Thanks, Carl. Focus on this cam is quite nice indeed. I agree, should have 4K at this price point but some of the other cams with 4K don't do everything this does so it's always a push and pull. Appreciate the comments!
Another great video, Ray. Thanks. I got the 80D a little while ago but appreciate your insights and will get the 28 mm lens you mentioned. Keep up the great work, Mike

Hi I really liked your video - very explanatory. I am a food vlogger and I am also contemplating buying a good camera. I have almost finalized this camera but right now my budget is limited so I have a few questions if you have time to answer me. 1. If I do not buy any lens as of now - will the video quality still be good? Do u have any video clip that you have shot without an additional lens? 2. As Indian streets are very noise so I face a lot of issues with the background noises, so how is the performance of this camera with respect to voice recording? I do have an external Mic that I can attach with it but just wanted to know how this camera fares without any additional gadgets. 3. How is the image stabilization as I have to walk while shooting and I do not want to end in shaky video. 4. How is the video quality at night or low light? 5. How is the auto-focus quick or slow? In fact I have a suggestion for you as I have been searching out a lot regarding these and few more points on this camera but no video talks to clearly about each of these in 1 single video. If you could make a video covering all these aspects - without additional lens or mic - then it would be very helpful & great.
Nice that Canon is finally catching up with the others. I do love that touch screen. My 60D was really nice to me, and hard for me to let go for my GH4. I still have my Canon lenses sitting waiting to be used. Is it me or is there no 4k in the 80D.
+Ray Ortega so true, I am saving for the adapter. I refuse to sell my Canon lenses . To much invested. You made a great video. I loved the lighting, and soft shadows .. It was great work , not to mention the detail in describing/reviewing the camera.
with all of the camera options available today it's hard to know what to choose. i have to get a camera for shooting music videos. my first choice was a used panasonic GH3 but i also see that you can get a used canon c100 for a good price and or a used 5Dmk2 but a new 80D just might be the right choice. can't figure out what to do!!
Hi. I've an 80D and on my camera in the menu, the maximum option of movie rec size is FHD 50fps. I would like to know why it isnt 60? Thanks for answering and greats from Italy!
Hi, Simone. I'm making a video about this and have already shot the footage cause I get this question often. Until then however, the answer is PAL vs NTSC. Go into your menus and in one of the wrench icons there will be an option for video format. Yours is currently selected for PAL. Switch to NTSC and you'll get the option for 60fps.
Lighting in the U.S. is 60hz and in places like Europe, the lighting tends to be 50hz. This is the reason for the different options so that you don't get flicker in your video. But if you are running at 60fps and you are getting flicker, you can also adjust the shutter speed as you see me do here ruclips.net/video/rjHft9lYYc4/видео.html if you're shooting for slow motion then most of the time you are probably outside and it won't matter. Definitely subscribe to this channel cause I will have other videos out about this soon.
Thanks. Just handheld. One key is to have a lens with image stabilization. Add slow motion to that and a smooth pan with the motion of the shot and you can get some real nice results. Thanks for watching!
At 5:35 you say you can adjust the level of the audio in Manual mode while you are recording. I asked Canon and they say you cannot do that. The view of the screen you show does not appear to be recording. ie no red light at the top RH corner of the screen. This is very important if you are recording live music or a choir - you usually don't know what the volume is going to be like before you start recording unless you have a sound test so you have to guess. If you were able to adjust the levels at the beginning of the performance it would be so much better. Otherwise you have to record on Auto and not Manual which is what I have done until now anyway.
I no longer have the camera, it was a demo unit, but I found a clip where I was testing this feature out and the audio was indeed adjustable while recording. While you are recording, press the Q (quick) button and you should find an option to adjust both the headphone and actual levels. From my recording I can hear that I was able to turn down the level while the recording was running. Let me know. I hope it works on your cam too!
