I would appreciate a part 2 even though I disagree with most everything you said in this first part lol. I think your very biased towards skill based games which is understandable but clearly theres something your missing in terms of how good this game is because plenty of people like myself (i usually play doom eternal and Titanfall 2) absolutely loved the game. None the less I can understand why some people might not like the game and I think you have some good points.

I love your content but disagree on a lot of what you said here. Some stuff I remember:
*There is no punishment for failing or skill involved when opening doors/cutting open vents*
The time it takes to complete the interaction is the point here - you are exposed/vulnerable to attack throughout. You mention this in the hive/nest section, yet there are many instances of danger when performing this action throughout the game. Doing this in the early parts is essentially the game teaching you how long it takes, so you know in advance once you get to sections where you are in danger.
*Waiting for the tram is good but nothing happens / the alien never shows*
If you stick around too long there the alien does actually show.
*It takes nearly 4 hours for the alien to arrive*
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you've forgotten, because the alien turns up for real right after you fix the access tuner (the same area where you described potentially being boxed in by the npcs).
*You can't pickup weapons from dead npcs*
Yes. This is a legit complaint, I agree. See also: Shadow of The Tomb Raider.
*I THINK I'm going the right way, I hate this map*
Totally intentional. In fact, the map doesn't even work on the hardest setting. Why would Amanda know where she is going - she has never been to Sevastopol. You are supposed to find your way around, explore, drink in the atmosphere. Also, your scanner shows you where to go (once you've picked it up of course).
*God of War / overly-simple puzzles*
    Again, yes. Agreed.
*The upgraded access tuner should make it faster not slower*
The added symbol represents the higher level of security lock.
*In a good stealth game, it's important to know enemy vision range / there should be visual feedback*
Well, not necessarily, no. You're not supposed to be in a dominant position at any time during Alien Isolation, you are the bottom of the food chain. In (early) Metal Gear, you're a highly-trained stealth operative with sci-fi equipment - but the camera is most often placed above you, therefore you cannot see where you're going, making the vision cones very important (which is stupid because these are supposed to be "advanced" soldiers yet can only see 5 feet in front of them, but I digress).
The very minimal UI is one of the reason I love this game, and funnily enough the abundance of UI elements is what put me off *Prey* - all those numbers and icons and health bars, just no. I may still pick it up though, as I hear that stuff can be switched off.
*Knocking over items doesn't make a sound to attract the alien*
Yes, good call, that would make things a lot more tense. In fact, the indie game "Among The Sleep" did this very well.
*The alien can't climb obstacles / navigate complex layouts*
While it's true it doesn't jump over tables and stuff, the alien does enter and traverse ventilation shafts that you also use, and this is *genuinely* terrifying.
    *LV426 walking is boring*
I suppose this is just down to taste rather than a genuine good or bad point. I like it, if you don't that's fine. The objective is unclear though, I'll give you that.
*The derelict is ruined by Prometheus*
I actually agree, but that's not the game's fault.
*I wish the game wasn't a success because it shows that this is what we want*
The game apparently undersold severely, as such we have no sequel, which breaks my heart.
*The stealth is this game is bad*
I don't think it is though, there's a purity to it, a rawness. Minimal HUD/UI icons, you use your own vision and hearing to try and decipher where danger is and move from there, reacting as best you can when things don't go to plan.
    *Ending with a QTE*
    Yeah, disappointing finale gameplay-wise.
That's about what stood out to me. I thought I'd address things like a thoughtful person rather than a raging fanboy, haha.

Under The Mayo That’s not necessarily true. The Alien hunts the player for at least two thirds of the total gameplay, even more if you were to back track to get all the collectibles after unlocking all the items and even when the Alien is not there, there are normally androids and enemy humans. The first few of the times you have to do the mini games and quicktime events were really just there to prepare you for what’s to come really, aside from that there are always enemies there.

Personally I found the Alien stealth sections to be absolutely captivating and not confusing at all, especially on Hard difficulty. The Alien felt unpredictable but not frustratingly so. The developers struck a fine balance between making the Alien suitably unpredictable and scary, while giving the player enough tools to predict its movement to an extent and avoid it efficiently, while still moving towards your objective at a brisk pace.

