the bob ross of canoeing, great teaching
So far the BEST paddling lesson I have ever seen on RUclips! Thank you very much, sir!
No, the people are from the 70s
Those zippy little canoes look like so much fun! I have an eighteen-foot touring beast. It's great for taking a novice, a couple of kids and a week's worth of food and gear, and it tracks like a dream; but those little guys look like they could just dance on a creek or shallow pond.
He sees you when you're touching the boat.
Don't touch the boat
It wasn't until the end when I realized most of the people in the class have English as their second language when I finally understood why that guy had so much trouble understanding such a simple instruction.
Yet if you watch the instructor, HE TOUCHES THE BOAT. ;) He does not realize what he himself is doing. It isn't really about not touching the boat, but WHEN you touch it. Again, watch him demonstrating before having others do it... he touches the boat with his far hand every time he enters the boat.
@@protahgonist When you are mushrooms like they are, you have no first language.
@@protahgonist When you take mushrooms while being instructed, you have no first or second language.
At 17:40 they were touching the fruit, strange fruit in the forest...what was it??
Glad this popped up on my Recommendeds. Great tutorial, nice little boats. Super wide old school beaver tail paddle, and he's right - it's best in those gentle shallows. I have bigger canoes, but if my back and old hips would allow, I'd have one of those for sure.
Excellent video of basic canoe skills...thank you
Fantastic tutorial!! Thank-you...
thank you for the lessons of wisdom
Love watching your videos , what a plesure ! thanks for shring your time and your canoe wisdom .
Wonderful tutorial. Delivery of the information is so easy to understand and absorb with sublime visual presentation. Thank you so much everyone involved in getting this up on you tube. ❤

Great video. Thank you!
Best video I,ve seen to learn how to use my caoe
great video. the best video so far
Very nice tutorial. Even after all these years, I still miss canoeing. One thing not covered is the quality of the canoe. I bought a Bell Morningstar after years of using the more common Grumman and such. The former was built to be the BMW of canoes, handling marvelously, while the latter are designed to keep you afloat and perform about as well as a Sherman Tank. Those zippy little canoes in the video are great for small people, but I'd bog it down to the gunwales. They're great for day trips and solo adventuring, but only if you weigh next to nothing.... like you see all the guys are managing to accomplish. If you're over 200#, getting a canoe to maneuver as nimbly as you see in the video isn't easy, and gets harder faster as the weight increases. Saw this myself after gaining a ton blubber following injuries to my knee and back. Even the best canoes can only do so much.
Awesome video
This video made a subscriber out of me!
Great video, mitakoiasin !!
A food review for this 75 year old paddler. I especially like the quiet paddle strokes. I often used them to view a variety of wildlife in my early days of paddling.
Feel like I just flashed back to the seventies, and it felt good!
Hi. Very informative video. Looking to go canoeing soon in the UK. Thank you for a fantastic video. Many thanks forrest
Run Forrest run !!
Do yourself a favor and ignore this video. Watch Bill Mason path of the paddle.
I enjoyed watching the naked hermit from Life of Brian giving a tiny canoe tutorial despite that it was of no practical use to me as a paddler myself.
Great video. I’m a fan. Share the love y’all. 👊💪

