Came to see if anyone else thought that... 🤣👊🏼‼️
Jewish is the common theme between them
Saw a video where a Vietnam veteran bought a brand new Rolex in 1974 and shipped it home. It sat in the box with all the papers never worn. Appraised for $345k
I think I saw that too, I think it was on Antiques Roadshow. Guy was in the Navy when he got it and was downsizing. When the guy told him how much it was worth he literally laid down on the floor in disbelief, the appraiser thought he was having a heart attack 😅
I saw that, too. Antique Roadshow. I was happy for the vet.
If it was the same vet that I’m thinking of then it actually went to auction and pulled in about $1.2 million
Saw that too
I think I seen that too was one of the first submariner or oyster style Rolex’s in perfect condition with the receipt and everything
“A Rolex is your ticket home” is the phrase I believe

I've worn a gold chain for the same purpose.
To this day, that's why Shawn Ryan wears a Rolex
He's said this numerous times.
Sure that sounds good, but the real actual reason he wears it is because he likes it and he’s one of us crazy watch nuts.
I once saw a video of him, where he showed his EDC and explained why he wears Rolex..
But he said it himself @@myhandle90
AFAIK, it’s true. I’ve heard this legend before about Green Berets / SOF & their Rolexes. I think it’s in a book one of them wrote. If you ever pay attention, you’ll see many, many (dare I say most) real SOF dudes wear Rolexes. Like Shawn. I think Tu does?
@@drjones762 My dad wears one and they used to get a really fancy/super functional one after graduation. It's a dive watch that recharges itself by movement. He's had it since graduating the Q-course about 35 years ago. His wife had it rebuilt for him in that time as well.
My grandpa called it his "Anywhere in the world watch." Because he could sell it anywhere in the world and get home. He was army and in Vietnam. Miss him everyday
The idea of using a Rolex as currency while traveling is still a common theme for international travelers today. I also know ppl who use them because they’re not allowed to bring 20k in cash to whatever country they’re flying to

When I was in commercial dive school we were all told to buy a Rolex when we started making good money because if you were stranded in some foreign land you could always sell or trade your Rolex for a plane ticket. I actually ended up cashing it in on that very thing.

A lot of the pilots in Vietnam also had gold chains for the same reason.
SAC crews had gold coins in their survival kits as well as chocolate bars, prophylactics, and nylons stockings.
Yup, A gold chain would be my go-to. You can't hide a watch underneath a shirt. I guess you could, if you want to wear long sleeves 24/7. Plus you can always break a chain into smaller pieces. I guess you could do the same if you had an all gold Rolex, Just pop off a few links.

I was a Special Agent with Diplomatic Security…yes most of us wore Rolex. For that exact reason and because it was cool 😎. Actually mine is in the shop now after 35 years. Still cool, but for the money a G-Shock is the best value around.

The Milus Snow star was included in a “life barter kit” that the U.S. gave to pilots if they went down in WW2. The watch, some gold, all to try and trade what you have for safe passage. Rolex makes a lot of sense today.
Rolex will get you a plane ticket home. Look into the story of the man who was a WWII POW and ORDERED a ROLEX WHILE IMPRISONED, had them send the bill to his father in Texas, and ship the watch TO HIM IN THE GERMAN POW CAMP. This man would later become the inspiration for Hogans Hero’s and the watch WITH ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS and a LETTER FROM ROLEX, was sold at auction a few months back…
So germans wasnt so Bad as they say 😮

That's a wild story!
My brother was a GB in Viet Nam in 1965 and I remember he came home with a Rolex. I had never seen one and thought is was very cool.
I became good friends with a guy after he got back from Viet Nam. We both had been going to a local collage, we damn near looked like each other enough people thought we were brothers. It is ok by me since I never had a brother I was from Panama city and he was from Cestview Fl. I asked Bill one day what kind of watch he had on? A Nice Rolex dive watch which had a trident on the band best I remember?. Where you get that? The Seal Teams. Back then no one even really knew much about those guys like today. So, I guess the story checks out that he was given that Rolex. Bill B was just a great guy had a couple pieces of shrapnel in his rear. Is all the damage he got in Viet Nam only to be killed in a plane crash, One night. Wish he was still with us.

SAS troops in Iraq had gold coins ( Kruger rands I believe) stitched into their uniform..... there is a well known incident Bravo 2 Zero recon unit searching for the scud missiles being fired at Israel....had several contacts with the Iraqi forces, one contact caused two guys to be separated from the unit. two quickly became one as one was discovered and captured.
Being alone and no chance of finding the others the decision to head for Syria was the only option.
8 days later and several enemy dead Chris Ryan was close to death form exhaustion and dehydration and stumbled on a settlement and hoped it was in Syria, to get help and avoid being taken he produced a solid gold coin to bribe the local man.....he tried to make a deal that he would get another coin when help came, he said it got a little sketchy when the man was insisting on a second coin to make earrings for his wife..
So wether it's a gold coin or a Rolex the idea is the same
That whole story has been shown to be B.S. A fantasy to sell a book. The real story is far less dramatic. And not even a little bit heroic.
From the fiction based section aka it never happened

He probably would have paid closer to $120 given them prices of Rolex's at the PX back then. They can still sell for good money though
Actually the Daytona in Kill Bill was fake. The bezel was even upside down 😂 🙃
Submariner and Daytona are two different Rolex, but the Daytona is fire. Daytona Panda.

Antiques Road Show, old Vietnam Vet bought a brand new Rolex from the PX in 1967's for like $700, NEVER took it out of the box, had all paperwork and certificates, had it appraised and come to find it it was a very rare low volume model, I don't remember the value but the dude almost past out, I want to say it was $200K-$500K. Rolex definitely has the name recognition but honestly there is better watches for less. Navy Seals are famous for being watch lovers too and some of the watches I have seen Seals wearing are big money too!
He had an OG Daytona with all papers and receipts, love that episode
I saw that one. It was crazy
SAS and SBS have Omega special editions issued to both back in the 2000's. Omega SMP were presented to SAS Planet Ocean to SBS.
Breitling and Rolex have also made watches for them too

My old man was in the teams and wore a submariner or gmt master on every one of his deployments. Definitely a thing.
"Submariner daytona" is like double clutching and granny shifting
That actually makes sense. I've read several biographies of SOF veterans who said they always had American 100 bills with them because they are recognized and used by people every where.

I taught at VMI for 22 years. The class rings cadets wear are insanely big (so that they are bigger than the rings of any other military academy)and made of gold. Cadets also buy their 'combat rings' so that these can be worn while deployed. I remember telling my classes they might want to rethink that strategy bc their rings would be their ticket home if they somehow through some circumstance found themselves in some deep, remote, and incommunicado type of bullshit.
And thats why I always wore it as a GRS agent.

Watches of Espionage did a piece on this. Rolexes aren't use as a medium of exchange like this anymore. A USD $100 is a lot more portable, less traceable, and lot more liquid.
Submariner is worth $10k. And incredibly portable, not really traceable and very liquid across the world
