_It doesn't have to think and then put the power, it's just putting the power back there from the get go_ - great description of LOCK mode in many modern, clutch-based awd systems.
Kia: 11:1 crawl ratio Wet Dual Clutch 8 speed VW Atlas: 20:1 crawl ratio, traditional automatic 8 speed. The Volkswagen combined with Haldex 5 could be one of the most capable crossovers that doesn’t have a rear twin clutch differential. You just have to give it more ground clearance. I’m 2 minutes into watching, but I know which one will do better 😃.
10:18 the Ridgeline has a 20:1 crawl ratio with twin clutch rear differential. The Atlas does it next best (2nd least violence). The Outback XT is 3rd. The Sorento is last and incredibly violent. Man, I love your videos 😃
Hey Ryan, great video as usual. Just wanted to comment that I do enjoy your tandem test drive videos with Karleena. You make an awesome team and great content to watch. Thank you! Subscriber and fan, from Sydney, Australia
I prefer Sorento inside and outside! Plus in my country it has terrain modes 😊 I test drove it this week on 19 inch wheels and was amazing. Now I just have to wait until they ship with the new badge cause I like it better.
Kia has nicer interior minus the 2 flat screens stuck on front of molded cluster area, horrible afterthought looking idea, either have cluster in it, or make flat dash for flat cluster
Interesting comparison, folks. As the owner of a KIA ( 2018 Sorento) and a VW (2018 GTI) I really don't have a dog in this fight. At least as far as the brands are concerned. In any event, if the sort of off-roading represented by the Washington Overland Trail was a major priority neither of the vehicles would be my choice. And if forced to undertake the mission I'd certainly replace the All Season tires with more appropriate rubber on either one. So let's be frank. The Sorento and the Cross Sport are each 21st century versions of family station wagons for Americans who have abandoned both wagons and minivans. Serious off-roading is the mission of few midsize SUVs. It's certainly fair to test the Sorento and Cross Sport marketing-base off-road pretensions but for the vast majority of customers neither will be subjected to challenges more severe than inclement weather on paved roads and occasional forays on well traveled dirt or gravel. Want to be totally confident in traversing the Overland Trail? Get a trail-rated Wrangler, a Bronco, or a Defender. That's not to say, of course, that your review was inappropriate. But as my Daddy used to say, "When you see dogs dancing you don't ask how well they do it. It's amazing that they do it at all."
I can’t wait for you to get your hands on the new Ford Bronco Bandlands with Sasquatch package! Side note I have this exact trim and color option Kia Sorento XLine. I love it for on road everyday use which it’s clearly more suited for. I wish Kia had of gave United States version a dedicated off-road mode like they do in their foreign markets. But I guess they figured most Americans wouldn’t ever take the Sorento off road anyway 😆. Great video,I was really looking forward to this one.
Hello. I have seen some of your Kia Sorento reviews and on some of them, you claim that the suspension is on the stiff side (hybrid review) , on some others you claim that it's on the soft side... Which one is it?
The Sorento's interior is more premium. Kia did a great job at giving contrast in the interior by giving it camel brown leather and gray imitation wood, give the interior material and color diversity.
VW has plenty of off road experience with the legendary Touareg. The Atlas definitely doesn't have the same great 4WD system as the Touareg but they still got it.
Ryan, you say the N American Sorento's don't get off road but the Canadian models get mud and sand as well as the snow mode you tested. Obviously we don't have anyone up here that's tested it as well as you.
So Truck King just did an off road review of the Canadian X Line, which is more of a mid range model and the off road settings did seem to have more effect when they tried the off camber test
I am a big VW fan and I do like the Kia also, I love their vents because in cold climates, you really want those down pointing vents to warm up your lower body. I also LOVE the bottom hinged gas pedal, which VW used to have and the Passat is the last one to have that... really disappointed that VW and AUDI gave it up, and Toyota and Kia picked it up, smart decision for the latter. We had a Sorento 2020 as a loaner in California for a week and we really liked it, my wife especially liked the driving position and the bottom hinged gad pedal since she is shorter. We were going to trade our Tiguan for the Sorento until I found out the Kia has a DSG, which to me is a hard NO in anything larger than a GTI.
