  • This Tutorial is based on a 3D Print Thing construction where i expose the "Best Practice Way" from several Forum discussions on how to create robust 3D Designs in PART DESIGN , avoiding Problems with "Toplogical Naming" which can lead to unstable projects when sketching on faces of features. I am using a simple part to explain how you can worka with a master sketch , use named constraints from it , use references to sketches instead of faces etc..

    Thank you for taking the time to create this Tutorial. You have no idea how helpful and educational it is for us out here trying to do these things on our own. You are a credit to the FreeCAD program and once again wish to express my gratitude for you to take the time to create this video. THUMBS UP!

    excellent video - thank you, its great to have access to high quality instruction like this, I like that you also show what doesn't work and when you can explain why. FreeCad is an excellent tool but each of the workbench's have their own quirks, it's a real plus to have a guide that shows a well constructed workflow.

    very good instructor for a slow learner, just rewind, rewind, rewind, its all there!!! Two hours later..... so this is how to get a point from a imported stl mesh into a sketch so you can modify it using measured constraints!!!! .19 and it still works

    Great video! Very useful to learn the new features of Freecad 0.17 and how to use them.
    One thing I found out the hard way is that names (for sketches) has to be without Space in them. Otherwise you can't reference them.

    Hey! I am new to FreeCAD and have a question.
    What is the benefit of having the master sketch in its own body (Mbody)?
    Couldn't it be just the first sketch in the Part1? If I understand it correctly then you don't need shape binders and can use the master sketch directly.

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  6 лет назад +5

      There may be some benefit on multi body designs, just for clearlyness. Technically you don´t need that, but you can do it that way.
      Same with shapebinders, if you have don´t need to transfer any geometry across bodies, no need for shapebinders.

    • @IndrekL
      @IndrekL 6 лет назад +3

      Ok, now I understand, it's good idea if I wan't one master sketch for multiple bodies. Then it wouldn't make sense to put master into one of the parts.

    Excellent video ! Very interesting workflow. One question if you please, why not use the shapebinder directly to create the pad instead of duplicating it into a sketch ?
    Also, selecting all circles doesn't work to apply the equal constraint because the center points are also selected. If you select only the circles with a right to left rectangle selection intersecting them, applying equal constraint works nicely.

    This is a really good tutorial, thanks!
    I would like to know if it wouldn't be better to use the "line to vertex" in two corners with the equality constraint, to reduce the overall number of constraints and screen clutter when working on the corners at the 42:15 mark in the video.

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  3 года назад

      Brian, this may well be the fact, there is usually more than one way to achievce a construction.
      I cannot verify easily, as i do not have .17 anymore and .18 acts quite different with constraining.

    Hi, thank you for the great video - I learnt a lot from it. I hope it is okay, but I noted a couple of questions whilst watching: 1) What is the advantage of using a master sketch over a spreadsheet for named parameters? and; 2) Is it possible to use construction lines from another sketch in the same way as you used the master sketch's part lines? Many thanks!

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  6 лет назад +1

      Well #1, there is no advantage, just a difference. With a mastersketch you can directly see what is whereand how values influence your design.
      With a spreadsheet, you will probably be better when you create things that will often change values.
      #2 No, not at that time. this has been discussed a few times in the forum. This is also the reason why you would normally create a mastersketch and do not use it directly for features, so you can put in whatever you like without needs that it builds a single solid.
      Maybe a future Version of Freecad gives us this possibility.

    • @iwbnwif
      @iwbnwif 6 лет назад

      Thank you for the clear explanation.

    • @marcus3d
      @marcus3d 3 года назад

      A spreadsheet enables shorter reference names, since you don't need to include ".Constraints." for each parameter. Also, it's easier to edit spreadsheets, and you can have a spreadsheet open while you're in sketch mode, and no need to go into the master sketch. I see literally no benefits of the master sketch hack over the proper spreadsheet use.

    wow, using freeCAD 18.1, and it went haywire. Lost master sketch, I could not view it. then I deleted everything after the master sketch and will not show up anywhere. But the values are there. Tried everything but failed, had to start all over. AHHHH FreeCAD. Good video by the way.

