I am a boring guy. I can find endless pleasure in reading the paper edition of the Wall Street Journal with a cup of coffee. I mean all the pages, not just the charts and financials. An 8-year-old girl came over to my table at Panera Bread while I was totally engrossed in my daily read of the WSJ. I went to sip my coffee and saw her sitting next to me. I was shocked. Never having kids I did not know they did this kind of thing. I said hi, I am Buzz who are you? I am Alice...what are you doing she said? I am reading the WSJ a Newspaper I replied. She said, I have never seen someone reading a big paper like this before. Is it fun? I told her, for me it was very fun. I asked where her parents were. Right there in the booth there. But, they only watch their phones and pads. They don't talk to each other or me most of the time. Then she said: can I just watch you read the newspaper? Instead I showed her why I read Printed newspapers not digital. Then showed her how to read one. I gave her a piece to read and in a moment she was off reading. And asking lots of questions. 10 minutes go by, her Mom comes over, in a huff, saying: What are you doing here? Giving me a glaring look. Alice told her, I have been here 10 min and you only noticed me now! That only got the Mom angrier and louder. Alice explained how she was learning how to read a real newspaper. Looking at me I explained the tactile feel of paper and its relationship to enjoying the read which is not given by an electronic thing. The mom listened, calmed down. Told me how her grandfather said the same thing. I am old. You don't have to do something to enjoy. You just have to know what you enjoy doing to make you happy. Happy Trails
hi u! Thanks so much for leaving this comment, it resonated with me a lot! I am with you my friend. I miss real books and real newspapers. And I've survived off the Kindle Paper White for many years now cos i'm nomadic and always travelling for the past decade, but now that we've finally settled down again in Bali I am again purchasing real books and actually bringing my old favourites across from Singapore and totally enjoying just lying in the garden, holding the book, reading it page by actual page. I'm so tired of digital screens pervading our lives and also i worry about how all these flashing short form content makes all of us have the attention span of a gnat. There was always the comics section of the paper which i loved! Calvin & Hobss! Garfield! The greats!
So much truth! I’ve learned to spend my free time writing/drawing/learning so that I can eventually get where I want to be. I miss real connections. I know so many people that fell into the Netflix rut during lockdowns (and that was their way of coping and that’s fine) but they haven’t gotten out of it. I’m having a hard time reconnecting with people when so many just want to watch a movie at home when I miss the vibrancy of life.
hey Steph! thanks for sharing! Its such a coincidence but in the week just past, instead of meditating and taking it slow in the mornings i'm mixing it up by drawing a quick portrait sketch instead and i'm loving the change in routine so far plus it lets me finally get in more art time in my week cos i've really fallen behind recently. I miss real connections too. Netflix really has changed all our lives so much.
Thanks for your insight Jean. I've been following you and other RUclipsrs who have left their comfortable, yet frenetic jobs to live more simply. Well, a month ago I moved to Thailand and left Emergency medicine behind me. After working endless hours through the "Covid Pandemic", I am now living in a small beachfront bungalow on a tiny quiet island. Boring is nice! But, being a very high energy person, I have been using this extra time to use my new environment for fitness and reading. Currently fortifying my trading skills, along with daily runs and swims in this tropical paradise.
hi! thanks for leaving this note and sharing about your own brave journey! I salute your courage to change your life around completely as well. I imagine havin worked the ER for the last 2 years must have taken a lot out of you and the peace and quiet of your life now in Thailand sounds wonderful and I'm very glad for you. In this initial stage you're still in vacay and recovery mode i expect, but you'll slowly find stuff to fill your days with in this new life. Every day here in Bali we are busy - as i type now i'm realising i forgot to cook dinner for my 3 furkids today oops haha.. but yeah fitness and reading is a great start. I also did some swing and day trading back in my early years but i found overall that longer term holding is much more up my alley. Enjoy your life hey! every day is a beautiful day!
People are bored because they don't challenge themselves. I realised years ago that when I get too comfortable I effectively live groundhog day and become a zombie and start getting really restless. And so when I was too comfortable in my career I decided to do something totally different, I was too comfortable in my country so I recently moved to another one on the other side of the world, etc etc. If you stay still and do the same thing for too long a period you effectively die inside.
