Tolarian Community College Prof does the new improved Arkhive survive the shake test? In your prior video the version 1 arkhive had it's contents fall out after being shook.
I love how the prof correctly anticipated the red deck to win in the ramunap red mirror, hes clearly a very observant player and knows his stuff when it comes to magic.
Thanks for the great Review Professor! we think the vault V 2 products are pretty special too! we spent a good long while testing and developing them! (which is why it took so long to drop them on the world!)
Probably my greatest problem with your premium-series of deckboxes, as well as your binders, is that they only come in this tacky dragon-skin surface. I'd be interested in some of your products, if only they had a sleeker, more professional look to them.
Phil M.: Certainly tastes will differ. We hear fairly regularly that people love the look and feel of the "Dragon Hide". When I made my very first product with that particular vinyl, I expected to just make a set then move into something different. But the response was strong enough that I stuck with it. The treatment done to the vinyl to make it look that way turns out to also make it much tougher and helps it wear longer withoit seeing the edges and corners fray. When I introduced the first of it's kind dragon vault to the US market, about 5 years ago now, it was such a big hit we were producing them as fast as the factory could make them up through last fall and selling through each shipment within weeks of arriving at my warehouse.
First of all, I think it's really cool that you read comments like these and even take the time to reply, that's awesome! You are absolutely correct - tastes differ, and my comment was meant to be less of a critique and more of a suggestion that there might be a potential buyership out there who is interested in the quality of your products, while not being interested in their quite extravagant look (which might be the bee's knees to others, of course). I'm happy that business is well for you guys, Cheers
LegionSupplies Once I can I will surely get a Horde+ for my modern main and a V2 vault for commanders, those look amazing. And it is interesting to know that the process for the "hide" actually makes it tougher. Win-win!
Just want to corroborate. The Boulders are amazing got 11 of them so far and I don't currently plan on buying anything else than more boulders. That deck box changed my life!
That Vault V2 design is really something because it is using orthogonal, geometric angles to support itself staying together vs. just some strong latch. One could demonstrate this through calculating the torques (moments) or the sum of the forces with a FBD, but we don't really have to do that as we can do an eye test on it. First, the side compartments require applied force primarily in the horizontal, but have a condition of motion which requires some movement in the vertical. In addition, the side components require opposite directional force to one another, which is important for rotational conditions where otherwise we would observe coupled moments of inertial with variable mass-location. Not pretty when the angular momentum gets higher. The last part of it that's really great is that the top flap covers the vertical motion of each component, but does so by use of another horizontal angle. So, in other words, the flap comes down to apply an equal-opposite force to the components upward, but does this by use a horizontal directional force orthogonal to the component trays. This is, again, critical because if it were in the same direction to the component trays it would apply wonkier rotational dynamics to the object, and the Professor would likely observe the box opening up during his tests. One might think the front flap should come undone because it is simply coming flush with the box, but it doesn't because of orthogonality. The pressure of the applied forces are being contained in other axial directions to that latching-point, if you will, and because of that, it simply is not under the same stress as other areas. Really is a fantastic design for a box, and one of the best I've seen. Source - Master's in Engineering Physics and employed Medical Physicist Assistant (still uncertified, working on it)
I don't know the exact date, but it feels like a few months back Ultimate Guard turned a corner and all their stuff has just become the best of the best. They have the Sidewinder Deck box in 80/100, and I remember seeing a really early picture of the UG Boulder and I thought it was one of the best looking boxes out there, just a really striking design. But even going down to their normal run of the mill 80/100 deck boxes, they are just the best out there. They have the best magnets and they are tough, but they have a smaller footprint than the 'Mana Symbol' Ultra Pro's that I enjoyed for a while. Now the Arkhive is a fantastic way to organize things, and combined with the Boulder it is exactly what I am looking for to store my collection. Instead of having to build a small pyramid in my backpack with sidewinders and regular upright deck boxes, I can store everything in ten Boulders inside two Arkhives and it is much easier to store, travel with, and keep organized. Accessing what is important is much easier and having multiple colors that allow for quick organization only makes it that much better. The deck boxes looking so fantastic make it a pleasure to use as well. I am not surprised to hear that these are receiving an "A" from the Professor, nor am I surprised to find out that he also is a big fan. They really are great and deserve the praise and attention. Great video.
