System Shock 1994-2023 Comparison: Original vs Remaster vs Remake

- Today the remake of the classic System Shock was released. I compare the game with the floppy disk version of the original (1994), with the CD version (1994), with the Mac version (1995) and with the remaster (System Shock Enhanced Edition, 2015/2018). The Nightdive Studios remake uses the Unreal engine, while the remaster (also by Nightdive Studios) uses the KEX engine. The remake of course offers much more detail and better controls, however I don't like the art style of the mutants at all. What do you think?
About the importance of System Shock: it was the model for numerous games like Deus Ex, Bioshock, Dead Space or Prey (2017). The 1994 cyberpunk action adventure game was built on Ultima Underworld 2's engine and thus offered "real" 3D graphics compared to Doom. Warren Spector and his Looking Class crew built a game that offered different approaches, you could have a lot of action or a lot of puzzles, there were role-playing elements, a dense atmosphere and a story told primarily via emails found in the space station. This gameplay element can still be found in every other game nowadays. You could interact with the game world extensively, peek around corners, bend or crawl. That's why System Shock was also called an "immersive sim". Although it was highly praised by critics, it didn't sell very well, which may have been due to the bulky controls or a lack of marketing.

Yup. I'm definitely buying the remake. They did an incredible job! :)
Holy smokes! Floppy disk? It's been so long since I heard that term used. Anyone know how many floppy disks the game came on back then?
9!
The floppy disc version is extremely rare. CD version came out a couple months afterwards and completely replaced it for production
Thank You for making this comparison. Exactly what i was looking for.
Thank you for watching!
I’m so stoked for the SS2 remake as well. I’m about to binge the remaster and SS2 in prep for the remake my potato PC cannot run
I absolutely love the remake it is so good
System Shock 2023 is a remake done right.
Also, this video is a comparison video done right.
Thanks!
Oh fuck yes Bioshock's grandfather, can't wait to play the remake but first I have to play the og
Am I the only one who found Bioshock really boring? Maybe cus I had played System Shock 2 way before it, I wasn't scared by Bioshock at all and well... as I said... zzz
@@MrTripleXXX Bioshock's not meant to scare you. It's meant to revile you.
Very cool daddy for super cool sons (Bioshock series)
and nice comparison as always!
IM always watching
GOODLUCK TO YA
Thank you very much!🙏
Ah, another nice comparison from the guy who brought us the Wolfenstein series boss compilation!
Thank you!
@@GameIntrosFinales You're welcome! I still love that you did that, including bosses from the obscure Spear of Destiny mission packs. :D
And this System Shock remake is nothing short of gorgeous! The visuals alone are worthy of a TGA Award.
@@RoseSupreme Yeah, these games have spirit :)
@@GameIntrosFinales I pray that System Shock sees a resurgence in relevance, seeing as it inspired other games and pioneered a genre or two.
@@RoseSupreme I absolutely agree. It's a pity that the original didn't sell so well back then, just like Ultima Underworld, despite all its positive qualities. At least Nightdive Studios is already working on the remaster of System Shock 2, and I believe OtherSide Entertainment (who released the lousy Underworld Ascension) wanted to make System Shock 3.
I love the beep sound the Serv-bot makes at 4:20
Absolutely yes, i'm enjoy your comparison. 😎👍
Thanks! 🙏
This video is a masterpiece, thank you
Thank you very much! 🙏
4:26, 4:43, 4:55 now I know what bothered me when I replayed the game when enhanced edition came out. the lighting in the remaster was screwed for some reason and looked more flat and uniform without much contrast
And to think this was a predecessor for Bioshock.
the grand father of modern gaming
The grandfather of conveniently placed expositional audio logs :P
Nah I'm just kidding, they worked with the technology they had to make an immersive experience, I'd like to see anyone accuse Wolfenstein 3d of doing the same thing
"day 412, Hans Grosse has been rghreally basting my balls lately, I vander if patrholling in a tzerkal aghround zis pael of dog food is to rgheamain my fate until ze protagonist of ze story aghives and shoots me in the face viz a machine gan, beecaz zat is as deep as zis videogame getz"
i think it is more warcraft or diablo with online feature, dlc
Remaster looks like perfect shock. Remake looks like completely new game worth attention
A careful and detailed comparison!
Interestingly, citadel station in the intro of the original shows at least 5 groves!
thanks
It came out the year i was born
Same 😊 I was just under 1 month old when it released
I was 14
I was born in 1992 so I was about 2! So glad to see System Shock back in the spotlight! I remember reading about it on Wikipedia back in like 2004.
Game is not easy even on lowest difficulty.
It was too hard for me back then, it's too hard for me now, bug i can see very good atmosphere and survival horror elements in this game.
Maybe i complete it some day if i invest myself more into the game
I just finished it but I used ign guide to finish the game I only used it to figure out the objectives but everything was tough but by the mid point I was strong enough to put up a fight and beat the game
It's not mega hard either. You just gotta get used to the controls.
Anyone here from 2024
WAIT, THIS GAME CAN FIT IN A FLOPPY?
Nine floppies, actually.
The remake puzzles 😢😢😢😢😢
System Chalk....
Rebbeca... That's a man, baby! Yeah!
The irony is that in current year that would be more likely to get away with, while in the remake they go in the opposite direction and make her the most attractive character in the game lol
I'd love the remake more if... ENEMIES DIDN'T KEEP RESPAWNING WASTING MY DAMN AMMO AND HEALTHKITS!! ARGHH!
You have to reduce the security down to 0% to get them to stop respawning on that level, and on the Research level you also need to deactivate robot production. The Macro Virus enemies you need to complete that questline (jettisoning the Groves) in order for them to stop respawning (I think, I rushed through the game after that so I can't be certain)
I know for a fact that they stop respawning on medical when you reduce the security level to 0% though.
Respawns are not infinite. There are basically 3 types: 1. a pool of respawns on every level which you can exhaust. 2. story based spawns that occur at particular points in the story, but then immediately exhaust. 3. level based special mechanics that are infinite but you can find a way to shut them off (only a few of these).
And I should also note, the original game had these same spawns, so the remake did not add them, it is simply being true to the original here.
@Derekloffin Funny story, I played and commented in frustration when I was high. 😅 I have 100% it since then. Hopefully people check the comments on my comment before taking me seriously.
Original is the best!
Nah
@@G-ManfromhalflifeI got that reference 😂
shame they removed the mans voice for a womans voice
You can switch genders in the game btw, when you're starting the game
A remade shodan that doesn't look like she runs a deli in nyuu yahhkk with her shyster husband, not bad.
But I ain't buying it.
SHODAN just looked evil in the original depending on which assets you used (the original low res version, that is).
What I'd like to know is why does the hacker in the 2023 version have such buff forearms? Unless he's a bodybuilder in his spare time, he's a hacker and kind of a geek.
The hacker in the original looks way more the part, like he's forced into combat and that is what makes the experience more frightening.
Yeah, I noticed that too. Maybe it's an effect of the military grade chip he received in the intro? Something to do with increasing his muscle development and brain enhancement?
Excellent comparisons
Thank you for watching!
