Sandy Grogg cc
Thank you so much! Finally I can tell what my hooks and needles size are. Such useful information!
You are so welcome!
thanks so much for this informative video on how to size crochet/knitting hooks. I have some crochet hooks which I purchased back in the 50's and know they are not sized the same as hooks today. Your suggestions will help. Thanks again! Truly enjoy all your videos!
Hi Sandra, we're so glad we could be helpful! Thank you for watching :)
Thank you so much ! My favorite hook was a mystery size until today ❤️ i appreciate your quality content!
Fantastic! Thank you for watching 😊
Most useful info, some of my hooks have blurred numbers on them! Thanks so much,Jayda
I've been looking for a chart that shows all the different ways used to refer to hook sizes and found this old video of yours with the link to the chart on your website. Thank you for providing the best chart I've found! Incidentally it's also easy to work out the diameter if you know the circumference, You can use the basic formula we learned in school, d = c/π (that's pi) or just use one of the online tools available. I'm sticking with your very useful chart!
Hi Christine, we're happy we culd help :) Thank you for watching!
Hi jayda when I 1st saw this demo I was new to u tube n was Un aware of the comments area ( now no laughing, b nice 😮) I know now So here goes this demo is most helpful to me n probe by many others thank u. Hope mu get this n art too busy to read me😯
Hi Rose! Thank you for watching :) There's a little learning curve with everything! We were running this channel for 2 years before we realized we could use the search box on our channel homepage to find specific videos we'd made!
I have very poor vision, so I use Clover hooks, because each hook size has it’s own color…Same with Zing knitting needled. I do have three Furls Odyssey hooks and each of thr three is a different color. Each color represents s different size..
I enjoyed seeing your collection.. Hooks, snd knitting needles are fun.
Thanks! I am trying to reacquaint myself with knitting and bought some needles from the thrift store I had no Idea what they were or how to measure it without a gauge. I was measuring the diameter but I kept questioning myself on it. Thanks for clearing that up!
Hi Nadine, we're happy we could help!
Very helpful.. I have two hooks that have no mark on them.. Now I can figure it out.. thanks..
I've been looking everywhere for this information! Thank you 😊 also that giggle 😂😂
Hi Eilzmo, we're happy to help! Thank you for watching :)
This was so convenient. I've got the blue giant hook I've been trying to figure out what size it is and you have the exact same one xD thank you!
We're so glad we could help!
I too have many needles. I have my mother’s, ants and sister’s unfortunately they have all left this earth. But I still enjoy buying needles. Like I just bought the wool needles. My favorite when I need some like an ternizen hook is a brand call Denise. They are interchangeable. I have both a cricket set and a knitting set. I have both my sister and my knitting set.
Hello I really enjoy your tutorials and feel truly blessed to have found this one about the crocheted in Needles and knitting needles. Unfortunately I have no knitting needles due to the fact that I have been a advocate crochet. So I hope there comes a day and time that I might get a chance to win some knitting needles. Maybe sometime in the near future you'll have a giveaway giving me a chance to win some of those beautiful needles I see in this tutorial. Thank you for being someone who cares to give others a chance to know how.
Hi Tina! Knitting is a lot of fun too, in fact I started knitting before crochet :) Most of my knitting needles are hand-me-downs from friends (and their grandmothers) and I've also found several sets in second hand stores! Thrift stores are a great place to look for crochet and knitting supplies (especially if you're on a tight budget!)
thank you I was wondering on the size of my needles than you for your time and help .
Hi Gwendolyn, we're happy to help! Thank you for watching :)
This was a great video! I have 2 of those big blue hooks they are old and I have no idea the size. So now I can find out! Thanks!
Hi Tammy, glad we could help! That big blue hook of mine is older than I am LOL, I'm glad to be able to size it correctly!
Jayda InStitches, yes my big blue one is old, too. My mom had it long before I even thought of learning how to Crochet
Ok I was about to say that about the ruler. lol but you showed the ruler happy crocheting Jada!