Happy 4th of July over there! I really like so much your dedicated dive into the tech of cars to use a bit off the shopping mall parking lanes. And when you are two there in the episodes, the added dialogue certainly creates more fun atmosphere to it. Being myself since 6 months hooked with a Sub Forester e-boxer on the European spec (weak torque honestly, miss my former diesel) i find a lot of pleasure in the ins and outs of Sweden. Responsibly of course, since we have a generous access to the nature here, but not for motor vehicles else than on trails, worth to mention. An extra LED-array to see the wild crossing the roads in the summer nights is a good measure, when sky is light, but the ground is a dark silhouette. The excellent power distribution has so far helped me NOT hitting the lane separator on a highway in sudden deep snow, I was like the butter in a fry pan, when an invisible hand firmly took me slow and firm back into my own lane, God bless the Engineering office in Tokyo for that! Or pulling out a 30+ year old barn find on locked wheels of an Volvo Amazon from the 60's. When cars were made of solid steel. But intelligent little light wighter Sub pulled her out and up to the awaiting transportation in a waiting Dodge RAM, comfortable on... yes, the shopping mall parking areas! :D Cheers and keep up the good work, you two!
Driving up the hill was not at all like driving in snow and ice lol. Snow mode will never work to climb a dry dusty hill like that, that's user error in choosing the wrong mode. Automatic or off-road modes are far better test case scenario in future. This is because snow mode lowers your rpm so your acceleration feels dull to prevent slipping once ice for example. You need that acceleration to climb that hill and snow mode won't give it to you.
Sadly both of these vehicles are street machines, pretty boy vehicles. They are more concerned with designing these to show they are fast, but they are too low to the ground, too much overhang in the back and front, these are good for very flat dirt roads, but off road, NO! Great job on your driving demonstrations and filming. I agree with Karleena I would rather be in control as well. If you are not used to driving off road, don't. Great Job Karleena :) Thanks for sharing.
Would everyone on here talking about “Off-road capabilities suck on the Hyundai/Kia” take a few moments to research “Tire Technology”. It does not take rocket science to figure out that a simple change of boots will provide a tremendous difference in handling and performance. All the host wanted to show you is how they perform with factory provided equipment. If you put the same tires on both vehicles my money would be on that Sorento X!! The Volkswagen just looked way to sluggish and under powered I’m my eyes.

I honestly think that you gave the vw less of a chance before deciding to give it momentum. You have done your rock trail with this and it did it more easily, and 4motion needs a bit of slippage and rpm to work, just an honest opinion, great video and good chemistry with karlena, fun videos you do together!
How tall is Karleena? Over the years it has been difficult to find a vehicle that fits my wife safely (she is 4'11"). Right now we have a 2006 Kia Sedona after a Moose on a suicide mission stepped in front of her back in 2018 totaling our 2016 Escape. The Sedona was only supposed to be a temporary vehicle while insurance was resolved, etc. We fell in love with the little Kia instantly because it fits her perfectly. We would, however, like a newer vehicle but the closest Ford, Dodge, Jeep dealership is two hours away, and all other auto dealers are 5-hours away, making it difficult to justify a two-day drive for a couple tests drive.
Great video! To really highlight the difference that wheel travel and tires make, the "Up the Trail" section at 8:00 can easily be traversed in 2WD by my 2019 4Runner shod with Goodyear Wrangler Ultratterrains. Sometimes older tech is best. :)
Sorento definitely wasn't built for these roads, I think that's why they didn't dare to add off-road mode in it. I'm not sure about the V6 version though (the one we get it here in Dubai), we don't get the 2.5 turbo as you guys, we get either the V6 3.3 or regular 2.5 and it goes 0-60 in around 10 seconds, but I'm still planning to buy it cause it offers alot more than other cars in the segment for less money for my daily drive
@@drivingsports oh wow didn't know that, anyways I'm not going to bother with the AWD, I'm going straight to the front wheel drive automatic transmission, I think that's where the sorento fit best
Yeah I've seen a lot of videos of Subarus' performance being hindered by their transmissions. Unfortunate. Check out TFL's reviews of the Outback on Gold Mine Hill in CO. Even the VW Atlas outperformed it.
@@lukeheffernan I totally hope Subaru will follow Nissan and reverse back to traditional auto transmission for their most offroad focused models at least
The Kia definitely has a more luxurious interior. However, where the Volkswagen misses on interior luxury it more than makes up for with structural integrity. A simple shutting of the doors on the Kia and the Volkswagen exhibit completely different sounds. The overall strength and solid build of the Volkswagen definitely gives it an edge to the cheaply built but luxurious Kia.
@@Minimalist1266 The Atlas is solid. My friend was T-boned in his by an idiot who ran the red light at almost 50 mph. In the car it was him, wife, 4 kids and nanny. They all walked away fine from the accident. He ended up purchasing another one the next day.