Opening door has no fail state - does being eaten by the Alien count? It's pretty obvious the purpose of these tasks, turning on generators opening doors, they all take time so you have to plan around the alien. They show you them before the alien arrives so you know how to do them, this isn't rocket science. It is a stealth game. You literally suggest the player should get hurt by failing to open a door due to jamming her finger.
"We're supposed to be in the next generation of gaming". This was released in 2014. It's 2020.
Crafting is supposed to make you decide what items you need, so instead of finding items ready made and having what you find, you have to make a choice. It's not just to take time.
You repeatedly dismiss flavor text as useless or boring. To those of us who did not go out of their way to take a disliking to the game, or those of us who like the Alien world the flavor text was very good. It gives you a deeper sense of what has been going on, instead of just presenting this blank empty space station (it's not a ship, by the way). Without it we would not know why it is so empty except for the androids, why it is falling apart, and what it is even for. You clearly did not appreciate the atmosphere and this is part of that.
A more succinct and observant criticism here would be how the game gives mixed signals. On the one hand it encourages you to explore to find these logs and learn about the station, characters, and what happened. At the same time it actively discourages you from doing so by having you hunted at the same time. Since the flavor text is just that, flavor and non-essential, the smart decision would be to just ignore it.
The game has 4 difficulties. On the lowest the Alien is practically blind. Your videos show you playing on this difficulty, then proceed to criticize the game based on it being too easy and the alien not seeing you. Interesting.
"You can't whisper to get a guards attention and then quietly suffocate him".
One of the items you can craft (which you dismiss as time wasting) is a noisemaker, designed to ... get peoples attention. You can throw it at 'guards' to attract the alien to them, and it will kill them, or you can use it then sneak up behind and stealth kill them. You make no mention of this, and suggest that the game should have whispering? Along with your other suggestion of interrogating npcs. Are you kidding?
You claim the alien doesn't appear until the hospital part. While the Alien is dynamic and different per play, there are scripted encounters meaning the Alien always appears before this point. My conclusion then is that you are just straight up lying at this point.
Your sequence in which you die in the flaming room. Your motion detector has a bar to show you where to go. You check the map repeatedly to see where to go but don't check the item specifically given to you for this purpose. "And what do you know, you're not supposed to follow the objective on your map". No, you're not, you were told this in the game. Specifically. You clearly paid little attention, because you had no interest in this game and then criticized it for your own lack of attention.
The game is far from perfect and I could write an essay on it's problems, but your review is almost childlike in it's approach. You nitpick at every given opportunity without putting the thought into how something might act as a mechanic - like the door opening and generator starting. Being a mechanic does not necessarily mean it is good or free from criticism but this seems to have fallen on deaf ears. You either deliberately fail to mention it or simply couldn't comprehend it. Either way it is a dishonest review, by intent or stupidity the reader will have to decide.
Some of your suggestions are hilarious though.

Not only that, but its designed to be easy when you have the proper upgrade, but very difficult if you don't. Kinda like Deus Ex, where the hacking minigames are practically impossible if you didn't level up the Hacking skills, but the LVL 1's are still more forgiving than the LVL 4's. So in this game the hacking minigame is braindead easy because you have the proper LVL equipment. But if you try one that is a higher level, then its much harder and you have barely any time. Incentivising you to search out the upgrades, or try your luck.

The whole point of the slowless is to add to the threat of the alien. (I agree it's overused in walking sections). If you could just rush through spaces and pick up ready to use med kits like it was a Doom game, then there would be no tension, no anxiety, no horror. The entire atmosphere of the game would fall apart. Same with why all the animations take so long, why even saving the game is so tedious. Hmm... I enjoy most of your videos and I gave this video a like, because I know you worked a lot for it, but you say so many wrong things about the game... You can hate it, all people cannot like a game of course, but you're wrong in many places and misinform about the game.
First, about the movement. Alien Isolation is supposed to be a slow game, that's a part of the experience. Amanda cannot jump and go through certain areas but that's how it works ; when you understand that, you play the game accordingly, and a normal player wouldn't try to do impossible things during all his playthrough. The game wants you to feel vulnerable, and for that you cannot move like a ninja. The Alien also cannot jump over beds or boxes, not because they couldn't program it, but because you would have no chance to escape it, really... The game balances perfectly between the ultimate predator the Alien is and the fact that it is a game, so the Alien cannot be overpowered.
The mini-games are simple, yes, but because it is not the focus of the game. They allow you to interact with the world, and the challenge is not to complete them, but to do it as fast as possible. You have a lot of them so that when you encounter them during the sessions where the Alien chases you, you know how to deal with them. And you have to do it quickly and smartly, because if you do it when the Alien is nearby, well... You'll die. They are meant to be instinctive.
7:30 - Yes, you can only hit people with your maintenance jack, maybe because... It is not an action game. As I said, you need to feel vulnerable, Amanda is not the Doomguy, you know. That's why I think you totally miss the point of the game, you always compare it to other games most oriented towards action, like Prey for example, while Alien Isolation is not about action AT ALL. It explains why you can't take the weapon of someone : the game imposes its pace. You have to learn how to deal with your first group of humans in M3 before the game gives you your first gun, then you only have the Shotgun when the game considers it to be useful, and with a few ammo, because, once again, weapons ar only an option in a horror game. It works like original DOOM maps, where you only have access to certain weapons when the conceptor of the map consider necessary to give you theses weapons, and not before.
7:54 - Just a quick note here, but if you wait for too long, the Alien drops in this place.
8:50 - I don't understand your complaints about the crafting system, because ten seconds after, you say it makes sense in a survival game, but you are in a survival-horror game, so... The crafting system does its job, you craft the items you think useful and it encourages the player to explore the map to loot everything so that you can be equipped for the more difficults parts of the game. You also totally bypass how the game encourages the creativity of the player. A:I gives you a lot of possibilities to deal with each situation and to play with the Artificial Intelligence of the game. You can use your flashlight, a noise maker, a flare, or making noise with your maintenance jack to attract somebody or make the alien attack a group of humans. You want to do a mini-game in peace ? Use a smoke bomb. A group of droids or humans ? Pipe bomb. You can make traps so that you can run and the alien will activate it when following you, etc. If you are out of fuel, the Alien can be stopped if you shoot at him, giving you some time to adapt. You can also shoot an oxygen cylinder to make an explosion which will affray the Alien... And all of that gives you enough tools to compensate your vulnerability and deal efficiently with the ennemies.
17:40 - Another moment that shows you don't know what type of game you are playing... It is slow , it's a fact, but it is made in order to immerse you in the game. I like the fact that they never fell into action and respected their motto for the game : they wanted to recreate the atmosphere of the first movie, not of Aliens. Of course, if you don't agree with this vision and if you like Aliens more than the first movie, then you won't like the game, but you should have known what the game was about before playing it.
19:00 - Well, the detection system is not hard to understand... When you are behing a box, a bed, a table, the ennemy cannot see you, even if there is some «invisible» spaces. When an ennemy detects you, like this android did (but apparently you didn't see it, which your fault, not the game's), there is a small moment of «warning», which means the android will stop moving and will watch you, or the Alien does a «hissss», and then they will attack. This small moment shows you that you have been noticed, so you have a little time to adapt yourself. You can either decide to face the ennemy, or hide better so that the ennemy will «forget» you and just continuing examining the area. If the game does that and gives you this moment of «warning», it is because without it and if the Alien would be able to attack you as soon as it sees you, a normal player will have actually zero chance to survive, and the game would be totally unbalanced and unfair. Imagine the poor IGN reviewer against an Alien that gives you no chance to escape. There is a mod that does what you say, about the Alien and its behaviour. The mod makes the Alien moves really fast permanently and it attacks you as soon as it sees you or as soon as he hears you doing noise. And it is BRUTAL. And I weigh my words. Only veteran players (aka speedrunners) can deal with that. It is an other aspect where the game is really intelligent. The Alien has to be unpredictable, but as a game, the player needs to understand how the AI works to be able to deal with it, and that's why the AI in Alien Isolation is so good.
23:50 - Yep, when you use the sprint button twice a second instead of maintening it, it doesn't attract the Alien. You can also use «silent walk» which makes no sound at all by pressing forward + right (if I remember correctly). Of course, it totally breaks the game, but apparently you want to do a second part, so if it can help you going into certain places quicker...
34:20 - Hey, didn't you complain that the game didn't encourage you to explore ? And when you have to explore, you are lost ! That's the point of Alien Isolation, you are lost in the station, you know nothing about this station but you need to find a way to get out, and to do that you explore the station to discover what can help you to progress, with the constant pressure of the Alien chasing you. Also, you seem to be very alienated by the map, so stop watching it and explore by yourself ! It will prevent you from doing the same mistakes over and over again.
I had to do this commentary, because even if the video is 50 minutes long, it is really incomplete. Not only you show that you didn't understand the game mechanics, but also how it was designed.