Thank you so much for this information! ❤
Thank you for watching 😊
Thank you so much for this! I have been trying to figure out the size of a pretty big hook that was given to me with no size marking and came across your video. As I am watching the video on how to measure you happen to show the exact hook that Im trying to size! The big green hook! lol.
Ha! I bet we have the same hook :) Vintage plastic crochet hooks are notorious for losing their sizing, but they're so nice to use!
Great tutorial and information to know! Thanks for sharing.
May 25th.. Hey, Jada.. i LOVE your videos.. And guesd what? I just usef one of your tips this morning.., i dedperately needed yo know the size of a circular needle... Found a tape measure that includrd mm's.. It worked! Thanks so much.

Thanks for sharing with us Jada
Thank you so much. Very helpful 🤗🤗🤗🤗
So helpful!!! Thanks!
Thank you for watching 😊
Thank you, that was very helpful. I enjoyed the giggles 😀
Thank you for watching!
Thank you Jada for the tutorial. I couldn’t comprehend circumference and diameter (duh). Now I know! Also what’s the difference between the skinny silver steel hooks n our regular hooks?
Hi Margie! The skinny steel hooks are typically super tiny hooks (like 1.50 mm 😲) usually used for thread crochet. They make them out of steel to make them stronger and less likely to snap. A plastic thread crochet hook would snap in a second and an aluminum one might bend. In fact, I'm sure it would! I have old aluminum knitting needles that are very small in diameter (3.00 mm and less) and they all have a bit of a bow to them from years of use.
All the metal "Boye" brand crochet hooks have the size right on em' 👍
God bless you, I finally found out what size don't I have that I picked up from salvation store thank you
Ah! Mysteries solved :) Thank you for watching!
Very handy, thank you!
Super video. Thanks!
Thank you so very much.

Omg thank you ❤️🇨🇦

Great info! TFS!
Thank you.
Great information! Thanks for sharing. 😊💕
Hi Becky! Thank you :) I bet back to school is ramping up at your place! (the fall means more time for crochet, yay!!)
+Jayda InStitches Yes! Kids go back to school September 6 and Julia has middle school orientation on August 30. I can't believe she's headed to middle school and Jake's a Junior in HS! Cheer practices have also started again. I'm slowly starting to crochet again. This summer I really didn't crochet much, but I'm looking forward to fall and crocheting fall/winter wearables (hats, scarves etc) and home decor as well as whatever other goodies you have planned for us. 😊🍁
My girlfriend's two went back TODAY! Wow, Julia's in middle school. Wow! I have no idea where this summer went! I just know it was way too hot and dry (my poor garden!!). I love fall, I think it's my favourite season and I've got so many ideas for projects I'll definitely run out of autumn before I run out of stitches LOL
+Jayda InStitches yes a lot of kids in the U.S. are starting to go back to school now too. Our kids go back on the later side for some reason. hahaha...really looking forward to fall and fall crochet.
Thanks! I would love to see your collection of hooks and needles someday, especially the unique ones like the homemade one you used as an example in this video. I am learning to crochet and you are one of my favorite people to watch. Also, what is that double ended crochet hook used for?
Hi Brittany, thank you for watching! That double ended hook (I have two of them) is one of the coolest tools I've ever had the pleasure of getting my hands on - you can work two-sided Tunisian crochet with it. You use two skeins at the same time, one at each end of the hook!
That sounds awesome! I have so much to learn!
Thank you!
you just saved me from throwing away a set of crochet needles. thank you very much.
We're happy we could help!
I enjoy all your videos, they are so fun and helpful. I've been making granny stars and was wondering if they could be done with a puff stitch?
HI Ashley, that's a pretty idea :) Might take a little experimenting!
THANK YOU!!!
I need to find some vintage crochet hooks
I have a set of knitting needles and some crochet hooks some of my hooks don't have any sizes on them. Some of my finer crochet hooks i use when i do my bobbin lace king.