In Canada we get terrain modes Snow/Mud/ Sand on the same switch as the drive modes, also these RUclips "car people" test these cars with street tires and they know about it. Most middle class people with decent income will never take a 45000$CAD car that they have on payments for 7 years beyond the back alley of a neighborhood in which they are lost, forget about taking these cars off-road. As for the cars in the vid, the Kia wins all day long with 5year/100,000 km warranty vs VW for almost $50k CAD here with 4y/80,000km, we also have remote starter button built into the key fob from factory so you get a remote starter which costs around 600$ CAD usually to install a Kia 2 way system at a dealer. That 3d row should be viewed as an added bonus, you have it just in case, no adult will sit there in reality. I recently drove 2021 Sorento SX 2.5L turbo and was very impressed being an owner of a 2018 3.3L V6 Sorento EX+, the 21' Sorento has way more torque than my car, it really puts you into the seats and is perfect for the short bursts in town. The new Sorento is lighter and is 10-12% more fuel efficient than my 2018 which gets 8.2L on average / 100km in the City which is good for a V6. I used to be a VW fan but just got tired of wasting money. In Canada the Kia trims are so loaded at 45K range that to get a similar VW you need to spend over 50K
@@williekim5297 I didn't say they are not well build and solid. But you cannot make the assumption car sounds solid so it is solid. Manufacturers pay engineers to make their cars sound a certain way.

If they only allowed 18 inch rims which is obviously more practical for awd on the sorento. 20 inch rims is stupid without giving customers a free option to choose a more practical 18 inch rims. Atleast w that size rim you could change to a good all terrain tire
I wish she had a lot more knowledge about the vehicles and terrain. You explain soo much better 😁 with what we want hear about the vehicles and how they perform.
I have a Sorento and the SMART mode is not it. Another RUclipsr goes into detail about it but the test should have been done on either Comfort or Sport.
+1 Like for Karleena. Ryan, can you do a similar test, but while towing something? Sure, neither vehicle is rated very high, but how are their towing manners? Can they pull a mini-camper or a pair of personal watercraft decently? With these "as-tested" prices, I am ASSuming they came with a tow package and hitch. Which one would you want to tow with?
Every Kia/Hyundai product you've taken off-road fails at basic things, either the Traction control has no idea what to do or the CVT and the clutch overheats, the computer gets confused, and stutters, can't imagine what would happen to a family driving that Kia on snow/ice...there is a reason Volkswagen is the number car maker in the world, flashy designs will only get you so far.
My old 2005 Hyundai Terracan would go around this track much better than these two vehicles but i wouldn't go as far as saying it was a better car.I'm sure they are very comfy to take a long drive in though where cars and trucks designed to go around countryside as this aren't so great for long distances. You don't see Tour de France riders using mountain bikes if you get my drift.

Great video Ryan and Karleena!! Please do more video's like this. I have a 2021 Pilot and I feel like my Pilot would have done better??? Thanks!
I'd like to see a Honda Passport comparison with another vehicle
Passport is due to get a refresh. New videos after that.
Great video
The cross sport dominated this test. Kia owners on suicide watch.
The off road setting of the VW did not get enough opportunity, the VW is much better.
I would like to see the new 22 VW Taos AWD on the same test
Its a little bit better. But not by very much.
Kia/Hyundai drop off-road modes due legal restrictions in the US Market.
@@drivingsports oh wow didn't know that, anyways I'm not going to bother with the AWD, I'm going straight to the front wheel drive automatic transmission, I think that's where the sorento fit best
Get any Subaru on that last climb next time. I'm quite curious on how the CVT will cope with it.
@@tallll70 Me too! CVT makes sense on like an Impreza or maybe their Ascent but not on the Outback, Forester, etc…
do you have a place that mimics Pismo Beach to test these AWD systems?
Now, how long til a Bronco video?
The Kia definitely has a more luxurious interior. However, where the Volkswagen misses on interior luxury it more than makes up for with structural integrity. A simple shutting of the doors on the Kia and the Volkswagen exhibit completely different sounds. The overall strength and solid build of the Volkswagen definitely gives it an edge to the cheaply built but luxurious Kia.
Sound is not a good way yo judge structural integrity. That is more a design feature than anything.
@@Minimalist1266 The Atlas is solid. My friend was T-boned in his by an idiot who ran the red light at almost 50 mph. In the car it was him, wife, 4 kids and nanny. They all walked away fine from the accident. He ended up purchasing another one the next day.
@@williekim5297 strong when they work, haha
You should have a second driver with a few off road driving skills...
I had to sign a document when I was signing the loan contract with Chase bank that I would NOT take my Mazda CX 5 off road. Cant remember the.penalty maybe they'd send Vinny to you know make sure I remember next time. Truth is non of these crossovers are designed to go off road.
I'll say one thing that VW cross sport is the best looking crossover/ SUV on the road today.
@@waynerogers6621 the point is it wont last long like any other volkswagen car
Does this dude ever respond to comments? This sucks my state "Seattle Washington" does not get this suv i want this so bad but not going to oregon to get it.. ill get the xse, i am just hoping this model can go off roading not crazy off road but for camping and overlanding. how is the xse hybrid good for this?
