- Patrick talks about his mother began to identify as a lesbian. His father moved to India, and his mother began to live with her wealthy partner, Evelyn Spottswood, whose money came from the Dewar's whisky business. He called her Uncle Evelyn and he despised her.
He talks about his battle with Alcohol, being a Grandfather, working with Diana Rigg and his book "Blind In One Ear". He has a delicious sense of humor and such a fun interview.
He was best known for his role as the secret agent John Steed in the British television series The Avengers. Patrick died in June of 2015 at age 93.
Always loved Patrick Macnee's work. Such a class act.
Always admired Patrick MacNee. Loved him in "The Avengers" enjoyed him in a "View to a kill"
Spinal Tap
What a charming person. I can see why he was so well liked.
Always dapper looking
I can't imagine any of our current crop of "celebrities" being this frank, entertaining and refreshing.
A lovely human being and a great man !
Wow! I didn't know anything about his real life before- a really nice guy, I like him very much.
What a great guy a true British gentleman ; that we of our age should be very proud of Patrick Macnee and the most gorgeous Dianna rig ;I will miss you both, what a team♥️
Hear, Hear!
Well said. I watch them in ITV4 and wish there were more of their quality around today.
Rigg - at least spell her name correctly if you think so much of her!!!
Neil Clare........Hopefully they're both up there popping Champagne and flirting in style.
Word!
My Dad was in the Hospital a couple of years before he passed away and one of his Nurses stated how much he resembled Patrick Macnee. He was 48 when he died. The resemblance was uncanny. My Dad wasn't even British. That was back in 1971. I miss you Dad.
Thanks for sharing that! 👍🏼
_What was he, if he was not British?_
48 too soon
My condolences on your loss 🙏
Patrick was one the most honest speaking celebrities I've ever heard. He seemed legitimately to be an open book. Such a great performer as the impeccable John Steed. One of the best TV characters ever. RIP Mr. Macnee! ❤️
When he lived with his daughter in Toronto Canada, he was buying a Christmas tree where I was working north of the city.
True class on screen and off screen - a rarity these days of SUPER CELEBrities
So much more charming when he's just being himself.
One of my childhood heroes. I always had a sense that he is and was a very kind hearted man. I loved him in The Avengers with his trademark bowler hat with the amazing Dianna Right. Such a cultured and lovely man and delight to listen to. Must try to get hold of a copy of his biography.
I miss watching him on TV so much.
Just a class act. Got through life, did not complain, did not open a Go Fund Me Page. Just a few years older than me and I so miss that generation.
I always remember the story MacNee told of meeting Peter O'Toole in an elevator in the U.S. O'Toole asked him what he was up to. MacNee said he was filming 'The New Avengers' in Canada. O'Toole replied: "Patrick, you're always doing 'The Avengers'!".
Which MacNee said hurt him very much...he was a good, sensitive man who had been through a lot but did not let it ruin his life.
A generation of men who had faced death in WW 2 .
He was a Captain on MTB boats, and was the few of his maritime squadron that survived the war.
When asked about his WW2 record he said he messed around on boats.
That was typical of the modesty that such brave men men showed.
His first wife heard on the ship to shore radio his boat had been blown up & sank with no survivors. Come to find out he had such horrific bronchitis the military Dr.had put him in the hospital the same morning as the boat left so he survived on a sliver of luck.

He helped to make Europe Communist.
Eileen, what a thrill to see you interviewing Patrick Macnee. He seemed like such a wonderful person. He left such an incredible legacy with his work on The Avengers as John Steed. The Avengers is my all time favorite tv series, and my affection for Patrick Macnee runs deep. I hope he knew just how beloved he was. I really would have loved to have met him.
James Henderson from what information have you formed this opinion?
@@cliff9685 Don't feed the troll!!
@James Henderson And I guess you would know that from personal experience?
@James Henderson You are unbelievably dumb.
Wow! What a man! Good Heart.
What a charming man.
When all my school friends were playing hide and seek, I was pretending to be John Steed and my sister made to play Mrs. Peel! Lol.