Ray, thanks for your reply. I did a quick test yesterday and can confirm you are indeed correct! Naturally the camera has to be in Manual audio mode. Not only can you adjust the audio level while recording but also the headphone volume too after pressing the Q button. Both options appear on screen and are available for 10 seconds until they are automatically closed. Levels can be adjusted either by up and down arrows on the touch screen or the top dial and remain on screen for as long as adjustment is being performed. I will have to find that Canon reply to my enquiry and correct them.
Nice! Glad I wasn't giving out bad info;) Sadly this is not the first time I've found that talking to someone at Canon has led to them not knowing something they should. But glad you confirmed!
Questions: The 80D has the wifi capability on the VIDEO now which is new, 70D did only pictures right? Also what is the maximum video shooting time length on 1080?
Been shooting with a couple of 60Ds for years, and was about to buy a Sony a7S or a GH4 until I saw reviews on the 80D. Your review adds on more insights into the camera, thank you so much.
Thanks Raya. I have the 60D and still shoot it for all these videos. I would love an a7sII and will probably move to Sony next but it's hard to give up my 180 degree screen.
Wow, thanks, Holly! You're killin' it here on RUclips, congrats! Your videos look great. I'd say a little work on your audio is about all that's left. What kind of content would you like to see more of here?
For most of my Canon's I've used this one amzn.to/2RUGHMc to start and stop recording. I also made a video about it ruclips.net/video/cS-Zyy5DE1Q/видео.html
Thank you so much on this review! I found a great deal for the Canon 80D. I’m a first timer RUclipsr and I really liked your other videos. I just SUBBED, I’ll definitely look at your other videos soon once I get my Canon. Thank you!
Hi Ray, great clip. Appreciate your time. One question, can the 80d video while using the view finder (eye piece), or does it only work with the screen on. Just thinking. For those bright days where looking at the screen becomes hard to see. Thanks again Tony.
A DSLR won't use the viewfinder because it has a mirror which flips up when in video mode so just the LCD is available. In a mirrorless cam you get both.
My 80D is grey so it did not come with a hard copy manual. And right now I am too lazy to bring it out of my dry box so I content myself with watching youtube videos about how great it is. After watching this video I am still left with a question: Does the 80D still have the 12 minute video limit? Thank you.
Thanks for this video! I am wanting to get into photography and videography seriously. I was looking into a refurbished 70D but now I think I will spend the $150 more for the refurbished 80D. Thanks again!
This review was awsome, I have been thinking should I buy 70D or 80D but now I know wich one I will buy. Your review was really good, not too long and you didn't speak any nonsense.
Installing magic lantern really provided everything from zebras to an intervalometer focus peaking and even zoom during recording. And it’s on a older t5. I’m sure the 80d firmware is super awesome as well....
I think we both are in a similar boat then ... The A7R 2 was the closest one to bring me over, I know the image quality would be leaps and bounds ahead but I'm just not sure I can handle some of its quarks. All that said though, my clients are totally content with 60d image quality for wedding work, so why rock the boat.
hello, can I use the remote for video recording or its only for still picturing? please reply ASAP as I need to buy a cam with remote control for videoing Than you
Quite a few Amazon reviewers reporting camera locked up on them during video recording. Only fix is to send it in for circuit board replacement once it locks up. Wondering if this has been solved yet by Canon
I didn't have any issues but I have heard of some people having different problems with the cam. Not sure if Canon has fixed whatever is wrong but I know some people have chose to just stick with or get the 70D because it has been reliable since its release podhelp.me/70DBodyBH (affiliate link)
How do you find the face tracking on that 60D? I've got the 80D for review at the moment but thinking the 60/650D might be a quick purchase soon if I can get confident face tracking out of it for pieces to camera!
Just wondering if you might consider doing an 80D and 77D comparison for video? I have yet to see anyone do an in-depth on this comparison and with the much favorable price point of the 77D it would be to truly determine if its a true contender against the 80D - also wondering if the 77D's built in image stabilization makes any notable difference for this camera over the 80D.
