Anyong huseyo, I think the same thing. I want to compete more, so I do wtf. But I'm interested in exploring itf at the same time. Then possibly compete in both. Not at a high level, just a moderate level. But like how itf still trains like a martial art and not just a sport. I do enjoy wtf though. Would prefer if leg kicks were allowed.
Man this is REAL TAEKWONDO its realy effective for street fighting I mean look at all of it Technique Punching, Kicking, Joint Locking, & Throwing man thats MARTIAL ART😁
These guys their standup is amazing the boxing revolves around kicks, kicks being the primary strikes. Kicks come from strange angels thats why these guys would own everyone else in mma
You must not watch much MMA. Muay Thai and Kickboxing would pick apart their legs in that bladed stance, Boxing would easily counter their flimsy flying straight punch game and Wrestling/BJJ would catch kicks for a takedown/throw them while off balance. Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis were both lightweight champ and both knew TKD as well as Boxing, Wrestling and BJJ, but they got steamrolled by Rafael Dos Anjos with his Muay Thai/Ground and pound Wrestling.
@@abrahamm.sugondo5562 I did not start that, original poster did and compared arts in the context of MMA, I was responding to him. However I disagree that martial arts should not be compared, they are MARTIAL, and therefore they will sometimes compete and be weighed against each other, even though practicing them for tradition and fitness is also fine. I will say that more MMA champions have trained in and utilized TKD than I was aware of when I made my comment four years ago, and my example of Dos Anjos vs Henderson and Pettis was a bit skewed and ignorant of many other factors.

There is lots of similarities between kyokusinkai karate and ITF TWD. Always remember watching Andy Hugg is K1 and was convinced at first he was ITF and later found out he was kyokusinkai karate. Either way epic style of fighting. Powerful fast and if your body is not conditioned you wont last long.
I'm a teacher for ITF Taekwondo, a nursing student, been in many street fights (not really something to brag about, they aren't fun), I've competed, trained in different arts, my friends train in other arts and that is where my experience comes from.
I used to train in ITF Taekwon-do and Im the first to admit that the style has weaknesses but you can get rid of 'em by just mixing it up a little I still believe that tkd has the best all around kicks when it comes to speed and movement in general. Tkd as a style is one of the oG's if ya really wanna learn good kicking technics tkd is the way to go. You start with it and mix it up with some boxing and kickboxing and you'll become a fairly good all around figther it's really just up to you .
ITF does not originate from North Korea. ITF is the original form of Taekwon-Do and it was developed by General Choi Honh Hi who originated from South Korea. The Taekwon-Do practiced in the ITF is both good for self defense and for sporting purposes.
I like it because of the fighting aspect. It is a true way to determine what all humanity comes down to. A hand to hand fight between two opponents and the victor emerges alive. In this case just victorious. I like how we can without serious health risk improve our fighting capabilities. I used to do Taekwondo and now wrestle, and I enjoy how I can put my will against another person in a grappling match.
Lol, that's quite true. However, even in WTF, serious and good instructors will always tell you never to put your hands down. My teacher is quite adamant on this point and makes us work a lot on our guard. It helps a lot when your opponent tries dolyeo-mondolyeo...
so epic to see footage of the 1994 world champs in dprk. i went last year and i can honestly say that itf taekwondo is growing better and more professional in every passing year. TKD forever. in my humble opinion Hwang-su il is the greatest ITF fighter of all time. anyone lucky enough to see him spar as a veteran will agree he has lost none of his talent. 3rd Degree bb from south africa
@chrisgeorgegray i did not know that itf did take downs like some jiujitsu lol. generally i just think any kick above the shins is going to leave you vulnerable to being off balance and dominated in a street fight. i think tornado kick might be quite usefull. but just standing and kicking above waist leaves you to vulnerable to being off balance. jumping kicks allow you to get out of harms way. itf isnt that bad. wtf definately is. it's a big IF with that front kick though.
Ive been in WTF for many years.. in ITF for not so long. I guess I have to say ITF is more artistic, look a lot stable in stances. After I watched this clip, I gotta add its effectiveness in use of punches actually is a great advantage and more practical.
I'm In WTF, and we practice getting punched in the Face. Even though when we go to competitions we can't punch to the face, we still always practice it. He is preparing us more in the streets and than some "Competition".
"I'm In WTF, and we practice getting punched in the Face." That alone is something that should show you that you should leave that school. A martial art should do exactly the opposite: show you how not to get punched in the face.