Very helpful...as always!
thanks
Hii jayda... I love to see your all videos ... Plzzz tell me about your daily routine
Hi Priya, Thank you for watching :)
I can never get my gauge right for the cute projects like baby hats, outfits and cute little Cocoons. I made one it turned out ok, but I still have that problem ty for the video it helped me a lot!
Hi! We're so happy you found it helpful! Thank you for watching 😊
❤Thank you. 😀
Thank you for your video. I have crochet hooks that are 3.25 mm and 3.5 mm, it is impossible to see that little bit of a difference when you’re trying to measure it. Fortunately my hooks are marked, I just came here because I was curious how one would do it
Hi! We're glad it was helpful! At that size, the difference is so minimal I'm not sure it has a crazy difference on tension or stitch size. I would use the one that is most comfortable in that case 😊
@@JaydaInStitches Thank you! I have been wondering why they would even make crochet hooks with that little of a difference, as I agree with what you said. I think the minimum should be 1/2 mm in difference. I have actually seen one that stated 3.125 mm (!!)
Gracias
ty
you are awesome!
Thank you for watching! :)
I have several hooks that the sizing wore off. I am I tending on teaching crocheting. Now I can size the books. This will save me from buying hooks.
Hello Jayda..which according to you are the best crochet hooks..a set that every crocheter should have😊?
Hi Savita, I have had a chance to work with aluminum, bamboo and plastic hooks and I like them all for different reasons. We did a video on my favourite tools a while back, you might find something helpful in it :) You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/V9bzhKRyp_8/видео.html
8:48 I was wondering why some hooks have measurements that don't match the little guid e and which one would be correct? ie hook says 3.5 but fits in 3.25 hole. I love the information you gave but I'm still confused
Either either the hole on your measuring device or the hooks could be out .25mm or it's merely that they rounded up or down when labeling. .25mm is so small it makes very little difference 😊
DOES ANYONE HAVE A WAY OF PERMANENTLY MAKING A NEEDLE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO KEEP SIZING IT?? I'm sight impaired and the writing on some needles is so small I have a hard time seeing it. and others rub off. Of late I try to paint the ones that are marked with clear fingernail polish so it don't rub off. does anyone have any better ideas?
Hi Anita, have you tried permanent markers? Of possibly taping a little note on them...use a lot of tape so it doesn't come off :)
you can buy calipers cheap at DIY stores that will measure too
That's a good idea! I'll have to see if I can find some!
do you have a tutorial on how to use the cabled crochet hooks. I have one and would love to use it however I've only seen one video in someone usi ng it but not saying how (they were making a graphghan with it)
You can measure the circumference and divide by 2 as well.
Hi Melissa, if you find measuring the circumference easier, you have to divide by Pi (or 3.14) to get the diameter :)
+Jayda InStitches you are correct brain fart lol. Thanks for all the videos I love them all.
I have a request for a tutorial:
kokeshi doll.
the ones I find always puts me to sleep or I don't understand their accent.
thank you
Thank you for the suggestion! :)
you r special
good video
please start knitting
make wearable crochet things love to you
Hi Meena, thank you :)
Excellent! And LOVE the crickets chirping in the background!! M
Ahhh, summer is coming! (At least that's what they tell us LOL!)
just wrap yarn around the hook, hold your place on the yarn and spread it out on the tape/ruler and you'll know the diameter
That's the circumference. She said to measure the Diameter.
Hy i like your all videos but i love your videos
I went to buy some crochet hooks can u help me for this how can i plz thank you n take care u r soooooo cute
Hi Yasiradell, if you're looking to purchase a couple of crochet hooks and you don't have any so far, I would recommend that you pick up one that is 5.50 mm and one that is around 4.50 mm (sometimes it's 4.25mm but they're very similar). These get used most frequently with worsted weight yarn (size 4 yarn). Another good size to have is a 3.50 mm because it works very nicely with slightly thinner yarn like baby weight yarn (size 3 yarn). I hope that helps!