This completely resonated as well, although you sound very brave and courageous to flip your entire life around and move to the other side of the world in what sounds like a jiffy once u decided you're too comfortable. but yes. Most of us in that urban dwelling life with corporate jobs will be stuck in Groundhog Day for 30-40 years if we don't pay attention. many won't hv the option of uprooting and flipping things around completely, but in the little scattered chunks of time they have they must be doing something meaningful still, prob on a smaller scale, but they shouldn't let Tik Toks just suck their life away!
Yes these are good points. I do find learning something more enjoyable. Some of the things that you have mentioned I have put into daily practice in my life and I have seen the benefits in the short term. I have looked to make my phone more of a learning tool then a tool for mindlessly scrolling on Social Media. I do feel like it is a push to get out and try new things when you have family members dependent on you.
Yes! I do the same thing. Instead of using Insta for general SM n social purposes it’s more of my inspiration board for art and Buddhist thoughts. But in general I try to cut down on social media altogether I felt it’s very bad for my concentration abilities.
there are times where i tell myself to "embrace boredom". What is boring to someone may be meaningful to me- for example taking a 1.5hr walk daily, sounds boring to many, but its meaningful to me as thoughts gather and form during these 1.5hrs, and the greenery around just makes me feel good after that.
i love this note from you, thanks so much for sharing. Totally echo your sentiment. The video was a reflection of my past life back in SG when i was still a corporate rat. Now i live my boring life in Bali doing walks in nature and chillin w dogs n stuff and it totally sounds lame to describe it to people but my everyday is meaningful to me!
Yes, however, that is the focal point. How did walking for 1.5 hours become a form of entertainment because you are out of options? And post-walk, what follows? Your residence and automobile are pristine, and the laundry is completed. You have traversed, engaged in revelry, undertaken audacious ventures, encountered adversity, lived transiently under a bridge and subsequently strived diligently to extricate yourself from that predicament to attain prosperity. You have pursued education, sculpted your physique, initiated and divested a business, owned a high-performance vehicle, undertaken DIY projects, honed your culinary skills, and evidently achieved every ambition. I'll even throw in becoming a paraplegic and achieving much of this in a chair, yet what comes next? I sincerely believe things have become excessively facile, and the gratification derived from accomplishing tasks has dwindled. In the past, navigating using maps and intellect and experiencing a sense of achievement or becoming immersed in a library to acquire knowledge, thereby finding the attainment of an "A" extremely fulfilling, all necessitated considerable effort. Presently, it seems feasible to execute tasks with minimal exertion; everything is at your fingertips.
@@JeanVoronkova Yes, the other things aren't needed! It's just created to make people unhappy! We need peace and love, family and well being and peace of mind!💘💘
This is why I and so many people miss the 1990s; In short I was way more social and there was just more to do in life. So yeah, the times you live in will somewhat determine boredom in life....

"Share this video with someone who needs it". 😆I guess such sharing would go up to at least with the half of the world population. I was once a corporate lawyer too and made myself believe that my contribution to the company is immeasurable and the law department would cease to exist if I quit one day. I was such a fool to believe the story I was telling to myself. The day I quit, I started the other half of my life as a yoga teacher. Thanks for sharing your insights Jean 🙏 they are of great value. ❤

I went through a period like that so i quit and did a Master degree in another city. It spiced things up for another decade or so, got into a new field, earned a bit more. But this feeling can come up again later and then not having the energy to do another career change or boost. Another challenge!
it's wonderful u had such strength and courage to do as you did! but yes, i agree, we cannot simply also keep relying on change to keep things in life "fresh" and exciting. I think together with ensuring that we regularly challenge our comfort zones we also have to cultivate that mindset of gratitude and appreciation for the simple joys of each day.
Sorry about that - we screwed up with the mike settings on this one when we were recording in the cafe! am sort of looking t adjusting how we produce these thoughtful content videos to fix that.... i know this one was bad thanks for feedback!

Yes Madam! I agree 👍 20 years ago, I left UK to African desert and am moving to Asia for children education. I am 50 years old and enjoying semi nomad desert life in Africa and Asia. From Mali Fulani Fota Toro people.
