Thank you for your honest videos! They are so helpful and encouraging. I'm trying to decide if I want to become a full-fledged micro bakery. I sporadically sell my bread through a local shop and also to friends. But, my real love is teaching! I started by doing a couple of workshops at my home, but now teach 2 sourdough workshops a month at the local shop that sells my bread. I know I could sell more bread, but I need to decide how much time I could devote to baking weekly. I can only bake 3 loaves at a time in my oven. My husband and I also plant and tend a huge garden and do a lot of food preservation. Thanks again! It's been exciting to watch your bakery grow!

Thanks for sharing your story and if you know anyone in your baking community who is DISABLED and is trying to start a baking business or already has one, please ask them to share their story.. I haven't found any microbakers who are disabled or living with a medical conditiont that interferes with their baking BUT, who continue to bake in spite of it. Seems quite challening doing what you do and keeping sane and healthy!
@@Terri-o5q 🫶 I know it could be challenging but you don’t have to scale so big to have a successful microbakery you can do 10 loaves a week if you want to have a side business.
I went to a fancy-dancy Culinary school for baking and pastry and before I paid for schooling I had been in Food Service for 6 years. Hotels, 4 star restaurants, Michelin star restaurants, small bakeries, large bakeries and ethnic bakeries. In school, I had a wonderful teacher/chef that taught the business end of how to start up a bakery and the financial aspect of the business. I graduated in 1993. The following comments are my opinion based on 42 years of Food Service experience which has always included Baking and Pastry; Baking is based on an apprenticeship process. It’s only learned through that lense. Only when you work with someone can you ever achieve the almost impossible task of making a very modest living from this career. Most folks won’t do the above. They figure that if they can make a sourdough bread at home, and it is loved by many, you can turn that into a money making career. 😢

Thank you for this video. I’m thinking about starting a micro bakery. I’m wondering if you have ideas for pickup areas? I can’t use my home due to HOA regulations.
So, I've been binge watching your channel for a week. I searched "how to bake large batch sourdough," and there were were! Your videos have been so helpful; thank you. I've been baking and giving away bread to test interest, and the feedback has been very positive. Question: How do you handle no-shows for folks who have pre-ordered/paid? I'm inclined to establish a no-refund policy, but wondered what approach your experience led you to prefer. I feel that until I can get a routine client base established, I'd need to require pre-payment.
@@pollyester4281 oh thank you so much that is so sweet. I recommend you do a no refund policy. It is a lot of hard work to make the low and you don’t want people requesting them not showing up and getting their money back and then you’re stuck with bread. Trust me I have done where people just ordered and pay until they picked up and they don’t show up so definitely get the money upfront and then no return or no refund.
Just started baking in August 4-6 loaves a week 100% whole wheat sourdough for a small co-op in my area. Looking for ideas on where else to sell. Hubby doesn’t want people coming to pick up at the house or me to drive all over to deliver so I feel a little frustrated with options. Just using my home oven like you and only can fit 6 -8 loaves in the fridge space at a time so I guess we are not in a hurry. 😊 I guess I need a second fridge soon if we do expand!
@@valeriejenkins5011 that is so exciting congratulations. I totally understand not wanting people to come to your house. This is something that I always struggle with. my suggestion would be to reach out to another small business and see if maybe you can set up a little rack in their business to do just pick ups. The business would literally have nothing to selling the bread they would just host the pick up. This is a good option because it brings people into their store that normally wouldn’t be there and they don’t have to worry about any transaction fees so look for places that sell maybe salt or oils or even like a tea shop a coffee shop something that doesn’t compete with what you’re doing.
