Wow this is by far the best z cam review out there! Incredible footage! Finally something to really see the capabilities of the camera... It just makes such a huge difference when there‘s a real filmmaker and a real project behind it :) Keep up the good work!
As a fellow P4K user Z cam is very intriguing, the shape of the cam, the fact that it can connect to a phone. Black Magic has got some real competition here.
Thank you so much for the incredible review. The best one out there for the Z Cam E2-F6. Answered all my questions and gave me so much peace of mind about getting this camera.
This was a great review! I've always been intrigued by this camera, I'm not ready to pull the trigger just yet...but it is nice to see someone making a video that makes sense. Thanks for this Man!
I agree, H.265 is fine as far as storage space goes, but it is a nightmare to edit with, I never use Proxies I’m used to work directly with the original footage for better quality while editing. I don’t recommend it for professional workflows, mainly for quick turn around. Apple ProRes is the perfect codec, great image quality and very easy to edit with. It’s a solid option, greatly balanced between quality and ease of use. Greetings
These days when the shooter is the editor and the producer and the director and the colourist and sound mixer and and and then it does become a no brainer to shoot ProRes simply to make post easy. Since it's digital the slight loss in quality over less compressed formats is more than compensated by the easier workflow in post. Looks like an interesting camera shooting on CFAST 2. 0 which is a robust format. I was very surprised when you mentioned PR LT as the recording codec so I looked on their website but it indicates that its waiting for certification. ProRes came out of the days of FCP pre the blowup to FCPX and was designed to mesh into an edit ready NLE system with QT. That was a long long time ago when Apple was still at NAB .. probably a few years before Arri released the Alexa which was the first pro camera to record natively to PR and DNX HD/HR. That being said I do not recall the LT version of ProRes being considered good enough for camera recording but ideally for what we called "offline". So I am surprised Z cam does not have just plain old 422. HQ I have always felt is for mastering a final project. You don't mention audio at all and that does play a huge role in my workflow. Looking forward to seeing much more info on this product as it becomes more robust. Price wise it is pretty clear this is impressive HOWEVER I would say the full working version of the Panasonic S1H with full Netflix approval in V Log is a more compelling product albeit it is minus an ND and pro audio connections. What is becoming quite clear these days is that everything old is new again. In the 80s when people shot on film and were not comfortable editing on film everything was routinely transferred to make editing more streamlined. Now with 6 and 8K it is now obvious the camera manufacturers are using some pretty hefty compressed codecs that do not play so nicely with the usual NLE systems. So now we are starting to see people routinely transcode or use AVID to auto transcode or Resolve to "optimize" in order to have a fluid editing experience. Cue the big boys. Canon has always had the option of making proxies during the shooting of the full quality files. Not sure about the Sony or Arri folks . Of course now you have to talk about a camera almost double the price of a Z Cam. Everything old is new again.
I'd really like to see some footage that hasn't been softened with diffusion filters and older lenses and then downscaled to 1080p and compressed further by RUclips.
Nice work, the Z Cam really delivered a pleasing film-like image even in the low light of the workshop. At this point a Z Cam will be my next camera purchase.
Man, I love the codec/framerate flexibility. I don't know why more cameras don't offer h265, it really gives you added options. 6K@60fps is mindblowing at this pricepoint. 10bit h265 is underrated and can be quite adequate for most purposes if lighting conditions permit. It's so much more manageable on the backend and decoding is not really that much of an issue these days with modern GPUs and a decent NLE (ie. Resolve Studio or Edius).
Thanks for this review. I own the E2 and would like to add the F6 or S6 to the family. This really helped me get a better understanding of this product. Keep going man. Thanks.
Great video! I wish you would have shot at 24 fps, so we can really see the motion cadence and see how filmic it looks. To be honest, the footage looks nice, but not any better than what we get from the current Blackmagic cameras. The F6 still has a videoish look, and not the organic look of ARRI or RED. Thanks. UPDATE: I just checked out other footage of other F6 users on youtube and the footage does look kind of organic and natural. I'm still not wowed by the camera and see justifying getting it over Blackmagic Pocket 4K or 6K. The camera has poor brand name recognition, when most people know RED and ARRI and are finally coming around to the Blackmagic brand.
Great review, I’m digging this cam. Hoping it would pair well with my fx9. If Sony disappoints with the upcoming FF I’m debating between this or c200 but prolly this for form factor as a B cam daily cam. I think you did a great job and the talent you had really drew me in
This was amazing! I have a question though. I am very impressed with the capabilities of the Z-cam (and I intend to buy a cinema camera in the future as I primarily shoot videos), however, upon looking at the several features that the Panasonic S1H offers compared to the Z-cam, I am more inclined towards the S1H. I really don't like the DSLR-format, yet having a quick look at the specs between the cameras, it seems that the S1H offers more bang for the buck. Is this true? I would like to hear your comments and thoughts between these two cameras.
This was an awesome review! I have the F6 and I watched through this as well as your other Z-Cam videos multiple times! Keep up the awesome work! I also had a quick question, what adapters are you using for your vintage glass? Thanks!
Maybe I should take up iron work as a hobby so I can build those guns. Nice cam review. Looking at these video camera prices feels like a cold shower coming from film photography but I understand the cost.
ZCam interested me, but I decided to stick to Blackmagic Pocket... If ZCam integrated Blackmagic RAW, then that might have made a difference... But I had the Pocket 4k already, and just ordered a pocket 6k. It also have some interesting integration with Atem Mini Pro which remote camera controls... The ZCam does have remote ethernet support which would also work for me(and could maybe even offer an Atem Mini camera control integration). I guess the things that I don't understand is why the E2 doesn't have a SDI output. Everything else I wish Blackmagic made a version of the Pocket in the E2 type of body.
I ran one 98wh v-mount all day, and only lost 2 out of 5 notches on the meter on the battery (sorry, was paying attention to voltage). So yeah, very good.
Hey dude, beautiful stuff! I have a Pocket 4K, and Mavo LF. Interested in this as an alt. What Prores 422 HQ options are there framerate wise and particularly interested in the 16:9 ratio ones?
Agreed that H.265 is terrible when working with. Transcoding always makes it easier, though. ProRes 422 or 422 HQ are massive but the file sizes are nothing compared to what the final editing experience is
I really, really want the E2-f6 but i just don't have the funds :( I wish they would make a 4k full frame version at a price point between the normal e2 and the f6
Can I ask what you think about BMD products? You don't seem to use them and I am curious what made you chose the Zcam over the Pocket or the URSA Mini Pro.
Hey! Amazing camera - thinking about picking up the S6. What type of lenses did you use/do you recommend for this camera? (except cine lenses worth a car :‘) )
Hi MF - Kyle's in the UK now. Best to reach out to him on his own RUclips site (ruclips.net/channel/UCJQcBYfgescGRJUzU6IMCMw). He's pretty good about following up with people.
Debating between the F6 and the BMPCC 6K .. the only drawback I see with the F6 is the extra time and steps to use the H.265 or ZRAW in DaVinci Resolve. The BMPCC workflow with BRAW and DNxHR (Windows) is pretty appealing compared to having to convert ZRAW or H.265 before I can edit. That being said, the F6 is one seriously appealing camera.
I think a problem with cameras right now is that cameras in the 1500 - 5000$ price range are getting better than ever, so people with a mid range budget can get very high quality cameras (which clients love). But cameras in the 600$ price range don't really get better as the consumer market is focusing on 1000$ cameras. That means, while a 500$ Sony a6000 (FullHD 60) was totally fine a few years ago (Low budget: FullHD 60 fps / Mid budget: 4k 24 fps / high budget: 6k/8k) the gap is now way bigger! (Low budget: still FullHD 60 fps / Mid budget: 4k/6k 60 fps / high budget: 8k). That, for me as a student, is sad...😐
a working with ZRaw video will come as soon as it can be edited natively in Premiere - this was done with Pro Res as best quality with ZLog plugin for most editors and lots of sample H.265 footage out there not so much Pro Res - also external ProRes Raw coming as soon as Atomos Ninja V firmware comes.