For the mod, you don't want to try it, trust me, unless you are very familiar with the game and know some of the speedrun techniques. I chose this example to show that without the time of «warning», and if the ennemies were super intelligent, the game would be totally broken and unbalanced. Basically, in the mod, the ennemies are hypersensitive and will notice you from far away if you make any little noise or if you enter in their line of sight even for half a second. Furthermore, the Alien is constantly running and the androids are running too. The humans will also start shooting at you immediatley, etc. This is more a troll mod designed for hardcore players and speedrunners.
However, if you want a «fair» hardcore mod, you can install the multiple aliens mod, which enhances a lot the difficulty only with the normal AI, so that you have a chanve to survive. It adds up to five aliens and it is a pretty good challenge for an experienced player.
Anyway, you will find all the information you need on Pyscho Hypnotic's discord, including the links to download these mods.

from personal experience (playing on hard difficulty and normal):
    - the alien does show up in that section where you have to wait for transit, trust me it caught me really off guard
-The long waiting for doors and such isn't difficult but the waiting is the difficulty, I mean have you seen the amount of people who have gotten fucked over of it, and its not bad, but it definitely adds tension and you have to set up your time before doing it (especially if you're getting chase and/or are surrounded by hostiles).
    - I actually think the a.i is pretty good, from the many times that I've died, even though yes the alien has sometimes not seen me when I'm right there, but also I noticed that if you don't attract the alien then he will almost never come out of the vents, and if you do then it becomes more frequent and more difficult to get to your objective. and I cannot count how many times I thought I would be safe under a bed only for this asshole to check it.
-Also the times the alone has been in a roof vent and I didn't pay attention, disappointed to say how much it screwed me during chase sequences. not only that but you can definitely trigger an alien encounter if you get to careless, trust me I've summoned him on purpose so he could kill other people on the station
    - A lot of blocked off sections (like doors) are ones you can access later in the game when you have to return to said areas and I think that's pretty good considering you get this sort of satisfaction from finally being able to open that one door you couldn't before.
    - The minigames have been a threat to me, a lot. There has been times where I've had to do some 4x speed tactics to get them done before an android catches me and also before an alien shows up, sure its nothing tense at first but as it gets more difficult and as encounters become more common you will definitely wish it was easier. (tuner upgrade is to open higher security, besides why would they make it easier when the game is supposed to get harder?)
    - I don't understand how the map is difficult, the only times I've ever gotten lost was my own fault for trying to run thinking it was one way then check the map and notice my mistake
    - You don't have to pay that much attention to the memos, when there's a code its highlighted, and usually the most important part is the utility.
-Pretty sure you wouldn't focus so much on trying to find out what happened to your mom when you're trying not to get killed by everything around you.
    - I could say a lot more but no one probably cares, but overall I think what you want from the game is so out of what the game is, why would a SURVIVAL horror have a lot of action and fast segments, its supposed to be slow and tense and people who enjoy it aren't "people who don't like real videogames" or children, it just seems like you want a game to give you something its not and that somehow being the game's fault for being slow (again, horror games are usually slow and tense) i agree with somethings you said but yeah no.