I think the results would be almost the exact same. Would be hard to see any difference but I'd definitely say having built in stabilization is a nice advantage. That said I think it's digital not a stabilized sensor so it's just ok. If I were looking at a big budget difference I would take a serious look at the SL2 which I think is a hidden gem at the price...basically better internal specs than the 80D for much less podhelp.me/CanonSL2zon
Awesome review, Ray! Only question I have is this perception about .mov vs. .mp4 - Far as I've always understood it, they're both nearly identical h.264 compression flavors, with no real discernible difference. You're seeing that .mov is giving you more DR or overall image quality?
Thanks Michael! I believe the .mov in this case records the ALL-I compression vs standard or IPB which are more compressed and the bitrate is not as high as .mov which I think goes up to 90Mbps vs 60 or less in mp4 IPB. But you may be right since I didn't see much of a difference.
I keep thinking of getting something like this for a b-roll camera to my C100. But after I take on board all of the compromises on features it pushes me towards just getting a second-hand C100. It's a pity as I would like something this compact that has real video camera features.
Thanks. I'd say the 70/80D are slightly "pro-er" versions in that they have a few more external features and probably a better build quality but overall the same, great AF and image will be similar if not the same
It's a shame that you didn't also test the new 18-135 and powerzoom adapter. I bought an 80D and kit lens for still photography. Focus is instant and silent.
Yeah I wouldn't be a good person to test it cause I don't have any need for it and I don't like zooming while shooting video. But there are definitely some good reviews here that show it so make sure to check them out. Thanks for watching!
hi there..I never upgraded from my 70D...and now the 90D is out...I care mostly about 1080p footage...what do you about the 90D? With so many good second hand 80D cameras for sale at a good price (as little as $900 CDN or 650 US) near me, I'm wondering if I should go for a Canon 80D instead...I know is a 3 year old camera, but I have lots of Canon lenses...sorry to drop this question on you...anyone? Im a bit discouraged to read/see preliminary reviews about the 90D and while a "better" camera, its 4k seems to be of lower quality than the Sony cameras and no 24fps and no AF in 120fps- but for video I usually shoot 30fps and slow mo is ok at 60fps...will I be "wasting"my money by buying a 80D in late 2019?
Thanks. I still shoot the 60D. The 80D is a decent upgrade but I don't think you'll see a dramatic difference. If you have the budget, it's nice to get 1080p 60, a little better image and great AF but as you can see you can still do plenty of great things with the 60D.
Ray Ortega Thanks for the reply Ray. Yeah, I can do a lot with my 60D but pulling focus manually is getting annoying. My subjects move around a lot and sometimes I only notice the soft shot in the edit bay. It still seems like the way to go as I need good battery life but 4K is overkill. Thanks again!
+Ray Ortega I own a 600D and don't have a budget to go for a FF camera. 80D caught my eye and apparently the AF works wonders. Can you tell me how it performs in stress situations for example live events? I shoot weddings on my 600D and would love to use a feature like AF tracking for some dynamic run and gun shots. Does the AF tracking keeps the subject in focus while I am moving the camera?
The AF is good but not perfect. You'll still lose focus once in awhile but yes it tracks while you move. It does pretty good overall but again, for a wedding I might be nervous to turn things over to auto anything when you can't redo the shot.
I think it's a fairly great camera for this price, but if you want to shoot video I would go with another camera. I am switching to Sony in a few months. Maybe a 90d will come out, so check that too.
Thanks for the review Sir, i really like how you setup for your videos... the lighting is pretty awesome!! keep it up!!!! b y the way, nice review on the 80d... from 60d to 80d, i can say, its a pretty good upgrade from me, instantly i can tell how much improvement i get in regards to recording video plus the headphone jack is what really stands out on this cam IMO... anyway, thanks again for the nice video.,...
Thanks. As far as lighting goes, you just really need one big soft source and that will handle 90% of what you are trying to do. Use a large window or an affordable large umbrella or softbox light.
Thank you very much for the advice.... I really appreciate it... Will take that and try to do it in my future work... again, thanks you very much sir... Have a nice day ahead.
