Didn't expect to comment on a window video today but really wanted to say how great and informative this was. A true expert and great salesperson. Loved how you explained the pros, the cons and the true purpose of each so we could make an informative, trusted decision. If I lived anywhere near Houston, I would be an immediate customer. Thank you!
I absolutely would like to thank the gentleman doing this video for his openness as to the differences and not just trying to push the most expensive product. With all the information given, the consumer can now make a decision as to what best fits their needs and the most expensive is not always the best. It depends on what best fits your needs. Thank you, Sir
I would hug you if I lived in the south! Thank you so much for such valuable information! Now I know why I freeze to death every winter up here in Minnesota. The builder put in double hung windows!! I'm sick and tired of wrapping them in plastic every winter. I will be buying single hung windows now thanks to you!
Just want to thank you Jeff for all your advise. We are looking at replacing about 30 windows in our Victorian home in North West Iowa. Your information is going to help us make a solid informed discussion. Thanks again!!! 👍
Wow- mandatory viewing for anybody in the market for windows! Thanks for the great info- we're building a house and were considering double-hung, however, we're going with single-hung for all of the aforementioned reasons. Double win- better window for our wants/needs, and less $
I can't thank you enough for this very well explained video. I am building a new home and researching windows. I was leaning towards double hung for the ventilation in the summer and ease of cleaning but after this video I am going with single hung. For me it's all about energy efficiency. Going outside to clean a window in a single story home isn't a big deal and your right about blinds and curtains getting in the way. If I lived in Texas I would be buying windows from you. Thank you, thank you. I'm not crazy. My husband was insulted when I told him I didn't like his double hung windows. We have two whole porch walls full of them. I gave him all the reasons you illustrated, without my having ever seen or heard anything before, regarding windows. I just based my opinion on what I observed with those windows. I told him I didn't think they were as energy efficient as the old fashioned ones. He thought I was nuts, and just shook his head. I knew I wasn't, but now, thanks to you, I have proof that I'm not. He even showed me the so called, easy way, to wash them. I told him I prefer the old way of getting on a step ladder, to do the job outside in the sunshine. Great video. Thanks.
I identify. Providing evidence of one's, let's say "right-ness", sometimes causes further irritation, I find. I hope your mister appreciated your smarts better after you showed this to him!
Excellent, informative video! I always thought the single hung was just the cheap way out. I ordered 2 single hung cheap windows for an old storage shed that gets incredibly hot in the summertime and didn't even know I bought the best window until I watched an expert, you! Thank you!
Thank you very much. Exceedingly helpful. I live in an historic area that requies wood windows so Im glad i watched the entire video on why wood windows are double hung
I have double hung windows but as far as cleaning I hate monkeying with the tilt mechanisms to clean. I got a squeegee and handle from Lowes (single story) and some concentrated window cleaner. Mix in a bottle and spray and I can clean them just as quick. So my next windows will be single hung. Plus I prefer a narrower frame look and the weather tight advantages for those cold winter winds.
Just came across your videos while searching for window replacement. Awesomes work and thank you for the educational video. It is true that knowledge is power.
I added my info in JeffList and hoping to get some information on your recommended windows company in Maryland. Thank you , Again ! @@HoustonWindowExperts
Great video. Came across your channel while researching vinyl window replacements. I live in the Atl area and am recently retired and plan on this to be a DIY project. As you stated, moving frames without panels is a game changer for me, and I am part of that 20% that does clean so therefor leaning toward double hung tilt. On a lighter side, had a good chuckle at time 14:55 when you said, “if a lawnmower hits your window. . ”. I know you get hurricanes in Houston, but I haven’t seen too many flying mowers in this part of Ga. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been debating which one I should install. I've been thinking of a Double-hung Window because I live in a tropical, humid place and needed more opening for air to come in but now that I'm listening to you, Single Hung indeed is better and specially when it rains & storm. Thank you very much!
There is always a trade off, even with windows! Double hung is cool for cleaning purposes only, but every other advantage including cost seems to go to single hung. If you have more than one window in your room, then you'll get airflow with single hung as well. Up until this video I was so set on double hung, but this was eye opening on pros and cons. Especially living in Chicago! Plus, how often am I going to be cleaning the outside of the windows? It's not like it's daily.
I would like to know if single hung windows come with double pane I'm considering single hung windows since I have a one story house in FL I can clean from outside
on the flip side if the savings in terms of efficiency is minimal then 40 extra dollars on the extreme side is not too bad for those who prefer those benefits of double hung. Like most things in life its about preference you may not clean windows but trust me there are those who do and still pay to get them cleaned. Difference and variety are the spices of life my friend and its what makes the world go round. Thanks
This video helped me figure out why my place was so drafty. Since we live in a place known for strong winds and having new windows that had a draft issue bothers me.A candle , match and patience.....found the issues and fixed them as much as I could. Passed the information to my daughter since she has the same issues with her new windows as well
I wish I saw your video earlier. We purchased a new build and the builder talked us into buying single hung tilt windows. Now it's winter and I can feel cold breeze from the sides. Thanks to your video, I now know why lol. I wish I selected single hung non-tilt windows after watching your video. The windows would've looked nicer and no cold breeze lol
at 7:00 minutes into the video you are pointing out how hard it is to clean a double-hung tip in window and I agree it is hard, but I have single-hung windows and it is not possible, at all, to clean the top sash. So I must hire a company that has very long ladders to get high enough to clean the top sash.
