Every year I try to get out and do a larger back country canoe trip. This year I decided to spend a little extra time in Algonquin Park. I wanted to take advantage of the high water levels and paddle the Tim River which is an area that normally becomes difficult later in the season due to low water levels and beaver dams.
This wilderness canoe trip would challenge us through long days of paddling, portages, weather and wildlife encounters.

Great video Jason! Helps ebb the long winter blues of missing canoeing. Neat to see you camping on the same site I visited on Tom Thompson 6 years ago. The Tim river entrance seems interesting. Any ideas how to make the trip slightly shorter route wise or would you recommend at least 10 days?

Planning a full family trip, with my wife, 2 girls (12&6) and the dog. I’ve got a lot of experience with backcountry canoe trips but the rest have limited experience. It’ll be the first time my wife and 12yr old are paddling their own canoe for a trip. I’m expecting I’ll be the mule carrying all the big packs and boats on portages.
Seeing this video is ensuring me that it’ll be worth all the effort. These memories will last a life time for everyone.

Been to the access point near North Tea and the amable due fond river. My son and I did the Tim and almost ran over moose. She stood in the middle of the river and wouldn't budge. We slid by her and prayed she wouldn't stomp us. Great memories.

When i went to Algonquin. My family got a campsite at Mew Lake. Right next to hwy 60 which woke me up all night. Didn't like it at all, but canoe camping looks epic👍

I really enjoyed your video Jason it was really well put together in every respect. Your narration was interesting regarding the park and itt was good to see you were well equipped with equipped for trip with PFD' particularly for the lesser experienced members of your party. Brrr. May would be a bit chilly but I guess you'd be out before the bugs. I usually get out for my first canoe trip the first week of June and the black flies can be a real issue.

Awesome video! I've heard so much about Tim river. I'm really going to have to make it there one of these days. I've only done the "people-y" side of this route... Canoe lake to burnt island. But it was still awesome :)
Thanks. The Tim River can be a bit mentally challenging (it seems to just go on and on) but I prefer the western part of the park.

Did a close route in 1999 with 10 and 11 year olds. Put in a 2 but from Burnt Island went Bird Alder Iris Owl etc to access 7 My camp Pathfinder is located there on Source. Living in California now, and am self lsolating Nice to watch this video but man I miss tripping!

I have not been there on Tom Thompson for 25 or so years. The site i did not know, the view i sure did from your site on the lake, from the angles i know where you are by Bartlett lake. I got charged by a moose just on the other side of the creek in the little bay on the right as you enter the lake. Darn thing swam half way across the lake to get to me as i got too close to its calf. Worst part was i had to wait half a day to get back to my site on Tom Thompson, i plan on going back with my son soon in fact.
Been to Quetico many times never been to Algonquin, what I dont understand guys is your in fishing heaven why no poles, just something else to carry?? And why that big heavy wooden canoe its beautiful but I would hate to be the guy that had to carry that thing over the portages, give me a Kevlar canoe anytime for that, light weight very durable, but your filming was spot on good angles and never lost focus once that I saw, hope you all had a great time!!
Enjoyed the video. We are looking at the possibility of a trip to thearea next year and I am gathering intel by watching your videos, as well as a few others. What advice would you give to a group of experiences Southland paddlers, but that have never paddled north of the U.S. border?

Hi Donna. Thanks for your comment and compliment. The main camera I use for the majority of my videos is a panasonic gh4. It's a mirrorless sensor camera so a bit smaller than your regular dslr. It also shoots in 4k and has half decent audio recording built in. I also use panasonic lenses. The main lens I use is 12-35 mm f2.8. I also use a Zoom h5 audio recorder with a shotgun mic for most audio recordings. I hope this helps.

What was the date., I notice there wasn't a lot of bugs ., so it was early spring ? or
Any more details on the bear visit? One of my concerns with late season camping is how clean the previous occupants left the site.
After the trip I checked in to the park office and let them know. They didn't seem too concerned but commented that they were getting a lot of complaints from that area. I never had an issue with a bear until then... don't like that part of the park. Too busy and too many people leaving a mess.

Did you do any fishing?
Because of the length of the trip and the gear we were already carrying we didn't bring any rods but we did do a bit of hand-lining.

So how does it all work when you go camping there ? Do you just pay for a site and walk or canoe to it and then kinda stick to your own area? Or do you have like free range to go wherever you want and just stay at different sites ? Anyone have a little info they could pass along to me so I have a better understanding of how things work there. I mean it's a big place what's to stop people from just hiking in themselves and doing some exploring on their own without paying for a campsite ?
You need to reserve a backcountry route through Ontario Parks. You don't reserve a specific camp site but reserve a night on a lake. The reservation system knows how many sites are on a lake and only allows a certain number of bookings on a lake. If that makes sense? Here's a link to my page about Algonquin.
