    You cover some topics that a lot of other people didn't. 1 choosing Kelvin, 2 ISO range adjustment, 3 auto focus will work with other lenses other than the stock STM lense. Nice work Ray.

      Ray Ortega Hey Ray, I just thought of a question, im not sure if it's obvious or not, but you can turn the autofocus of in video aswell can't you?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      Luke Ormsby yes definitely. You can always go full manual when you want. What's nice about full manual is you can use old lenses that fit the EF mount with a cheap adapter. I've bought a couple old lenses on ebay that have been fun to play with.

    Hey Ray Ortega,
    Good overview of the camera, I have had mine since around 3-months after they were released. One thing that is a very big deal for me as a video shooter is an early version of Magic Lantern is now available that gives features such as focus peaking and an intervalometer.
    I felt the same way about the AF when I first got it, "oh my god, how will I ever live without it?" but honestly now that ML is available with focus peaking I have found that I only use it around 50% of the time but I still love it when I need it. I have found the AF helpful while on stedicam however you have to be prepared for the regular shifts of balance.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      Ryan Portsmouth thanks Ryan and yes, I would probably use the AF about the same amount as you. Steadycam is a great use case. ML is awesome and focus peaking is invaluable. I've been testing the Sony a7S and it has peaking as well as everything else Canon doesn't give us. #lame-O;)

    Excellent review Ray, I have a t5i and i´m pretty happy with it ,but i want to know if Magic Lantern could damage it.
    Regards from Uruguay

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      Lucas Cary that's a tricky one. I haven't heard of ML doing much damage if any at all but technically it could and getting it repaired would not be covered by Canon. I have it on my T2i with no issues but of course you never know. If you are out of the warranty period then you might consider it. It's really cool but I can't promise it won't cause an issue. The nice thing is that it actually loads onto an SD card and not your actual camera.

  • @JohnMRunk
    @JohnMRunk 9 лет назад +1

    Nice timing, Ray.
    I recently switched from the 60D to the 70D, and the AF system was the reason why. I'd seen some other reviews, and was a little skeptical. But the continuous AF lives up to the billing. It's not perfect, mostly depending on which lens I use, but it's pretty close.
    In short, I think this camera is a run-and-gun shooter's dream come true. When you factor in all of those times that's it's difficult to get sharp, handheld focus-like in low light, broad daylight, when following moving objects, when your attention is trained on keeping the camera still, or your vision just sucks-the continuos AF is a godsend.
    Sure, you can use monopods, viewfinders, etc. to improve your focussing, but sometimes you just need to quickly grab the shot in front of you, and the 70D AF can really save you in those situations.
    I wanted to jump on the GH4 bandwagon, I'm so enamored with the 70D's AF, that might now be tricky.
    Thanks for the great review, and if you ever have time, rookies like me would love to see additional vids on using the 70D, like getting the right white balance that you mentioned.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      ***** thanks! You're right on track, I said most of the same stuff in the write up and the scenarios you listed are pretty much when continuous AF is a great option. I did shoot some more videos with the camera when I had it so those will trickle out onto this channel. I did a settings video that I will publish. I don't think I did one specifically about white balance shift but if you are in a lighting situation where none of the color balance options are working and you can't seem to dial it in manually using Kelvin then the white balance shift can be a great go to option.
      One thing I like to do is see what the camera says is a good WB by setting it to auto, the camera usually does a good job, and then dialing that same look in via the Kelvin settings. It's easy to A/B test because they are next to each other when switching between them in the settings.
      Another handy option is a custom white balance where you take an image and use that to get a good white balance in a hard to dial in environment. Thanks again!

    • @JohnMRunk
      @JohnMRunk 9 лет назад

      Thanks, Ray. I'll have to cozy up to the WB features when I get more time. I truly appreciate the reviews and comments.