If you look at the original RE, it is all about balancing your supplies around either trying to dodge around enemies so that you don't have to waste any supplies clearing them out or dealing with all the enemies in an area and clearing it for the future at the expense of losing some supplies.
Alien Isolation makes you do the exact opposite. Instead of dodging around the enemies, you are *sneaking* around them trying not to draw attention. Fighting is *rarely* worth it, in fact the game actively discourages you from doing so since it makes noise.

I thought you were joking for the first few minutes, unfortunately I disagree with a lot of your criticisms. I would suggest you look into the design philosophy and look for reasons as to why people like the game. I feel you left some aspects unappreciated as well, such as the story of the station itself- which you learn about via reading the data logs.
One example I have to defend the game is for the crafting system, if I am correct it was actually made intentionally clunky and awkward to use to increase the tension as the game is not paused when you use it, so if you make a bad call and craft when it is not safe or pull out the wrong item in a panicked rush (something I’ve done) you made be killed by the alien or androids as a result.

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  4 года назад +24

My criticism with the crafting system as a time filler is much less to do with the clunkiness of crafting in real time, and much more to do with the fact that the effect of the crafting is to have every room filled with 3 or 4 boxes that you have to slowly walk up to and open, retrieve, and close with 3 button presses every time. And that even though it has crafting, and hours of "walk up to box and pick up the contents", there is NO inventory management at all so what's the point of asking me if I want to take things?

    • @captaingar9244
      @captaingar9244 4 года назад +20

Under The Mayo again I reference the point of making crafting clunky and slow, so the way I see it, having to walk up and look in every cabinet adds to peril (on harder difficulties resources for crafting are less prevalent so you have to be considerate as to what you commit to an item).
While there is no inventory management you can still “manage” what you have e.g. I saw an ethanol that I wanted to pick up but had no more space, nor did I have enough components to make a full molotov, so I simply committed one ethanol which allowed me then to pick up another. As I said on higher difficulties it’s harder to find resources, so you need to be more considerate as to what you craft, that and the alien I found is much easier to attract, thus I find I am able to search fewer lockers or cabinets (or it takes longer if I’m desperate) as the alien is snooping around and harder to get rid of for prolonged periods of time, that’s why I play on nightmare- also you have to use more flamethrower fuel to scare off the alien.

I enjoy most of your reviews, but this felt disingenuous. The whole point of the game is to make you feel alone and vulnerable in a strange, mysterious place. The doors, mini games, save posts, and vents are all designed to take up time, thus leaving you exposed.
15:23 I love finding terminals because I want to learn more about what is going on. Allow yourself to be immersed in the fantasy
    20:00 disagree.
    20:37 Hot take.
21:12 The human definitely noticed you, lol
21:35 You already critiqued how long it takes to open doors. The door here is automatic, thus saving time. If you accidentally opened automatic doors and alerted the alien you would complain about that too.
21:42 Amanda Ripley is a survivor and engineer (hence she can craft and knows how to maneuver around the station). She is not a special operative trained in interrogation.
26:18 You can return to this area later, and you won't die in the smoke
    27:24 "Games can be hard"
    29:05 lol
29:20 you are told multiple times in the game that other people are just trying to survive and will either not help or kill you. This isn't a surprise
    32:00 so you're oblivious?
32:30 You claim the game lied to you because it wants you to, "traverse" instead of, "find a route". Therefore you are also a liar because you claim the game tells you to, "climb up" when it clearly says, "traverse".
37:05 I think this is a key point to understanding your disapproval of Alien: AI. You want a shotgun with lot's of ammo to blast through enemies. This is a survival horror. The game is slow paced and wants you to use weapons as a last resort. There is nothing wrong with this.
40:57 Bad take. Like every other game with any kind of loot, corpses in Alien: AI have loot. What difference does it make if they are in the hive or habitation deck? Also, you just spent time explaining how frustrating it is you can't kill everyone with a shotgun, and now you're making an argument that death is sad? What?
41:16 I found every location capable of inspiring dread. It's subjective.
42:20 Industrial Working Joes are stronger than their counterparts, and can't be taken out with an EMP. That is, they present a greater challenge.
43:54 There it is. You wanted an action game.
49:13 Get out of her, man lol.
49:19 We got one. It's called Alien: AI
49:46 Imma go check it out
I think the game just wasn't for you. Your review made it seem like you had no interest in the story, universe, or immersion. Also, the title seems like click bait.
I enjoy a lot of your videos. I particularly like the DOOM Eternal videos (In fact I like to go back and forth between Doom and Alien: AI. It's fun to live a power fantasy one day, and survival horror the next). However I disagree with this review and think it is one big hot take.

I agree. I would add, that the "padding" isn't there to be challenging, they are there to extend the time it takes to move about, especially when the alien is about, making your timing of when you open the door the real challenge. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he can attack when you're in the mini-games.

