    I bought a used 19 LS for $9500 (20,000
    Miles) for my daughter after watching this. New LS models (2020) are being sold here in Illinois for $12,500. If i were to buy one for myself, I’s consider the Active version.

    I own a 2013 Spark I like it a lot. Yes it does not accelerate fast but it fits my needs . I’m self employed and ride my motorcycles most of the time. I use my Spark for errands and groceries I can get nine bags in the back and the few times l give someone a ride. Love the mileage I fill up once a month.

    This car is so shockingly exceeds expectations!!!! I easily get 40-47 MPGs in mixed driving... I've even hypermiled it to 51-56 MPGs, but without the ac at around 40 MPH.

    i just bought a 2021 spark 1lt and it is great. i previously drove a cobalt for 14 years. i didn't expect to buy another chevy, but the spark is the best deal in the subcompact class. too bad all car makers are phasing out small cars to make suvs and increase profits. i'm just glad i was able to buy one while they still exist.

    I have a '16 spark (later body style) that I bought new as a secondary vehicle that is easier to park than my trucks and of course better gas mileage. My other spare vehicle was a '04 focus 2.3L hatchback. I was very surprised that the spark rides better and is much quieter at highway speeds than the focus was. I get 38mpg with the ac on. Its been trouble free for 75K miles with regular maintenance. It will run at 80 mph keeping up with traffic and is very solid even when passing semis. We have used it for many family vacations and it gets us into parking spaces that other cars have to pass up. The only thing its not good at is snow. Its light and if you are on city roads I'm sure its fine but we live in the country so you don't want to be caught out in it if there is a few inches in the forecast. With rebates and negotiation I bought it new for only $14k and its a 1LT so it has cruise and the bigger screen. Some people just can't get over how small it is though and dislike it but once you have driven one for about a week you really don't notice it because it handles so well.

    I bought one of these 7 years ago and put 150,000 miles on it. It served me well with almost no issues until about 135-140k when it started having frequent issues. I'd like to switch things up with a different car but this really is the best car for me. It's cheap, good on gas, safe for it's class, and more reliable than other cars in it's class. Plus it's small, easy to park, fun to drive, and roomy enough for me and a friend to take a road trip. I've even taken this thing off road in the desert a couple of times. But buying the same car again is boring. Why can't any other car makers make something this practical? I just wish they would make a hybrid version. The Prius C is big, ugly and expensive. Plus they stopped making it.

    Your reviews are really first class. I was driving the interstate, keeping my speed down to 70mph because...just a subcompact...and got passed by a current version Spark smoothly doing 80 mph or mor. I _might_ have matched speeds to see how the little Spark was dealing with the pretty strong crosswinds that day. Amazingly, the Spark tracked perfectly straight and true for the mile or two I followed, while I was busy nimbly adjusting the steering in response to wind-induced deflections in my much longer 101.3" wheelbase subcompact. Then I backed off the throttle and let it disappear in the distance. *That minion-sized micro vehicle had no problem at interstate speeds, crosswinds or not.*
    I originally got at 2017 Spark after many drives from Los Angeles to Yosemite and seeing all the rental Sparks in the parking lots (they were 1.2L models at that, before the changeover to 1.4L). Surely crazy European tourists were renting (instead of declining) rental fleet Sparks to save a few bucks, being used to micro cars in their home countries. So eventually I rented a 1.2L generation sample and found it solid and unwavering at freeway speeds despite the narrow stance and short wheelbase. When Chevy rolled out the next-gen with a 1.4L engine and 14 more horsepower, I figured I'd have to give one a try.
    I had a 2017 stick shift for 30 months. Drove like go-kart and easily returned 38 mpg, up to 42 mpg if I mildly hyper-miled (no out of gear coasting though - just easy acceleration and reading the traffic to coast down instead of brake where possible. Traded it in after kid complaints about the small rear seat legroom, and after endless ribbing about being the last family in the world to have to actually wind the windows down.
    I only have two regrets: selling it, and not taking it on some long car trips first to see what it could do. It was surprisingly quiet at freeway speeds - not quiet like a big sedan, but not noisy like a Honda Fit. And the ride was very supple - it has a "compound crank" added to the simple torsion beam rear suspension. The tires are actually pretty low profile (sporty) but the size is not so odd-ball that there aren't around 20 other choices on Tire Rack.
    The curiously nice thing about the low-end Spark trims is that casual onlookers don't roll their eyes at you and think you must be poor; they just think you took the cheapest rental. I think if they knew I was the actual owner, they might reevaluate their opinion of my net worth. But what do you expect in a country where the roads are clogged with $60k and up "vanity" pickup trucks with every luxury option know to man on them? And nary a tool box or bale of hay to be seen? However, in urban areas its a good idea to take off the package tray so thieves can see you aren't a tourist who left laptop and luggage in the trunk.
    I have mixed feelings about loaded LT's. They are still cheaper than loaded Honda Fits, and pretty posh in a Mini sort of way, but if paying that much, why not go all-in and get the new Trailblazer?

