I decided when I retired in March 2020, that I would learn how to play the guitar. At the age of 62 and having never played any instrument in my life, I was a bit doubtful and leery that I would be able to learn how to play. In our "new norm" world we live in I immediately turned to U Tube, as face to face lessons were out of the question. I stumbled upon many different teachers and wasn't satisfied until I came across you. You have made the whole experience of learning, an exciting one. Your teaching methods are clear, precise, easy and simple. I have found myself playing for hours watching your videos, rewinding them over and over again. Best of all I am loving it and am getting better every day! I would highly recommend Shane's site to anyone who asks me. Thumbs up Shane! 👍👍 I look forward to seeing the releases of all your new teaching videos. Thanks again. Keep up the great work! Mike Babcock, Caledon Ontario.
Ditto what Mike said, retired and now 66 decided to learn how to play the guitar. Took lessons at a guitar store for a year, I've learned more in a few days watching your videos than I did taking lessons. Thank-you.
I believe it is never too late to learn. If you're retired, there's no better time to start than now. Although I started a long time ago, I didn't really get any better for years. Career, raising kids, moving multiple times...life got in the way. Having a good time with it, now. My advice is to find some other people to jam with. That will automatically force you to learn new songs and to pay attention to tempo. Most of all, have fun!
Just found your website today. Much thanks!!! 62 years old.... playing guitar since 15.... couple of teachers and NO ONE DISCUSSED the subjects of rhythm, guitar picks, etc, .... WOW !!! I immediately heard the difference with my strumming. Excellent teacher and website . Thanks.
Great lesson. I’ve been taking private lessons for a year and was never taught where to place my right arm, nor was it suggested to hold the pick between my thumb and middle fingers. I think those two tips will vastly improve my strumming. And I love your humorous, positive teaching style. Can’t wait to see more of your videos!
Shane you are a great instructor. Thankyou love that song, Used to listen to it back in the 70's on an 8 track while plowing cotton land in my 1486 International. Some songs you just love from out of thebox.
Only just found this, played for a long time but every day is a school day and always should be. Thank you very much sir, fantastic teaching. Came here as this song breaks my heart, reminding me of a very special girl who yah, broke my heart. Nevermind, onwards upwards and keep strumming 👍👍 Much love from Scotland🏴
Although I have played guitar for many years now, I still enjoy watching tutorial videos. I can honestly say; in my opinion, that you have about the best teaching method of all others. Impressive work!
A big thank you for that! Really makes my day to get a comment like yours - so glad to hear that it is working for you and very happy to have you here with us -Cheers! Shane
Terrific lesson! So much helpful information in your video. You put this in very down to earth terms. I learned more about pick holding and strumming than all other videos combined, thank you so much!!
You are a very good instructor. Thank you for understanding the difficulties and explaining so well how to strum and transition. I enjoyed it very much!
Greatly enjoyed your lesson. For a while I have this feeling I can sing this song. When I'm driving and this song comes up in the radio, I sing it out loud. Don't care who's driving next to me. Will do my best to play and sing it!
My man I'll tell you a guitar "conversation" by you is more instructional than hours of lessons and other RUclips instructional videos. Really appreciate it. Just the tips regarding the pick is worth the price of admission. 👏👏👏
This was a great lesson for me. Been playing for about 3 months now and still trying to find that clean strumming sound...love the tips on arm position, holding the pick and sweeping. I had not seen that covered as clearly in the many other hours of guitar videos I have watched. You explained the strum pattern and accents very well too. Looking forward to learning this awesome song. Thanks for taking the time to put this great video together.
Thank you! I've watched hundreds of videos from Justin, Guitar Sage, Marty... But YOU SIR? YOU ARE THE CHAMP!! P.S. - I know a good teacher..my mom was a piano soloist with the BSO, taught for 45 years, and 2 students went to Juliard! YOU ARE A GEM!! TY
Thank you Northcountry - such great feedback - really makes my day - hope you are having a ton of fun with it and my very best to you - Happy New Year! Shane
Soft loud soft loud just awesome how you reinforce and teach strumming techniques. My wife asked me what are you doing and I told her I was walking the chicken and we both burst out laughing. I get so much out of each and every one of your videos thanks for sharing your knowledge. As a beginner it's great to know there is a site such as yours to help me along.
A big thank you Paul - I absolutely appreciate your kind words and your encouragement - so happy to have you here with us. Lots more videos coming and hope you enjoy - Happy New Year! Shane
