How did you and where were you when you found out about this reveal??
Did you get the premiere time wrong or do I have to wait until tomorrow to see this greatness?!?
I was still on LiveJournal at the time and someone had an icon of Akito in that kimono that said I survived chapter 97 and all I got was this icon 😂
I read the manga, it was more of surprise there.
Some awesome soul was scanning/translating them as they came out so I was reading them within hours of the manga coming out in Japan.
I learned about this reveal in the manga, so it was extremely shocking. I did not anticipate it AT ALL!
I experienced the Akito reveal with the manga so the voice acting had not give it away. That and the fact that the curse had been broken at least once before was mindblowing! Now i'm excited for season 3, we are getting close to the end :)
Same! Imagine living in a world of girly boy tropes in early 2000s manga too, i was shook originally
I would like to point out that when Kureno's curse was broken was right before she had the freak out on Yuki about the whole world being black.
Akito has suffered as much as the rest of the zodiac in her own way, most of it can't be said yet but the one we discover here is she wasn't even free to be her own gender.
Yaeh I agree, it was bad of Kureno to stay all that time. You can't keep someone from crying forever. He wasn't able to fix what was breaking even if he pretended it hadn't happened all that time. In this way he's totally being an enabler. But I think he couldn't bring himself to break her heart that way. Enablers will participate in the abuse in order to keep the peace, even if it's wrong and harmful. They don't have the courage to do the hard thing, even if it's right.
As a manga reader it was a MUCH bigger reveal there lol since you can't hear a characters voice when you're reading. The good news though is that there's so much more to learn about so you guys still have some surprises ahead
I don't think Kureno was wrong to stay as a child, but as he grew up and saw the situation become increasingly unhealthy, he should have done something. At the very least, he could have tried to be a voice of reason for Akito. I'm sure it would have led to meltdowns, but doing nothing while people are being hurt is wrong.
Yeah that’s definitely fair, but we don’t know if he didn’t try
@@whitenoiseanimereacts And I also appreciate how understanding y'all were towards Kurano --he gets bad rap --people forget or ignore the fact that he was young too --14 or 15 yrs old when this happened AND the first one to break the curse. Also a bit of an outsider the trio are older and about the same age wile he is younger and maybe didn't have anyone to help him process what was going on.
And now we move to the beginning of the end 🥲
This season finale is really amazing. It is a bit sad you already figured out about Akito being a woman but honestly, that is just a portion of the revelation and I'm glad they got the reveal of the curse as they did.
Season 3 we will continue with the TEA. And omg I'm excited to see your reactions to it :D
As a manga reader, no one saw Akito being a woman coming. It was a big twist. The anime unfortunately loses the surprise of that reveal when you hear the voice acting and see the interactions with characters animated for two seasons. I also feel like they didn’t use enough he/him pronouns and just kept it vague a lot of the time which leads to even more suspicion. So excited for season 3!! We’re getting near the end! 🥲
I have to agree. The anime spoiled the revelation since the voice and animation made it pretty obvious but in the manga it was a huge reveal. But the fact Akito is a woman is still just a portion of the whole revelation so it does not affect that much that they found out before.
@@lillianbarbieri7771 yeah totally! It’s not really a problem that they knew early haha
@@lillianbarbieri7771 Yeah, I love her voice acting here, but they should have hired a VA who could do a more gender neutral voice, if she wasn't able to.
About the traveler’s story I must say that my mom is a lot like Tohru, when I explained the traveler’s story to her, she immediately said she’s an idiot just like me! Being selfless is a very good thing but how much? I was trying to tell her to stop being too selfless and she got my message because at some point we have to stop and have some boundaries in life. To me this story talks about boundaries, you can be kind and give away your stuff sometimes but you shouldn’t give away every part of yourself to the point that nothing is left of you. It’s not healthy in any way, not just for you but also for people who love you, people who can’t bear the thought of losing you. Also if you wanna be kind and take care of others, how are you gonna be able to do that after you’ve been completely destroyed? So you have to take care of yourself first so you could have the energy to take care of others as well.