    Thank you for the good video. At 21:22 the spoken comment doesn't quite refer to what is shown on the screen and I can't find out how to get to the next sketch003. If I create a sketch on the CountersinkPlane my circles don't constrain to the vertices of the shapebinder. I don't see dots like on the video. Could you please explain?

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  6 лет назад

      That is correct, final editing the video took the second away, when i clicked on create sketch , while still having countersink plane selected, so the sketch lies on that plane. Also it took away the second where i selected the points of the shapebinder as external reference. I qm sorry fort that mistake..no one found it before.

      Hello Ha Gei, Thank you for the tutorial. How to take the points of the shapebinder as external reference?

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  6 лет назад

      @@karthikchilamanthula2636 , make sure the sahpebinder is in same body. Then you can use external geometry icon to set the mode to select. Sometimes youmay have to switch OFF other geometry lying in front of the shapebinder and make sure you do not look to the shapebinder from the REAR side of a datukm plane. These are the pitfalls i know of..
      If still unclear..post the question in the FreeCad Forum

    Thank’s for advanced learning, it is rare and so useful .
    However, I can use a bit more of your help, if you may:
    I tried to use master sketch for an other objet and I can’t use some of the referenced dimensions : some doesn’t appear in grey after being selected and clicked on the upper ok. The first random dimension appears again or became automatically 1mm.
    The name is ok.
    I use same version as you are.
    It’s don’t look to me as an obsolete constrain issue, because I can give the same dimension by tapping it old way.
    And the most tricky thing is that some works for one use and does not for an other.
    Maybe it is the way I constructing and constraining my body sketch?
    I don’t find relatives topics in the forum.
    Pretty lost here, any idea would be much appreciated.

    Thanks! Could you explain what's the use case for datum planes?

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  5 лет назад +3

      Datum Planes allow you "mount" Sketches ( and other elements ) on planes which have a relationship to other elements and parameters that allow yout to shift, turn, yaw, roll them in space by values ...which can even be calculated or derived from tables or constrainst. Once understood they allow you to easily create very complex stuff.
      In .16 you could only shift the base of a sketch by values in the sketch properties ( which you still can do.. and meanwhiel even comfortably ) , but Datum Planes as well as datum points and lines are way more flexible

    Thank you, I learned something new (for me) with shape binders and Datum points. One question. In the past, I've exported an object without converting to a mesh. What is the benefit of converting to a mesh prior to STL export?

    • @hagei406
      @hagei406  6 лет назад +1

      You have control about the mesh creation parameters and you can view/check/modify the mesh before exporting.

    A really good tutorial but for a newby like me that speaks English as a first language it is a little confusing. Also I am using version 18.4 which may explain some of the behavior I could not follow in the video. Hopefully the following comments may assist other newbies starting out on 18.4 or later and who need really clear step by step explanations. My advice is slow down the video and watch every little step, mouse movement and screen label/text highlight in detail!
    - This is being really picky! . . but . . instead of saying "switch off" and "switch on" it might be better to say "make this object invisible" or "select the Master Sketch to make it not visible". The essential information I missed on the first viewing was that for the reference edges from the Master Sketch to be available (via the Shape Binder) in the Sketch for Part1, the Master Sketch must be set to Not Visible. Otherwise you will see ALL the edges of the Master Sketch in the Part1 Sketch but none of them will be selectable as a reference edge, even the ones added to the ShapeBinder.
    This also is true if you carry out an operation like padding or extruding the Master Sketch and then create the ShapeBinder in another Body. All the edges and surfaces added to the ShapeBinder, created by the extrude, etc, are available to select in another sketch of new Body's Shapebinder, but the Master Sketch extrude, pad, etc must be set to Not Visible.
    - Also at 10:28 the video clearly shows neither the Master or Part1 bodies as Active. At this point the ShapeBinder is created. If you do this in version 18.4 an error message pops-up saying "In order to use PartDesign you need an active Body Object in the document . . . "
    These are exactly the sort of unintended items of "mis-information" that sends a newby like me back to the FreeCad reference documents and forums for a couple of hours re-reading!

    • @energem133
      @energem133 3 года назад

      I just read the earlier comment by @Karthik Chilamanthula and understand now that making the Master Sketch not visible removes edges that coincide with and hide the edges selected in the ShapeBinder. Simple really when you start to think of lines and points in terms of layered objects . . . . . .
