Biryani is not an Islamic cultural food. The word biryani is derived from the Greek word 'pilaf'. Pilaf means cooked rice. Etymologically, pilaf is a later development. The word’s lineage goes all the way back to 'puzhungal', Tamil word for ‘cooked rice’.

    Was amazing.
We only spent a few hours in Chennai between flying in, and hanging with her cousin before flying out.
We were mostly a bit farther south.
Sambar with dosa, idli, and vada were amazing.
Food all around Tamil Nadu was fantastic, as well as in kerela, even though her aunt says their food sucks there.
They take pride in their food and it’s amazing.

One of the many Chefs I follow on YT is one called Venkatesh Bhat (Bhats are traditional vegetarian cooks hailing from the West Coastal area around Mangalore city), whose father ran a very popular restaurant in the 1950s and 60s called Durga Lunch Home, very popular with the film crowd (my mother actually remembers them from back then). So, having grown up with the masters, he took to cooking like fish to water and grew to the point where he is the CEO of a well-known hotel by the name of Accord.
He specialized in going into the interior small and old towns and villages and learning about long forgotten and lost dishes, bringing it back to his 5-star hotels and serving them with a twist.
During one of those videos, he mentioned that, there must be more than 3000 dishes in South India when you include everything from sweets, savories, etc and also mentions that there are many more that have been lost forever.
Imagine! Over 3000 dishes - only in the Vegetarian space !!!
Speaking mostly in Tamil, within 3 years of starting this more as a lark, he has 3.30 million subscribers (how much would he have had if done in English with Hindi subtitles?) and has also successfully launched a kitchen implements line of high quality and ergonomics promising they would be heirlooms that could be passed on to the next generation (as Indians usually do).

after i travelled to India i always try to find indian food, south indian is harder to find than north indian generlly which is a pity, there is nothing like sheera (sweet upma), dosa, idli, sambar, uttapam, coconut chutney, set dosa, veg set on banana leaf. i also love Kalari, ayurveda...i been to Gokarna, Karnataka, Kerala but still need to visit Tamil Nadu.

As a South Indian (from Andhra Pradesh), who stayed in North India for couple of years, I can say South India has lot of breakfast options whereas I couldn't find many breakfast options in North India. Some of the breakfast items you get in North India are considered as snacks items in my opinion. Correct me if I am wrong!

As a CHENNAITE after living in PUNE for 6 months i feel, too much spice and fat/oil is added in a majority north indian dishes making it unsuitable in the long run. Whereas most south indian dishes are healthy & light on the stomach. But apart from that All INDIAN FOOD are better than western food anyday❤.

South indian food has more flavors than north indian food.North indian flavors are mostly of spicy and sweet but south indian food has an equal balance of bitter, salty, sour and umami.south indian food has foods ranging from oil to no oil, roasting with fire, steamed and boiled.whereas northindian food depends more on oil and frying, more use of butter and ghee unlike south indian food.North indian food has less vegetables, cereals and greens and depends more on pulses.North indian food are generally more colorful and bright than south indian food