I answer all the time. But I’m not sure why you posted the same question over three completely different videos? Also, we took the RAV4 hybrid on the trail.. if that’s what you’re asking. The video is in our back-catalog if you look for it.
Hey Ryan, MORE Karleena = more views and more time watching. Your welcome 😜
well said
...truth
She was on sport mode in the rock test..
did you guys test the 4runner nightshade?
actually i wanna see the video of U 2 making the thumbnail
If they only allowed 18 inch rims which is obviously more practical for awd on the sorento. 20 inch rims is stupid without giving customers a free option to choose a more practical 18 inch rims. Atleast w that size rim you could change to a good all terrain tire
That's how it sold, so that's how it has to be tested. After all, nobody changes the tires to test their Jeeps or their RR.
Maybe because I drive a Kia before but I still prefer the Sorento
I want to see ivtm4 against this terrain
I wish she had a lot more knowledge about the vehicles and terrain.
You explain soo much better 😁 with what we want hear about the vehicles and how they perform.
Why wasn’t the vw in off road mode instead of sport like she said
So basically keep them both on Pavement?
Noticed fewer and fewer people are interested in watching off-road comnparison videos of vehicles that will never be taken off-road? I have!
She has a very harsh voice.
Being in any vehicle with Karleena would make me smile 😊
Simp
We need more of Karleena shots))) Sorry Ryine
Should've used the vr6 atlas
Does Onex XT have same awd as base Outback?
Yes, only difference is the Onyx has dual-mode X Mode.
I have a Sorento and the SMART mode is not it. Another RUclipsr goes into detail about it but the test should have been done on either Comfort or Sport.
Kia told us that Smart was the right mode. That's what we're basing it on.
How would Toyota Highlander do on the trail compared to VW?
The previous model would fail. The latest one with double-clutch coupling in the rear axle would do better. Check the SUV battle channel for details.
Hey Ryan, will you be getting your hands on the Golf 8 anytime soon?
I'm a fan of all your videos but these two vehicles off-road is very bland I think the last guy was right a video of on road handling maybe?
Can you make a workshop for a car? infinity QX 56
Neither of the two. I enjoy my old school 4.0 v6 4runner for off roading.
His seething disdain for Sorento is evident in each review he’s done of that vehicle. Why bother if there is that level of bias against a product.
I don’t feel like smart mode was right for this!
Skoda Octavia Scout 2021 would be nice :)
He's American, they don't have Skoda there, only Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche from V.A.G.
Wrong country ..
@@jonlosito2004 unfortunately 🙁
I don‘t know the sense of using „snow“ or „mud“ on sandy ground…
Total gimmick as we can clearly see by these test. As fake as the plastic skid plates.
@@krane15 the word „test“ seems to be a fake itself, because there is no sense at all in trying programs in situations they are not made for
whaaaaaat 🤯 no no no kia sorento is the best
Hi nice to see girls and ladies can go for offroading and are capable of doing off-road. Please upload more of woman testing 4x4 offroad. Thanks for a reply
these cars not for off roads. what are you doing?
Giving an awesome review of crossover capabilities.
This is not offroad. And these cars are exactly designed for places like this.
Karleena wins the soda, then immediately shakes it lol :-P
You should test a sherp
How is even more throttle a trick?
Am I the only one or does anybody else dislike these offreoad "tests" with stock tires? No wonder they fail.
Do you go skiing with sandals?
The vehicles are sold as off-road capable so the tires have to be stock.
Is this an amateur off-road car show? Snow mode is not suitable for that angle; use mud or sand mode. 16:59
Not many owners of these two vehicles will ever take them off-road.
So not the point.
is this fair test? the car has off-road mode vs the car has not built for off road. Not fair. May be he is german blood. The guy kept coaching her as soon as the output was not what he expected lol.
Having a mode setting doesn’t make it an off-roader. Also, the Sorento outside the US has an off-road mode, with otherwise identical hardware.
I just bought the 2021 Atlas Crossport; as a tall person, I appreciate the leg room. It looks & feels substantial but I'd never take it off road, we'd take the Tacoma instead. Btw, the Atlas has a seat lift feature for the vertically challenged.😇
Please please do more reviews with the Subaru Ascent
absolutely VW... kia has a long way to go tbh.
Put it in snow mode not smart, but that is just my opinion
If vw still sold the Touareg here. Those fools… it beat both those things without breaking a sweat
Actually the Touareg is similar to the Sorento. It began as a competent off-road vehicles but lost those roots long ago. All the technology that made it a challenging off-roader (height adjustable suspension, middle and rear lockers, etc) are no more
The Kia looks good but somehow I knew this would be the result. They just aren’t refined enough in any spect except interesting designs. VW all the way.
$47k for 235 hp. No thanks!
