Alien Isolation is good, and an achievement in lighting and design. This looks good too, i just don’t think it’s fair to even mention Alien Isolation in the same sentence because it definitely achieved what it set out to do, and its so cool to explore something so fucking accurate to the sets in the movie.
@@underthemayo that is basically what it is but i will say at the time of launch i don’t think it had much competition. It’s certainly a decent game for the time. A lot of the tension is not because of gameplay but because the game knows how to use your own fear against you. We’re all scared of the dark and creepy music but a good horror game has to be more than just that. They did try with the AI I agree that much but my biggest issue with the game was the boring puzzles and the pacing. I played the first few hours of the game and I got so bored because of the artificial scary moments and the other human AIs and bots. I’d be happy with just the alien but the game just doesn’t throw it at you enough. You cannot sustain my horror if all you’re doing is showing creepy lighting and sound effects. The best sentence would be “I’m walking in a haunted house”. Fake tension everywhere because you know they’re not gonna jump out at you. At first you might think the tension is real but after multiple hours, you find out that the encounters with the Alien is just too few. Instead the majority is just a walk in a haunted house solving boring puzzles. That is just not enough. You need to know the danger is there and the best way to do that is to see the danger. Or reduce the length of the game so that you don’t get bored halfway through. You could say the game gets more interesting like 10 hours but if I got bored 3 hours in, the game isn’t doing a good job with its pacing.