    • @Dan0RG
      @Dan0RG 4 года назад +2

THANK YOU! I almost agree with everything, except:
21:42 I'm pretty sure by "interrogation" he meant simply being able to talk to NPC's and get some kind of useful information out of it (there is actually one place in the game where you can do that, but it's completely optional and it's not clearly indicated that you are supposed to talk to them). Maybe even negotiate with the hostile ones. I can see your point of how it doesn't really suit the theme and feel of the game, but it would probably make it better as a game AND as a believable story experience.
26:18 Yes, but since you first see it during that sequence, you'd think it would be placed there to aid you right now, not give you some unrelated exposition half a game later.
27:24 That's not addressing his point that he had already completed that section only to be forced to do it again because he died in the next one. That's where I'll have to agree with him: there should have just been an autosave after the explosion.
29:20 I think a better argument here would be the fact that they literally say "SHOOT ANYTHING THAT MOVES!" when you first enter that area. Though, I have to cut him some slack because (as he brings up later) there are times when you would assume the NPC's are hostile when, in fact, they're not and you get a failstate for killing them (my least favourite design choice in the whole game).
32:30 Well, the issue here is that he assumed that climbable ledge WAS the blockage, while in reality it was to the right of it... straight across from where you first enter the area. He could have easily avoided that whole conundrum if he had followed the characters' movement, checked the signal detector more and actually listened to the dialogue. Seriously, his character literally says "There's a path through there! Give me a leg up!", which I presume he ignored.
40:57 I think the issue with the shotgun, once again, was that the game punishes you for killing people who have no guns and who Ripley has no reason to care about. But yeah, she should care about the people in the hive just as much as for all the people she's killed.
      42:20 Don't see how that's relevant.
One last thing, I agree that the way he criticized this game was BS, but he totally has the right to not give a crap about the story, the universe and the immersion. It's subjective and doesn't make up for any of the flaws in the gameplay (which, by the way, there are many, but it's not nearly as bad as this guy made it out to be).

the "fail state" when removing the braces from the doors with the maintenance jack, operating switches, turning on generators, hacking, using keycards, blow torches etc come from getting caught by the alien while performing these operations. you are vulnerable and exposed while performing these actions, so choose when to do these actions wisely, and be quiet about it. He comes across as disingenuous and just seems to complain for the sake of complaining sometimes. He constantly compares it to PREY instead of judging it based on its own merits. The universe was recreated perfectly, the atmosphere was fantastic and the feeling of dread ever present. This is what made it a BRILLIANT game.

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree 3 года назад +43

I wouldn't even say most of his points are valid, several of them are straight up wrong. Plus he seems to completely miss the point of its gameplay systems (like the minigames are not meant to be challenging puzzles, they are supposed to force you to stop moving and do a thing so that you are more vulnerable, meaning you have to play smart and time when to use them). Heck he mentions how he likes horror games like Silent hill, but then he complains about the physical combat not having a block, hard and light attacks, or a bunch of action game elements, as though that is needed. Despite that being the exact same for Silent Hill, which is a much more comparable style game than what he's thinking. Plus he seems to have encountered a lot of bugs that he just assumed were normal gameplay things. And certainly bugs are a bad thing, and not his fault. However the amount of bugs he mentions are bizarre, and don't reflect the actual game (though it does have a few common, but not harmful, bugs).
I feel like he came in wanting to hate the game, or was in a bad mood and one thing bothered him and from then on he was never going to give it a proper go. Also he complains about the length of the game a lot, yet all of those complaints seem to directly tie to his own fault, and not the game, it should NOT have taken him that long to get through the beginning section, unless he WANTED to take that long. Not only that, but the only way to solve this issue, would be to remove everything extra and just make it all linear hallways with no ability to look into extra rooms, which I know he would hate that. So this is actually the best of both worlds, people who want to immerse can check out those rooms, so its a more lived-in world, while the rest can just progress immediately. I just don't see the problem with that, this game is clearly prioritizing immersion for those that always wanted to see the world of Alien in detailed 1st-person.
Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but I found this video pretty dissapointing, and its clear its just a game that he hates because of reasons beyond just the game, or its a tiny part that sours the whole experience, and we ALL have a game like that so I get it. Sucks he couldn't enjoy it, but I wish he had at least given a proper criticism of it on its own merits and not what he wanted it to be. (although his explanation of how it "should've" been, is literally HOW it already is, so I have no clue how he missed the entire point of the game)

@@MrDerp-bf8nt Yeah, sadly this was my first video from Mayo so it wasn't the best first impression. I didn't mind some others I watched but it definitely made me hesitant about his stuff.
Like Alien Isolation isn't the best game ever and I'd wager it actually has a lot wrong with it. But the thing is that I've been very critical of games in general lately, especially horror games, but something about this one made me really enjoy it and not feel to concerned about some of its gameplay choices, or their association with worse games (like the locker hiding is such a bad design in other games but I don't feel so bad about it in this one since its actually not very useful and you have many other ways of dealing with the situations).
So I feel like perhaps Mayo came in with the wrong mindset, but I also don't know what the right one should be. Perhaps this game just isn't his style, heck I would say its not mine in general but there is this charm to it that I can't deny but perhaps has no effect on him.
But I hope he at least re-examines some of his critiques since I feel they are completely wrong or he is merely misunderstanding the purpose. Like with the minigames.
In conclusion, this is a janky game, but one with a lot of heart and charm and I feel bad he couldn't enjoy it.