This man could do no wrong to me and it's been almost 5 years since his passing...... I miss him terribly. I feel a piece of my childhood is gone forever!
We need more like him. Thank you for sharing this.
Such a great guy, I loved The Avengers. The epitome of an English gentleman.
Such a delightful man to listen to - Lovely. Thank you
Thanks so much for watching. He is a lovely man. Best to you.
The only thing missing are the clips from the show. Copyright infringement is and issue! Thanks so much for your comment. Best to you...
funny five minutes video
A very intelligent man.
Indubitably..... Bond 🇬🇧🤣.... James Bond 🇬🇧
true but its more than that he is smart and still likeable , warm character !
What a skilled interviewer you are. He is so relaxed and open which indicates how relaxed he must have felt with you. As a result this must be the best interview of him on record.
I agree. If it's not the best it is certainly way up there.
Lovely to see him. Thank you for posting this.
A great actor!
I just melted when he showed the pictures of his grandson. He was such a cutiepie, even being older than me by now.
Love him always. I feel so bad for him having a rough childhood. I can relate to him so much. He went through some pretty bad things in his life. But he came out a amazing gentleman in my opion. He is an angel in heaven now. Will always have a place in my heart for this dear man. Been a fan of his since I was a child. Love him forever.
A true gentlelman, RIP Patrick MacNee
Always the gentleman.
I met him and his wife back in the 90's.. absolute gent👍
Very beautiful brave hero of British,we saw his TV series in childhood.legend actor Patrick Macnee.Amazing to see his interview.
He was my role model as a child. What a gentleman he clearly was. 🙏🏼
Oooh. What an interview. The interviewer and Patrick McNee. One could listen to BOTH for hours. What a lady... What a gentleman.
God bless Patrick. Great guy.
May he rest in peace - Patrick Macnee (1922-2015)
4:48 This would have been either 1989 or 1990.
Macnee's mother didn't die two years earlier, she died in 1984 and she wasn't 95, she was 88 which makes me wonder how reliable his memoirs really were.
@marcus brown I'm sorry if the truth upsets you.
Still watching in 2023
What a voice!!! I wish he had done a ton more voice work.
A true class act, the best of the tines that he grew up in, alongside Michael Caine, Sean Connery & Stanley Baker.
A throwback to a world that no longer exists and possibly never really did. Children that weren’t seen as extension of intellectual property rights, alcoholism but no drama, and a Frank but not sensational account of his life and times.
And, I am willing to bet, a similar persona off screen as on.
I have to read his book!
Incredible honest man.
Great actor and a class act!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
RiP Diana Rigg
last thing she was in, All Creatures Great and Small, is now showing on UK tv
amazing lady
O I thought her last role was in Game of Thrones. I will look for that.
@@TheBaconWizard I
live in the UK and she plays the old lady who owns a spoiled dog in a remake of the old early eighties show - made after GoT.
@@andyfield7397 I live in the UK too, but i haven't watched the All-Creatures remake, and didn't realise she had been in it. thanks, i'll look for it, now.
@@TheBaconWizard channel five on a Tuesday night - had the crazy guy from The Durrells who liked shooting things in it in the Peter Davidson role
You might enjoy it for the pigs
Always liked his work specially in the Avengers.
This interview (by my calculations) would have been in 1989 ... since Patrick states a couple of times he is 67 and he was born in 1922.
RIP Patrick and Diana
They don't make men like him anymore. R.I.P. Patrick MacNee.
He worked on Super Force with us. Great Story teller. Eileen, You're a great interviewer.
I adore this actor ..im happy because my daugher 23 years is too fan.Love from France
Best interview ever
Three cheers and a tiger for the interviewer who knows how to SHUT UP and let the SUBJECT speak.
That must be 1990 There is no no date for the interview since he got married in 1988, and been married for two years it's 1990 therefore he is 68 years old at this interview.
