you will be impressed the way we treat our staff and our clients.

When I spoke with the Andersen sales person, it was a straight up hostile interaction and he said the exact same thing. We don't know from whom we'll buy, but we definitely know who we'll be telling all our friends to avoid after that.

    One thing the salesman did that really sat wrong with me was after asking him several times how much they cost and he did the big shock price and said he can tell we weren't ready for that and he'd just leave. We kept talking and he asked how much we were thinking of spending and if we could only do some of the windows which ones are "must haves". And after working the numbers for a couple minutes he was magically able to get those windows just over the number he needed for his biggest tier discount so we should be super happy and sign the contract now. When a salesman asks you how much do you have to spend it should always throw up a red flag.

    I work for a larger window manufacturer and we're taught value selling. I can agree with the tactics you coined as "sleazy" are correct. We are taught to stay away from most of those, however "first call close" is a metric for performance for all companies, so the buy today has to be at least presented.
    Overall, like you said, if you are presenting a solution to a problem with a window or installation no one else offers makes or breaks a sale. Sometimes it is too expensive for the customer and they have to re-visit the project in a few years or potentially finance.
    When it comes to the ads online, as you said, "We HAVE to take advantage of this". The object of the ads is to get you to schedule an appointment, that's really it.
    To address the budget comments where people are reluctant to answer: We are at least told to ask that because a large number of customers (at least where I live) do not know what they want their window to be made out of. A budget helps sales people in my company know what products we can offer to the consumer. Ex: "My budget is $300 per window" that lets me know that we are probably looking at vinyl. On the other hand, if you are working with a dishonest sales person, that price will likely land a little above or below the budget you set.
    Just a few thoughts from the other side of the coin.

      So go buy only and you’ll need windows again real quick. Over 70% of windows changed are vinyl less than 10 yrs old from companies which promised life time warranties and are out of business. Everyone thinks they can trick the system.
      If renewal by andersen wasn’t great value and lasting product they’d be also out of business won’t you say ?

    • @mnngstar
      @mnngstar 3 месяца назад +1

      @@mrs.ruseva1395 i think the bigger issue is that they claim to not be high pressure sales guys, dropped a 40k quote to me and wanted us to make a decision while he was in the driveway. Then after saying we'd need a few days - he went off on how vinyl windows are terrible. That's great, but again the vinyl windows were less than 1/3 the price quoted. I also had Pella and Marvin quote 30% less for new install and not replacement.
      One week later I received a call from the "Assistant to the regional sales manager" that said our project is really intriguing and they'd like to come out again and give better pricing. I said if the pricing isn't 50% of the quote - don't bother and surprisingly I haven't heard from them again .... yet.
      They're pushy, shady, old school used car salesmen. The product may be fine and yes if it was complete crap people would say it and their business would suffer. However, I bet if those same people could understand that they paid a 30% premium for an arguably equal product (Andersen, Pella, Marvin) I feel like they'd be a bit more sour to Renewal by Andersen.

    I had a mr sleazy salesman from windowsUSA, stayed way too long in my house. Set up an easel, had a big suitcase like box and pulled all his papers and samples. It was ridiculous. He did most of the things you said and more. He must have asked me 8 times if I would say yes and sign a document. Every time I said no. And at the end I looked him straight in the eye and with disgust in my voice I said no for the last time and he got the message and left. I said to myself never again. He was trying to sell white vinyl window. Super wide borders. Ugly. I did get a $100 walmart gift card out of it that he gave me right off the bat. But I knew from the beginning that is was just a cheap tactic. I spent it happily for wasting my time. He even had me talk to a guy claiming to be his boss to try and schmooze me. The whole event was sad on their part.

      Yes, them and another company from down the road from in Arkansas uses that exact same “let me call my manager” gimmick. The competitor to the company you mentioned is WORSE because they present their window in comparison to a cheaper window they claim to have but actually don’t. Very sleazy and disgusting tactic. I really don’t know how anyone can employ such tactics.

Again this is the guys that have been doing it a long time bc it always comes down to 3 things budget need and timing.

    power windows also said, when i was balking, that he would go out and ask his boss if they have two incentives. one is to allow us to take a survey because feedback is necessary. the other was to let our house be used for pictures *if* we do all the windows. when he stepped out i told my wife he will come back and tell us he will be 'allowed' to give us those incentives for our area code. he said 'wave me in when you are done talking and i will come in and tell you what my boss said.' i waved him in quick and lo and behold! both incentives were 'allowed''
    and he sat at the head of the table- we did not have a chair there, but he pulled a chair and sat there. i told my wife i was annoyed by that because we do not need to move chairs to the head of the table.

Company advertises buy two - get two for free. So, $42,000 came down to $21,000 but only for today. NO. Well, then I will take my samples to the car. Comes back in - how does $17,000 sound. NO. Back out comes back in - I can take off some more since we have an incentive. $14,000. NO. Ok, how much do you want to spend. NO. Next day, manager calls - guy must not have known about some special deals we are getting from our manufacturers. NO. Never deal with a person whom one does not trust. From ex head of sales of major insurance company. I would have fired the guy.