    everyone is buying the spark for their kids and just buying them for work cars and i'm over here wanting to trade my 15 corolla s for one lol. i want the LS stock model just because everything is almost manual in it but the touch screen. i hate all the tech in this generation of vehicles but the spark is limited on the tech and that's a plus for me.

    • @MichaelWebber

      _Crank handle windows:_ ok for me on my 2017. What's the fuss? Electric windows were a big status symbol decades ago but now, who cares? The car is narrow enough to reach over to the passenger side with ease.
      _Manual door locks:_ one of them IS actually automatic (but we don't have a "remote" for it) - the driver's side automatically locks over 7 MPH. It's electric for the sole purpose of enabling the phone app to unlock it for you, if you lock yourself out. The passenger side door has a key hole, so we can open the door for a passenger before letting ourselves in, but from the driver's seat every door lock is accessible except the rear passenger side door. So the lack of remote and power locks didn't phase me a bit on my 2017.
      _Manual mirrors:_ Ok, this is the weak spot of the entire trilogy of manual inputs (windows, door locks, mirrors). I can easily adjust the driver's side mirror because I sit on that side and it is not only in-reach, I have a good angle of view for getting it right. Reaching over to the passenger side mirror stem is easy, but my angle of view changes when I lean over, so it's a trial and error process of lean, adjust, lean back, adjust again. I'm really glad I can set them once and forget them, the mirror housings keep the angle fixed, even if I manually fold the mirrors in.
      Still, if there was anything I WANTED in power, not manual, mode, it would be the mirrors.
      In terms of minimalist tech, I agree with you, and IMHO the greatest spot this shows up in the Spark is the motor itself: it's MPI, not GDI, so the valves stay clean without having to blast them with walnut shells. And, it's non-turbo, which is huge.
      I really enjoyed my 2017. I think I traded it in too early. It's Corolla-like replacement simply can't match the nimble handling of the Spark. The Spark was even more resistant to cross winds than my new subompact, which is not what I expected at all. However my new ride does get a few more MPG on long highway drives. Not that my outgoing Spark was bad - around 38.5 MPG over its life.

    I own a 2015 spark with a manual... fits perfectly in my toyhauler... the only problem I've had at 90k miles was the thermostat went out no biggie easy fix! And the washer fluid nipple broke also a quick fix... but all in all I would buy another one, no doubt.... very dependable but power sucks... will cruise at 80mph no problem down the highway

    • @MichaelWebber
      @MichaelWebber 4 года назад

      The 2015 was a 1.2L. The 2016 was supposedly a "clean slate" redesign with an increase to 1.4L. The 1.2L is rated at 84 bhp, while the slightly larger 1.4L is 98 bhp. I'm sure Chevy was ruminating how to tweak the number to 100 bhp, the magic threshold, but honesty prevailed. At least that's actual horsepower delivered to the wheels. Hence, more than my 1983 VW Rabbit GTi. There is definitely a regular driver / keep it on the boil driver point in the RPM were I could feel significantly more power kick in with my MT 2017 - around 5,000 RPM. To drive my 2017 manual transmission vigorously I would keep in in 3rd gear in 60-70mph traffic - not longer than I needed to navigate across the lanes for a different freeway from the onramp I just got on. 4th gear is definitely perky on the freeway. 5th is the economy champ, 38.5 mpg on mixed (mainly freeway) driving and up to 43 mpg on road trips taking it easy and slowing down ahead of stops rather than keeping on the accelerator and needing the brakes.