2:20 Correction, you are not taken prisoner. In an unconscious state, you are dragged to a French bunker. Since you play as a French soldier, this is just your own friendly bunker complex which has been overrun by a monster.
There really should be an alternate ending for when you trap yourself inside the cells when the generator goes out. Something like a group of soldiers, French, American, German, British, or what have you, coming across the desolate bunker, and they find Clemént's body in one of the cells, mangled and chewed on by the rats, with no idea as to what happened or why he was in the cell to begin with.
I'm sold in the first minute. No awkward jumpscare, just tension, pure tension. Edit: I recommend Fear & Hunger, it's been making the rounds on the algorithm, and it's definitely earned. It's an RPG maker-type title, so temper your expectations for visuals, but it has the same philosophies as this. I've known about it for a while, but seeing as it's gaining popularity. Why not give it some good vibes, so the lone Dev that's doing its sequel can get even more motivation.
Fear & Hunger was something, even though it has - as you mentioned - nothing much on the visual front going for it, that disturbed me deeply. I remember going into the game, having beeing a RPG player for ages.. and there was a NPC that told me to follow him, just around the corner, he something to show me. Conditioned as I was I did that. Well..it was not pleasent. Busts, anyone? :/
God im so happy its getting appreciated here, the bunker is a modern survival horror gem. The hub and stalker concept is just brilliant (and terrifying). I love the dark descent probably more overall, but the bunker is far more resident evil in the backtracking resource management sense, and it makes me giddy that 2020's horror is once again turning to exploration (metroidvania style), puzzles and guns with limited ammo as its language
This game looks like it has elements from Resident Evil 1 Remake (burning corpses), Dishonored (rats attracted to corpses attracting enemies), Alone in the Dark 2008 (inventory management and emphasis on dumping gasoline and fire as a tool, using rats strategically), and obviously Alien Isolation (unscripted omnipresent monster with advanced AI that can kill you at any moment). It also seems to use a similar mechanic from the Penumbra series which had these hallways that were safe in the light and dangerous in the dark, requiring you to block holes in the walls before turning off the lights in order to progress or else you get instakilled. Honestly a lot of great games and great inspirations to take from. I can't wait to try it out in 6 hours.
You know you're in for something special when the first obstacle in an AMNESIA game is to get into a gunfight with 3 normal dudes. Sets the tone perfectly.
@@underthemayo last I knew most people had liked alien isolation (most complains are about being too long...), I just don't think this will do the video or the Game a favor.
It is a very engaging horror game, I especially liked how some areas have either no tables to hide under or just some wooden tables which have a 60% chance of being destroyed by the monster. It was just enough to be a constant worry in the back of your mind, always thinking: if the monster comes, where the fuck was that metal table? I beat most of the game without the generator on because I just didn't know how much fuel was actually available. Turns out I was right, fuel was scarce, and some tasks require the generator to be on, so if you use it all, you're gonna be filling a lot of empty bottles with a piddle of gas in each (you'll find out).
Thanks for the recommendation! Completed the game in one sitting and it was a blast. I'd say this was the best survival horror experience for me gameplaywise, the tension and immersion are immense. And the length is optimal, just when I started feeling really confident and almost fearless the game was close to the ending. One or two hours longer and the final impression would have been a bit worse. Bunker for gameplay and Signalis for atmosphere, mood and plot are my two survival horror pillars now for a long time. If someone manages to combine both strengths in one game (if that is at all possible) that would be a masterpiece above and beyond.
Im a big fan of adventure games, and i liked to play survivor horrors and p&c horror games when i was younger. I played all the Penumbra games back in 2009 and Amnesia TDD and MFP. I think a viable strategy for using weapons in these games, is to first memorize the new locations you discover by being stealthy, avoiding the monster at first, but then if need be use the weapon if you are close to progress and figured out what to do next and where to go, not wondering arround. The worst thing you can do is to waste all the weapons if you end up in a jam, unable to figure out some puzzle or a problem and you are exploring. So explore first, and then when the locations are clear, and your objectives, nuke the monster and move on. That is how i did it in Penumbra and games like Bethesda's Call of Cthulhu DCOTE.
i remember the first time i played penumbra. it was amazing in a similar way. good to see they went even further with the puzzles and having many approaches to it. i love that.
Alien Isolation works way better on PC where you can mod the Alien to have a much longer “leash.” They gave the Alien all this technically advanced AI behavior…and then gave it a short leash so the player is always dragging it around and it is always very close to the player. You almost never see it’s exploratory behavior or advanced AI with the default settings.
It's advanced behaviour is oversold, I am afraid Altho, the problem with the "leash" is as much how tight it is as it is how stupid the players are with constantly using lockers, even if it leads to their demise
What the OP says about using a mod to "fix" Alien Isolation actually ruins it. Let me explain. And I'll start by mentioning a little SPOILER that gets often ignored in these discussions. And its this: YOU'RE NOT DEALING WITH ONE XENOMORPH IN THE GAME. BUT WITH MANY OF THEM AT ONCE. That's right. A single Xeno is not supposed to be lurking around the ship. But a whole hoard of them. That is something that you learn by the end of the game. That is why it seems like the Xeno "teleports" magically to different locations. When in reality, you are dealing with different xenos that are patroling those areas. So the PC mod mentioned by OP, it was made with the erroneous concept that there is just one single Xeno in the entire ship. But that is not what is really going on. Therefore, by keeping the xeno away from the player, the mod actually ruins the surprise at the end when the player learns why they found it nearly impossible to get away from the Alien. It was always on their asses. Anyway, a good Alien Isolation player should have no problem dealing with the xeno even in the unmodified version of the game. The key to success in that game is this: • Avoid camping for too long - you have to keep moving at almost all times to avoid the game's AI to send the Xeno to look for you. Study the map and use the motion detector to know where to head over (the detector works even on nightmare mode). • Don't depend on items to distract the alien (they become worthless the more you use them). Instead try to do like Sam Fisher does in those Splinter Cell games and sneak pass every human, android or alien to reach your goals. I've beaten the game on Nightmare mode without mods of any kind. Its perfectly doable. And I understand that Alien Isolation is not a game for everybody. Especially for those that get easily flustered when under pressure. I dunno, maybe I've played the Souls games too much and that's why AI doesn't seem to be too difficult to me. Just normal? 😅 I also don't wanna tell people to avoid using the mod if that's the only way they can play Alien Isolation. If they still enjoy the game tha way, by all means go for it.
I mean, it's a worse version of AI simply because a) the monster is not remotely threatening after the first hour of the game and b) the campaign is too short and so is the level design.
I am surprised by how different this is from Soma! While gameplay and interactivity in Soma were "okay", this one improves on it greatly. Unfortunately, story just exists in this game and it doesn't try to construct a narrative as well as Soma did
This is the right balance of horror: A complete stealth focus (Outlast and previous Amnesia games): tends to become tedious ones you stop finding the roaming monsters scary and instead view them as obnoxious obstacles that prevent you from exploring and going forward. An action focus on the other hand (RE 4 and Dead Space): tends to leave you with too much ammo (because directly confronting the monsters is mandatory) that at some point it's starting to feel more like a power fantasy than a horror. A balance of these 2 is what a proper horror game should strive for!
Fixed checkpoints are perfect for horror games. That said, as someone who isn’t in the least bit competitive, if I keep messing up and have to replay the same bit over and over, I’ll probably give up completely. That nearly happened with Alien Isolation in the hospital. I may try this. I’ve been constipated for a while.
I think this game just nails that aspect. Whenever I died and lost like 20 minutes of progress, I just laughed and said okay okay, I got it this time. I didn't find it frustrating. Play normal.
If you run out of space in the item box, whatever you do don't leave raw meat lying around on the ground. I did this and came back later to a save room infested with rats going after the meat, lol
Game is ok and kinda frightening/surprising but could have been way Better -The Monster Design is a let down and it 1 Hit kills way to often making encounters rather feeling "Numb" -Rats require almost Always the Use of Rare materials... Why can't we just KICK them!??? Let them Scream in agony so that the Monster appears up to 99% but let me DO THIS!!!! -Played on a Console and the Control shemes were kinda bad(the default one in particular) Oh and btw. You can always totally skip much of the Game in the locker Room by guessing the Numbers! It may take some time but I did this on my very 1st playthrough even on HARD to get the Lighter Asap
the only necessary use for the storage box I found is to store meat. If you just drop meats on the ground, rats will spawn and eat them when you return there next time.
It would be EXTREMELY COOL to have generator strain as an option like the more lights you have on the more fuel the gen uses and too much gives a chance to shut the generator off entirely and you’ll then need to restart it
I've considered that. It is cool in concept for sure. But I fear it would become really tedious because you'd have to run around the entire area and turn off the lights, run back to previous areas to turn off lights. Turn them all back on again. I'm not sure how fun it would be. Could be a cool mod idea though.
@@TheT0nedude He thinks it's big comedy but its' kind of just kicking an excellent game and dev team while they were already massively down from that 5/10 IGN shit.