What Momiji got from the story is beautiful but not enough. So maybe Kyo calling her idiot sometimes for being too selfless is not actually a bad thing. Every one can say she is a kind person and praise her for her kindness but that’s not enough. She needs some one to actually wake her up and make her realise that she needs to be a little more selfish and Kyo was the only one from the beginning who was trying to get her to see that. Most of the zodiac members see Tohru as this constant source of love that will never end but Kyo looks at Tohru as a person with all of her flaws and all. He knows that if she keeps doing what she is doing ,she’ll break eventually. Every one else take what she has to offer and then that’s it but Kyo usually takes but also gives it back to her like with the rice ball analogy and the plums on our back for example, that’s why Tohru and Kyo relationship is very unique, different from the way it is with other zodiacs.
The traveler’s story was very tragic, we don’t want Tohru to have the same fate. This is the lesson that she needs to learn to put herself first sometimes. This is the lesson we all should learn.and now with Kureno story we can see how being too selfless could be damaging not just for that person but also for everyone around them and instead of positively how being too kind could create toxicity and essentially makes thing worse. Everything needs a balance and everyone needs boundaries in life.
I heard my autistic child scream n said I knew it. We bought the manga to help them identify emotions n what to do and not do in response. It was recommended by their school counselor. So I read them too n used the illustrations for them to learn social cues. But I bought into the story right away. I was shocked to learn akito was a female. My kiddo had it figured out n I was proud.
It was 8th grade when I read the manga in the middle of class what a shock the anime that was released at that time didn't get that far and they had a male voice actor for Akito which sold it. . .i was shocked and in awe of not only Akito but Kureno too
You still haven't got much of Akito's backstory, only through other's flashback but take note of what little you've seen and you can start seeing some relevant things, like how further back she had a better temperament, and then at some points she starts getting worse. Then as you guys have said there's the adbandonment issues. Her emphasis and reliance on the importance of the bond. Next season will delve more into Akito not just on her side and story but also in regards to Tohru. I like how Nobu remembered Kureno and Tohru being similar which was pointed out by Uo or maybe he just noticed it himself. Tohru's similarities to other characters are a great way the show has of pointing out aspects of Tohru that can also be and issue or working against her. Akito's gender reveal gets kinda ruined in the anime but in the manga it really worked . The first anime even had a male voice actor so not even they had been able to tell.
19:25 exactly! I don't blame Kureno ...he was a highschooler (15-16?)when his curse broke and it was already disturbing in itself, being alone without the presence of the spirit he always had within himself, and on top of that his curse didn't only impact him alone but also this little girl he knew since she was born (+her backstory) and she was still quite ok then... I completely understand how this young boy would feel for her ...also he didn't have someone to advise him against the consequences of this choice... unlike Shigure, Ayame and Hatori he had no close friend he could turn to and speak about it (I'm not even sure one of them would have had a better response to that event tbh...but they are older and their personalities are very different too, the closest being Hatori)and since he promised Akito immediately after the curse broke and then was isolated from the rest of the zodiacs so the secret wouldn't be out, he was alone with that decision with no time to really consider it first... when later Akito became more and more twisted it's not like he could stop Akito since she was unpredictably violent and he probably thought staying with her would prevent even worse violent events and he was alone dealing with it anyway...
I think Uo was a trigger for him to consider a different life and this time with Yuki he saw how Akito was triggered by the way Yuki looked at her, remembering her of the way he looked at her then so the realisation of the reason behind that violence could be quite recent... I understand how he was stuck in this life since that dynamic started when he was still young and how it would take time for him to fully realize how wrong that decision was...and it also takes time to decide and act even when you realize you have to change
It's easy to speak from an outsider perspective but being in his shoes I can't say I would have done better
Just wanted to say what a great thoughtful reply -- I have a soft spot for Kureno who gets a lot of blame and hate even from those who "like" Akito.
@@apriljohnson6487 thks ^^
This was such a shock to me because in the manga it was harder to realize (all the boys look the same kind of pretty :') ) It is such a good scene though!!
I think it was interesting that Kureno, as the bird, was the first one to break the curse... or rather, where the curse just broke on its own.
