I've read some reviews and most of them seem to be docking the game for the remaster being too conservative, but as someone who's never played System Shock but loves RPGs and immersive sims I take that as a big positive rather than a negative? This is exactly what people want when they ask for remakes. So many companies seem to not understand that they're remaking a game and instead do a reimagining or a reboot or make an entirely different game and slap the old name on it.

There are games that can't be faithful to the original and in most cases a reinvention suits them perfectly.
For me the Remake is a usable tool in a variety of ways, they can reinvent a game that at the time did not work for bad business decisions and create a masterpiece based on it, or simply update it to the modern era as with this system shock that the truth for its time was already a great game.

One thing to note about the pipe attack animations, in both the original and the remake: the hit scan direction is based on the particular animation used. For example: If the animation shows the pipe being swung from right to left, the scan will start on the right side of the scan area (usually the screen, though in the non full screen view it does not scan all the way out to the edge of the screen) and end on the left. When the animation goes the other way, the hit scan switches direction.

The delays and running jokes that this game was never gonna come out was all worth it in the end. The AI in this game is actually really smart. Shodan is basically always watching and enemies will do everything they can to flank you, outnunber you, outshoot you, and they'll hunt you until they find you. Shodan will even send out more enemies to deal with you. Ive noticed they even send out more enemies in the spots you frequent the most like an energy station. Shodan had like 3 or 4 enemies guarding it because she knew I kept going there to recharge my weapons. Its been a long time since Ive dealt with a game that has such a damn good AI its like always adapting to you Im having a hard time finding a game with AI similar to Shodan. It was way scarier than I was expecting ( love horror but Im a big baby and scare really easily) The grandfather of survival horror games. It’s been a great experience so far for me. While I was playing it, it brought me back to the days of playing Quake 2 on 64 before I played it on PC when I was just a kid. The atmosphere and its melancholic tones, brief sounds of what sounds like music but it’s the space station. The tight claustrophobic corridors turning in odd fashion, and the old look of what the future thought it would look like (80s-90s) esthetic walls and technology. The creatures groans and lines they’d speak to themselves. Heck, even the Mantis cyborgs felt like old Quake to me. Absolutely amazing.

Never played the original and just picked up the remake on GoG. Having played originals and "remakes" of games from years gone, I'm very impressed with the updates they've done. Worth a play imo!
Great vid showcasing everything they've done, and I particularly enjoyed hearing the difference in soundtrack. EZ sub!

I’m really excited for this to come out on PS5 later this year. I played the original when I was very young and I know for a fact I didn’t appreciate the way I would as an adult. I barely remember anything about the story since it’s been so long, and the remake looks really fun. Thanks for the video!

It's what pretty much everyone is hoping for when a remake of a classic is announced.
I miss those styles of games. Its not trying to be anything but a video game.

Masters of atmosphere and storytelling, we've missed this in video games. This game goes back to being a true title without ten million hand holding scripted events/items in order to make sure the most casual of gamers may never "feel discouraged". I missed these times in video games, glad at least one title did the remake properly as opposed to a cash grab for simps. This passion project shines as the antithesis of what CBP2077 is/was.
ant 2023 terminated. System shock will kick you in the nuts and spit robotic acid in your face, while gladly claiming your corpse for Shodan.
ON EDIT::: also the sound design now is more in line with another great game StarCraft (1998), in being more neo-noir and ambient, a welcome change.

I am so very happy with the Remake & personally felt it was damn near the epitome of the perfect remake. What Nightdive has achieved with this classic that retains everything the b original System Shock had accomplished back when it first launched in ‘94!!! Like so many other legendary titles brought to modern day development- Nightdive has perfectly lifted the soul of System Shock with total surgery-like precision they’ve removed the soul of this giant and transplanted it seamlessly into a supercharged total overhaul that has added todays quality of life standards yet retaining its original design and aesthetic appeal & given it all a new lease on life!! I love this game SO *mucking fuch* & I know I’m definitely gonna be doing a lot of play throughs of this one for years to come!

Some random information to people never playing the original or being alive back then ;) ... Nick's "Classic System Shock" on the left is a highres/upscaled version with smooth edges/vectors without showing any pixels. The original didn't look that great. The highest resolution was SVGA aka 800x600 that was only possible on a P90 and some good graphics card like a Matrox Millennium. Looking Glass / Origin System games were always very demanding to hardware ..at least if you wanted to enjoy the game in its full glory. They were Crytek from the 90s.

Id like the old music tbh. If the Hacker can flip off Security guards in the beginning then we can wander a godmachines hellscape with upbeat techno. It's the same sort of vibe to me. A bit of attitude and honestly SS1s music is iconic. The ambient is good but not System Shock.

Possibly the best video game remake of all time. To me it's either this or Resident Evil 1.
It's pretty much the same as the original, except it's got a great UI, a few additions, looks amazing, runs well even on my 200 € PC (which is something I really appreciate in a world of unoptimized and highly demanding games), and it's a blast. The only problem with it is that if you are perhaps a non-native speaker from a smaller country, and your language is not in the game (there's plenty though), you might get lost in the audio logs and never figure it out. A lot of players started playing this, and never finished, because it really doesn't hold your hand.