Haha, I like how you updated your review on the Builders and Arkhive. I picked up a set after your first review of them because it's perfect for FNM and Pro Tour. I carry 2 decks, sideboards, and tokens in only 2 boulders (100+ plus size, and 60 card decks) 1 Boulder for for dice/tokens and 1 for sleeves, inner and outer PLUS that gives me a way to safely transport any cards I may pick up while out and about. I also picked up that Ultimate Guard case for the playmate with a dice tray. THANKS A BILLION! :D
That new Vault looks awesome! I needed a solid, and compact solution for carrying around two double sleeved commander decks, as my girlfriend and I both head to the LGS twice a week. Thanks Professor, this makes the decision easy!
I have been using the old Mirodin pre release box's for years for my draft sleeves / land, tokens and all my dice so when I went looking for a better option to hold my double sleeved constructed decks the 100 count boulder box's were far and above the best choice. I pick up more every time I see them in stock (no store within 1.5 hours drive has them sadly as our local game store which was still 45 minutes away by highway shut down to move on with their lives) they are awesome, the new ones still flake on the corners a bit but don't go much further than that and still look great to be honest. if you aren't trying to just be showy and fancy and have some gaudy deck box for the sake of it, and just trying to protect your cards with the best case, the boulder cases definitely are the best choice by a mile (they are pretty nice to look at as well to be fair)
The nice thing about the Boulders is that they fit into the corrensponding Flip n Tray for extra security, plus you'll also have the dice tray space as well
As someone with a growing collection of commander decks (working on building #12 now) and who wants a variety of different deck boxes to make it easier to know which is which your deck box reviews are always super helpful. Will differently pick up a Boulder or 2 when I go to finish my next commander since I order through CardKingdom anyway. Thank you.
I picked up a boulder upon your prior recommendation and have been so pleased with it! Such a comfy and convenient size, and I know my deck will be safe in my bag throughout the day. Cheers Prof.
I bought myself an Ultimate Guard box last year and did not have great results. This original box's glue gave way only minutes after taking it out of the box, peeling like a banana. I contacted Ultimate Guard and they sent me a replacement. The trays in the replacement were warped, crushed, and the felt interior was all torn up. The problems continued with similar ungluing (pun unintended) continued with replacement 3 and 4. I was told be the head office in Germany all this was due to terrible quality control from their New York distributor. They ended up sending me two replacement boxes and a couple of zipfolios for my troubles. Great customer service, but I'm still a little but unsure about purchasing anything other than their binder, which are amazing.
Good job on the great quality. Easy for a beginner for me to understand. I've only just started building my collection last week and have been really enjoying your content.
Locks on the Kakapopo boxes are mainly for securing the latch so it doesn't open in case it gets caught in something. I have the same thing on my guitarcase and it's a nice feature.
My friend gave me a boulder as a gift about a month or two ago and i love it, i took it to a large event and everyone kept asking me what is that and where i got it! Probably one of the best deck boxes ive ever had the pleasure of owning.
Thanks so much for your reviews and videos as a resource to check out over time. You get an A+ rating from me. As a father of a 5 year old boy excited about Pokémon, your videos on Pokémon and sets and now accessories as I buy non magic themed stuff like mats deck boxes 4 pocket binders etc for my son to play have been invaluable. I purchased a rayquaza vs keldeo deck as well as an intro learn to play sun and moon starter and he played two full games this weekend with proper rules and was super excited about it and asked me the next morning to play again. I really thought those boulder deck boxes were looking good and have become really impressed with the German company ultimate guard. Thanks again. Seeing you endorse the boulders gives me confidence that the color and ease of open and close my son will love will match my size and quality concerns. For the price they look to be something we will collect matching colours to Pokémon energy over time. The legion stuff impressed me, I bought my accessories between 2006-2011 they have really improved in general since then from mats to binders to deck boxes as someone who appreciates enjoying the games more though accessories of high quality I’m happy to see such great stuff is available to introduce my son to the card game hobby.