At 4.25 he says he is 67
A truly iconic man, and what a wonderful career, I particularly loved the episode of the New Avengers where he unwittingly enters a proper car race in his terribly customised Jaguar
His chum at school who likewise fell for acting because of the little drama plays it used to put on? _Christopher Lee_
Patrick, once told me a story about when Lorne Greene and he used to act on stage in Toronto, I do not remember the name of the troupe, he told me this around 1988.... Every time they would get a 'pittance' of pay, back then, Lorne would try to cajole Patrick into giving some of Pat's $ to him, to invest in a fledgling company. Patrick would always, politely, decline. Patrick said, to me, that when Lorne went off to Hollywood, for that "silly Bonawnza thing"(trying to get his accent) that Lorne was doing 'quite well'! "You see, Allen, that fledgling company was/is...........................................I.B.M. ! Lovely man, was Patrick Macnee! 🪐🌠
I remember him in the original (Lorne Greene) series of Battlestar Gallactica.
This is an interview from 1990
he is great.
Pure class
The first man I had a huge crush on 😊
i like him a lot put i feel sorry for him for a mother like this - this would terrify me since i had the best mother a rascal can get. Great chap.
Firstly I was an Avengers fanatic as a child so I guess Mr Macnee is a hero of mine and, as the comments suggest, he seemed a really sweet man in this interview. But was that really him? Has he been that unerringly sweet through three marriages?
He was separated by work reasons from his first wife and drifted into a relationship with another woman whom he subsequently married. He said that he very much regretted allowing that to happen. His second wife was simply not compatible but he found happiness with his third. He wasn't a womaniser per sae.
Fascinating childhood and normal despite crazy situation
Adorable grandbaby.
The quintessential Englishman.
A shame he did not talk about WW II. He was a combat veteran, British PT torpedo boats. He came down with Bronchitis & while in hospital his boat was sunk in combat all hands lost. He was a second Lieutenant in command I believe, check Wikipedia This was during D-Day .
One of Stalin's useful idiots.
Just to think, if he hadn’t been sick, we would have lost him on D-Day and would never have had the pleasure of seeing him in the Avengers. I think I read that he felt guilty for not being with his fellow military men that day.
Beautiful soul
The epitome of a distinguished Gentleman.
3:33 "Between the age of 8 and 17 is the highest point of sexuality".
Is this guy related to Jimmy Saville?
said his mother died at 52 then later @ 95 Im confused
His mother's lesbian partner died at 52.
Eileen, when was this program filmed?
What a wonderful Man, we need more like him.
A highly intelligent man. A product of his upbringing, which was crooked. No religious foundation. Predictable ending.
He went to school with Christopher Lee.
Nice.
Why no sound?
Wow
Four minutes in and I'm thinking, "fucking hell, that's a life!!!"
Pure class. Wow 80 a day.snorting and drinking himself to death. Some things don't change
The father of the Spinal Tap bass guitarist. Inherited genius.
❤🙏🏾❤️
By your command imperious leader!
He certainly would not have been out of place on Downton Abbey. Perhaps in a different time line he did!
top guy
They don’t make them like that anymore.
So he doesn’t drink, so why the title.
He drank heavily in his earlier life. He explains in his other book the avengers and me.
i am gender dysphoria, never married, only if i ever did it would be to patrick macnee
I am a heterosexual man and understanding what you are saying... It would be between Patrick and Anthony Valentine!
@@eddiehoare3488 I am also heterosexual although necrophilia has no appeal to me.
@Brad 1980 one word for you armchair philosopher BIGGOT!
He'd probably get in trouble today for that "Nothing indecent -- no sodomy" line.
no sound
Oops...my bad... that was Gene Barry...
That kids prolly 30 now lol
PROBABLY.......its not hard
Drawing on personal experiences of a lezzo mum and private school to say that his generation were all raised perverts is out of order. Most people were absolutely raised to be hetero family oriented, and I dare say still are. Pat had a weird early life, so ....
What? He had a lesbian mother? How?....?
Yes he did. His father was a drunk too
...'who' ?
Cet homme n'a vraiment pas eu de chance dans son enfance. Quel désastre l'homosexualité et l'égoïsme des adultes !
En tous cas, le vice n' a pas eu l'air d'avoir déteint sur lui. DIEU VEILLE 🌿
I never knew he was a drunk