All good points. We do clean our own windows and find it easy to do but it is a two-person job. There is a workaround if you wanted to use something to prop up the bottom while you open the top but my wife and I just do it together.
I clean windows professionally and occasionally make use of the double tilt windows. The bottom sash, in my experience, you can just tilt the bottom sash all the way down till it rests on the bottom frame of the window, and then tilt in the top one. Have never had a problem doing that? Also, he demonstrates at the end that the sashes are removable, which is another option when cleaning alone. Everything else was great information, but the cleaning issue was over exaggerated.
Issac, you're a pro. I don't think it's super difficult but if you were like me and had over 100,000 windows installed in people's homes, you'd realize that getting a few calls a month about this and having to dispatch a service tech can get expensive. I don't have much preference for either option except I see the drawbacks to DH not worth the effort or expense unless someone really wants it. Thank you for watching and your comment.
@@HoustonWindowExperts I understand that you probably get lots of calls about this. But that doesn't mean that in this video you have to make it look like you have to be a gymnast to clean the windows, that doesn't seem like it would help the situation, haha.
I'm a 77 year old who lives alone. I don't have to hold the one sash when I clean the other. I can just let the bottom sash tilt all the way down while I clean the top sash.
My old landlord replaced my kitchen with a double hung tilt window and one day the top pane dropped fell and broke into the kitchen while we were at work. I’m just happy my Rottweiler didn’t get hurt or get out
thank you so very much for your explanations, i am a gc home owner in florida and am doing my own drawing and your tutoring on the subject has made me go with the single hung for my plans. As ya know fla has strict wind noa's and this is what I needed to find out, thank you so very much Tim M.
Had a salesman by today, who seemed confused by the idea of a non-tilting window. Didn’t think he had ever sold those and wasn’t sure if such a thing existed. The solution provided was Marvin windows and will be getting back to me with an estimate. I see the original video was 4 years ago but does this combo still exist?
Ya know, I'd totally stop in and see you about some windows if I lived in Texas. You more than answered my "what's the difference" question with your frank, explanation.
Ditto to all the positive comments posted. I appreciate you giving us knowledge, weather were living near your business or across the country, your a blessing. I truly believe getting understanding of all the benefits available, causes one to invest into a better quality window, without fear or doubt. The money invested does not over shadow peace of mind on the decision one makes.
Thank you for the honest and in-depth comparison of double hung vs. single hung windows. I'm also nowhere near Houston but would be very comfortable shopping with you and your firm if my home was nearby. I have original 1947 wood windows that I love because they have beautiful muntins that help reflect light into the house. I'm not sure if the top sashes are operable or have been painted shut.
Thanks for watching and your comment! I started a website to help people locate a great window company near them. We may have someone in your area. Please visit TheWindowExperts.com
May have missed it but didn't see in any of the comments that one disadvantage of the single hung is that you additionally have to remove the screens to clean the windows versus not having to do that with the tilt-in double hung.
This was educational..thanks. my issue is in holding animal rescues in my home. Closing the door at all times makes the room unbelievably muggy. I bought a portable AC for the horizontal windows in the bedroom. I was shocked my maintenance guy said as long as the ac hose was in the window I couldn't open it! I felt claustrophic for my rescues. Now im trying to find double hung. They cost a fortune. 400.00 for a 36"x36" @ home depot with an astronomical 400.00 more to install. I can get my maintenance guy to install but the cost is mind boggling. I want to be able to open the top window at times when its cooler in the evening! Sad things cost so much.
You can remove the bottom sash and the top sash if you would like. I've just found that many of my clients have trouble getting it positioned back in correctly. Like I said in the video, it's just a matter of preference.
I'm literally window shopping right now, and I think a vinyl single hung window because I have a single hung wood frame window. However, the top half has leaded glass, so it's a tough decision. Thank you.
Thanks for the explanation. It’s very unlikely I come to visit yo, because I live in the Netherlands. But this thing came up in a video about the differences in windows in the USA and the UK. The single hung window is familiar to me, from older houses. The always got stuck, but that were the wooden ones. Double hung windows were not known to me. In my house I’ve got tilt and turn windows.
I always washed double hang window by myself, just rest the window on the chair, it is easy and I laughed when you explained about the difficulty some people had,....wow some people have serious problems lol
That circulation option you mentioned is THE very reason double hung windows exist. During the hot months youd open the top at one end of the house, and open the bottom of another window at the other end of your house. This is a big reason restoring old 100 year old double hung windows are regaining so much popularity; that and the old growth wood theyre made of.
Glad I seen your video I had some one go to my house a did exactly as you said he gave me the numbers 11 windows at over 2000 a piece and now they are calling yo get the this night only deal
Thank you for watching. By the way, I have a lot of great window company friends all over the country. We may know somebody near you. Please check out JeffsList.com
Thank you. Through explanation. It would be great to get tips on how to determine a good window company. If you're the best, what points do we compare? So far, I've learned to get a lawyer to review the terms of the contract. The contracts, even on 5 star companies, have left the homeowner wide open for problems. How can the homeowner determine whether the window has been installed properly? We are not the expert. My windows worked on inspection. When they failed later is was because of an original installation problem. Yet when I consider getting replacement windows, the contract requires the homeowner to signoff on a proper instaulations. My lawyer said she would never agree to a contract like that.