LOVE the dragon hide! I've gotten so many compliments on my dragon hide binder, which I bought after your review. If I wasn't so attached to my monoliths, I'd be all over that deck box.
I don't think prof gets enough credit for how he has single-handedly improved the quality of MTG accessories. I've spoken to more than one vendor at large events and they talk about improvements they've made to their product and mention "Tolarian" or "prof" by name.
Wow, I was just about to order 6 of those pirate lab boxes to try and cut down on space. Really glad I decided to see if I could find a review of them first. Think I’m gonna grab those legion vaults instead now.
I know, I'm late as can be on this, but with the Vault V2, when you were holding it by the sides, you artificially prevented the fold out boxes from moving. So they didn't put any pressure on the folding lid.
I Got 8 boulders & 2 Arkhives, LOVE THEM! Keeps my 8 EDH Decks safe and secure. There was however not this many color options when I purchased my stuff, so I stuck with black & aqua boulders and white Arkhives. Would've loved orange & teal arkhives - but oh well, it's just colors, could be worse :P
I usually buy whichever boxes I stumble upon in the store (because their supply is rather small) and I have to say, I've been quite lucky with my purchases. My last three boxes were a Monolith (of which I watched your review afterwards), a boulder and one of the new legion boxes. Or maybe it's just that the store only keeps stock on high quality products :D
I love my boulders. Bought 2 and they fit perfectly in my Kakapopo A4 case. My Temur Delver modern deck and Mono-Black standard deck fit perfectly inside the boxes and I've never felt like my cards have been more secure.
I never invested in accessories for MTG, because I never knew what would be a waste of money and fall apart quickly. But, ever since I found the Professor's videos, I've started purchasing high quality boxes and sleeves for my cards. Thanks, professor!
I love my Creation Line medium Dex. It easily holds a Dragon Shield Box, tokens, sideboard, 3 D20 roll downs, and up to two Chessex D6 containers. I've had it for awhile, and my only complaint is the fixed divider. It would have been nice if they had a half circle cut on the top of the divider to allow easier access to cards stored in the smaller compartment. Still...one of the best $15.00 deck boxes I have ever owned. Small, doesnt take up tons of room on the table even when opened, and they look super nice.
I really appreciate reviews like this. I've just started building a card collection for Commander this year. It's great to know what can hold 100+ double-sleeved cards.
I purchased Ultra pro satin deck boxes for commander, multiples in fact. Although they are a good product I have since decided on the Ultimate Guard dual flip tray boxes. Owning five gives me a great way to choose all or some decks to bring out.
As a Boulder user, I must say I agree with Prof's review. It looks stunning, can store double sleeved commander deck, has compact size of a Legion iconic box and toughness of a Monolith (I think I could literally nail a painting with it). All that at a competitive price makes it my personal choice for a commander library.
Another great video! I'm definitely going to check out those Commander sized Boulders. I have 12 Commander decks and trying to get the utmost protection while still being able to easily transport them has been a cumbersome endeavor! Thank you for reviewing them!
Thank you for the information on deck boxes. I'll have to check out my LGS for some of these. Most of mine are the old Dragon Pro boxes and a few tins. Here I thought I was cutting edge when I finally upgraded to the firmer flip tops.
Man, I love Ultimate Guard. I use SideWinders for all my Double Sleeved Modern Decks. I also rock their playmat case too. People at the shop are always complimenting them. Super sweet!
Fantastic video Professor. I may need to see about those Boulders and Archives. I have an EXTENSIVE MTG collection and needing to re-organize the space into a neater way.
on 11:32 you are holding the box by the sides, therefore the force your person is exerting over the sides of the box cancels the torque exerted by the weight of the decks, thus cancelling all rotational effects on the axis that could possibly open the box. The only "true" shake test is done by throwing the deckbox in the air as you did previoslu, since then the only forces acting on the system are the internal ones (such as friction and normals) and weight.
Hi Prof! Love your videos, thanks for being so nice person. Just wanted to say that you missed that Boulder cases also fit into Flip'n'tray box (without top part of course). I use Boulders and Flip'n'trays on daily basis and this feature is great!
