  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Post Modern Jukebox | Creep | Haley | Ken Tamplin
Record companies don’t always get it right and in the case of Haley Reinhart, that was definitely the case.
Haley competed on season 10 of American Idol finishing at a respectable third place and receiving a record deal with Interscope. She released her debut album under the label and it received critical acclaim.
The label ended up dropping her shortly after due to management changes but Haley didn’t let that stop her. She continued to make her own music and in 2015 she rose to prominence with her collaboration with Postmodern Jukebox for her jazz cover of “Creep”.
The song made it to the Billboard Jazz Digital Songs chart and remained there for 58 consecutive weeks. She followed that up with a cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” which reached number 16 on the Adult Contemporary chart and went on to be certified platinum.
Haley has continued to release multiple Billboard charting singles and toured in support of her albums. She also is soon to make her acting debut on a Netflix film called We Can Be Heroes.
Today I’ll be reacting to my first look at her infamous “Creep” cover which has garnered over 70 million views. I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Make sure to tell me what you thought!

@@kentamplin This was recorded during Postmodern Jukebox's first European tour at a studio in Zurich on a day off. They also recorded a group version of "All About That Bass" that features Haley, Casey Abrams, Morgan James, and Ariana Savalas.
PMJ had recorded both of those songs previously with different artists. It was a good call to rerecord them (probably to keep to the release schedule) because they are now the top 2 videos on their channel in terms of views.
PMJ performed "Creep" on the short-lived Josh Wolf show. Haley was running late to it because she got caught in LA traffic. Josh later told Haley in a podcast that she and Jewell were the only singers who didn't lip synch on his show. "Creep" on JWS: ruclips.net/video/JssetZXWLJs/видео.html

@@kentamplin Yeah, not true. Haley just joined PMJ in Berlin on their European Tour (her first time touring post Idol), she wasn't performing w/ anyone else. They recorded Creep, All About That Bass and one other song on their day off in Zurich, Switzerland, she was under the weather, this performance was purportedly a one take. Scott tells the story when he guests w/ Haley that Haley wanted to do another take, but Scott said that was the one.
Scott had the idea to re-record "Creep" with Haley based on her performance of it for the first time in Lyon, France. At the time she had only recorded one song w/ PMJ ("Habits") but wanted to do another song for the show, she requested to sing their arrangement of Creep.... Here's the video that convinced Scott...(*Note* this was before the 70 million view video, notice how silent the audience is throughout, bursting into applause at the end. This was Haley's first time performing it: ruclips.net/video/4J7AGfLN67g/видео.html
Haley meeting with PMJ rocketed both of them into the stratosphere w/ "Creep". Another fun fact, this was the first time Scott Bradlee, PMJ's founder (piano player), re-recorded an arrangement he'd already recorded w/ another singer.
I have live Haley performances since 2012 on my channel if you want to hear her live.
Here's my video from Haley's first appearance at the Troubadour in 2015, where Scott Bradlee tells the "Creep" story... ruclips.net/video/aD-yP_WmzaQ/видео.html

I first heard this at my brother-in-law's wedding reception. There was a whole playlist of PMJ that played softly in the background while everyone ate, before the DJ kicked the dancing off. It gave the whole affair the feel of an upscale cocktail party, and I recognized the lyrics to All About That Bass and was like 'WTF?!" So this was the second song, and I made my husband go up and ask the DJ what this was. After that, we were fans! Love this!

I love Haley and I love PMJ. I think her biggest problem is that she, herself, doesn't know what she wants to sing. Her 3 albums are all over the place. I have loved her since Idol, but it's hard to develop a new, bigger fan base when you can't be categorized. I kinda like not knowing what you're gonna get next, but not many feel that way.

@@kentamplin I think that record company put her in a pop hole and that hid her real talent. I saw the same thing with Janet Devlin who sounded very uncomfortable and lost on her records after the X-factor, her style couldn't shine through the mainstream pop.