Yeah the AF is a nice upgrade for sure and happy to see it creeping into the Rebel series as well. I'm not done with Canon, for sure, I'll be doing more with them on this channel
The video that followed this video shows every setting for the 80D for video ruclips.net/video/2uoqb7N3YrU/видео.html&lc this one is also really good for setting up any camera with manual settings ruclips.net/video/fYVHbBkArJA/видео.html
If continuous AF is something you want/need then yes. That's the big upgrade but you can get a 70D for that as well at a cheaper price kit.com/rayortega/youtube-starter-kit but if you also want the 108060fps then the 80D is the way to go.
Thanks for the great info... I just ordered my 80D and should have it next week. I love your videos since they are easy to listen to and understand even for someone who has less experience. Would love to see if you would recommend using my Zoom H4n as audio capture with this camera
Thanks. I don't recommend the H4n because of it's preamps, they are not as good as later models but the H4n Pro has fixed that or made it better and the same goes for the H5 amzn.to/2ncG2FE and other great recorders.
It's in the menu but if I recall it's kind of buried. Try the yellow menus if I recall. There are two different menu options for the histogram so if you find one and change it and that's not it, it's the other;)
Thanks. I haven't used the G85 but it looks like a great cam. Choose based on your needs. I think the 80D would have better continuous autofocus but with the G85 I think you get 4K and no recording time limit.
Thanks. I have it, not a big fan but it is nice to have the option. Happy to have moved to Sony, they have great flat picture profiles including Slog in their cams that are equally priced.
Thank you Ray. I was waiting to change my 60D but she's shooting so well that I decided to invest in accessories (view finder and lenses) and wait for the next model. I did wrong? Greetings from Brazil. Roberto.
Yeah really you should never use the built in mic for any audio you need to use. Scratch audio for sync is fine otherwise get the mic away from the cam
great detailed video for what i wanted to know .. and when ever i was thinking about a question you already told it next .. very clear .. thank you man
Hi Ray, thank you for the video. Can you suggest an CHEAPER alternative for battery backup for shooting 7-8 hours, apart from buying more canon batteries? some people suggest some power banks which are able to power up the camera for a long time. Any thought for 80D?
WOW. This is a great review. Really sold me on the 80d.

Yes, the 80D is built very well and is one reason to choose it over the Rebel series although those aren't bad IMO.

It's a bummer that most of the missing features (zebra, focus preaking, ....) would be easy software fixes for canon :(

Nope, no 4K. That is one of the downers of this cam. Get an adapter for your Canon lenses and use em all!;)
+Ray Ortega so true, I am saving for the adapter. I refuse to sell my Canon lenses . To much invested. You made a great video. I loved the lighting, and soft shadows .. It was great work , not to mention the detail in describing/reviewing the camera.
Great, very informative review. Very helpful and succinct!
thanks
with all of the camera options available today it's hard to know what to choose.
i have to get a camera for shooting music videos. my first choice was a used panasonic GH3 but i also see that you can get a used canon c100 for a good price and or a used 5Dmk2 but a new 80D just might be the right choice.
can't figure out what to do!!
Ray Ortega oh thank you. Great.
Do you think NTSC bring some disadvantages? The quality for example? Or the camera shott good the same
Lighting in the U.S. is 60hz and in places like Europe, the lighting tends to be 50hz.
The shot of the little girl running (2:23) looks super cinematic. Was it shot with a slider?
Bravo, Ray. I owe a chunk of my success to your tips. Always great to see your camera reviews. Have a great summer.
Wow, thanks Manuel. Enjoy your summer too!
Immediately subscribed! THANK YOU
Wow, thanks, Holly! You're killin' it here on RUclips, congrats! Your videos look great. I'd say a little work on your audio is about all that's left. What kind of content would you like to see more of here?
Hollyy!!! I'm suprised to see your coment here :D. I remember you bought it, how has it worked?
Watched tons of these types of videos and this one is the most thorough. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Dawood!
Great video Ray. Question: what remote control do you use for video on this camera?