One thing I noticed is his monthly breakdown pricing was so much less if we said “yes” now vs “yes” later. My defense against a sleazy sales pitch is embedded deep inside of my sigma brain. Whether your title is a salesperson or you are a complete stranger, you are treated as a salesperson and ever more so if you are being excessively nice to me. I stand guard until I find a reason to fully trust you (this rarely happens).
    However, I try to be up front about what I know and make it clear that I don't want to waste our time but serious about doing business together. The discussion is to negotiate terms and price. Equally, I'm hesitant to fall for the low price tactics too as there may be hidden costs that level up in the end. You get what you pay for but can easily overpay in most situations.
    Understand what you are buying including what you want, what you need, what you don't, and stay clear of sleazy sales people by telling them you have done your homework and will not tolerate the pressure to sign anything. Most will back off and neutralize their approach. Most are scared as they were not trained to handle you. Some will keep going with their push. Send those folks on their way back to finish watching Glengarry Glen Ross DVD collection.

      At the start of the last recession I had a guy from ‘Anglian windows’ in my home telling me how busy he was and how many hours he was working. I thought to myself it was probably because there was little demand so he was having to work harder and longer for each sale; my company had just had its 2nd round of redundancies and the (UK) economy was looking bleak. He told me about their move to new offices. I knew the building as I drove passed it for work. I therefore knew it had been mostly empty for years and they would have probably offered a massive discount for any company interested. He was trying to sell the strength of the company and I was too polite to call him out. They had their typical 50% off sale. I.e. they double the price and then offer 50% off.
      I always wish I was more quick witted as I should have told him about a special offer I was running. 100% on top. Starting at a price near zero that I would be prepared to double.

    Thanks for this video! It’s a must have before letting a salesman in your home.
    Power Windows recently came into my home for a “quote”. I didn’t expect it to be a 90 minute sales pitch and luckily for me this pissed me off enough to be a tough sale. One of the tactics they used was “Other” prices. They listed prices for Anderson, Pella, Home Depot subcontractors before giving their price, so much cheaper than the rest. I was insulted they felt they could tell me what others charged, as if they wouldn’t lie and I’d trust them on it. I made a mental note to compare the prices.
    Other price drops: a discount if I provided before/after energy bills, so they could “prove our windows do what we promise”.
    I told them I’d sleep on it but he kept pushing. From how his attitude changed, I realized they don’t sell after they leave the house. I said thinking it over was a principle and I wasn’t changing my decision. He left and took all the price quotes he previously wrote down, including the one for the job, which told me what I needed to know.

      To present accurate pricing, we must take measurements of people's windows and determine what type of installation will be required. Once we have all of that information, we can print out a detailed estimate for the project. There is no reason for negotiation because our pricing is accurate and fair. We do offer a 5% discount for people who are willing to write a check instead of use a credit card because that saves us money.

      Since you sell 20 different windows how do you avoid quoting pella, Anderson and Marvin at customer’s request so they can make an informed decision? Surely you’re questions pair it down to more than one window. Or do you hone in on one window and give general ranges for the others?

      Even with many brands to choose from, there are typically only be a couple of products that suit our clients interest the best. That is the reason for having an appointment and spending some time in the discovery process. There is much more to this then just quoting pricing on windows. I think that is where many window companies fail. They have a window that they insist you buy from them regardless of its suitability to your needs.

    I must admit. You’re the best salesman I’ve ever seen. I have an in home sales business and also sold new construction for 7 years. I sold with the same approach as you. Fair pricing, no gimmicks, and all questions to help the people’s get what they truly want. I call it the straight shooting approach
    Honestly and sincerity sells!

    If those companies ran their 'best ads' and no customers signed up, imagine what will happen to their business if they do not come up with a better deal or at least recycle the previous ads.

    This is why I talk to realtors in my area to find good contractors. Good windows for half the price.

      Well you are still over paying sir, small contractors get the cheapest windows and materials to make the biggest pay day they can. They also work a lot faster so they can make that amount in one day lol. Over all you spend less but got less. So it makes sense why it would be cheaper.

    Great video! I started in the windows sales business 6 weeks ago and disagree with 75% of the tactics. Sometimes people do need a push just because they have a difficult time deciding. My approach is more open and honest and im catching heat from my manager. But end of the day you either really need windows and doors or you don't. If I can be helpful and offer a good or great product then all that's left is price. Alot people have no clue the cost of windows and doors and now in 2021 going into 2022 the cost of everything has been increasing. Its not the same price it was 1 year ago or 5 years ago. I've heard these comments and people have unrealistic thoughts on price. But come back full circle, IF you truly have a need, bite the bullet and pull trigger on your home improvements. They will pay for themselves over time. Once again, great video and I feel I'm alot like you. Its nice that your successful in your Business and gives me faith i can be a solid honest sales rep and have a career I'm proud of.
    Thank you!

      "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" Matthew 16:26
      I'm glad to hear that, Robert. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people out there in our industry who are just flat out predatory and deceptive. and it's only going to change by people like you who decide to do it differently. As long as you keep conducting yourself with integrity and honesty you will be successful. I wish you all of the best.
