Very true. She did it right after a show in the hallway. They asked her to sing it to do the video and her voice was already hoarse from singing but she pulled it off in 1 take !

@@hopelancaster3385 I'm not where you read this.... Haley first performed "Creep" in Lyon France. Haley wasn't the first singer for PMJ to do this cover, they had done this song before w/ another singer. However, Haley's performance in Lyon convinced Scott to do something PMJ had never done before, re-record one of their covers with a different singer.
The day of recording was a day between shows, they recorded it in Switzerland. Scott actually saw the comet millions across Europe saw on the day they recorded it *Haley's Comet?* :P (he tweeted it, so it's on record).
This was Haley's first ever experience touring in Europe after Idol, she was a little under the weather the day they went in studio to record "Creep", one of three videos they recorded that day (All About That Bass was also recorded this session).
Haley did the video in one take, she was a little ill, so she thought it wasn't as good as it can be, but Scott assured her it was perfect.
He tells the tale every time he guests at one of Haley's show. He even DM'd me to confirm some things for his book, like when Haley performed it for the first time
Here's Haley's first performance in Lyon, days before they would record the video in Zurich, what I especially love is no one in the audience knew who Haley was at the time, noticed the stunned silence erupting at the end. Great crowd reaction

By that you mean uses someone else's popularity talent and video content and then sings over it to make herself look good and then uses that to sell her own product? Some people would call that stealing.

LOVE Haley Reinhart. Her cover of Seven Nation Army with PMJ is fantastic too. I'll never understand why she isn't a huge celebrity.
This is the reason some amazing talent will never hit fame. One question.
Man in a suit: "So what are you willing to do for fame."
Sad thing is, is that less talented people are willing to compromise themselves more for fame and the industry then doctors the production. TV, Acting, Movies etc.
The only reason why Haley isn't a mega-celebrity is that she refuses to sign a record deal with a big major record label although they have all been trying to sign her for years. So the end result is she is criminally underexposed.

I think it is because this is music to listen to. Popular music, songs that become huge hits, are music to SING to.

Tara Simon, You are Beautiful ! Just my opinion, but that make-up and hair style is perfect for you. Haley Reinhart is an unbelievably talented singer and she sings with her whole body and soul. I'm always amazed at her note choices every time that I hear sing. Also, The PMJ music arrangement is Outstanding !

I see this video is brand new. Hopefully this isn't the first of Haley's music you've heard. As a coach, I'm sure you know what you're talking about. I've had the privilege to hear Haley live, and in fact, she sang this song six foot from me. I was close enough to touch the stage for the entire show. In my humble opinion, Haley is the #1 most talented active vocalist. Forget all these autotune squirrels out there, her entire set was perfect. And on top of all this, she is the most genuine, sweetest performer I have ever met. And she brings to the stage that sultry, steaming presence that you see in this video. Thanks for your critique, but with her music you will never find anything negative to report. 🌹

The best part about this performance is that she has SO much control over her voice, she is in control over every breath, every note, every voice crack, just very impressive mastery over her instrument, but at the same time makes it seem effortless and natural. And I loved watching you watch it, and when you were like, "wow this is amazing, yes girl" in the first couple minutes, I was like, oh just wait till the end when she takes. it. to. church.
Awesome to see a vocal coach review a performance of hers! Haley is absolutely phenomenal, probably one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. Oh and live, shes even better! Her prerecorded releases are one thing but man ... her live renditions are on a completely different level, she throws in little vocal surprises in almost every song she performs.

PMJ just did a cover of U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For in the soul/gospel style that is amazing, as well. A reaction would be so nice. Of course, PMJ with Haley singing Seven Nation's Army is very cool.

I believe PMJ were performing this song on a European tour. On a day off performing they recorded this is in one take.
I'm sure there is a PhD in it for someone who breaks all of this performance down. Haley Rheinhart is a master of her craft.
May I suggest a video on Diana Ankudinova, a 15 year old with a unique contralto voice with beautiful tone. Either Wicked Game, Derniere Danse or Rechenka. i would love to hear an experts opinion on her. I'm dying to learn what is going on with that voice.

