I just bought the Kia EV9. I didn't expect Apple Maps navigation to appear in the HUD, but it did! It seems simple, sure, but it made me slightly hopeful for deeper (next-gen) CarPlay integration haha.
I wonder how carplay will work with the HUD in select cars. Would also be nice if the front passenger can link their phone for the display directly in front of them.
It works just fine and you get same the information as with the build-in navigation. Carplay and the HUD works already with some vw brands such as skoda.
I also wonder if this new integration is limited to newer cars only or previous year models that already support CarPlay would work with the full system.

Well, GM just screwed the pooch. Since I’ve been driving a car with Apple CarPlay for the last five years, I would never buy a car without it. I’m sure there are countless others who would agree. Sorry GM. No one is gonna buy your proprietary service that will undoubtedly be a dramatic step down from what both Apple and Android users have gotten used to in their vehicles.
The screen on the right side has a privacy protection foil, so that the driver can‘t see what‘s displayed on therel. It‘s actually a (i think EU-) regulation
You are talking about a company that charged a subscription to unlock heated seats. Of course they don't want to give up control to their cars to Apple. Just like GM opted out for the same reason. They think they can create something better than Apple and charge for it (good luck with that). The list of who is on board is going to clearly show which companies are focused on best customer experience vs focused on themselves and how they can suck the most money out of their customers. I will not consider a car that does not include CarPlay (not negotiable) so a lot of companies have decided that they don't want my money.
BMW being a cheaper brand tried to charge a yearly subscription for CarPlay. Then they tried to charge a subscription for heated seats. They are still trying to create subscriptions for everything.
Oh and on screen climate controls are THE worst idea ever, anything touch controlled in a car is very dangerous, as you have to take your eyes off the road to use it. Utterly reckless idea.
I rented a new BMW that displays the CarPlay map inside the instrument cluster, above the steering wheel. So when you display something else on the screen, like Music or non-CarPlay, the map still displays.
Only new models now and no plans for existing models. It is possible but unlikely due to the connections between CarPlay and the car needed for full functionality.
Apple really proved here that they can do anything with software and expand massively on what we thought was already great, the cars available should hopefully integrate this seamlessly which will look and just be awesome. I hope BMW accept this version of carplay in the future!
Car guys will probably hate this. I like it in the center stack, but I don’t want it in the instrument cluster. I’d actually prefer we go back to analog there with a bunch of gauges.
The new 2024 Renault Scenic e-Tech will support it, which is a car I’m very excited about. I hope they’ll find a way to integrate it in the Megane e-Tech as well, since the inside of the car with the system is exactly the same build.
I'm not surprised Mazda isn't in the list, they are quite stubborn on the way you use your car going as far as removing the hardware for touchscreen and only bringing it back after many complaints.
Personally I don’t like the fully digital cockpits. Yes the Apple integration looks kinda nice. But the old dashboards with all the mechanical keys and switches, overall the well designed components look so much more premium than just having a landscape full of screens. Thats no design thats just putting glass plates into a dashboard in my opinion
I don’t like the trend with screens in cars. It’s like car manufacturers put them in there because it became cost effective and because they think consumers like lots of screens, but didn’t give any thought as to whether they serve any real purpose. I’ll take a nice digital dash and a media screen to control my music and navigation. That’s all I want/need. Let me have physical controls for my a/c, seats, windows and a few quick access car functions.
For the shared screenshots, one thing that I don’t understand is why exactly the front passenger would want to look at the weather and calendar widget lol.

Undoubtedly. They're not going to limit certain car models to people who have iPhones, especially as most of the manufacturers listed are European, where the iOS market share is smaller.
There’s still going to be a first party OS like usual. This is CarPlay. When connected, CarPlay would extend to your entire car and let you control functions. You don’t HAVE to use it though.

Automotive infotainment systems are several years into obsolescence the day you buy the car. Navigation systems are the best example of this, limiting you to one map supplier & poor map currency options. I wish Automotive manufacturers would stay out of the tech implementation business & just provide a place on the dash for 3rd parties to locate their tech.
Un popular opinion but I dislike the screen stretching over to the passenger. If the passenger wants a screen they can use their phone. I don't want another thing that can break and go wrong.
What's great is that the carplay that works on my crosstrek has a way bigger portrait screen that I like better than the wide long ones In Teslas and expensive cars

I understand the privacy thing, however I do believe that apple and auto makers should work together gathering data about the vehicle trips with mileage usage acceleration etc. to improve vehicles. From what I’ve read this is why gm is getting away from them with their ev’s because they want the data to improve performances. I could be wrong though.
This is really exciting, I'm working on my drivers license next year. Which means by the time I'm in the market for a personal vehicle there might be affordable vehicles available with the next gen carplay!
For your first car I wouldn’t recommend spending the amount of money it would take to get even the first generation of Apple CarPlay. Nothing about used cars from 2015 or later is affordable right now. Definitely a better idea to buy an actually affordable (while still safe) car especially if you’re under 25 years old. Just my two cents, people have been driving without CarPlay for a long time, you should save your money for when your a more experienced driver. Drive safe!

I just want some widgets on normal CarPlay. Don’t need climate controls which the fancy version need. Just want weather and the prettier calendar widget on the Home Screen.
I love Apple Carplay, but putting all these wiggets and extra information across the passanger side of the car just means drivers will spend more time NOT looking at the road.
