So this song is about Anthony Kiedis (the lead singer) struggle with addiction. Under the bridge is a literal reference to his nights spent under bridges and in other unsavory places doing drugs while his wife sat at home worrying. There's another YT channel called Professor Of Rock. He recently did an in depth explanation of the background of this song. Worth a watch for sure.

There's lots of space in this song. It is deceptively simple. The lead singers passion in his delivery and the instrumation are clear and pristine.

It's a roller-coaster of emotions for me, but ultimately soothing and inspirational. This song came out when I was in 9th grade. New school, tough home life, no friends..this music was my companion. 🥰

Before MTV, there was The Midnight Special , American Bandstand, all of the late night shows plus several others that I can't remember. Thats how we heard them other than radio.

I remember watching this on MTV in the early 90's. This was one of my favorite songs at the time, I was in junior high school, I want to say 1992? Anyway, memory lane!

  • @hughmoore3251
    @hughmoore3251 2 года назад +5

This was not their usual style. This was based on a poem the lead singer wrote about his ultimate regrets about shooting up under a bridge while his wife (girlfriend?) was at home... His band mates saw the poem, recognized the potential, and talked him into letting them (together) turn it into a song.
Edit : Someone else here already summed it up better...

This song was released in 1991. Hard to believe that was 31 years ago! Seems like yesterday! They have some great songs, but this, in my opinion, is their best track. We had music variety shows like American Bandstand (1952-89), Soul Train (1971-2006), and Midnight Special (1972-1981). MTV aired for the first time in August of 1981, and I believe MTV was the show that began the popular music videos. Check out their "Aeroplane". It's a great song! Thanks for the reaction! ;-)

Yeah, it’s definitely hard to wrap your head around the fact this song is over 30 years old now. While I’ve enjoyed pretty much their entire catalog it wouldn’t be until Californication came out that one would even come close to this song for me.

Under the Bridge was early 90's, and it took the world by storm. It was up there with Nirvana and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam for dominating the airwaves. MTV, radio, it was constant.
And it's about addiction. He used to go under a bridge to buy heroin and use it. It's a song of pain.
Re: Other songs - They are known also for doing Funk. Flat out, full bore Funk. If you want a good look at that part of their music, arguably one of the greatest is 'If You Have to Ask' off the album that Under the Bridge came from. BloodSugarSexMagick.
Their whole album 'One Hot Minute' was written in a haunted house, and colored by their experiences there. And it's brilliant.

This song is about Anthony's (lead singer) heroin addiction. He used to buy heroin under a specific bridge in LA. Fans have speculated what bridge exactly. He was clean when he wrote/recorded this song in 1990/1991 but would go on to struggle with his addictions until around 2000 (and has now been clean since).
Back in the day we watched music videos on MTV. By the time this song came out music videos were very common. Pretty much all singles had a music video with it at this point.
RHCP have a variety of different songs. They started out in the early 90s with a lot of funk influences and with Anthony mostly rapping. Their sound has evolved over time and their early stuff is vastly different from what they put out today, but they still retain a very recognizable Chili Pepper sound.
What makes RHCP particularly special to me is that the bond between the members has always been very strong. The original members were all best friends in high school. The lineup has altered since due to members passing away (RIP HILLEL) and/or leaving/returning. In my person opinion RHCP with John Frusciante (guitar) is their sweet spot.
    Great reaction as always!

There were a few late night shows in the few years prior to MTV that aired videos maybe one night a week on local or public stations, but they were pretty low budget and didn't air alot of diverse content. Otherwise it was on variety shows or TV specials that youd see any artist play, mostly ones already well established or the latest ones with a top charting song on radio. When MTV came out in '81, every band and musical artist began promoting their work through videos. As I recall, MTV wasn't available without a specific cable subscription where I live here in Canada. Thankfully we got MuchMusic shortly afterwards, 3 years after MTV launched. Music videos were a much bigger deal then than they are today, because you couldn't just bring it up on RUclips and watch anything at any time you wanted. You needed to have VCR to record them and you never quite knew just what you might see or when.

Mtv and RHCP were besties, these were the 90-ies, music and music videos kept me from not getting into trouble as a teenager. The whole album is epic, it was back in the day too, it exploded and absolutely made them gods of music as they were so open about so many many issues and topics. Peppers any day!! :-) This was one of the slower ballads, they have very cool other type of songs like Californication, Blood Sugar Magic, By the way, Zephire song, Fortune faded, Give it away, and they have a wonderful version of Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder's original) too. so many many great songs, still a great band!!

I don't remember watching this video when it first came out, but I do enjoy this song! I first heard about the band because Flea (the bassist) was in Back to the Future. I have even sang this song at karaoke.
The first music video I ever saw was "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson. I think I was in 8th grade and I was at a classmate's birthday party. That would have been during the '83-'84 school year.

Around the time this came out MTV and VH1 were well established already and it was just the norm for alot of people to watch these channels like literally all day. The videos were in rotation most of the time. Then "shows" slowly began replacing all the video play. 😔 Videos were not usually just played on television anywhere other than the music channels.

Fortunately, before MTV we didn't have to suffer through videos. We had many, many music shows that the groups performed on. That kept us satisfied until they went on tour. Music videos ruined the whole concept of music itself IMHO.... To me it has always been the same aspect as reading a book before you see the movie. Somehow the movie doesn't live up to the situation and characters you imagined them to be. I've just always believed that each individual person interprets and relates to music as it applies to their situation. Stamping that music with an image projected by someone else makes you remember that image instead of the one you've already learned for yourself. Glad you two are here ~ thank you for the reaction! 🦋

I was born in 74 so I remember the launch and was watching mtv when it launched in 81... this song here was like the height of mtv (early 90s)before it went all stupid shows.
before mtv there was a few shows here and there that had kinda vids... more like video promos than vids... other than that most music was on shows like bandstand or dick clark etc... soul train was one more good one...
but mostly before mtv... you didn't watch much... you listened to AM/FM... top40 count downs etc...