I had a completely different experience with this and never questioned all the door stuff. The premise is you are helpless aboard this giant space station with a xenomorph that can attack you at any time. The game doesn't go into a paused menu when you are reading computers. There's supposed to be tension at all times and the game really does build to the nest area which I agree is the best area. Amanda is not some advanced stealth warrior so the game gives her the ability of a normal person in a bad situation. If the stealth doesn't do it for you and you aren't drawn in by the atmosphere, then you aren't going to like this because it is a ton of walking and backtracking. The pathways being blocked off is a common issue in all games and the feeling you felt during the area where you had to repeat everything over repeatedly is why I'm not a fan of the Dark Souls genre. Things stop becoming fun and lose the impact they had when you keep seeing them to get back to where you were. I thought Prey was a lot more forgettable than this. Also way more action oriented while this was way more of a slow burn. Sorry you hated it. Still gave me one of the best horror experiences I've had in any medium in recent memory as a huge horror fan.

I'm pretty sure if every puzzle was completely original he would say something like "What is this? A puzzle game?" Why he didn't like that Doom level he mentioned in a video? Because it was cramped and had much less action than more open sections where action is really intense. I don't know why he even picked this game.

It seems like you and I had totally different experiences with this game. You describe how in the nest the mini games have the added threat of the alien possibly killing you, and that you didn't feel that anywhere else. When I played the game, I started on hard, but had to drop it to easy because of how relentless the alien was. I literally couldn't move ten feet without it dropping out of the vent within a few feet of me, and I'm very mediocre at stealth games. Even on easy, every step was a tense game of cat and mouse. Any extra sound I made would attract it. On my play through that included knocking over objects in the environment, gunshots, and the pings from using the motion tracker. There were also times I ran out of flame thrower fuel because the damn thing just kept coming at me. So there was the tension of resource management, the tension of the alien's relentless assaults. I'm not saying that your experience didn't happen, it's just bizarre to me how it seems like we had objectively different experiences with the game mechanics.

I think the problem with a lot of professional reviewers is that they assume everyone is on the same skill level as they are. By pretty much all accounts, Alien Isolation is a very challenging game. In fact, I think it would have been more commercially successful if it had been LESS challenging. Most players never complete the game. I figure half of them because they don't really appreciate the helplessness aspect of being in a survival horror game and the other half because they got tired of dying all the time. But I'm a pretty average gamer and I finished it 3 times, at least one of those was on the Hard setting.

You're right. He had a different experience because he's on the easiest difficulty setting, where the alien is borderline blind and doesn't punish you nearly as much as the other difficulty levels. He complains and cries that the mini games are too easy and that the crafting system doesn't need to exist, but misses the point of both entirely because he likes everything to be Doom Eternal. A few of his critiques are fair, but this review is even worse than the CoD player from IGN, which probably killed this game on release.

I first played Alien Isolation on 360, I now play on PS4.
Personally for me the performance differences are astronomically better on the PS4.
Sure, most of the game is very artificial however this game is meant to be a nostalgic love letter for Alien fans like me.
Those mini-games were heavily present in lots of PS2 games if you knew where to look.
Case in point is Run Like Hell Hunt Or Be Hunted.
Games are unfortunately forced to appeal to the casual market to even stand a chance of being successful.
I don't really blame the devs as much as I do the constant and stupidly fast failing of the consumer's braincells.
Alien Isolation is still a great horror game otherwise and manages to be something most Alien games haven't been in a long time.

I think the reason intention behind switches and doors requiring so many inputs and are pretty slow is to make it more tense. It makes it more risky to come out of hiding to interact with something. The failure state for not pressing the right buttons is the alien kills you. The alien not showing up for a while (which is pretty similar to the first movie), gives you a chance to get used to doing it and the time it takes, before having to do it under pressure. If you had to get accustomed to doing that while the alien was stalking you, it could be pretty frustrating, since most of the time if the alien see's you, you're dead. Also, imo whenever something requires one button press but has a lengthy animation, it makes it annoying (you know, like the sentinel batteries). Having it be more interactive makes the long animations less tedious, coz you are still somewhat in control.
I reckon crafting serves the same purpose, you have to take the time to make stuff, which means you have to make sure you are safe before you do it. The game is obviously meant to be slow and methodical. I really don't think they were trying to make it realistic. When it comes to developing systems for the game, its quite clear much more time was spent on the aliens AI. Altho when it comes to the alien, I'd say I don't really think it acts like one. It stomps about and makes loads of noise, when they are generally depicted as stealthy ambush predators.
I think they could have put more clutter and walls in front of places you cant go, but tbh I think thats a minor gripe.
Also the terminals and recordings are obviously meant to give you some idea of what was happening on the station before and during the shit hitting the fan. Its to give the idea that this used to be a place that people lived and worked. You can just quickly scroll through and ignore anything thats not a door code. They operate basically the same way as the lore pages from Doom Eternal, completely optional flavour text. If you didn't give a shit about the demon invasion, or the hell priests or night sentinels, they didn't take anything away from what a masterpiece that game was.
And if loads of them had information that just coincidentally helped you progress the area you are currently in, it'd feel really fake.
With the button bit in particular, it makes sense that bald guy tells you. If you had to go and look at the terminal, read the bit about how that door worked (which doesn't seem like something you'd put in a message to someone), and then you go back to the door and tell the guy, who's been living on the station for months maybe even years, how it works. It'd be tedious. Him just telling you, keeps you moving. Also it show's that altho he is a bit of prick, he does seem to know how stuff works, which would mean he might be good to keep around.
Concerning narrative, the game is about what happened on and getting off the station. It's Amanda's story. If it started going into all the stuff that happened to Ellen Ripley, that'd be annoying, coz, thanks I have seen the films. I know what happened to her.
I kind of feel like a lot of this is mostly just subjective reasons why you personally didn't enjoy the game, which is fine.
But, I don't think you can really say that locked doors that you need to come back to later when you have the right tool (essentially the same way every single metroidvania works), and lengthy animations for stuff is just to artificially inflate the length or to make it "seem like you are playing a game" is not really accurate.