It's the old dude from the Never Ending Story 👍Props Bro !
Very cool
Finally an elder teaching it the only way it should be taught. Fantastic - thank you.
Regarding his instruction to lean forward with your paddle to go left/right. The paddle seems to be near your face or chest. If you are going down a rapid it might get jammed in a rock and you might get hit as a result. Seems fine in deep water, but i personally wouldn't recommend it it shallow or rapid water.
Chest is a good place for it to be unless the water is very rapid indeed, moreso than most people would be safe on at all. Chest lets you brace a little more solidly and not lose the paddle.
I know many places make a similar canoe, but I love the simplicity of yours. Is there a way to commission a custom canoe through your mold?
He’s hiding a wireless mic in his beard. The Audio is too fantastic. Feel like I’m there ... #dubbed
I wanna touch the boat.
I touched the butt
Extremely useful video. Thanks a lot for posting.
This is great video. I am glad I watched. I have done kayak before with double blades, not problems but I will do my first canoe paddling next weekend. I will have a light 18 pound 12 ft Classic canoe from Hornbeck Boats and my choice of paddle is so far a Wermer Ovation, double blade paddle 240 cm long. Wermer are very lightweight but they are expensive. I was also looking at the Wermer Algonquin carbon one on a Since my plans in future includes soloing canoeing camping trips i try to buy as light as I can. everything seen here is done with the single paddle. I am wondering what is the real difference and the benefits going from one to the other or maybe have both? Having those two paddles I mentioned one end out shelling out a whooping $700.00 !!! just to go as light as you can!
I think I want to be him when I grow up!
Great job - you had your young audience right in the palm of your hand! :) I wonder about the paddle length lesson, though. Sitting in the bottom of the canoe places you very close to the water, so a short paddle shaft makes sense and obviously works well for you. If anyone is kneeling in a larger volume canoe (which would float higher) or sitting on a seat, wouldn't the shaft length need to be longer since there would be more distance between the paddler's shoulder and the water?
Just move over to one side and sit closer to the water, I guess.
I don't even know if I have to say that after five years.
It's correct that a longer paddle is suitable for a different kind of canoe and water. We have otter tails that go from ground to chin, for use on fairly deep lake and high seats (easier for stiff novices)
Very good instructional. What make and model are those little canoes ??
He seems like a fun and knowledgeable guy to do some adventuring with
Never heard of a rudder stroke which just seems like a soft recovery pry (thumb up). He never seems to use a J stroke
this is the guy i always bump into when tripping
idk if it's a cult or what, but the advice is sound for small boats. I love this video, the guy is a master.
i still struggle to do a reverse scull like that. 5:12
Surely if you lean forward with your paddle as far as you can to steer the boat port/starboard down a rapid there is a danger that your paddle will catch in a rock and your paddle will hit you, either hit your face or your chest
That's why you never put it right in front of your face. If the paddle hits a rock, it should shove itself up and over your shoulder, at which point the paddle can be lifted and placed elsewhere.
what canoes are being used here? Make model, kength and beam, if anyone knows
I’m a big fan of boats that you basically wear.
Canoe not so weird, instuctor not that weird, everyone else very weird.
DON'T TOUCH THE BOAT!!
Are those smaller canoes also usable in larger waters like a lake? I kind of like the fact that they can be carried around and one is so close to the water. But where I live we don't have many deep enough rivers I guess. Also lakes tend to be a bit more windy. So there are a lot of small waves. Is that a problem?
They are usable, it's just that their advantages are not as relevant. The kind people use in deep open lakes and rivers are better for speed, since maneuverability is not so important. Small waves shouldn't matter, but the wind can be a problem when you have very little draft/keel since you'll get blown around.
.....when your Mom realizes her Garden Gnome wasn't stolen.....he just got naked and ran off!
was there an oil spill nearby?
So where are the bodies buried.
Excellent 3am RUclips viewing 👀
What brand are those canoes?
We had the canoes custom made from our own fiberglass mold. The style of the canoe, however, is called Wee lassie. If you google it, you can find a few manufacturers that still make it.
What is the length of your canoe design?
is it home made out what make and model its the canoe
+Rambo Israel they are homemade from our own custom fiberglass mold. But you can find nearly the exact same models produced by a few companies under the model name "wee lassie." It is an old canoe design I believe from the fur trade, and at least 3 companies still make them. They're so small (10') and maneuverable they're really fun to paddle.
Here's two places that make Wee Lassie's

hello, Im a carpenter in Switzerland and am really fascinated with this size of canoe.. can anyone kindly share the dimensions and specs of this smaller sized canoe? thanks and cheer!
search for "paddlinglight" there you can get the plans for building the wee lassie (i plan to build it in the future) Lots of free canoe and kayaks plans there
I’d wager they’re about 10 to 12 feet long, 30 inches beam, 10 inches deep.
@13:08 Frog: Silent paddling my a$$!
What size are these canoes? Who makes them?
I think they are the “wee lassie” that we no nah makes.
I’d like to know more about these boats, what brand/ model are they? Size and weight restrictions? Options?
This is the exact boat that I want but I’m bigger than everyone in this video, I doubt these boats would suffice my size.
I think it’s the wenonah wee lassie canoe
Go to hemlock canoe. He makes a nessmuk (wee lassie ish) and Nessmuk XL (like a wee it for bigger people !) super great and knowledgeable guy. He also has many other boats at different sizes. He and his wife are really wonderful.Mine is on order and I take delivery in like two weeks. You got a put some money upfront and then the balance balance upon receipt. ~$2200 total.
Thought he was going to fall in getting in and out, but he's too clever a boatman. I'm surprised he isn't wearing a loincloth.
Fav part "where to beard and debeard..."
I am looking for the Beavertail Paddle... It seems outfitters dont really know the difference. Where can I find one?
dri-kiwoodworking.com/index.html
Here you go. I have a couple. They used to advertise one with a blade like the teacher has.
If nothing else you could buy a standard length, wide paddle then round off the edges. The point is to have a short, fat paddle for working in shallow, slow water.
What brand are those boats?
They're custom wee lassies. Hornbeck boats makes some very similar.