When using the needle size gauge do you go by the hole that the needles goes into easily or the hole where the needles goes in to the part where the tip starts? How do they measure the length of cable needles? Is it just the cable length or the length from one needle tip to the other?
Hi Tracy, you want to run your hook through the last hole which it will fit through up to the thumb depression on the handle. Cable needles are measured from tip to tip :)
TY very much@@JaydaInStitches
I sorry I am confused. Your tape measure is showing cm, but you are saying mm. Please explain. Thank you
Hi Carol, 1 cm = 10 mm. Hooks and knitting needles are so small that they are measured in mm vs cm. A mm is so small that a measuring tape does not typically show/list measurements in mm, but rather cm. If you know that something measures half a cm, then you know it's 5 mm. i.e. A typical hook (5.50 mm) would look like it's covering just a smidgen over the half a cm mark. I hope that helps 😊
jayda that afghan hook is a k
I have some with like rubbery handles with just the mm on it . How can i get the letter size of them ?
Hi Kathy, we have a handy crochet hook size conversion chart over on the TOOLS page of our website (you can find the link to our website in the description box). The links for each of our website pages are across the top of the homepage :)
can you make hook holder
Thank you for the suggestion :)
What size is a fourish
Where can we get a darn needle like yours ?
Hi Donna, that's a wool needle, they're so much easier to thread than a standard one! If you can't find any in your local craft stores, we have links on our website on the SHOP page (link is in the description box to our website) to a couple of sets of three, that you can order on line. Just scroll down the page and you'll find them :)
What confuses me is when a video says to use an I /5.5 and I have a brand new I that says 5.25 Any clue what is up with that?
Hi Kate, that's definitely a manufacturer thing. I've noticed that sizing varies from one country to another, for example, I often use a 4.25 mm hook, but the same hook made in other countries is marketed as 4.5 mm or even 4.0 mm. The fraction of a millimeter honestly won't make a gigantic difference over all in the size of a project (our personal stitch tension alone means that two crocheters could use the exact same hook and yarn and get two totally different sizes) so you could use that 5.25 hook in place of your 5.5 mm for sure.
Thanks, Jada....Kind of what I figured, and have been using them with success If it is too tight, I go up a size. Love your videos, making a sunflower granny sq afghan now. I looked for your facebook site and didn't find it.
can u crochet a doughnut #I 💙🍩
I have plastic crochet hooks that r hard to read.
The numbers or sizes can wear off over time, another good reason to be able to measure them!
Why do crochet hooks have letters on them? Thanks.
Hi Kerry, the sizing of hooks has varied from country to country and from decade to decade. Once manufactures started selling their hooks and needles to other countries, they soon learned that they had to include the local comparative sizes on their wares, or no one would understand what they were buying (since their patterns would call for a certain hook size G or possibly a 6). We don't have a universal hook and needle sizing chart (just yet) but it looks like much of the world is moving towards accepting the actual measurements (in most cases, mm) since it's a more accurate description of the hook size :)
I have some circular knitting needles from China and I don't understand the size of them
Hi Vesta, you can measure the needle part with your measuring tape, the length of plastic tubing in between is less important (this is just so you can make hats, sweaters and blankets).
Waw that alot can you give me one pls
What is your favorite hook to use?
I use my Clover Amours (ergonomic) hooks the most, they're the most comfortable for me 😊

Can you make a hamburger
That's a fun suggestion, thank you!
That's a great idea . A crocheted hamburger to use as an applique to sew onto kids hats and gloves etc😉
do you have a tutorial on how to use the cabled crochet hooks. I have one and would love to use it however I've only seen one video in someone usi ng it but not saying how (they were making a graphghan with it)
Hi Char, I have a tutorial on making a simple Tunisian stitch dishcloth. In it I use a straight afghan crochet hook (rather than a cable). The cable hook is a longer, more flexible and less cumbersome way of using a straight afghan hook. You might find it helpful :) You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/ezmIJStrlV0/видео.html
Thanks Jayda