About the last part of your essay(?) I think i saw him reply to another comment saying that a lot of the "minigames" are put in places where there are no threats/minimal threats, so the arguement that they add to the tension is not applicable for about half the game (or more).
As for the thing about the lore pages, they're basically collectibles and can be read on your downtime or whenever you feel like checking it out, they alsp offer no valuable in-game information and don't have a cutscene when picking them up, so if you're not interested in the lore, just don't pick it up.
His complaint about the ship logs are that the game basically wants you to check all of them and skim through each one in case there is something you can use which, when you're bored already, would make it even more tedious since there is no certain/sure "reward" (a door code or something useful) whenever you read one

@Tarbosaurus Missed the point. Any video game should successfully accomplish what it strives to be without having the player bump the difficulty up in order to get the ideal experience. Higher difficulties are meant to add to the experience, not make it mandatory to be selected just to have the ideal one.

Are they just training modes for players to prepare for Nightmare? This just comes off as tryhard bullshit, and not looking at the bigger picture of what makes certain video games great. Also how certain features are locked in such as your console monitoring your head movements which affect gameplay AND the ability of the alien being able to hear your real life sound through a headset is anxiety inducing. There were times when I actually had to hold my breath.

I disagree about crafting being unnecessary. It forces you to choose which tools you’ll have available, and several resources are hard to come by. Like sensors.and you can only hold a certain amount of each. I like it, it’s a system that forces you to pick and choose what tools you want to invest in having.
Also the “mini games” are there to waste your time so that you’re biting your nails trying to finish it as quickly possible before you get spotted by the Alien.

    • @NZBigfoot
      @NZBigfoot 2 года назад

Having played only on the Hardest setting and not using the guns, yeah crafting is vital... you DONT want to engage anything directly ever, not having a spare noise maker at a crucial point can make you get the tightest butt hole... hell even a single flare can be like finding gold, and the choice of using something that is rare to craft can make you sweat... will i need this latter?
Opening a door with a mini game when the Alien is only a just around a corner coming your way and you hear it getting closer literally makes me sweat. The fact this guy talks about using the guns and alot of his footage of him and the human AI has him running up to 3 of them and bashing them around the head shows he must have been playing on low difficulty...

I find it really ironic that a content creator that I watch for his Doom Eternal content is able to have such a take on a game like this without seeing parallels to all the terrible takes on Doom Eternal that you can find on RUclips. You yourself have made videos criticizing reviews of Doom Eternal from gamers who are not fans of the genre or the series and whose criticism of the game revolves around them not understanding the mechanics of the game, the DOOM dance, or wanting to be challenged by a difficult game. Yet, somehow, you make a video about Alien Isolation and do the exact same thing. You don’t seem to understand that stealth games like this are supposed to be slow and methodical and that you can’t just sprint from point A to point B and be fine. Hiding in lockers for minutes at a time? That’s an intended mechanic of this type of game, it forces you to sit there hoping you’re not found without really knowing where the threat is and when it’s safe to come out. Using weapons the entire time? The game clearly doesn't intend you to use them all that much, and even punishes you for doing so a lot of the time, by having the Alien come out and investigate when it hears gunshots. I didn't even know that you couldn't pick up the shotgun from that one corpse, because I play this game trying to not use weapons at all (other than the parts where the game explicitly forces you to use them like when you're fighting the androids in the reactor core), partly because I understand that this is a survival horror game and partly because I don't believe it would befit Amanda's character in the slightest to start killing human beings rather than trying to avoid them.
You’re not supposed to have a bunch of weapons with unlimited ammo and be able to run around and shoot everything, it’s a survival horror game. You’re supposed to hide and sneak around, if you don’t like doing that then you’re playing the wrong genre. And I know you claim that you love horror games and are therefore qualified to make a review as bad as this one, but the fact that your idea of a great stealth horror game is fucking Prey (lmao) tells me that you have no idea what a horror game is. I’m honestly shocked you don’t consider Doom a horror franchise (other than Doom 3) since you’re shooting scary demons by the weird criteria you have for what constitutes a horror game.
As for the minigames and the lack of challenge: they’re not meant to be super difficult on their own, they’re meant to be difficult when paired with the fact that you have a giant xenomorph on the prowl for you or humans wandering nearby ready to shoot at anything that moves. When you hear the alien stomping around outside the room you’re in while you’re doing a puzzle, the ten seconds it takes to solve it feel like ten minutes. Your heart rate goes up, you start freaking out, the music gets more intense, all things that contribute to the incredible atmosphere of this game. That’s what makes this game amazing, its ability to recreate the unmatched atmosphere of the original film. By the way, since you claim to be a fan of the first film, I’m surprised that you didn’t recognize that some of the minigames are directly taken from the film as an homage.
You also don’t seem to understand how a good story is told, as shown in your criticism of the logs on the terminals. A good story doesn’t tell you the whole plot and then puts you into the action, it gives slow and methodical exposition into the world you’re exploring for yourself, and as you start to think to understand it you get some plot twists and secrets revealed that change your perspective of it. The big reveal that Weyland-Utani now owns Sevastopol would be completely pointless if you found the log of Executive Ransome telling another exec that he was able to sell it to The Company at the beginning of the game.
And honestly, with the amount of condescending “lol this game takes no skill” comments you’re making, you’d think it wouldn’t take you 8 fucking hours just to get to the part where you meet Marshall Waits. That takes me what, 3 hours at most? Take the same advice you give to the people shitting on Doom Eternal and “git gud, scrub”. Or better yet, stick to talking about games that you do understand. This is clearly not a game for you