For most of my Canon's I've used this one amzn.to/2RUGHMc to start and stop recording. I also made a video about it ruclips.net/video/cS-Zyy5DE1Q/видео.html
Thank you! @@RayOrtega
Thank you so much on this review! I found a great deal for the Canon 80D. I’m a first timer RUclipsr and I really liked your other videos. I just SUBBED, I’ll definitely look at your other videos soon once I get my Canon. Thank you!
Can you pause the recording? I dont know how to??
Great video - I purchased 80D for video and have been super happy with it's performance. Best camera ever.... I subbed ~ Cheers
Thanks!
Hi Ray, great clip. Appreciate your time. One question, can the 80d video while using the view finder (eye piece), or does it only work with the screen on. Just thinking. For those bright days where looking at the screen becomes hard to see.
Thanks again
Tony.
A DSLR won't use the viewfinder because it has a mirror which flips up when in video mode so just the LCD is available. In a mirrorless cam you get both.
thanks for your time Ray, thank you.
Best review of the Canon 80D, thumbs up
Appreciate it!
Serious, coherent and direct. Thanks
Thanks, Timothy.
This review was awsome, I have been thinking should I buy 70D or 80D but now I know wich one I will buy. Your review was really good, not too long and you didn't speak any nonsense.
Thanks!
Installing magic lantern really provided everything from zebras to an intervalometer focus peaking and even zoom during recording. And it’s on a older t5. I’m sure the 80d firmware is super awesome as well....
Don't think they have it for the 80D but cool that you're enjoying it
@@RayOrtega yea still on the fence deciding on the 80d or the m50
Fantastic Review Ray! I'm still on a six year old 60d but it's still getting the job done.
Thanks Peter! I'm still on my 60D as well;) I want to move to Sony but they just haven't made the cam I need for shooting these types of RUclips vids.
I think we both are in a similar boat then ... The A7R 2 was the closest one to bring me over, I know the image quality would be leaps and bounds ahead but I'm just not sure I can handle some of its quarks. All that said though, my clients are totally content with 60d image quality for wedding work, so why rock the boat.
hello, can I use the remote for video recording or its only for still picturing?
please reply ASAP as I need to buy a cam with remote control for videoing
Than you
Excellent review compared to the last 4 videos I've watched. Thank you for this !
Excellent review. Very informative, concise and the b-roll supports your points really nicely. Well done!
Thanks Jonathan!
Actually your video being shot on the 60D is proof of that, I hadn't watched the final bit at the time I sent the comment!
Cool. No continuous AF on the 60D like the 80D but the 60D is still a great cam
Thanks!
I heard that you can get for clean HDMI out if you turn off auto focus
Very solid, useful review - I am wondering though how you think the 70D/80D line compares to the T6i/T7i line?
Thanks. I'd say the 70/80D are slightly "pro-er" versions in that they have a few more external features and probably a better build quality but overall the same, great AF and image will be similar if not the same
Very nice review. To the point, concise, and well produced. Thank you sir
Thanks!
Wow, the DBX 286.. Been thinking how to get this into my camera audio. Working on it.
So helpful. Cheers dude. Just upgraded from 70d to 80d purely for 60fps 1080p
Hey Ray, how do you extend the shooting time past the 30 minute limit? Thanks.
Excellent review. So much easier than reading endless text. Thank you.
Just got my Canon 80D today and this was an AWESOME video. *New Sub*
Thanks!!!
hi there..I never upgraded from my 70D...and now the 90D is out...I care mostly about 1080p footage...what do you about the 90D?
Hi Ray, thanks for the great review. I'm shooting on a 60D and think its time to upgrade to the 80D. Would you? Thanks again
Thanks again!
best review and smooth guide ever i seen, great video
Thanks!
+Ray Ortega
I own a 600D and don't have a budget to go for a FF camera.
Ray Ortega It's still better than manual focus tracking during live events.
Ray, note that the link above for the replacement the Manfrotto 701 HDV Tripod is incorrect
Thanks! I wish these things would auto-update;)
Enjoyed your review so much, watched it right to the end. Thanks for highlighting its limitations too.