    • @vidpie
      @vidpie 4 года назад +7

Haley knew she might only get one chance to produce an album and exerted herself. The NYT called her debut album "convincing and fresh." The LA Times described it as "a gamble" and noted "carefully crafted pop hits are traded in for depth... There are no disposable pop beats... Instead piano lines, horns and bright Motown-inspired dance-pop move the disc."
The good thing is she had co-writing credit on 13 of the 14 songs. They didn't get radio play, but they did generate royalties from being used in commercials, a movie, and as piped music. That was enough for her music publisher to back the production of her second album.
Her third album was released through Concord Music Group. It was mostly covers from the mid-to-late 1960s recorded using vintage instruments and tape. It's something of an homage to the repertoire of her parents' band and she included them in the making of it.
Her 4th album came out last year and was a completely independent production. Yes, it exhibits a lot of variety within its 13 songs. "Honey there's the door" is the song that would likely become a pop hit if it had exposure.

Hi Ken, really enjoyed your review of this video. I've been a long time follower of Haley's since her Idol season and I'd like to address your thoughts about the music business. To me, every artist has their own path to follow. The 'dream', the template to any outsider is to 'sign a major deal', most people not understanding that the advance artists get was for all intents and purposes a loan to kick start their career w/ the label. That's where Haley was wounded for quite a while after Insterscope until she met up w/ PMJ. They had given her an advance to put together a band, readied to tour and she was suddenly dropped, no opportunity to build her brand, promote her debut album, let alone to pay back their advance. She "disappeared" for a couple years until PMJ.
Having witnessed Haley's 'Journey' since Idol, I couldn't help but see it in the context of Campbell's "Hero's Journey". Although it was a terrible thing at the time, being unceremoniously released w/ a debt and having to realize if she was going to 'make it' it'd have to be by her own doing. I think the Interscope situation HAD to happen in her tale, it was the 'inciting' moment, the 'call to arms' in Haley's Hero's Journey, How badly do you really want this?
Yes, Interscope treated her poorly, but to be honest, the Music Industry template is broken and really helps the business more than the artist. She'd be just feeding into the industry and not going out and learning who she really is as an artist. In 2012, it was the worst thing to happen to her, in hindsight, it was actually the best thing that could've happened to her. It forced her to find her own voice, find her confidence and forced her to take control of her career.
We in the fan base had a nick name for Haley, in reference to Buffy, we called her "The Slayer", over coming the odds against her. She continues that tale with every accomplishment, a true "Hero's Journey"
Thanks for the great revew and reaction, this still gives me goosebumps even five years later, Cheers!

Thanks for sharing that with us, Haley's Tusk!

    • @theblackdog2399
      @theblackdog2399 4 года назад

@Haleystusk, With all due disrespect, Mr. Tusk, your sob story is simply not true at all. Haley never had to repay back any advances or anything else back to Interscope, for that matter. As Interscope failed to keep their end of the bargain.
In fact, because Interscope was unable to fulfill their end of the bargain, they also gave Haley all the rights to her music at the same time. Indeed, Interscope tried to let Haley go as gently as they possibly could. You obviously have been watching too many 70s soap operas.
Furthermore, when Haley was released by Interscope it was part of a belt tightening move by the company, as Haley was one of 65 music artists all trimmed simultaneously from Interscope’s roster of music artists at the same time. As Haley wasn’t released cause her album wasn’t viable or cause she was failing. She was released cause when Jimmy Iovine left Interscope for Apple Music, Interscope didn’t have any cash remaining to operate their business. Thus, Interscope had to make the tough decision to trim their roster of music artists.
Now had Haley had any guidance subsequent to Interscope, she could have easily gotten re-signed to another record label almost immediately, but at that time, Haley was still more or less a kid. As she didn’t have the first clue about the music industry. Nonetheless, after Interscope she did a lot of overseas gigs.
Then she began booking some of her own gigs over here in the USA. However, she soon found out the hard way that she still had to give up a share of the proceeds back to her management company anyway. Once she found that out, she started auditioning for various acting roles and did far fewer singing gigs until her management deal finally ended in mid 2014. As her former management company was the same management company that Phillip Phillips sued. Once her contract ended with them, she then started focusing on her singing career again and started booking her own gigs again until she hooked up with PMJ and made PMJ a viral sensation and Scott Bradlee a millionaire.
Again, Haley was released by Interscope, but she wasn’t released with any debt as you ignorantly are assuming. If she had owed Interscope a debt, she never would have been able to afford to lay low until her management deal with her former management company ended in mid 2014. Give me a break. Not to mention that it was Interscope that was unable to fulfill their end of the bargain, not Haley Reinhart.
Meanwhile, getting cut by a record label isn’t the end of the world as you always try to portray it as being. As most music artists have been cut by record labels on numerous occasions. That’s just the nature of the business.
The thing about the music business is exposure, exposure, exposure. Cause without exposure, you are on the fast track to nowhere. Indeed, because of the fear of failure, Haley has been on the fast track to nowhere forever.
Then someday in the not too distant future, she will inevitably start losing her looks and when that inevitability begins to happen, suddenly the gigs are going to progressively get harder and harder to get, until eventually she has to get a real job like everyone else to make ends meet. That’s when she is going to look back on her life and reflect on the stupid decisions she made in her youth.
Music artists are like professional athletes in that they only have a short window of opportunity in which to achieve financial security and financial independence. Cause once it’s over, it’s over.