Way more scary than RE7 (i never got scared of RE games actually).
I love notes so that didn’t bother me at all. Amnesia has some cool stories told in the notes. But with the ability to drop things on the floor. It makes sense that you can just drop them. But I have left stuff on the ground and come running in and kicked the item away where I couldn’t get it. Maybe they could have the items disappear after 5 minutes or put them randomly in a new spot so you can still use it but have to find it again.
Yeah but that would have no lore justification and Frictional are all about that immersion. They likely thought hard about it then decided fuck it, reward people who dare to dump their items on the floor in the hope the game remembers it’s there.

The monster won't come out if the generator is on as it hates lights. However, if you are making noise, it will follow you through the walls and come out when the lights are out or if you are near a hole
It's a good game but even on hard i never felt worried about the generator since there's a vine cellar with around 40 bottles and a fuel storage with infinite fuel. So i never had to worry about fuel. Edit: I am extremly dissapointed after discovering this game uses AI generated images.
You can't even get into the wine cellar until late in the game. Saying you never felt worried about the generator of the wine cellar doesn't make sense.
@@underthemayo Well i still found a ton of bottles outside of it. You are right though, i was worried in the early game about fuel. But you don't find the screwdriver THAT late into the game so it still makes it kinda easy and i probably won't replay the game anyway cuz i don't feel comfortable supporting products that use AI generated images.
(Spoilers! This comment is assuming you beat the game) Honestly i loved this game, as a person who hated rebirth, didn't like a machine for pigs all too much (its not bad its just not really what amnesia needed ) this awesome. I loved the inventory mechanics, its similar to the dark descent, but you actually have to think what you want to carry. Amnesia the bunker is basically the dark descent, but 100% better. Although in my opinion, it isn't all too scary, just tense. When the monster found me in the game i wasn't really scared i was like "Oh hello!" And died. While in the dark descent i was like "Oh sh**" if I was found. Which honestly isn't too bad. for the bunker i think it works well to not be all too scary. Overall i think its a solid 9.9/10 only issue i had was the game being way too short. I mean once you get the clipers and wrench the game is basically over. You just need to walk around, avoid the monster at the end, and boom your done! Oh yeah, the guns, i love the addition, they're a tool, not a weapon, the stalker doesn't even get killed by it which is fantastic. I wish more horror games give you a gun and let you know your weak against this thing and your gun won't even kill it if you shoot the monster. The shotgun, i will say i wish you had to find it, because it would be basically more rewarding than killing some blind disabled guy with shotgun. I will admit the boss was cool and fun, its just wish i had more control and have it be my fault if i didn't get it. Maybe have the shotgun in the barracks or something and you have to like knock down a door to it. Idk. But a fantastic game everyone should try!
It’s an amnesia game that means the most important events happened before the game starts, would you rather have annoying flashbacks every time you find an object that jogs your characters memory. It’s not like they had cassette tape’s back in 1916. 15:59