    Great review btw. I own a 17 and it's annoying that most reviews are for the older model before the redesign. BTW official 0-60 time is about 10.7 seconds, about the norm for subcompacts. However there was a software update to the CVT my car received at the dealer last year that seems to maximize the acceleration at low speeds so it's prob. closer to 10s flat.
    Hope you don't delete or take offense as a dealer, but the best value for the Spark is easily the LS model if you don't mind a barebones experience. With incentives, they can go to 11k and sometimes even less during the holidays (what I purchased mine for). You do sacrifice power locks and mirrors, but as a mostly solo driver, I don't care too much. Might at some point install some power locks down the line (they're cheap on Amazon), but otherwise, it's identical to the LT for all intents and purposes.

All I use is Shell V-Power or Valero Premium and all my cars from the newest '17 Soul w/direct injection to my '97 Toyota EL54, and '48 Chrysler Windsor love it. And my fuel mileage is superlative. Now and then I've tried regular gas and my cars act pokey, loose smoothness, and aren't ready for a demand of acceleration. As well now using premium gas since the 1980's I've never had a fuel related problem. So probably reno flames knows these things too.

      High test (Premium out here) improves the performance of some vehicles because they have adaptive anti-knock control that allows more aggressive tuning if mid-grade or high test are used. Other cars are oblivious to higher grades of gas, and still others perform worse on premium due to combustion chamber designs that assume faster flame propagation (premium tames that effect to control knock). So it's not simple. Some car makers play the game differently - for example I believe some German makers allow regular but recommend premium for best performance. And some makers in sport models mandate premium. What's fairly settled is that the extra cost of premium more than offsets the extra fuel economy. In terms of upper cylinder lubricant in V Power I'd like to learn more.

      shell dot com explains the wear reducing qualities of the Nitro + Premium fuel. I don't see the same marketing claims for the mid grade and regular, although the lower grades claim to keep intake systems as clean as anyone else and satisfy Top Tier requirements. Too bad Shell is so expensive out here, really premium priced compared to Arco and even Union 76.

      @@gibbyjones1040 Chevy counts the side curtain air bag on each side as two airbags not four. Here's the count: 2 knee airbags (driver and passenger); 2 front dashboard airbags; 2 driver and front passenger side TORSO airbags that pop out of a seam in the side of the seat; 2 rear passenger side TORSO airbags that also pop out of the seat seam IIRC. That's 8; so the curtain airbags are counted as 2 instead of as 4, even though the curtain airbags DO cover four positions (front seat driver, front seat passenger, rear seat on the driver side, rear seat on the passenger side).

    Lol. I love when car salesman talk about the backup camera being standard like they are going out of their way to protect you. IT'S THE FREAKING LAW. They HAVE to have backup cameras. They have been required for years on new cars in the USA. Don't talk to me like it's something unique to your brand.

    • @MichaelWebber
      @MichaelWebber 4 года назад

      I think adoption was voluntary and the deadline was this year, 2020. So, yeah they should be taken for granted on all cars but some waited until the last minute, while the Spark got a great, large 7" decent resolution back up camera in the 2016 redesign (which had the old 1.2L engine and 4 speed auto). What amazes me is that the Honda Fit LX has only a 5" screen, and the Jeep Renegade Sport stock backup camera is also only 5". In terms of my 2017 Spark, either Chevy got lucky or did some good wind-tunnel testing, because the backup camera never got obscured by rain drops, which the Toyota we had at the time was a rain drop magnet and the backup camera became useless after a drive in the rain until I got out of the car to wipe it off. I even tried Rain-X and it didn't help.

    Dude. The base model sells for 10 grand?! Anyone spending 16k, I dint care if its loaded to the gills.. put. The crack pipe down... slowly.
    Joking aside, yeah the only way to buy this car us heavily discounted not to exceed 10500 OTD. Manual will be more engaging and last far longer. If you really need more options, go for either a Used good car like a Corolla, or Scion... or consider a discounted Toyota iA. I nearly bought one for $13,700 new. Considered a new 10,300 OTD Spark, but cane to my senses and found a 32k mile 15 Scion XB manual for the same.