    Ray Ortega Nice overview. I've had the Canon 70D for a while and you described the camera very well.
    The question I have is setting the Rode mic up with the Canon 70D. We have to put the camera in M mode to be able to use the mic but the whole reason I liked the camera was to use it in A+ or no flash auto mode when shooting video.
    Can you offer any advice / tutorial on the setting up the Rode mic with the Canon 70D

    Hey Ray are you considering trying out the NX1? I found the af to be about as good as 70D's, but since it internally downscales 6.5k to 4k, you get wonderful video. It now has a Gamma DR mode for more dynamic range as well. Also ISO1600 shows less noise than it did on the 70D when I tried it before returning it.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      ***** I probably won't play with the NX1. I've been testing the a7S and I would leave Canon in a heartbeat for it if I had the budget. The next version should be really interesting as I'm hoping it will have the IS in the body (amazing) and internal 4K. But again, $$$$$;) Thanks for watching!

    Thank for the heads up on this upgrade. Just got my new 70D today. I will definitely appreciate the auto focus as I am filming some conference presentations and it means the subject will stay in focus. I used your video to set up the video functions on my 60D Ray. Do I assume the same recommendations would apply to both?

    Hi Ray, like always batting a Grand slam with your videos. Im just want to ask a question. In the Canon offical website says that this camera came with Wi-Fi, What we can do with that feature?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      yamil gonzalez thanks! The wifi is mostly for images. I didn't mess with it much but I think it can send pics to your phone etc., which would allow you to send them other places quickly. It would be great if you could also use it to control your camera like a remote but I don't think so. Will have to look deeper.

      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      +Jim Wells just sitting in front of two large windows. You can see them in my eyes if you pause;) Based on the gear in the description, it looks like that was the only light. I always list all my gear for each video in the description. Sometimes I use a fill light which is a little LED but this time it was just window which, if consistent, is often my favorite type of lighting.

      The 60D doesn't have continuous tracking autofocus in video. You have to hold down your back button focus to continue to track.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      nancy ferreira mejia the comment below is correct, not constant or continuous AF. You must refocus every time your subject moves. This is the big difference between the 70D and 60D. If you don't have to have it, the 60D is still the best option for the money.

    I just bought the 70D and I love the additional features to replace my 60D. But for some reason I like the body of the 60D a lot better like the grip for example has a bigger space and the wheel. In my opinion the 60D feels premium, but don't count my word for it, it's my personal preference. It's going to take me a while to get use to 70D.

    Hey Ray Ortega , great review! I plan on getting this camera and I love it's auto focus features :) I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on connecting a Zoom H5 to the 70D as well as having the right adjustments for best audio! Also connecting the Sennheiser ew112p g3 to the zoom h5 to the 70D as I cannot find any video on RUclips that does this, maybe you could be the first? :P :) Thanks and keep up the great videos!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      COOKIEMONSTER4EVER thanks! I no longer have the 70D, it was just a review unit, and I don't have an H5 (I wish). So I can't create the video but setting it up would be the same for any audio recorder. There's probably a few insights here ruclips.net/video/593L2Ravx7U/видео.html. Basically, you can connect the H5 to the 70D via the line-out of the H5 using a stereo cable and then set your 70D preamp a few notches from the bottom and adjust the H5 level until you are getting good levels inside the camera, around -12db on your peaks.
      For going into the H5, adjust your microphone pack so that when you set your H5 levels, you don't have to go past 6 on the gain dial. This should produce some nice clean audio. Thanks for watching!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      +M - LEWIN I would not say the 60D is much "worse" than the 70D in terms of quality. I doubt you'd notice any difference. The 600D and the 60D probably have the same internal parts and look the same. The 70D might be a slight bump but again hard to notice.

      Ameet Pawar Thankfully an early and reasonably stable version of Magic Lantern recently became available that allows you to to shoot with an intervalometer and I must say it has been very handy with my old corded intervalometer only being used now as a trigger for long exposure photography.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      Shelly Somerset thanks Shelly. The limit to shooting time isn't solely based on the SD card. You still need a card that is big enough like a 16GB but the camera also imposes its own time limits. On the T3i I believe the limit is 12 minutes. After 12 minutes the camera will stop recording and you need to press record again. I talk about it in this video ruclips.net/video/cpPyBH1PHbQ/видео.html

      There are a lot of good lenses but it depends on how you are going to shoot. A great overall, first lens is podhelp.me/Canon35f2ISBH because it has a large aperture, image stabilization and a nice focal length for crop sensor. But again, it depends on how you are shooting.