I think the first step we need to do is to acknowledge that our life is not an accident. That there is a creator God behind all these. Just like anything else on earth, humans are part of God's wonderful creation. And our meaning in life is derived from understanding why God created humans in the first place. Just like we can't ask a pencil, "hey pencil, what is the purpose of your existence". The purpose of a pencil is given by its creator - us. Humans made a pencil to write. So in short, to find FOUNDATIONAL and DEFINITIVE meaning for our lives, we have to know our creator God. I am a Christian, the very first two chapters of Genesis, which is the first book of the Bible, gives us the very essential information we need to explain human beings' existence :) I encourage all of us to read it! Incidentally, Genesis means 'the origin'! I am still working. Work is still taking a lot of time out of me. Instead of finding my work cumbersome or a chore, I actually find my work utterly meaningful and purposeful because I understand the meaning and purpose of 'work' within the grand narrative of what it means to be a human. God has given me wonderful talents and giftings to contribute to the world, to serving my fellow human beings and making a difference in the world we live in. What an awesome privilege to be a human!
Love your perspective on things. I think we can all arrive at our own interpretation of what’s meaning in our lives and what we live for, the important thing is that we feel that sense of purpose and fulfilment and live each day fully 🤗
I"m booooored booored boooored. And respite only comes at 7pm Saturdays (sometimes don't have!) 😣😣😣😜0:51 I'm sure you can't be feeling this way now, perhaps when you were working. I see you have so many passions and even producing videos like yours takes a lot of time and thoughts into the topics. Too busy to be bored.
haha you so funny hur!!! and ya we have been taking a break quite often sibeh paiseh!!! but then i tell myself that if we wanna run the long race then we must pace mah... haha... ya this vid was a throwback to my SG corporate rat race times. But its a very important message I wanted to put out there. I was also feeling trapped by that boring life routine cos the 9-5 really locks you into a way of life that offers very little options with the scattered bits of free time that we have and the exhaustion you feel after work. One of the best things i did back in the day was signing up for oil painting classes at Studio Miu every Sunday morning at 9am at Takashimaya. It was exhausting to get there from Pasir Ris by 9am cos usually i work Sats too in the office. But that 3 hours class every Sunday morning made so much difference in my mental state. i hope this vid makes a difference to all those still in the race lah hehe. Obviously not you, savvy Mr Terubong! you're too busy having fun enjoying the food!

interesting u drew separation lines based off culture and origins! but i was a bored young adult once upon a time back in Singapore.... which i suppose is also a bit of a mix between Western and Asian culture & society perhaps...
Jean, aren't you on your phone a lot as well? I have noticed that the very people who say that we are online too much, are also online a LOT! Add up the hours. We all are online so much and much more than we claim to be or than we admit to being.
haha Hi Abbie, i can honestly say that i'm probably much less on the iphone than most people, even though that may surprise you. I'm pretty much dead on social media like FB and Insta - i only post on YT our videos, plus on Insta very occasionally as an offshoot from the YT. And i batch reply YT comments on the laptop. Otherwise i dont do SM, scrolling or otherwise. Tik Tok is over my dead body i hate that flashing short form content cos i feel it messes with my ability to focus. So mainly its mornings i read the news. Then I keep in touch w my family n close buddies via msgs. And sometimes i paint from photos on my iphone. That's about it. That's also why i use a very old model phone haha. V is the tech god in my life so i can live in my introverted antiquated ways.
Spending time on social media is truly a waste of time. I'd rather do Buddhist meditation or study Buddhist scriptures. I'd rather watch deep and meaningful movies which can open my mind. I stay away from things like facebook (which steals our info anyway) nowadays. I'd rather meet people in person. I'd rather study my inner thinking and observe my thoughts. Our worst enemy is ourselves.
love that your thoughts echo a lot of mine (at the risk of sounding like i just seek out echo chambers, yes...) but yeah. I think TIk Tok is so bad for young (and old) ppl and for our concentration spans. I try to minimise even online chatting really and i'm pretty much one-way on all my social media (the occasional Insta post on Bali life, my FB is dead lol) save for the YT comments ( i try to participate in meaningful longer form discussions). I feel lucky that our life in Bali is pretty hermit and basically my introvert's heaven and i can read real books and run around minus the phone cos my hubs will take care of the tech side of things generally lol. Real life (a lot of it anyway) is happening outside of that digital screen.
@@JeanVoronkova Indeed. I mean how much time people spend on looking at the superficial life of other people on FB (many of them are looking for likes, showboating anyway). It's totally unfruitful. The ranking system in office (politics etc) is also a huge hindrance in cultivating our mind too. That's why I rather trade full time than go for a standard office job. I want my mind to be free (not in the American sense though lol).
haha we can all curate our online tastes so that its productive i think, but thank you for tuning in! I appreciate the time you have spent watching my thoughts on video - namaste!
we all have to make our own choices! but just having Netflix marathons in particular leaves me very very restless and unfulfilled!!! I know this feeling because i have succumbed to it several times! Like when Bridgerton was out haha. We create our own meaning in life with our choices of action and activities. Recently I started quick portrait sketching in the mornings and that's made me really feel accomplished even before my first 2 hours of the day has passed.