I don't think the label knows how to market her, as it's not very common for someone like Haley to come around and even less common to make it big. She absolutely nailed this. Ken, you are absolutely right about the label. It is wrong in so many levels of how the new upcoming artists are treated these days. It's all about sales, they care about only one thing: How to milk out every cent then dispose of whats left.

Anyway, still love your channel and your smiles :)

Barbie Girls as 50's doo-wop rock just works. They've done Sweet Child o' Mine as a New Orleans dirge. Yo Diggity and Ganstas Paradise as jazzy songs you'd expect from period pieces that take place in smoke filled night clubs. There's a TON of cross genre mixing of music on their channel, and so much of it is amazing. Not all of it is to *my* taste, but it's still well done.

  • @bradhuskers

Have you ever reacted to elvis presley?
The reason I ask is because elvis's voice was chameleon. It literally changed 5 times in his very very brief career.
50's elvis was a raw punk rocker. The fusion of white country and bluegrass with black blues. Then, in 1960, he's otherworldly on the studio recording of "it's now or never"
The velvet tone of "can't help falling in love".
The falsetto of elvis is so effortless and natural. Then in the late 60"s he covers Bob Dylan's "tomorrow is a long time" and turns it into a six minute folk masterpiece!
Then the soul of "if I can dream" live in 1968.
Then the gritty raw soul of the 69 Memphis sessions.
In 1970, live on stage, he takes :"bridge over troubled water" to heights paul simon never even thought about!
Then in 71 and 72, his voice gets mellow on "always on my mind"
In 1975, his studio recording of "green green grass of home" is a masterpiece.
There's much more to dissect here.
Like 1966's studio recording of "you'll never walk alone"
    A towering achievement!
I'd love to hear you react to the changing and otherworldly voice of elvis presley.
I don't recall anyone changing as much in so little time.
    Do you?

She's now with Anthem. I believe still. Canadian record label that's run by the members of Rush, to my knowledge. She signed with them a year or two after Interscope dropped them. Their loss. In today's market, big top down corporate labels suffer.

Ole was Haley's music publisher and backed her second album. Concord produced her third. Ole changed its name to Anthem last year. They credit themselves for "upstreaming" a handful of artists including Haley from their "Red Dot" label. Her fourth album was released on Reinhart Records.
Some folks at ole may have helped out by hooking her up with a new producer or two and possibly providing guidance.
Rush essentially retired and ole took possession of their assets.
      Press release:
June 5, 2019: "Today, ole Media Management, one of the world’s leading independent music and entertainment content and services companies, announces the change of its name to Anthem Entertainment, effective immediately.
...As part of the acquisition of the Rush masters and publishing in 2015, the company acquired The Anthem Entertainment Group..."