Thanks, glad it was helpful and really appreciate you sticking it out till the end!;)
Ray Ortega No problem Ray. Enjoying your podcasts too. A great resource.
still relevant. thanks for the effort and the sharing. thoughts on the 80D for stills shooting mostly street and portrait and landscapes? thumbs up.
I think it's a fairly great camera for this price, but if you want to shoot video I would go with another camera. I am switching to Sony in a few months. Maybe a 90d will come out, so check that too.
very nice review Ray but i have a question, which is better the canon 80d or the nikon d7500. thanks
Ray, thanks for the review. When you were doing the sound for the AF noise at @4:11 , was that the on-board mic or did you had a Rode mic attached?
Yes that was the onboard mic. Good question.
+Ray Ortega Thanks for the reply!
Hi Ray. If I were to record a tennis match on a tripod what auto focus setting would be best. I won't be moving the tripod at all.
A solid camera. Just missing a full frame sensor
missing a full frame sensor and about $2000 more;)
Thanks for the review Sir, i really like how you setup for your videos... the lighting is pretty awesome!! keep it up!!!! b y the way, nice review on the 80d... from 60d to 80d, i can say, its a pretty good upgrade from me, instantly i can tell how much improvement i get in regards to recording video plus the headphone jack is what really stands out on this cam IMO... anyway, thanks again for the nice video.,...
I so badly want to upgrade to a 70D from my 60D just for the autofocus. It's great to see that you're still working with it tho.
Yeah the AF is a nice upgrade for sure and happy to see it creeping into the Rebel series as well. I'm not done with Canon, for sure, I'll be doing more with them on this channel
Hi Ray, I was wondering do you have a video specifically showing what settings you use to make videos or manual settings for photos?
The video that followed this video shows every setting for the 80D for video ruclips.net/video/2uoqb7N3YrU/видео.html&lc this one is also really good for setting up any camera with manual settings ruclips.net/video/fYVHbBkArJA/видео.html
Running a 60d for video and photo, would the 80d be a worthwhile upgrade?
If continuous AF is something you want/need then yes. That's the big upgrade but you can get a 70D for that as well at a cheaper price kit.com/rayortega/youtube-starter-kit but if you also want the 108060fps then the 80D is the way to go.
Ray, what do you think of the audio issues? As see by both Casey Niestat and vlogger George Benson,
Thank you for putting this video out! It's exactly what I was looking for in my research!
Thanks for watching!
On this video 9:44 how you setup red, green and blLUE TO SHOW HISTOGRAM ON SCREEN?
It's in the menu but if I recall it's kind of buried. Try the yellow menus if I recall. There are two different menu options for the histogram so if you find one and change it and that's not it, it's the other;)
Great review!! But i'm still struggling between Canon 80d and Lumix G85 for filmmaking only/ Which one would u recommend? Thx!
Thanks. I haven't used the G85 but it looks like a great cam. Choose based on your needs. I think the 80D would have better continuous autofocus but with the G85 I think you get 4K and no recording time limit.
What do you think about this camera mostly for video interviews? And Close up shots of Food products?
Get the technicolor cinestyle profile so you get flatter video and then boost it in your editor later. That might help.
Roberto.
Sounds like a good choice. I still use my 60D for all my videos here on RUclips and it works great.
Built in Mic picking up that lens focusing noise sounds like a bummer?
Yeah really you should never use the built in mic for any audio you need to use. Scratch audio for sync is fine otherwise get the mic away from the cam
BEST REVEIW IVE SEEN!!! Thank you I’m getting the camera 🙃
Whoa! Thanks;)
great detailed video for what i wanted to know .. and when ever i was thinking about a question you already told it next .. very clear .. thank you man
Hi Ray, thank you for the video. Can you suggest an CHEAPER alternative for battery backup for shooting 7-8 hours, apart from buying more canon batteries? some people suggest some power banks which are able to power up the camera for a long time. Any thought for 80D?