No worries it’s just creative differences, I liked the vignette effect bringing attention to the bored expression on my face - plus I’m no expert it’s just me fingers on Snapseed going crazy haha
I am a boring guy. I can find endless pleasure in reading the paper edition of the Wall Street Journal with a cup of coffee. I mean all the pages, not just the charts and financials. I am 50 years old and enjoying semi nomad desert life in Africa and Asia.
From Mali Fulani Fota Toro people.
wow! that sounds amazing! Very brave of you i must say, semi nomad desert life sounds incredible!
V astute observations
Why are you so right
aww that's nice hehe thanks Ravi
Thank u u r a brace singaporean gal proud of u
🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️💟💕💟Hello jean life is to short to be bored..Enjoy every moment with your loved ones even though you are tooo busy with your work...Everyone of us has a purpose in life..Let's just be positive in everything we do💟💕💟Take Care Always💟💕💟🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️
love your positive take on things - it's easy to say but hard to live out in practice but i'm sure you do, so thanks for the reminder to us all!
@@JeanVoronkova 👍💟🙋🙋Good morning jean have a wonderful week ahead🙋🙋💟👍Stay blessed😇😇
hope u get lots of followers in everything u do.
that's very kind Salma, i just hope the video brought a lil value to you in your thoughts.
Yes, some people seem like machines! 😊
its the consequences of urban densely populated city living!
@@JeanVoronkova It's a very productive society without time for a rest! That's good and bad!!😊
Bordom is a luxury that many around Asia do not have. This is a poison of the western culture for sure sadly.
interesting u drew separation lines based off culture and origins! but i was a bored young adult once upon a time back in Singapore.... which i suppose is also a bit of a mix between Western and Asian culture & society perhaps...
Lol. I find this funny considering she wants us to watch her channel.
Wonderful ❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
I want my mind to be free (not in the American sense though lol).
traveling again in sulawesi
definitely not boring and a great way to spend time!
@@JeanVoronkova ok nice to see you jean
RUclips is another one, but we need it to watch your videos 😂
haha we can all curate our online tastes so that its productive i think, but thank you for tuning in! I appreciate the time you have spent watching my thoughts on video - namaste!
Maybe prayer and exercise instead of social media.
sounds great!
What's your tattoo about... on your wrist in Sanskrit?
it's supposed to read vimutti! about liberation :)
agree wif u
Thanks cheers
I need someone like her
you don't need anyone, you're enough unto yourself! :) but yeah thanks haha
But isn't life meaningless? Then it's ok to waste my life away on my bed watching netflix right?
we all have to make our own choices! but just having Netflix marathons in particular leaves me very very restless and unfulfilled!!! I know this feeling because i have succumbed to it several times! Like when Bridgerton was out haha. We create our own meaning in life with our choices of action and activities. Recently I started quick portrait sketching in the mornings and that's made me really feel accomplished even before my first 2 hours of the day has passed.
Please go back to baliii
hehe i am in Bali dear Frogfoot. I just made this video from memories of how life used to be back when i was doing urban city life and jobs hehe
😍😍🤩❤
xoxo
Your bathroom faucet is so filthy. How can you live in a place like that? Please clean the room before taking pictures. It is embarassing.
it is clean, it's just not brand new and Bali is very humid and that's just life.
@@JeanVoronkova So ugly. You got to scrub it with a toothbrush and coca cola to remove the scum.
First 😄👋
hey Mr Moo moo!
Your face in the thumbnail is too highly processed. Tone it down. Too artifical.
i wish you'd smtg a lil more meaningful to contribute to this discussion, but ok!
@@JeanVoronkova I take photos as a past time. LOL. I could've been a bit harsh.
No worries it’s just creative differences, I liked the vignette effect bringing attention to the bored expression on my face - plus I’m no expert it’s just me fingers on Snapseed going crazy haha
Try to be more normal like having children.
Have children for what?
Children definitely fill in the day and give you less opportunities to be bored.
farm monkey milk. to the moon
Lol