MAYO PLEASE PLAY STAY OUT OF THE HOUSE. It is extremely similar to this game, but the story is more engaging than just a bunch of notes (although there are those too). It has some good immersive sim elements as well.
@@underthemayo Fleshed/ Stretched either way amnesia the bunker fell just a bit short for me. If the game had 1 or 2 more extra sections it would have been perfect. If i had to choose , i would take alien isolation over this cos that game gave me a far better survival horror experience
While I do like alien isolation, I’ve always wondered if most of the appeal wasn’t from the gameplay. But from the xeno itself. I feel just the fantasy alone of facing off against the xenomorph makes the game a 10/10 for some without even digging into the gameplay. The bunkers monster does carry the game a bit but it’s other functions like it’s ACTUAL survival horror features and the multi choice ways of dealing with problems definitely also make it worth playing too. If the monster design were different, I could imagine the game still being received amazingly. But for alien isolation, not as much
Not sure what people were gonna expect from the story when its given to you at face value and the only twist you can scour in piecing the notes had to do with the monster. I don't expect henry to talk either when the monster is literally sound sensitive.
Ok so my question is that this is a major bunker complex after goin through it wouldn’t there be more soldiers stationed here in order to deal with it and French command wouldn’t have abandoned a bunker like this close to the frontline
I agree with most of your points expect the complain about the dragging physics and the note reading because these are two fundamental characteristics of Amnesia and Frictional's game design, The Bunker didn't "do what every game does this days" with note delivered story ,it is literally part of the franchise that pioneered this kind of storytelling since the Penumbra series and the first Amnesia. Not having these things would be like having a Resident Evil game without backtracking and limited inventory. And as a fellow RE fan I believe you would agree that you felt it when features like that were removed from the modern games ,well, it would be the same for an Amnesia fan if the Physics and notes were missing from the Bunker and to be fair, you can guess the main points of the story by just what you see or the recorded notes, the rest are just icing to give you the rest of the ugly details.
May I just explain something really quickly about amnesia, you commented on how you dislike the physics and that the story is to through pages of writing, to clarify Frictional has basically always made amnesia games or just horror games in general like this same with the physics of you having to use your mouse and the pages is how they make the name make sense to the game, very good video though and I'm not meaning to be rude or have a go❤
My problem with Alien Isolation and this type of game without auto saves is I’m not afraid of the actual monster/Alien. The real threat and fear comes from losing my progress and having to redo things over again…. I’m not afraid of the monster…I’m afraid of wasting my time repeating stuff over and over lol
I actually love alien Isolation, but in that game everything that stopped you was closed doors. No creativity in the puzzles. In Amnesia The bunker there's a lot more creativity with what you have to overcome. That said, that game was too long and this one is too short lol.
Oh I'm going to love this one. I never got interested in Amnesia outside of the early days of PewDiePie (I was much younger) as I never liked "survival" horror games that just forced you to run away and/or hide from enemies you could easily kill if you had a weapon, but it's surprising to see that Amnesia does have combat this time around. This is what I wanted RE7 to be more of and by greater extension RE Village, hell that inventory U.I with the hand is straight up RE7 inspired. Definitely going to check this out.

@@underthemayo ill agree there but generated maps haven't really been dabbled with since the late 90s and its been picked up a bit since 2015ish, so it needs far more work but in due time it'll get better, also i do think its good enough now for amnesia since a bunker has a bland layout on purpose, just rooms connected to p ways, its not good enough for caves and landscapes
I think that this game is very similar to alien isolation, more similar than you are willing to admit, but without the nice visuals. It's great but it still baffles me how much you disliked alien isolation
I’ve heard a lot of good things about this game. That how it’s different with the rest of the previous Amnesia titles. This really shown real horror instead of the typical cheesy FNAF jump scares.
It's a fun little game, though the biggest problem I have is the amount of crashes, so many times where I spent like an half an hour or more doing an objective and the game randomly crashed and I lose all my progress and have to start all over, it's way more scary than the beast every could be, also wish it wasn't just the same creature, was hoping for a different one for each area, so the scary factor kinda drops once you get used to him.
@@underthemayo I would recommend checking it out. I wouldn't call it "survival" horror, but what it does differently is that instead of running away like in the Amnesia games, you're forced to run into the darkness and face your fears with blunt objects you pick off the ground. I just remember it being a very visceral experience.

