  • This video combines a previously released multi-part series. I'll be putting multi-part videos I've released into single videos for a nice, continuous flow when viewing. This one weighs in at almost 3 hours, so sit back and enjoy!
    Come along on this extended cut video log of my solo canoe trip. Well almost solo, I did it with my my dog Maddy. We made our way through Algonquin Park traveling 150km in all with 46 portages totalling 26km. We got a whole lot of rain, made some great meals, and spotted some awesome wildlife. Come join me and Maddy on this beautiful solo canoe trip.

    This is by far the hardest canoe trip I've seen on RUclips. Knowing the distance, pack weight and # of portages, it's hard to imagine intentionally planning this trip. Hats off to you sir!

    I did a 12 day solo trip to Algonquin about a decade ago. Started north, into the interior and back up north. I underestimated the weight of the portages as well. The 1st one, short one, was a complete failure. All portages turned into doubles, which of course threw off the schedule, but made the trip much more enjoyable. Longest portage was 5.3 km. The experience was physically challenging, but what an experience. It certainly left a mark.

    Great great great video! Really appreciate the fact that even during your down moments (rain, high waves, etc) you kept filming! Really gives my family a sense of what canoe tripping is like. Particularly appreciated your filming through the rough patches. Too often people doin these videos only capture the great times. Keep these coming. You’ve done a great job on this one.

      I think most people would do better than they think, I've found that soloing teaches you to "get on with it". It doesn't take long before you figure out that if you're not doing it, it's not getting done. Don't feel like making dinner, no dinner for you. Don't have the energy to setup the tent, hope it doesn't rain. Once things start going wrong because of your inaction you quickly learn to act. Thanks for watching and hope you have some great trips ahead.

    i was struggling with a pack canoe single carrying. maybe 75 lbs min. don't know if I even did a km. ended up doubling most. Gonna start doing squats and shoulder presses for longer solos.
    I have the deck paws too...Absolutely love them for portage trips. cheap. durable, dry out fairly quick, thick enough sole.
    I think there should be an unwritten rule, or maybe a written rule, that people meeting people double carrying should carry gear of the other people instead of walking back empty handed. Sooner or later it will catch up with everyone.
    Oh and I guess you figured out by now you didn't need to double back taking the wrong portage into Opeongo.

      I usually have the wrong footwear, when i end up walking for longer, so i always carry some of the bigger bandaid bandages and polysporin, just for my feet. Tends to work well, the antibiotics in the polysporin brings down swelling and soothes, and the bandages cushion it so you can get your shoes back on without it hurting, Absolutely love your clothesline tricks, things I've never thought of doing before. :)

    I like that Prospector 16. Did you also paddle the Souris QUETICO ? It has similar specs but I notice the Prospector has a 4"
    rocker. That seems like a lot for a lake canoe.

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад

      I haven't tried the Quetico but I'd like to. When I picked up my Souris Prospector I wanted something that was really nimble and manoeuvrable in fast moving water so I could quickly dodge rocks and obstacles but also take on the lakes without too much trouble. I also wanted to be able to use it for more than soloing, hence the 16'. I really do like the Prospector but it certainly can be a challenge in the wind when soloing on open water. On my next trips I'm going to bring a 20 or 30 litre dry bag, fill it with water and put it in the front of the boat as a ballast to give me some more stability... someone had suggested that in the comments of one of my videos, great idea. Perhaps something with only a slight rocker would be better suited for me but a light 16' canoe isn't cheap and I'd have a hard time justifying the purchase of another one. If nothing else, I think the 4" rocker has made me a stronger paddler so there's always that :)

  • @fireyourrocketts

    I enjoyed the video, subbed and liked but 48 pound boat and 81 pound pack? ouch!!! -- mine is now @ 27 pound boat and about 30-35 pound pack and I am complaining!! I suppose I could throw a party after watching yours! lol. However, I was in bad weather first time testing my swift ADK Pack 13.6 canoe on the Colorado River; I misjudged the weather and was trapped into current and high winds with guts of 30-40 mph and I was really scared and afraid for my life if I went in the water which is 44 F all year around, enough to get hypothermia in about 40 min. I see your video here you are braving out those waves and winds, I would have waited after what I went through with my boat, I do not think I will paddle in weather like that ever again; I am not an experienced paddler, obviously, hence why I was scared at the point of even crying out for help of what maybe was normal for more experienced folks. The larger the canoe, the more stable, so I keep reading, it is not the same a 16 footer than a 14 or a 12. Here is a link to my video of that scare; ruclips.net/video/sQOuJlgAz00/видео.html

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  5 лет назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video. That pack has been seriously reworked since this video, my base pack is now just under 25lbs which makes all the difference in the world. Sorry to hear about your frightening experience, it can really get in your head sometimes when you're out there, especially when going solo. I've been in a lot of varied conditions and have a pretty good idea of where my limits are at now and over time I'm sure you'll find the same and in that you'll find a little more comfort. It's funny because every single time I record a video of bad weather while canoeing it always looks only half as bad on camera, it's one of the harder things to capture on camera. Thanks for writing and I hope you have some great trips ahead of you.