Very much appreciate virtually all your teaching and reviews. I am intrigued by the packaging process that leads to the statistics you report about commons, rates, mythic rates etc. How do they accomplish the assembly of the booster packs that are the root of all the statistics? While profit is always a goal for a business, they are also juggling other variables to determine what is in any given box. Have you commented on this process? It it a trade secret? Thanks for the wonderful phenomenon called Tolarian Community College.
I absolutely found this interesting; already made plans to buy them for my next round of Commander decks and as a birthday gift for a friend who recently rediscovered Magic (they really like the Amonkhet set).
I recently picked up the BCW dark brown Deck Locker LX from my gamestore. I recommend it for a future review based ona decent price (17.99 for me) good sturdy design, and the added nifty feature that the material they used shows wear, tarnish, and distressing like you might find on a pair of leather boots.
Love that you did an updated review on the boulder! I ordered some after seeing your last review and doing some research online. They will replace my previous UP Pro 100 EDH deck boxes. Huge aesthetic upgrade! And the ark hive will probably follow soon. So pleasing to look at. :D
Bought a couple of arkhives and several boulders for the collection that my son and I are building together specifically because of this video. Thank you, professor!
Just bought a couple of the boulders and i don't know if it's an issue with all colors, but the amber color 80+ size boulder still "chips." Not as dramatically as the prototypes in your previous video did, but you can still run your nail across the top and bottom of it and kind of rub the frosted look off. Looking at is closely, towards the edges of the boxes sides, you can see the seam of what looks like a film that is applied to the exteriors; however the top and bottom do not appear to have this film. So it seems the frosting is applied to the plastic, and then covered with a protective soft touch film that does its job effectively, and i just wish it was applied to all sides.
I wonder if these manufacturers know just how much of their product you sell? I buy almost all of your "A"s. Most of the time I did not even know half of this stuff was out there. Also, do YOU know how many people I have heard say "I am using these new Ultra Pro Eclipse sleeves, I saw the Professor on youtube review them."? So happy you have my back when it comes to this kind of stuff.
When you tested "the vault v2" deckbox you held it at the sides pushing them in, remember that if you push them in they cant be pushed agaist the magnet sealed end. Im thinking about buying one of those so i wonder if it does pop open if held another way. Thanks for all these informative and great videos. I watch them because i really like it when you smile and when you are happy, its the best:)) also i like the information, its great!
Legion makes good stuff. If I needed more deckboxes I'd likely buy a Vault V2. I've got a Satin Tower for my modern deck and the Dex Protector box that I can't remember the name of that holds both of my commander decks.
The only smallest nitpick of boulders; I keep my Commander in Ultrapro Mini Snaps, which fit snugly with my 100 double sleeved commander decks inside Monoliths and Satin Towers, but NOT the boulders! They are just a tiny bit too small for me.
Thanks. Been curious about the Boulders for a while. Got 15 Commander decks and growing, so space is a real issue. I think I am going to get me these and an Archive.
Its so great to see a youtuber as passionate about magic as i am about yugioh. Your videos have lead to many purchases that have not let me down at all
i was planning on getting a boulder soon for my new deck, and am so glad that the new ones are out that i don't need to worry about any of the cons in the others
As someone getting back into magic and starting to end up with too many cards to carry around in an ol' cardboard box, this helped a lot! Gonna get myself some boulder and an arkhive :D
Recently found out Ultrapro now offers a Cube product, $50CAD for a 900 holding box and sleeves. Very curious as to whether we will see this reviewed on TCC. On the one hand it sounds very handy in concept. On the other, i see most cube owners going out of their way to make their own storage; almost like its part of the cube-making process. Have considered trying it out on my next cube project, since buying sleeves for my first cube equated to ~$65 alone.
I really like ultimate guard products, I've been using there Flip N Tray for almost a year now with very little wear on the box and some sight scratching on the interior felt.
I was very excited to see your review of the Legion Supplies Vault V2, as I recently won one in an online giveaway they ran. My impression and experience with it matches your review, and I'm unreasonably proud that it is as fine quality as it is.