Everything about this video is just phenomenal and buttery.
Sparkler - he burned his steel baaaad. It looked amazing though. Absolutely beautiful footage

cool stuff and the guy doing the metal works without protection glasses wow
Well sorta, being that he's already blind from getting hit in the eyes with red hot metal shavings, safety glasses would be pointless.
What 4k monitor is that your using for it? Im looking to purchase off this video alone.
I'd really like to see some footage that hasn't been softened with diffusion filters and older lenses and then downscaled to 1080p and compressed further by RUclips.
Most AMAZING video I've seen in a while! AMAZING cinematography! The quality of your videos is TOP NOTCH! Thank you!
So now that we know this is getting 12 bit prores raw AND it’s a thousand dollars cheaper at $3995, how do we feel?😎🖤
Nice work, the Z Cam really delivered a pleasing film-like image even in the low light of the workshop. At this point a Z Cam will be my next camera purchase.
The images from this camera is definitely quite impressive indeed 👍
Damn man! Every single shot in this review is beautiful! Great job!
Excellent video . The dynamic range is tremendous. Plus the price is not impossible to afford .
Thanks for the look at this cool camera! Beautiful footage!
That was really insightful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the zcam F6!

Fantastic review! Such an incredible image on a first go with the Z-Cam. Has anyone tried shooting with the F6 using a MFT mount and lens?
Excellent review! Thank you for all the information and footage.
Glad you like the F6. I love mine
Open and honest review

I would love to see the documentary. Is there anywhere I can watch it?
no doubt today E2 F6 is the best bang for your buck

Great informative video. Can you tell us about the battery, how it worked and how many batteries you used in whole day shoot?

I wonder how this will stack up with the Komodo once all the codecs and frame rates are finalized.
Black Magic eats it alive- and Komodo takes BlackMagic for breackfast,-
Awesome review! Any experience on ZRAW?
nice, what did you shoot the rest of the video with on the non sample footage parts with you talking on camera?
Great review! Well done!
Thank you.. could you please reconfirm lens.. Is it Zesis cp3?
how is ZRAW? is it comparable to BRAW? i'm a big fan of BRAW and that was my reason to buy the Pocket 4k...

Compare to Blackmagic pocket, which one you think better?
I’m better off buying an Ursa Mini Pro G2 for that money + a Sigma 18-35mm and some change as well. That’s crazy
Nothing wrong with the G2. Great camera as well.
Price has gone down and F6 is FF
Any idea on the current wait time for the z-cam lineup at vistek? Interested in picking up an S6.
we get cameras in every couple weeks place an order it won't take too long
Thank you for this very helpful