Great video, very informative and easy to listen to. Covered all the pro's and con's and i feel i can now make an informed decision and not be disappointed in my choices.
Thank you for putting this video out there. It makes me feel even better about keeping my old single hung window and getting new storm windows. My storm windows were broken, and I had a lot of companies trying to sell me on double hung windows that I didn't necessarily need.
Congratulations! By the way, there is a double-hung, which is what I describe in this video, and then there is Double-Pane. Don't confuse the two. Double-Pane windows can be single-hung or double-hung.
Thanks for the video. It sounds like single hung give the best efficiency which I always assumed but you now have me thinking a single hung with one sash tilt out is kind of pointless and a single hung non tilt ou may be the best way to go for max efficiency.
A tree branch hit the lower window on a double hung window. The lower sash was cut and broke. Is there a way to replace it? Should I take out the window and bring it to the window co. & have the sash bead replaced?
Hi Jeff! Here I go again with another question 🫣 We’re now considering getting the Windsor Double hungs in the kids’ rooms upstairs since the windows will only be 23 inches off the floor. And I doubt that the WOCDs will allow for enough of an opening to allow considerate airflow. (We need that flow on this hot island of ours!) But to make a long story short (too late).. I’m now wondering wether it would be very noticeable on the façade of the house if we do a combination of double and single hungs 🤷♀️ Would love your input…again.. 🙈
The double hug is definitely going to look different than the single hung wood. I'm not sure that anyone would notice but you do need to understand that they are different.
Great video. Pretty sure you just saved me some money and provided a fix to the drafty windows. What are your thoughts on mixing single hung and double hung? I'm thinking double hung downstairs (less windows and more apt to open top and bottom) and single hung upstairs in the bedrooms and office. Also, trying to decide between Marvin and Alside Mezzo. Thoughts?? Thx in advance.
Thank you for watching! I started a website to help people locate a great window company near them. We may have someone in your area. Please visit TheWindowExperts.com
Very informative! Thank you Jeff! Great video! Have you ever had customers installing single-hung windows up side down? I would like to have a single-hung window in my bathroom but I cannot open the bottom part due to privacy. I would like to slide the top part down though. I would like to avoid double-hung windows. Any recommendations? Thank you!
Great video. I am very interested in the single hung style WITHOUT the tilt feature. Is Amsco the only brand available with the wrap around captured track design? Looking at either vinyl or fiberglass construction.
Mike, thank you for watching and for your question. I believe that there are some others that are built that way as well. I know that Pella has a product that works that way. It's made out of vinyl.