On point with the discussion today :) james raging at the cliffhangers and nobu vibing strong with the story beats, saw that birds thing a mile away haha. Favorite part is Nobu recognizing what Uo originally observed, that Kureno and Tohru are very similar in their tendency to sacrifice the self.
James is right, it’s frustrating that Kureno would enable Akito, but there’s something deeply satisfying about SOMEONE being there with Akito of their free will, since Akito (terrible tho she has been) is in a place of power and extreme isolation. I like the talk about what makes Kureno and Tohru different, but it’s also hard to say since it’s so circumstantial.
Then again this all gets explored x10 in s3 I’m already hyped for itttt
Super super fun. Thanks!
As an OG fan yeah the gender reveal in the anime dose not hit at all in the same way it did back in the manga. Obviously there's the excuse of the voice being an unavoidable indicator (which true) but early series Akito was also drawn much more mascaline in the manga than she appears in the anime (like when Tohru first meets her, Akito litrually rocks up looking like an emo Yugio villian in what appears to be a black track suit lol).
I think the difference between Tohru & Kureno's kindness is pro-active vs passive.
Tohru's kindness pushes her to reach out to others in times of need & encourage them to go out of thier comfort zones to improve themselves as people.
Kureno's kindness, though obviously unintentional, actually leads Akito to remain stagnant in her position as head & in her views about the world.
I also think James definitely has a point about the more questionable side of Kureno's loyalty towards Akito. As, despite Kureno being older then her, Tohru is obviously willing to sacrifice herself but she has also proven on serval occasions to able to question/step in if things cross the line, at least when it comes to other people. Whereas by allowing Akito's behaviour to remain unquestioned for years (despite no longer being under the effects of the curse) Kureno unfortunately dose sort of bear some responsibility (but of course, Akito's actions are still her own once she reached a certain age) for the abuse that's happened within the clan, at her hands.
Yes to the whole evil talk. Akito is a very flawed person who has has done a lot of extreamly awful things but unlike some antagonists she isn't just a one dimentual caricature who was born to be evil just for the sake of it. She was raised her entire life in what is essentially a cult, was turned into it's figure head at an insanley young age, is clearly deeply insecure & mentally unstable. She dosn't have any idea how to behave like a normal person let alone a good one.
IT WAS SUCH A REVEAL IN THE MANGA- i'm so excited for you guys to find out the full picture in season 3
Akito's gender was much more ambiguous in the manga, and a small part of that is because in the manga art style Yuki and Akito are almost identical.
Ok that makes so much sense!!
Wait! I've been MIA on RUclips for a while haha. But I'm so happy to see both of y'all are reacting to anime again! I'm going to see To the Swordsmith Village in theaters this weekend and I'm so pumped!
The thing is since the rest of the zodiac curses didn't break, while I do think Kureno's choice, while self sacrificing, didn't help Akito grow, knowing that only he could've walked away and not the rest, you have to wonder if she would've taken it out on everyone else anyway. So I kinda don't blame Kureno cause in a way it might have been easy for him to walk away with his curse broken but wuld the others have been able to if still cursed?
when i first read the manga, i SIMP HARD for akito because 'he' is tall and mysterious..
so when i watch the anime i was like, nahh people would know that akito is not a man because of the visual and voice etc
I read the manga to know what happened when the original fruits basket was out. The difference between that humor and the seriousness of the manga was a shock…. But when the reveal was made of Akito being a female…. My reaction was “That’s why!!!!” about her treatment of the other females.
It was a much bigger reveal in the manga, since you couldn’t hear her voice😅
It's interesting that he says it was a curse as well because you gotta wonder, if not all of them are free, could you really say the curse really gone? Like, I'm not saying Kureno's choice was supernaturally caused, I'm just saying that it's kinda ironic that even as the one whose curse is gone, he's still living as if nothing had changed. In a way, even if one of them were technically free, the overall curse still remained whether still a zodiac or not.