    • @fireyourrocketts
      @fireyourrocketts 5 лет назад

      @@MaddyTheGoose I want to make a multi day trip to a lake or river with the swift canoe but unless i go with someone experienced I would not go in the water if is going to be windy and if I am cough with the bad weather while already in the water, I would try getting out as fast as I possible can; I was traumatized in that trip on the Colorado river and it will take some going through rough weather again to gain confidence as to not to capsize with the canoe; I rather do that if someone else is there, not solo. I got the Swift one now precisely because stability issues; I own a Hornbeck Classic 12 pack canoe which first day test in lakes in Utah I had also bad experience with windy and choppy waters on the lake where lost control of the boat and was hard to reach shore and get out; that time, there were people on shore watching me and saw me asking for help too but could not hear me, I had to paddle hard to get out but it was not as bad as this last time with the Swift; the latest is more stable as it is almost 2 foot larger; if I was that day with the 12 footer boat, I would have gone in the water for sure! The Hornbeck canoe weight 18 pounds; floats very close to the water surface and does not have much water contact surface as it has hollow cheeks; Swift weights 27 pounds, has more surface contact with the water and sits higher the gunnels from the water surface, which is why I think with all the rocking I had last time I did not went over; I may have overreacted to the situation but I do not have experience on this situations and as you said, the camera angles does not do justice to what it feels to be in it. when the wind hits you from all directions and changes from slow to raging fast, turning you into a sail all over, that is dangerous in any pack boat; I have read Placid Boatworks makes the Rapidfire and the Spitfire which are nicely stable and sea worth but i also read that many of their work people left and went to work for Swift so it basically is the same designed boats by David Yost. In any case, no pack solo canoe should be on the water with bad weather, I think, no matter how experienced we are, it strikes me as a real unnecessary risk that I feel prudence calls for just to wait out the bad weather.

      Hey man, thanks for making this the first video to break your silence on! Glad you enjoyed it, it was a great trip. The tarp I'm using in this video is the Integral Designs Siltarp 2 (2.4m x 3m), it's been a good friend to me during some nasty weather over the years. The weight of my pack was pretty steep, this was before I did much in the way of lightening it up and I was carrying eight days of food, dog gear and food and extra camera gear. I think it weighed in at around 65lbs at the start of the trip but I may be off by a bit... I just remember it was heavy!

It's usually their regular dog food and treats but they just don't eat much at all of their regular food at camp. I'm looking at bringing about half their food and half freeze dried chicken patties which are made for dogs. I hear if you mix it together they'll eat that at camp. That's the Arc'teryx Bora 80. Great pack but I don't use it much anymore since it's bigger and heavier than I'd like since I've lightened my load. I'd never give it up though, if I ever needed a pack that could hold a ton of gear and take beating, it's this pack.

  • @MonkeyNAround

    I am curious, no disrespect intended, but why a canoe VS a kayak? Just curious as I see all of your trips are in a canoe.

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад

      No disrespect taken, it's a perfectly valid question. I love kayaking, I've learned to roll in them with and without a paddle and really like how you don't have to worry about tipping, just roll back over and you're good. I've also done a lot of play boating in a kayak and love running white water in them. It's just that in areas like Algonquin or Temagami there are a lot of portages where you need to carry your gear and your boat. Kayaks are quite a bit heavier and harder to carry. A canoe makes portages doable if not just much easier.

    • @MonkeyNAround
      @MonkeyNAround 6 лет назад

      Thanks I was curious because I have not paddled a canoe much.

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  6 лет назад

      No worries. If I had a really long trip with no portages I would seriously consider doing it in a kayak.

    • @MonkeyNAround
      @MonkeyNAround 6 лет назад

      I have looked at a source to sea trip with several portages in it, and thought about a canoe for various reasons on that trip. One being the portages and the other being the ability to carry more gear due to not having access to re-supply.

    What was th problem with your toe? looks like quite the trip, makes you think about how brutal the trips like that was back in the day for the voyageurs and the native americans who both would have (literally) killed for the super lightweight gear and canoes we have today.

      The toe was infected, not exactly sure from what, likely an ingrown toe nail or something, but it got better with the help of antibiotics. Yeah, those voyageurs had a tough slog of it for sure. Some of their journals are really interesting reading.

    You should release the entire 11 hours if you still have it!

      LOL! Long time viewer here. Very appreciative of everything you put out and this was one of my favourites! Your videos are what got me back into backcountry canoeing again after a long absence.

    Enjoyed this film.but between the carries,the filming,and the paddling ing,there was no fishing time.seemed like all work and no play

      I totally get where you're coming from but for me the work is part of the fun and some trips I know are going to be long days and I won't have a lot of extra time. Also, when I look at the weight of the gear, the hassle of carting it around and my luck with fishing... it's not a good balance at all lol. My fishing skills/luck are sub-par at best. Thanks for watching!

    Best part is when you’re in canoe and not talking & showing nature & in tent at night allowing us to listen to nature. Too much talking

    I find your 8 to 10min length video's too short, however this one is way to long for a single viewing (I also watched it 5 years ago). What do you think of splitting your future videos into 20 to 30min lengths?

      I think putting the entire trip in one video makes it easier. I can watch as much as I want to, and then I know which video to go back to when I want to watch more of it.

      I find the bite-size videos easier to "digest", but appreciate the content either way! Great stuff. The upload time must have been terrible on this one.

      I was hoping that putting it all into one video, youtube would manage where you left off. So you could watch it for as long as you like, when you like. I'm appreciate any suggestions though, always food for thought. I'd just like to thank you for watching.

      I like having the entire video and I can split it up into my own 20 or 30 minute segments. My first video of yours and I'm likin' it!

    why dont you try to fishing?

    • @MaddyTheGoose
      @MaddyTheGoose  5 лет назад

      Oh, I've tried it and I suck lol. More than that, I find the gear tends to get in the way. I also tend to choose fairly long days for my trips so I often don't have a lot of time for it. I may look at doing a more relaxed trip and revolve it around fishing sometime.