There's more to the story of why Haley didn't become a house hold name. But you got it right. They signed her, then the label restructured later. But when they 1st signed her they tried to change her style of what made her so popular in the 1st place. She sang rock, blues, jazz and pop songs on Idol that were all up her alley. But I think the bigger problem was her own music she was either writing along with someone or that someone else wrote for her on that 1st album were not what fans and new listeners who heard of about her expected from her. For me I still think she could choose or write songs that reflects what she does so well with her talented voice. I think she doesn't let loose with her own writing or maybe her writing isn't up to speed with her talented voice. I loved most all her performances and song choices on Idol and PMJ but not so much on her own.

    • @vidpie
      @vidpie 2 года назад

Haley wanted a hand in writing her own music, and she has cowriting credit on 13/14 songs on her album (deluxe version). I do wish though her initial songwriting experience had been less industrial.
LARRY LONDON: “How did you come up with the songs on your debut album, because that’s a big decision? 'This is my first album out there, songwriters write 100’s of songs, I got to pick 13', how did you choose those?"
HALEY REINHART: “I was speed dating with these producers writing daily. We would write a song, walk in to the studio, and record it…done. We did 30 of those in not even three months and everybody liked the material. It was quite easy to pick which ones.
It was like, for the last song, ‘I only have room for one more’. That is kind of the tossing and turning golden problem, so I am really lucky that is the way it worked out”.
LARRY LONDON: “You had sung jazz most of your life and there you are on a pop TV show and you are being judged week after week in front of millions of people [weekly average TV Audience 30 million]. I cannot imagine the pressure”.
HALEY REINHART: “There is a lot of pressure. Thankfully, for me, live performing has always been a huge part of my life, my parents being in a band together. I grew up on classic rock, and soul, and jazz so I came into the show, and got to put a mesh of those three things into the songs I chose. So at least I was doing what I wanted to do."
LARRY LONDON: "...Besides all that great stuff what else has happened that is different about you and your outlook on music than it was before the show?”
HALEY REINHART: "As much as I knew who I was before, the show really made me bring that out, and know who I am. Even though I love all these different genres that I have grown up with it, it was a matter of taking all these things and making them all have a complete marriage between them. And now I feel like I have my own sound. I cannot put a stamp or a name on it, but it is definitely a retro yet modern sound."
The New York Times called Haley's debut album "convincing and fresh" and described it as "a taut album full of meaty, thickly arranged pop-soul" with "songs (that) hark back to the 1960s and ’70s, when Motown girl groups were ceding ground to soul-driven rock. It’s singers’ territory that shows off both the smooth power of Ms. Reinhart’s voice and its engine-revving churn."
Haley recently conveyed in a podcast interview that before she was dropped the label wanted to release an Adele-like song as the second single and she wanted to release an Amy Winehouse-like song that was more her. We can assume the songs in question are "Undone" and "Oh My."
Both were called out on a sticker on the CD. Haley's never embraced performing "Undone," a song about a person crushed by heartbreak. Which brings up something that affects her songwriting. Limits it in a way. She has stated she wants to put positive messages out into the world. To offer an escape. She wants to make people feel good and lift them up.
So she's not likely to write songs that convey pain, suffering, anger, outrage. That's just not her. But those are powerful emotions and when combined with her voice could be the foundation of memorable songs.

Post-Modern Jukebox is really AWESOME! Not the case of this song but It's crazy that I've learned a lot of the 2010s pop songs and radio hits through them as I don't listen to radio at all but then when I was on a store or Uber I would hear the original tune over their sound system and think "WOW! That's where it came from!" and there are some unbelieveable renditions from Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj and other crazy choices. Scott Bradlee, the piano player/arranger and mind behind the scenes is really bold and I love that.

Haley, like Clare Torry with "The Great Gig in the Sky," could not possibly have bettered this single-take performance. Of all of the songs that I, as a professional musician, have listened to over and over, these two songs by these two artists I have binged on the most. I only wish that there had been a video of Torry doing "Gig."