I can row a rowboat. Canoe?
The paddle handle ought to be the lenght of your arm - shame nobody told the folks who made my canoe paddle, now I gotta buy a hack saw and epoxy to shorten it. I knew the damn thing was too big and awkward.
Longer is better in my opinion. Gives more control and lets you paddle standing. My really long paddle lets me stand on the gunnels or flip it and use as a pole.
А теперь то же самое только на русском.
Maybe that swami way of sitting is ok for this little pond and tiny boat on a day without wind and water without any challenges. But really its awful and should not be emulated. Please search Bill Mason the path of the paddle for the real deal.
Different strokes for different folks.

Gandhi is alive and well.
Why do you sit legged in the boat ?? Kneeling is better....
+Bastian “Basti” Canadier Because when the boat is so small like that it, the width is smaller. When you kneel it is so that you can reach over the gunnels and into the water easily, since these boats are so much smaller than a regular canoe, sitting cross-legged makes it easier and more comfortable to control the canoe with your hips and you can still reach over the gunnels. Basically, if he was kneeling in canoes this small, it would be difficult for him to control because he would be sitting to high.
Ok, thank you....
Agree, a pedestal would be much better in every respect. They would actually be better off with narrower boats where they could lock their knees in sitting but kneeling is still way better in every respect (visibility, stability, strength, control, etc...)
Well crap. Now I have to buy a canoe.
What course or commune or group is this? Is it some kind of wilderness training or something? Kinda got a cult vibe at first honestly.

Lets not all sit here and pretend its ok to not wear trousers. Its not okay. Not in any weather, country or planet. Especially with those kind of underwear.
this guy is almost like a cult leader to these guys. let the guy touch the sides of he boat if he wants
I didn't see any styrofoam cups, sorry ...actually is refreshing to see young people learning wilderness skills from someone who is older and knowledgeable....
The guy was teaching him properly.... So NO, he shouldn't touch the side of the boat!!!
He is a cult leader it just isn't a religious cult.
You can’t touch the boat.
Dont touch the boat.
is this a cult??
leader's name is Harry Nippler
The first thing I do when I hear someone craning his head and asking if something is a cult is to get the group's contact information. The most thoughtful work in the world is being done by the people that the mainstream couldn't begin to comprehend.
However, as a bit of searching has turned up, in this case the situation is not so simple. This is not to say that there is not great value in much of the knowledge they carry. For example, this is probably one of the best canoe paddling lessons I've ever seen, and the group's understanding of natural ways is probably difficult to improve upon.
astheteachingdrumturns.blogspot.com/2008/02/
As a further addendum, according to some Native people, what this group knows of natural ways is probably limited to basic techniques (e.g., paddling a canoe) and may not be properly respectful of Native shaman and spirital practice. I encourage you to go to the below "As the Teaching Drum Turns" blog and read and learn.astheteachingdrumturns.blogspot.com/2008/02/ (Later: At least that's what I thought. Read further below; there are wheels within wheels. Maybe he knows a lot more than we suppose.)
Finally, to round out this review that probably nobody will ever read, here is Forrest Carter's (Tamarack Song's) own "Criticism" page on his own site. Here he lists "As the Teaching Drum Turns" at the top, and all other critics that he is aware of. Call it what you will, cult or no cult, I have rarely seen anyone in the mainstream with the courage to openly list his own critics in his own publication. tamaracksong.org/60-2/ (If the link dies, you should be able to find it at Archive.org or go to the website and find the Criticism page.)
There isnt much in this video I would recommend to anyone about anything shown here is nothing that should be used outside of your tiny house pond anyone looking for some real skills should look up any Bill Mason videos and learn some proper skills.
How about looking up "punctuation" and learning some proper grammar skills?

This is ridiculous. He doesn't know what an Otter Tail paddle is. He doesn't wear or even have a pfd in the canoe or meet any canoe equipment safety standards.
I really hate you.
It's probably because this dude knows how to swim, unlike the suburban morons who think canoes are primative and exotic.
Yeah right an his canoe doesn't even wear a registration number.... we all gonna die !!!!
He doesn't know the first thing about paddling. How to sit. He has next to no skills. The guy is charming but clueless. I'd party with him but not in a boat. P.S. the water is knee deep so the pdf would ruin the trip to no advantage.
