  • This is Ross. He's a red squirrel being reintroduced to Cornwall by the Cornwall Red Squirrel Project. The scheme is part of a concerted, nationwide effort to bring red squirrels back into the wild spearheaded by Red Squirrel Survival Trust, whose patron is The Prince of Wales.
The last time a wild red squirrel was spotted in Cornwall was in 1984; most of Britain’s 140,000 are in Scotland, but there are also pockets in the north of England, Wales and on the Isle of Wight.
By contrast its nemesis, the grey squirrel, numbers 2.5 million.
Hopes are high that Ross and his partner Demelza will start to repopulate Cornwall with red squirrels, and in doing so reverse the damage done to this delightful native species when greys were introduced as an ornamental species 140 years ago.
Many thanks to Ian Hampton of the Cornwall Red Squirrel Project for sharing this video with us.