2:20 Correction, you are not taken prisoner. In an unconscious state, you are dragged to a French bunker. Since you play as a French soldier, this is just your own friendly bunker complex which has been overrun by a monster.
Yes, it's been pointed out to me. I misremembered it on replays cause I skipped the story stuff.

Why not give it some good vibes, so the lone Dev that's doing its sequel can get even more motivation.
Fear & Hunger was something, even though it has - as you mentioned - nothing much on the visual front going for it, that disturbed me deeply.

Great to hear. Always been a massive fan of the Amnesia series (even through the lows), great to see the Bunker takes the series to new heights
Sets the tone perfectly.
it introduces you to shooting the gun and the controlling of it without making it seem like a shooter. Its good imo without ruining the mood

2 reviews of Amnesia at the same time by Mayo & Gmanlives, yes!
I love Isolation and if this is similar, I will enjoy it a lot too.

I love the very first Amnesia game. I'm happy to hear that this latest one is solid.
I see the nastiest enemy from all the Penumbra and Amnesia games is still around...opening and closing doors while having a panic ^^
i remember the first time i played penumbra. it was amazing in a similar way. good to see they went even further with the puzzles and having many approaches to it. i love that.
Interesting.
@@underthemayo Unpredictable Alien, love it.
It's advanced behaviour is oversold, I am afraid
Altho, the problem with the "leash" is as much how tight it is as it is how stupid the players are with constantly using lockers, even if it leads to their demise
What the OP says about using a mod to "fix" Alien Isolation actually ruins it.
Let me explain.
And I'll start by mentioning a little SPOILER that gets often ignored in these discussions.
And its this:
YOU'RE NOT DEALING WITH ONE XENOMORPH IN THE GAME.
The key to success in that game is this:
• Avoid camping for too long - you have to keep moving at almost all times to avoid the game's AI to send the Xeno to look for you.
I also don't wanna tell people to avoid using the mod if that's the only way they can play Alien Isolation. If they still enjoy the game tha way, by all means go for it.
@@JedzelexThat makes the adaptative AI kinda weird, why a different Xeno would be pissed off about the flamethrower or something else ?
I mean, it's a worse version of AI simply because a) the monster is not remotely threatening after the first hour of the game and b) the campaign is too short and so is the level design.
I am surprised by how different this is from Soma! While gameplay and interactivity in Soma were "okay", this one improves on it greatly. Unfortunately, story just exists in this game and it doesn't try to construct a narrative as well as Soma did
Game is a masterpiece from start to finish.
This is the right balance of horror:
A complete stealth focus (Outlast and previous Amnesia games): tends to become tedious ones you stop finding the roaming monsters scary and instead view them as obnoxious obstacles that prevent you from exploring and going forward.
An action focus on the other hand (RE 4 and Dead Space): tends to leave you with too much ammo (because directly confronting the monsters is mandatory) that at some point it's starting to feel more like a power fantasy than a horror.
A balance of these 2 is what a proper horror game should strive for!
Actual survival horror with a stalker enemy, that acts as a stalker enemy
We ain't had one of those in a long long while
I really hope that video title is just bait, because Alien Isolation was pretty damn good. Anyway, time to watch the video 😄.
now that I've beaten the game proper, I can finally watch this video
Game is ok and kinda frightening/surprising but could have been way Better
-The Monster Design is a let down and it 1 Hit kills way to often making encounters rather feeling "Numb"
-Rats require almost Always the Use of Rare materials... Why can't we just KICK them!???
Let them Scream in agony so that the Monster appears up to 99% but let me DO THIS!!!!
-Played on a Console and the Control shemes were kinda bad(the default one in particular)
Oh and btw.
It would be EXTREMELY COOL to have generator strain as an option like the more lights you have on the more fuel the gen uses and too much gives a chance to shut the generator off entirely and you’ll then need to restart it
Note: I LOVE this game and am not criticizing it or anything just saying a possible mod or something that would be cool to have
I've considered that. It is cool in concept for sure. But I fear it would become really tedious because you'd have to run around the entire area and turn off the lights, run back to previous areas to turn off lights. Turn them all back on again. I'm not sure how fun it would be.
Could be a cool mod idea though.
It would be funny if they added a noise detection like alien isolation where it can pick up sounds from your mic

You can't even get into the wine cellar until late in the game. Saying you never felt worried about the generator of the wine cellar doesn't make sense.
@@underthemayo Well i still found a ton of bottles outside of it. You are right though, i was worried in the early game about fuel.

Watching Amnesia videos on the phone is something else entirely.