    Hey really pleasantly surprised to see that someone is reviewing this camera even after so long. What made you decide to do this now? Seems like GH4 is the only thing people want to yammer about these days.
    The only thing that makes me hesitant about getting this is the lousy Wifi features. I can't believe you can't start or stop video , let alone tap focus on your mobile phone. This is so important for someone working alone to do videos without anyone else to help.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      Bonecrusher27WTF I shot this quiet awhile ago but spent forever in the edit getting it down to a reasonable watch time. That said, I got it in for review twice, once after I shot this and everything was still relevant for those looking in this price range. Not really sure anyone is doing the AF as well as the 70D.
      Sucks about the wifi features but at a minimum you can get a cheap remote and that works well for start stop. That's what I use. But yes it would make sense to build into an app.

    Doesn't the A7s have continuous auto focus? That is certainly better than the Canons in terms of low light and dynamic range, especially if you run and gun. I have a 60D and have looked at several upgrades and was very impressed with the Sony despite a lifelong Canon user.

  • @kaybrown5637
    @kaybrown5637 7 лет назад

    I don't have a problem using my 70d for video, but taking photographs is a whole different issue. I have so many focusing problems with the 70d. I'm not new to photography, but I used a DSLR for the first time in 2010. I had a Pentax and had absolutely no focusing issues with both of my Pentax DSLRs. I wanted the Canon 70D because I knew it did great video, but I also heard that Nikons were better than Canon as far as creating photographs. There's always going to be the Canon vs Nikon debate for generations to come. So, I invested in a refurbished Canon 70d directly from Canon, complete with the 18-135 kit lens. And now I know why 'refurbished' means 'the camera wasn't working for someone so they sent it back, Canon tweaked it a bit but never really resolved the focusing issue'.
    I've watched several You Tube videos on how to make the fine adjustments and have read countless other websites and You Tube comments about how many others are having focusing issues. There are some people who don't have focusing issues, but many who do. My 70d is not a constant lemon regarding focusing. It's a 'hit or miss' situation many times. I just photographed an outdoor car show today, and it was a good thing I wasn't paid for it, because most of the images were blurry, despite looking alright on the monitor screen on the back of the camera. It wasn't extreme blur, but it was enough to be noticeable and look incredibly amateurish. However, I photographed a car show last August with the same problem, yet didn't have focusing issues. Maybe this time it was due to the fact that I was using an ND filter to filter out the bright sun. I don't know. Still trying to figure out this camera, though I've owned it for about a year now.

      Thanks for the feedback, Kay. Hope you have better luck with the cam! I used a Nikon for photo a long time ago and enjoyed it but I rarely do photography, almost all video. Thanks for watching.

      Bret Schaller no that is one of the downsides to this AF. I believe it's only one speed. I feel like there was an upgrade to that but it's likely that it made it into the C series not the 70D if the possibility exists at all.

      Shelly Somerset if whatever you are filming can mis a few frames then you can simply press record again as fast as possible and you won't miss much. Another solution is Magic Lantern which is a firmware you can install and it will provide the recording time you are looking for. You can look into it more and how to use it if interested. Technically it breaks your warranty if you still have one. It's widely used and well trusted. I put it on my T2i and it works well but I have to warn you just in case it caused an issue...which is likely won't;) Can save you the money of upgrading.

    If i were to buy this DSLR with just the body what lens should i get along with it as my first lens? It would have to be something that doesn't cost too much either, perhaps a 50mm lens?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  8 лет назад

      It's hard to do cheap AND good when it comes to lenses but the cheap 50mm 1.8, while not built very well, gives some nice results and gives you the large aperture. 50mm is tough on a crop sensor cause it turns it into about 80mm so you need to make sure you have enough distance to fit the subject into the frame you want. With bigger budgets, I like this as a first lens ruclips.net/video/4M57AoCZeeY/видео.html

    Hi, very good channel from which i m learning a lot. I have a couple of questions i'd like to ask. on the subject of AF, will a follow focus ring improve the AF of the 60d? • @RayOrtega

      A follow focus will make turning the focus a bit easier but you'll still be doing all the focusing yourself and will still have to be good at that. I edit on a 2011 iMac. The key will be RAM. You can edit on any MacBook Pro but the more RAM you can get into it the better.