On most brand of windows, the single hung and double hung do not look the same. If you're okay with mixing profiles, I can't see a reason why you shouldn't. Of the windows You mentioned, Marvin is the best.
Very nice video... Use a barstool to hold up the windows so you can clean them! I do that with mine.. Mine are single hung and tilt.. And with your video I am glad that I didn't upgrade (if you will) to double hung! But I do have to get up on a ladder to clean the upper window. I also use Nufinish polish and it helps keep them clean longer..
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for mentioning the wind... I live in Florida so I wont buy double hung until they make a change! Very informative videos!

When mounting a replacement window, do you suggest using the manufactured screw holes? I feel like this is common sense but I am not finding anyone expressly saying that . I have seen to pre drill the hole. I had someone tell me I could run screws up the frame. Then another technician said that ruins the integrity of the frame. Any information would be helpful. Thank you
If the window comes pre-drilled, try to use those holes if they line up with the framing you're trying to screw into. If they don't, put your screws where needed to hit framing. Just don't put any screws in the bottom of the window and you'll be just fine.
@@HoustonWindowExperts I am thankful for your time sir. I have paid for a professional installation and found mismatch screws in my windows. They certainly did not use the cool locking screws I have seen mentioned on multiple RUclips channels. I'm most fearful that the poor installation is going to greatly affect the products value. I can not stress enough my appreciation for your taking time to comment back to me.
I believe the reason the technician was saying it would ruin the frame is because the CSR was suggesting running upwards of 6 screws per side and I see no examples of any one saying that is proper. I am in a bind being a service/install guy but not in this field.
Thank you for providing this information. I do have one question. In the event a lawnmower does throw a stone and a pane needs to be replaced, what happens to the argon gas that was original to the window that is supposed to help with the insulation factor? Does that just escape and is no longer valid or is that somehow replenished during the replacement of the pane. Thanks
If you have to replace a double pane unit, you will not replace the single outer pane, you will replace the entire glass unit. (Both panes). The new glass unit will come from the factory with the argon gas already installed. All you need to do is insert it into your existing window frame.
Some manufacturers also make a half screen that is on a track. You can slide it to the top or the bottom half of the window depending on which sash you want to open.

Ya know, I'd totally stop in and see you about some windows if I lived in Texas. You more than answered my "what's the difference" question with your frank, explanation.
Thank you for watching
Ditto to all the positive comments posted. I appreciate you giving us knowledge, weather were living near your business or across the country, your a blessing. I truly believe getting understanding of all the benefits available, causes one to invest into a better quality window, without fear or doubt. The money invested does not over shadow peace of mind on the decision one makes.
Thanks
Your honest opinion is priceless. I would definitely remember to get new window replacement from you. Thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback.
Excellent! Great insights into window anatomy and performance.
Thank you for watching
Great explanation on the pros and cons of the different type windows Jeff.
Thanks, James.
Wow great explanation, very helpful video thank you , living in Chicago i will go for the single hung
Everything I needed to know to make an educated decision. Thank you sooooo much!!
Angie, thank you for watching and your comment!
Great video Jeff. I sell windows in Denver and have had several customers reference your videos. Very informative. Thanks!
Hi, thank you for watching. I'd like to chat with you. Could you please email me your contact info?

Jeff
Thank you for the honest and in-depth comparison of double hung vs. single hung windows. I'm also nowhere near Houston but would be very comfortable shopping with you and your firm if my home was nearby. I have original 1947 wood windows that I love because they have beautiful muntins that help reflect light into the house. I'm not sure if the top sashes are operable or have been painted shut.
Thanks for watching and your comment!