I have been playing guitar for close to 47 years now and all self-taught. Mostly country classic songs as well as Marshal tucker, Waylon, etc. I am always of the belief that no matter how long you have been playing, there is always something you can learn from another guitar player, and i love watching these types of videos to do just that! I love how you break it down and get into detail for new players about arm placement, pick holding, ect...I learned a couple tips from you today! However, i do use the 'pointy end' as well (.74 being my fav pick) I also favour 'palm muting' with some songs. Would be interesting to see your take on teaching others the style of palm-muting and how to apply that to certain songs. Also, thank you for pointing me to the Beatbuddy!! I ordered one and cant wait to get it. ..Ive been using a programmable drum machine but the BeatBuddy sounds MUCH more professional...THANK YOU!
Thank you Alex - what a great comment to receive. So glad you enjoyed that video and I hope you'll enjoy plenty more with us here. Great suggestions you had and I've added them to the list. Congrats on your BEATBUDDY Purchase.....it's such a great device! Shane
Thank you for your videos. As a beginner this unlocked turning strumming mechanically into music for the first time. I hope you are doing well. Thanks for putting in all of this work.
My dad was a very talented guitar and fiddle player (country) now at 58 I’m trying to learn again.I have 4 guitars 2 6strings 1 12 strings and a epiphone Les Paul (Custom)electric. But I got a long long way to go. I should have listened to my dad and learned when I was a kid 🥴.thanks for the lesson.
Great lesson, entertaining and helpful. I think many instructors are too dry and almost academic in their presentations. You definitely do not have that problem! The result is an enjoyable learning moment that I will remember. Thank you for helping others.
You have color and candor when you give your lessons and that sir is priceless! so thank you very much for that.. as far as the song and your lesson goes , I can play along with the song but the problem I'm running into is my standard tuning and the actual recording does not match,
Your turning me into a better guitar player( or even one) ,.. 😏😱 who saw THAT coming lol 😂 thanks so much ! 🙏🙏 I didn’t do ALL the right things for my kids growing up but did have a piano & a guitar in the house ( both that I didn’t really play) but that instilled a musical curiosity deeply in two of my three very gifted children! They being young seemed to run with it where I have painfully inched along. I only hope one day to jam with them and at LEAST not cringe 😬🤠 you and others on RUclips have helped immensely! ✌️
shane, sir, i am very dismayed by the rudeness and disrespect in some of the comments of this vid. i love the way you handle it, like a healthy green pine tree you just brush it gently by with a zen-like response. but still. without a doubt you are the most friendly and positive guitar guy on youtube. so i just want to apologize for the sub-cretins who view free lessons as their outlet to act like a-holes. i realize it’s a minority but i do get bothered by the negativity. i have watched and benefited from a number of your videos and i really want to thank you for all you do for the part of the community that actually wants to learn, share and grow. no one can really steal your joy without you surrendering it, but this cowards den of youtube pot shotters can be an ugly place. please never let the rudeness or ignorance bring you down. for every obnoxious moron there’s a good 10 or 20 more who are really grateful for your presence here. thank you again, very sincerely. hey, are you considering offering up ‘guitar at work’ mugs for sale in the future? i’ll buy one! cheers shane. good playing!
Just found your lesson Shane, Brilliant, really learned a lot in a short space of time, subscribed as well, Happy Christmas and Happy New year from Ireland ✅👍🏼
Just kind of stumbled across you....I love your style of teaching. I struggle with strumming patterns and you have helped me a lot. Well Done! (plus, I love "Walk the Chicken"...onee and a twoee, just wasn't doing it for me)
One of the most amazing instructionals I've ever seen. That guitar sounds amazing too. Perhaps you have a video of that particular Taylor guitar and how you set up your computer etc to play along? Going to walk my chicken.
Thanks madcow - really appreciate your comment. Glad to have you here with us. I'm just plugging that guitar straight into the mixer and adding a bit of reverb and compression on mix down. The Taylor pickup system is really good I think. Cheers! Shane
Missed you Shane!! I so dig your teaching style - lots of patience and boy you can make me laugh at myself ...like you know exactly what I need -- whack soft whack soft ...but whalllahhh I'm doing it! :) :)
Thanks for the lesson most useful! Question there is a neat strum at the 16:54 mark that I didnt hear in the lesson. It sounded awesome. Anyway to teach that real quick. Thanks again!
I know you released this nearly a year ago, but I need to comment anyway. That is the best explanation of 16th note strumming ever. Now I need to go and walk the chicken. Walk the chicken, walk the chicken."

Ditto to Mike and Kevin, but 60. Great thanks to Shane.
I just started at the end of January. At the tender age of 61.

Thanks for the lesson most useful! Question there is a neat strum at the 16:54 mark that I didnt hear in the lesson. It sounded awesome. Anyway to teach that real quick.
Thanks again!
Hi I was wondering that and I think that the little addition is the pinky finger on the last strum of the D chord.
I think it is a strum down with the pinky on then back up with it off, I'm not an expert but that sounds close.
Love your channel. Thumbs up!
Thank you surf - hope you're well as can be. Cheers,
Shane
Great instruction many thanks!
Thanks Tom - very glad you enjoyed. Cheers! Shane

I know you released this nearly a year ago, but I need to comment anyway. That is the best explanation of 16th note strumming ever. Now I need to go and walk the chicken. Walk the chicken, walk the chicken."