I love how I can look at current products on a website like CardKingdom and know that I'm still going to see your reviews on your page. Thanks again! btw, yes, I'm one of those people who will go back and watch your older stuff. It's funny to see you being excited for an old set though, like Innistrad or w/e.
As a new player, deck boxes have to be the biggest overwhelming aspect of accessories in MTG. Sleeves are easy, storage is easy. But deck boxes, it seems like there is a million of them on the market from various different prices that do various different things. Do you want to hold dice? Do you want 80 cards or 100 cards? Do you want it be small or large? How much do you want to spend? I just want a decent deck box thats fairly cheap & sturdy and it seems as though the new ultimate guard boulders are the ones I have been searching for. They're cheap, they look good, and they're sturdy. And the biggest plus is they're compact. I will be buying a couple of them. Thanks Professor!
Not like it matters, but when you were doing your shake test on the Vault V2, the position of your hands were preventing outward movement of the deck compartments, so it wouldn't have opened no matter how hard you were shaking it. Good design though, I doubt it would have opened anyway.
Ryan Christopher it's unreasonably hard to get these to pop open. The only successful way we've done it in our office is by throwing it several feet at a wall. The. The lid popped open, but the cards didn't come out. It has to do with the way the storage compartments fold in. Physics keep them there. The lid has to be all the way open to be able to get the storage sections to rotate out, otherwise they catch on the lid and stop.
LegionSupplies Wow that’s cool that you read comments like this and reply. Did you design them to do that or was it just a happy coincidence (like did you design it to be more compact) that you ran with (thankfully)
It's a sign as I was literally on Card Kingdom this morning looking at the Boulders but remembered you mentioning about the flaking issue in your previous video. TAKE MY MONEY!
I loved the idea of the boulder and I'm so glad they made it good. I so much prefer minimalist boxes that take up little space. Definitely buying at least a couple.
Hey Prof, I wanted to give a little feedback about the boulder. I bought a few of them last year, and have decided they will no longer be my go-to box. I have found that over time the plastic nubs that hold the box closed get slightly worn down and the "locking" of the box is not ideal. With multiple boxes I have been able to shake them open with 2-3 gentle shakes. They are still great boxes, but I will stick to magnet boxes such as the sidewinder.
The issue you have with the large pirate lab box's dice compartment and its "lid" kinda helps with the problem of the string being the only way to get said compartment out. Couldn't you open the lid while inside its compartment so you have something to pull it out by?
Ultimate Guard really is one of the best. I have a Monolith for my Netrunner decks and dice, but the tourney rules changed and you need to use counters in official play, so the extra space of the Monolith is going unused. The Boulder is a perfect replacement. And that price! I am very interested in picking up a couple of Boulders and maybe an Arkhive to house them too.
I have two boulders that I picked up and I absolutely love them. I know I will be buying more as I need them. Thanks for all the great content and reviews!

Shut up nerd
Nerd
Sounds like nerd shit. I love it
Can we see a professor deck collection? Maybe you could show a collection per video.
Kanin Bender I'd love to see the Professor's personal collection, with his usual set of wisecracks and quips to back up the video!
I just can't get over the name Kakapopo. In German it literally means "Poo Butt"....
I was going to write a similar comment. This name is terrible :D
In spanish it means poop poop...
Not much better really...
Same in french, "poop poop".
It reminds me of Tapu Koko
I wanted too write that too
Many Magic the Gathering players ask the question: is the Professor's desk going to be okay
Good question
That Vault V2's design is very appealing. Will definitely look into it to replace some of my older boxes.

I purchased a collection of things from cardkingdom and I was impressed :) it was really fast shipping to the UK
I know, right!?!
Now I wish I had more decks so I could get more of this perfection in card protection :D *goes and builds 4 more decks*
CimInc I will replace my commander deck boxes with boulders :D someday
Rod Jos good luck :D
I will be picking up an orange and a blue one next month, once I have my next deck it's in the post can't wait
Immediately snagged a V2 after that stress test. Thanks Prof
Love sharing these reviews to my play group's Facebook page.
+Michael Umling thanks for that!
Tolarian Community College Thank YOU! Your reviews helped me secure my beloved Reaper King EDH.