Thank you so much for sharing! Love the information and knowledge you sharing, your explanation is unmatched!!!!
Thanks
May have missed it but didn't see in any of the comments that one disadvantage of the single hung is that you additionally have to remove the screens to clean the windows versus not having to do that with the tilt-in double hung.
Good information. Learned a lot about single hung.
Thank you for watching
Great information Jeff, thank you! Wish you were in Georgia!
Thank you for watching!
I absolutely agree......I wish he was in Georgia as well :-)
This was educational..thanks. my issue is in holding animal rescues in my home.
Thanks for helping save the babies! I'm sorry about the costs issues. That actually sounds low compared to what we're seeing in Texas.
So why wouldn't you use the option to remove the double hung while cleaning instead of two people? I've been doing it for 30 years on mine all alone.
You can remove the bottom sash and the top sash if you would like. I've just found that many of my clients have trouble getting it positioned back in correctly. Like I said in the video, it's just a matter of preference.
Great Video, Great Salesman! Much respect from Louisville, KY!
Thanks for watching and your comment!
I'm literally window shopping right now, and I think a vinyl single hung window because I have a single hung wood frame window. However, the top half has leaded glass, so it's a tough decision. Thank you.
I appreciate all the information given. WOW!!! So glad I clicked on your site!!
Thank you for watching
Thanks for the explanation. It’s very unlikely I come to visit yo, because I live in the Netherlands. But this thing came up in a video about the differences in windows in the USA and the UK. The single hung window is familiar to me, from older houses. The always got stuck, but that were the wooden ones. Double hung windows were not known to me.
In my house I’ve got tilt and turn windows.
Thank you for watching. I'm glad that I could be of help.
I think tilt and turn windows are used in Germany as well. I fell in love with their windows when I visited!
Yes, they are.
I always washed double hang window by myself, just rest the window on the chair, it is easy and I laughed when you explained about the difficulty some people had,....wow some people have serious problems lol
Yes they do..
I love this guy!!! Great information. Thank you so much, Jeff! You rock.
Thank you for watching and your comment!
Glad I seen your video I had some one go to my house a did exactly as you said he gave me the numbers 11 windows at over 2000 a piece and now they are calling yo get the this night only deal
WOW, that's crazy!
This was a great video.. wish we had a business like this closer to me..

Not yet, I should do that. Look for it soon.
I wish you sold windows in Colorado because you are awesome!

Great video, very informative and easy to listen to. Covered all the pro's and con's and i feel i can now make an informed decision and not be disappointed in my choices.
Awesome 👍
El mejor video que he visto hasta ahora sobre el tema, y créame si le digo que he visto decenas de ellos. Muchas gracias y saludos desde España
Gracias por su comentario!
Thanks. I was just getting ready to purchase double hung.
I hope this helps!!
Great job explaining. Thank you!
Jeff which one does better against noise?
Single hung.
Thank you, Jeff...I wish you were based in NJ
Is there a such thing as a double hung window without the tilt? Thank you for this video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not that I'm aware of. The only ones I've seen that way are old wood windows.
A tree branch hit the lower window on a double hung window. The lower sash was cut and broke. Is there a way to replace it? Should I take out the window and bring it to the window co. & have the sash bead replaced?
I would contact a local glass company and explain your situation to them. It might be able to just swap out the glass for you.
Thanks for a well done video, however, my 2007 windows both tilt and slide on the bottom only. Would these be ‘single-hung tilting’?
That's correct. It's what we call a single hung tilt window.
Man you just opened my eyes. No questions asked
Great 👍
This was extremely helpful - Thank You!
I'm glad it helps.
I’m in Harris County. Do my windows need to open by code for a three story townhome.
Only in bedrooms. (Unless there is a door to the outside in the bedroom.
@@HoustonWindowExperts Okay, thanks Jeff. We’ll definitely have to weigh our options then. Thanks! 😃
So informative! I’m replacing 22 windows soon. Wish you guys were in MD.

Thank you!
I'd just buy a double hung and screw the bottom closed. You cannot install it upside down or it will not shed water properly.

Thanks for the tip!
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for mentioning the wind... I live in Florida so I wont buy double hung until they make a change!
Very informative videos!
Thank you for the informative video! unfortunately, I am nowhere near Houston or I would gladly come in to your showroom if nothing else just to thank you!

The only time we use that many screws in a window is when it is in a wind storm application and required by code.
Thank you for your honesty
Thank you for watching and your comment.
Great video that popped up after some other video. Very helpful explanation with a practical demonstration. Great job and thank you!
Great! Thank you for watching.
5;50 min. heat cold air circulation example is great but where is the screen??? which way you like the bugs coming in the top or the bottom?
This window can be ordered with a full size screen that covers the top and bottom.
@@HoustonWindowExperts TOO DARK WITH THAT HAHA
Some manufacturers also make a half screen that is on a track. You can slide it to the top or the bottom half of the window depending on which sash you want to open.
Wow. Really good info right here buddy. I will be buying windows from you. I am buying a house and it needs new windows. Now I know the place to go.