Ms. Simon? Thanks so much for reviewing this. I've had the privilege (once) of seeing, and hearing, these folks in concert. Here's the thing? I'm somebody who can't sing well -- but has perfect pitch. I generally don't go to live concerts because, for the most part, they're like an exercise in listening to fingernails scratching on a blackboard. Not with these folks. They're that good. I can go to their concerts and just revel in what I'm hearing. I envy you your objectivity, but I have to ask: Have you ever listened to an otherwise amazing performance, heard an off note and thought, "Ouch!?" LOL! Well, that's me.
(Suggestion? Look at PMJ's version of "All About That Bass." The lead singer on that is the guy I heard sing, "Creep." I hung around for an hour just to say, "Thanks," and to shake the guy's hand. I love how much you love music.

Could you please react to Bennie and the Jets - Postmodern Jukebox Ft. Aubrey Logan? All the techniques you broke down in Haley Reinharts creep helped big time, but there’s some technical things Aubrey does in Bennie and the Jets that I cannot figure out.

Haley is really good at acting while singing, it makes her stand out from the pack, when you have a line like "you float like a feather" you work the alliteration, you make the vocal float like its a feather too.

@William Davis I figured as much. Major labels also have a nasty habit of signing performers just to get them on contract and then shelve them so they don't interfere with the popularity of whatever radio acts they're trying to promote, also as you suggested, controlling them as puppets to make top profits.
Maybe true, I hadn't heard of her, but her 'Creep' has 76 million views!

Haley was not ill at the time. She’s clarified this in other comment sections and there is a video out there with her, PMJ & Casey talking about the making of this video. She was tired from touring & recording 2 songs with PMJ earlier. This was the first & only take. Haley is an incredible singer. But it seems from the tone of her clarification that she’s not pleased with this rumor that she was sick continuing to circulate

@@ronniejohnson3019 she was on American Idol twice! The first time she didn't even get past auditions and the second time she made it to Top 3 before being voted off. I don't know why her talent isn't as obvious to everyone else.

My favorite PMJ performance of hers is still Mad World with Puddles, the clown with the golden voice. They sound so good together and appear to be having a lot of fun doing it. It will put a smile on your face.

I love both PMJ and Haley Reinhart... she has such a distinctive voice and style. I've always thought she should have won the season of "American Idol" she was on.
Those shows are highly produced. The people that win are the ones they choose ahead of time. Tara would be able to tell you...but she can’t because she’s contractually obligated not to.

This video is basically a live studio recording, and this was the first take.
Haley is easily one of the best musicians PMJ has worked with in the *many* years they've been a thing. The way she's able to growl and wail without making her voice sound as if it's detrimental is incredible, as trying that for myself would throw my larynx all out of whack and I'd end up clawing it off of the ceiling. To reach into the height of her range to make some of those runs without having to move into head while simultaneously not stretching her voice too thin is another ridiculous talent of hers and I absolutely applaud her for that. I also love how much it showed how you were completely digging that cover.
You should react to Jeremy Jordan singing "Ben's Birthday Medley." It's hilarious and entertaining and also *incredibly* well done once you see how some of the songs go together, not to mention he freaking kills it!

Love your style here: the breaking down of vocal technique, giving it structure, and tying results to specific skills one builds on by practice. And the demos you do show not only the points you make, but also that you have the chops/credentials from which to critique. But a suggestion: your mic here is falling way short of the task. It sounds worse than AM radio - tinny, with all lows dropped. I realize part of the audio tone this is from recording amid flat walls and no dampening. But mostly, really, it's the cheap mic. For $100 you can get something 100 times better. And your voice (and videos) deserve it. Go splurge. (And get more followers / customers as a result.)