Really good, for a comment or two below. Sparring is done with control and rules because people do not want to have children sent to the hospital. When you fight in the street you can hit with your knees, elbows, your wrist bones, your shins and very specific spots in your skull. I think an issue is that people want to pick out mcdojos but here is the issue. They don't understand why some rules are put in place. Why people don't just go full contact and beat on each other. Why belts exist? The entire concept is to learn, if I didn't train hard or know what I'm talking about is burn my belt as it would be useless to me. I have skills and I don't need to wear a belt to use them. Seek a good and real instructor, one who is dedicated to improving themselves and you as students. One who teaches new concepts in order to move forward as new methods exist. For instance we work with the insight to the MMA hype. So in order to adapt we teach grappling counters and some grapples. However, it isn't our emphasis but we do acknowledge its popularity. We can't ignore it because if we didn't adapt a little bit we could be easily taken out by a grappler.
I agree with drunkenboat84.highkick, it's easy to lose balance. when somebody throws highkick you can easily make them lose balance by counter attacking with low kick. ITF fighter could throw some low kicks too, but way they compete, they are not used to it When was last time you ever practiced low kicks?
In these tourneys are the opponents able to trip up one another with like a low leg sweep? because I'm seeing where its possible in a lot of these matches. TKO fighters seem to lunge with multiple punches getting close and throwing a few kicks some of those off balanced kicks can be swept.
Well, yes, it's a lot easier to sweep someone who is standing on one leg. No shit. Doesn't really matter what style they're doing, one leg is easier to knock over than two. 'Off-balance' is a bit of a misnomer. You can't attack without leaving yourself open in some way or another.
+joe z You make a good point. I enjoyed learning Tae Kwon Do for a good 5-6 years but left at 1st Dan black belt (couldn't afford to keep paying for new suits, belts and lessons after losing my job... bloody TAGB ripoff). I went into a lot of tournaments and though I kept a low profile, I was one of the better competitors (of course, I never got to take on Warren Vice and I'm sure he'd have tore me a new one) but I always felt I was the only person not jumping in all guns blazing like you see in this vid. It is high octane energy and as you reach Black Belt you find the competitors are more aggressive as well as more fierce with their moves. However, I felt sweeps should've been introduced as a way of showing how flawed these all out attacks were. You'd win 3 points for kick to head; 2 points for kick to gut and 1 point for punch anywhere in exposed areas above belt. You'd lose a point if you fell twice or was pushed out of the ring twice but I feel more sweeping would make the strategy more interesting plus forcing the competitors to actually practice the proper TKD stance which is designed to prevent easy sweeping (75% on the back leg and both feet sorta making an L formation). So, yeah, I'm making a long winded diatribe to basically say I agree with you.
+Ophiuchus123456789 Yeah, there's a HUGE difference in TKD that's done for tournaments and when it's taught for self defense. In ITF for self defense you use knife hand strikes, back fists, knees, elbows to go along with all of the kicks. and my instructor even teaches us hapkido to round us out with experience with throws and grapples.
dont forget that the guys stopping the kicks are also TKD master fighters, so they know how to get around the kicks too, those "roundhouse kicks" would be much more effective against someone who doesnt know about them, as they wouldnt predict the kick. So TKD IS effective in a fight, kicks and punches
Your right. Both have their own advantages, but what i think it is, is that ITF students believe that WTF made TKD into sports and they felt tkd became weak.
Keep in mind that what you're seeing here is point sparring. Continuous Point sparring, but still the goal is landing hits to accumulate points while receiving the least amount of hits. Jabs are rarely knock out blows, but if some keeps walking into them you're getting points.
Taekwondo is TODAY a sport for health, discipline, self-realisation, respect and fitness. Agreed my friend, ironically ask the majority of keyboard warrior "experts" on the sport who the best is; they will say Anderson Silva.. Who happens to get his flashy kicks from his blackbelt TKD. Along with GSP Bas Rutten and the majority of other fighters.
Using only the front leg is considered to be a defensive technique. If someone rushes in and you manage to raise your leg in time, he gets knocked out. Else, as you mentioned, you'll have to perform spins and jumps and lunges to get power into it. WTF or ITF, TKD kicks rely on momentum and strength gaining techniques like spinning, jumping, sliding and lunging for power rather than the raw power of the practitioner himself as in Karate or Muay Thai. But, that doesn't mean you stop conditioning.
Somewhere along the line, though, it's about fighting. To imply that fighting isn't a major component to the art is to remove the "martial" from the martial art. If you want to kick-breakdance and salute everyone, that's your call to make, but it's not martial arts.