I've always felt A:I has always been more about the environment and atmosphere over gameplay. I've never felt the game was difficult in any way and actively only play it on the highest difficulty with Mic plugged in, I agree its always tense and frustrating which is why I enjoy it, it's definitely a game that isn't made for anyone with no patience you have to know what you're getting yourself in for with this otherwise you will be disappointed it's slow and it won't be over in a day you gotta invest the time. The game's AI itself is really inconsistent I'll give you that but having played it maybe 4 times a lot of the issues you mention are again inconsistent such as the Alien adapting to how you play I've experienced a lot and even witnessed it crawl in the vents with me and chase me through them a few times though annoyingly like twice in my multiple playthroughs which really pisses me off because fuck is it terrifying when that happens because you think you're safe hiding from androids then BAM it drops down from one of its spawn points and you pray you have flame fuel or distance for a molotov otherwise you're boned. Idk I feel like the game is made more for die hard fans of the franchise rather than just casual fans as they wanted to try and replicate the film and the world perfectly with the philosophy that "if it couldn't be made in the 70's then we're not doing it" which is likely the explanation for the simple puzzles as games then we're simple so they had to be clunky and basic. My favourite part is actually the section with the Derelict ship, I love HR Giger, I love his art, I love that scene in the film so being there and seeing it in that clunky EVA Suit was amazing too me and in fact my only complaint with it was that I couldn't jump down into the mist with the eggs I hated being trapped on that walk way I want to see them I want to be among them like Kane was. As for the Xeno not vaulting over the beds etc again Bolaji Badejo wouldn't have been able to do it in that suit so they weren't allowing it here and I'm honestly fine with that myself all of things they kept consistent with the 70's scifi theme I love all the nods to the film and the production I love, the aesthetics, the music, the sounds I fucking love. I honestly think this game is near perfect but again that's coming from someone who's life practically revolves around the franchise, and yes I'm someone that even enjoyed Prometheus and Covenant, they are the worst in the franchise for sure but I still enjoy them

Perhaps you had a different experience. I've played the game through twice on hard, and the alien repeatedly acted like a moron. Not seeing me in plain sight. Unable to climb over simple obstacles. Etc. The AI in FEAR is more impressive than this, and that's 15 years old.

    • @nickporter4279
      @nickporter4279 3 года назад +2

The alien can't climb over objects that you also can't climb over. The player and the alien have basically the same traversal properties, aside from ceiling vents and buttons/QTEs. YMMV on whether that's a design trait that you like, but it is at least fair. What's pretty damn impressive is that the alien can move almost anywhere in the game near the end of the campaign.
Re. hiding, if at least some of your body is concealed then that's usually enough to prevent enemies spotting you. If this wasn't the case, you'd have to spend a hell of a lot more time hiding in lockers, which apparently you're not a fan of.
If you're caught out in the open, there are two more factors: one, the alien has a view cone straight in front of it, so it can walk right next to you and not see you if it's looking the other way... Which is fair enough, an omniscient view is not good programming.
The other factor is another one that's done for gameplay purposes, not necessarily realism (which the video does take pains to state is a good trade-off). Enemies don't instantly spot you. Visual sense is affected by cover, light, proximity, your position in their view cone, and whether you're making any noise. The more of those factors that stack, the more likely their visual sense will be triggered - and how quickly that partial detection will become a full detection. If you're sitting quietly in the dark when the enemy spots you, you'll normally hear a sound cue that it's suspicious, which gives the player one last chance to move into better cover and evade detection. It's a design decision to improve the player experience, but in practise it can look a bit unnatural.

This was a great and absolutely hilarious video that I feel really reviews the game in about the most unfair perspective possible. I think the main thing that isn't understood or purposely overlooked is the intention of the developers and the fact that there is an audience for these types of games that focus on delivering an intense atmosphere over fleshed-out gameplay systems. This wasn't intended to be insulting or punishing in a gameplay sense and I feel like that comes through pretty clear. It's not a game for myself either as I prefer a different style of horror, but man, it's hard to see a game get slammed so hard in such a hillarious way that feels ultimately unfair.