+Tolarian Community College does the legion horde plus and vault come in different colors than purple and pink
+Kraff I mean vault
I like that you look surprised that you actually (finally) caught the boxes at 0:50.
I've always liked these videos. Even though I have no time to play anymore. Great video as always though
Humans sure do enjoy devouring information, useless or no
Another great video!
I love legion, it’s all I use. They make great sleeves, boxes, playmats overall grameat conpany.
on 11:32 you are holding the box by the sides, therefore the force your person is exerting over the sides of the box cancels the torque exerted by the weight of the decks, thus cancelling all rotational effects on the axis that could possibly open the box. The only "true" shake test is done by throwing the deckbox in the air as you did previoslu, since then the only forces acting on the system are the internal ones (such as friction and normals) and weight.
Excellent reviews. My wife bought me a couple of boulders and I love them. Very strong and fits 100 double sleeved easily.
I bought a Boulder for my favorite pauper deck about a month ago, and it really is amazing! I'm going to have to look for some of these others too!
stacking Kakapopo boxes look like the infograph people
I recently picked up the BCW dark brown Deck Locker LX from my gamestore.
Thanks for the heads up on the legion Vaults. Was on the fence about getting one but will be getting one thanks to your review!
Butch Jones it's nice that the prof reviewed those sleeves but they're sold out everywhere now 😂
They've become so popular my local wal-mart sells them
When you tested "the vault v2" deckbox you held it at the sides pushing them in, remember that if you push them in they cant be pushed agaist the magnet sealed end.
14:35 *looks over to the 10mm x 10mm x 10mm metal cube on my desk*
I really have to send my thanks for all of your reviews, my collection had never been more protected.
Your videos have lead to many purchases that have not let me down at all
Thanks for this. It's ironic because I've been watching your older reviews and was hoping you'd do a more updated one. And voilà! Here it is. Lol.
i was planning on getting a boulder soon for my new deck, and am so glad that the new ones are out that i don't need to worry about any of the cons in the others
As someone getting back into magic and starting to end up with too many cards to carry around in an ol' cardboard box, this helped a lot! Gonna get myself some boulder and an arkhive :D
Something i need, with a high grade. So eclipse sleeves in Boulders is my new way to go. Thank you Professor.
@9:13
"Really easy to get in and out and a nice firm feel."
Oh. I may have been in quarantine for too long..
Awesome Alliteration yet again Prof.!
I actually write the little intro blurb LAST, and am usually so tired I get a little goofy with them.
Still Awesome, nothing but applause.
As a budding MtG player, this helped a lot in solidifying my first deck box purchase. Thanks!
My non magic playing wife says these are her favorite RUclips videos. Loves your pronunciation and delivery.
LegionSupplies
Wow that’s cool that you read comments like this and reply.
I really like the 80+ boulder, I put my two favorite commander decks in some of those cases. single sleeved in eclipse, fits like a dream
I loved the idea of the boulder and I'm so glad they made it good. I so much prefer minimalist boxes that take up little space. Definitely buying at least a couple.
love the Boulders!!! I'm switching my modern and pauper collection over now. thanks for the video.
They are still great boxes, but I will stick to magnet boxes such as the sidewinder.
as someone who doesn't really keep up with these types of products, I found this video to be super helpful!
Great review and the orange colored Arkhive looks amazing.
The ONLY place to go for mtg storage solution reviews! Well done prof, another great video. 👍
Thanks for everything you do, I've only been at it in MTG for 3 months and you've helped me out so much! Don't stop being great!!!
After the intro, I always wondered what the bloopers looked like. Was surprised when he actually included them lol!
Love hearing the Professor say KAKAPOPO @ 0:37
I need to order those new UG boxes for my store NOW. I think the locals we love them!

Pure skill bby
Looking foward to purchasing one of the revamped new color arkhive boxes!
The issue you have with the large pirate lab box's dice compartment and its "lid" kinda helps with the problem of the string being the only way to get said compartment out. Couldn't you open the lid while inside its compartment so you have something to pull it out by?
I feel like the lid in the dice container in the Pirate Labs // was an addendum when they realized the magnets we're not gonna hold it shut.