Can't imagine what an 80D with 4k and the bigger sensor might be like. But Canon doesn't want to hurt their cinema line, so it is a long shot for this. But the 70D is still a killer camera for video. Srijith Balan not sure what Internal AF is in this case. The 70D AF is better than most cause it's new tech and can work in video mode at all times.

    Ray ... need a little more help with "pulling focus". Specifically, how do you SET UP, which AF settings, or whatever else is necessary. You showed a very nice example of actually using the touch screen to pull focus. But whenever I try that, I see very little, if any, noticeable shift in focus from one part of the frame (or object) to the other. (Obviously I am a "newbie" and need a little more help than most of your audience.) Thanks for your very straightforward videos. They are a BIG help

      +Dan Little the reason you probably see little change is that most of what you are shooting is in focus. Your aperture is probably higher especially outside plus on a tiny screen it's very hard to see what is actually in focus and what is not. If you get closer to you subject and use an aperture like 3.5 or wider (2.8, 1.8 etc) then you'll notice the change. Otherwise pulling focus has to be done manually by turning the focus ring.

      +Ray Ortega ... Ray ! You identified the problem exactly. I did what you said. Problem solved ! You da man ! But jeeeez, the relationship between Aperture, Shutter, ISO etc., can get complicated/messy sometimes. I definitely understand that using Auto, when shooting video, is close to heresy among pros like yourself: but sometimes I feel like crossing back over to the "dark side" and turning the old mode dial back to "A". But I'll resist, and stick with "M" until I get it right. Thanks again for your help.

      +Dan Little awesome! The exposure triangle is not too hard in video because one of the elements, the shutter does not get changed. So set it and leave it.
      Then use aperture and ISO to get your proper exposure.
      As far as auto goes, these cams now do a pretty great job on auto. It will still do stuff you don't want it to but overall, especially if you're going to edit the footage, it will do a great job and it's a good way to get some decent video while you are learning manual mode.
      But just keep at it, practice around the house and you'll get there. Thanks again for watching, Dan.

    How would you compare the 70D to the 77D or 80D? I see I can get the 70D and 77D for the same price, were there any changes made with the upgrade that works against them when compared to the 70D when it comes to shooting video? I'm a landscape guy, so I have my camera for that, just want something to put together lecture videos. Thanks.

      There are so many little changes that I can't keep up;) But I know there are comparison videos here on youtube so hopefully you've found some of those. All great cams

    So . . . If Wi-Fi is shut off for video, presumably you can't use Android or iOS devices to control/monitor the camera. So what, if any, is the least expensive way to monitor/control the unit separately ? Great video by the way. Well paced. Articulate. Detailed, but not too much. Comfortable, yet professional tone. It seldom gets any better that this.

      +Dan Little wow thanks Dan for the great feedback and compliments. Really helps to know what people liked about the video so I can take that into other videos. Appreciate you taking the time.
      For affordable monitoring you can use the Canon EOS software that should come with the cam. It lets you tether to a computer and use it to see the image on a big screen with some ability to control the settings as well.

    can you tell me what do you thing which is better camera for video canon70d vs gh4 ,,because i need very sharp video please answer me thank you

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад

      +Marek Duda I haven't used the Gh4 but I think you can get longer recordings and I've heard it pretty sharp. That said the auto AF is better on the 70D. So it just depends on what is most important.

    Tony - you are my hero. You're at least as good as the other Tony and certainly beat hands down the clown Jarred.

    hi
    Just wanted to ask you, is the canon 70d with 18-55stm lens good for making prank videos? So the subject would be quite far, does it have enough zoom, or should i purchase the 18-135? If the 18-55 can do the job then thats great

    • @LifeofAnwarM
      @LifeofAnwarM 9 лет назад +2

      merchant121 I think the 18-135 stm is best for your situation. It's great for short and long distance shots

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  9 лет назад +1

      merchant121 not sure about prank specifically but it has a long zoom and the 70D has an additional digital zoom as well as it has image stabilization. So probably a good choice but it's not the best in low light because of the aperture. But a wider aperture would cost a lot of money

    Lots of really nice issues covered. Appreciate the video.
    But, I have to say, the video quality of this particular review is overexposed and under saturated. Not sure why you'd use this video to display the full potential of the video. But beyond that, its a great review.