How much would I have to pledge for you guys to make a reaction series on the EXTREMELY UNDERRATED AND BADASS anime Princess Tutu? Don't let the title and magical girl genre fool you! It's really dark and mind blowing in a way that's sort of similar to Fruits Basket. Please!!!!!
You two playing 3D chess
Lol thanks!!!
Honestly the biggest reveal is in the next five episodes.
There are always two sides to a story. We've only seen the younger ones perspective on the situation but even on Yuki's side, it was clear Akito snaped at one point. Kureno's curse breaking could be that moment everything change. Akito isn't responsible for everything bad she did, in the sense no adults seems to put limits to her actions. You can't expect someone to learn rules if you don't teach them first. Kureno being 26 and Akito being 20, since Kureno still being in his middle school uniform means Akito was 9 at best when the curse broke. She's just a child desperate not be abandoned. That begs the question on why she feels this way, when Kureno doesn't even seem the one she's the closest. We never saw her parents so the logical conclusion may go in that way.
I'm still mad they ended the season on that episode because the next one explains a lot and would have been a better conclusion to that whole season. But that's a problem with season 3 as a whole in terms of adaptation, stuff is missing, important stuff, or make the situation and the characters stupid. But well, at least most of the story was adapted, that's good enough ^^
Hi, James and Nobu! I just want to ask where the Haikyuu upload for this week? I can't find it. You upload Tuesdays, right?
Is it to late to warn you to not watch the new intro for a few episodes? I forgot to tell you before but it might be a bit spoilery. 🙈
Idk, on one side I feel bad for Kureno, but on the other I feel he grossly crossed the line on his "I'm good and kind" crusade. Like, sir, why are you having sex with this emotionally unstable girl that is extremely dependent on you and that still was, may I add, _underage_ when the things between you two got physical?? He never taught her the right things to do, actually impaired her development and never held her accountable for the way she treats others, even tho he is probably the one person with enough power over her to force her to review her actions. Before his curse broke, Akito was just a spoiled kid with attachment and identity issues and an overblown sense of self importance, but ever since it happened she's been descending into an everlasting spiral of desperation that made her try to tie everyone to her by force and abuse, and Kureno couldn't bother to correct her. Not a word about her beating up Kisa? Or when she scratched Tohru's face _in front of you_ ? Or the many years Yuki spent locked up in a room being emotionally tortured?? No??? Wow, okay Kureno, thanks so much for absolutely nothing 🤦🏽♀️
Imo there are five characters that are responsible for how Akito turned out and Kureno is the first one I had to talk about (the rest will be next season, I'm so excited you're finally starting season 3 😭)
Okay.. Kureno might be little older than Akito but he was a child too. He never even went outside of the soma estate. And Akito kept him isolated from the other zodiacs. I don't think he was mature enough to correct Akito. He needed therapy himself, So no way he cud help Akito. I do agree tho he cud hv taken some actions now that he's an adult especially when Akito is hitting a child like Kisa. But we don't even know if he was present when Akito decided vent her anger on Kisa.
@@akritianwesha4151 That's not true tho, just by his clothes in the flashback we can see that Kureno went to the same all boys high school that Shigure, Hatori and Ayame went. Up until he was 15 he had as much as a normal life as any other zodiac, and by a panel in the manga I'd say he has better parents than most and had a "normal" home life. Akito was the one, according to the mangaka, that never leaved the Sohma State, since she was homeschooled her entire life. And she only started isolating him _after_ his curse broke, because then she needed him to be by her side all the time to make up for the severed bond and couldn't stand for the other zodiacs to look at him since they can sort of feel that there's something different about him now. And I understand that Kureno was young and couldn't do anything different than what he did at the time (and I don't even think he should have left her then) but he was already 15yo and had enough life experiences to know right from wrong. And then he grew up, turned 20, 25, and never once thought about teaching her respect and common sense? When this girl you've been taking care of like a little sister her entire life starts coming on to you in a sexual manner out of complete desperation and you know that, what type of person just goes, _sure, I can have sex with her_ ??? People expect Akito to understand all sorts of things that were never taught to her, but Kureno's passivity is understandable when he had the life experience to know that's just not right? I don't think so.
