I don't understand the necessity of washing the hands first, frankly. If I'm cleaning my face, I'm cleaning my hands. But I wash my hands routinely anyway.
I suffer from acne and washing my hands and spending 60 seconds washing my face helped to reduced a lot of it. It hasn't completely gone, but at least it got better 🙌
It's true, especially if you have a medicated cleanser making sure you dedicate time for the product to work can help ensure that you've done the first step properly then you can hopefully spend less on other products!
What's your skin type? I have dry skin. Sometimes when I air dry, I get spots that are too dry and others still have water droplets. Am I doing something wrong?
@@thefunnybuddy4138 My skin types is oily. But I don't only use the Aloe Gel as my moisturizer. After I air dry I apply my actives usually retinol and the moisturizes with a glycerine rich moisturizer
For me I keep a nail brush by the sink. At night I make sure to wash my hands and use the nail brush to get out any dirt or bacteria from under my nails before I wash my face. So often people forget about the dirt underneath their nails especially if they have long nails
Love that! I am such a nut that I even keep a sponge by the basin/sink. I first lather the sponge and wash the tap handle before I was my face then eventually my face 🙈🙈🙈 I know it's extra but it puts my nutty brain at ease, the tap handle obviously has bacteria too 🤷🏾😅
I didn’t know you were supposed to pat dry and not rub…I thought the material of the face towel was supposed to help w exfoliating dead skin cells so I’ve been rubbing this whole time!
One of the many things I have learned from you which I have applied to my skin care routine which is washing my hands first,Thank You for the tip btw ❤️ the shorts
I love that you mentioned washing your hands! I also like to clean the sink and taps before washing my face. If you turn the water on and off to during the wash, your faucet could transfer germs to your hands and face.
So true, especially if you fill sink up before cleaning as residue from everything eg toothpaste can be on it and you might see but would cause irritation
Hi Dr. Stephens, I hope you see this, would do a video on Tinea Versicolor? How to treat it and keep it from reoccurring? I have a nephew who suffers from it and it really gets him down. I love your videos, thanks for all that you do.
1.Cleanser (you should double cleanse if you wear makeup- an oil cleanser first, then a gel (foaming) cleanser) 2. Toner 3. Essence 4. Serum 5. Moisturizer 6. Eye cream 7. Sunscreen (day)
(If you don’t use essence or serums, as that is more a Korean beauty routine- just replace essence/serum with whatever active you’re using- aka vitamin C serum, retinols, niacinamide, etc)
Usually thinnest to thickest is a good rule of thumb for what order to use products in. But actives should go first (AHA/BHA/vitamin c/etc). And during the day, SPF is always last!
Forgo the commercial, chemically laden, preserved "products"; instead use a gentle soap like castile, herbal, milk/cream/ butter soap. An exfoliation wash once or twice a week is also necessary!
Thanks for this. sending to my Fiance. Even though I'm an MD ( though not Derm), he thinks I'm being extra. so I think he needs the confirmation from a Mocha Dermatologist! 😄😊
Thank you so much for acutely explaining how to wash your face and not just say that you need to wash your face every morning and night ❤and I like how you told us to wash our hands first and I appreciate that you explained how to do it ❤😊
Hi, I'm a 65 y.o. woman who's in need help with choosing the right products for my face. First let me say that I've recently found your channel in late 2021 and I've learned so much about our skin. I've taught my grandchildren to wash their hands before washing their faces, I wouldn't have thought to do that...that was very informative. My second problem is that, I've had deeply embeded blackheads on my cheeks and chin with visible signs of aging in the same areas I've described, there's also the problem of my pores, why are they so visible? I've been using Aveeno (products) with sunscreen in the moisturizer for some years now and toners in my daily routine w/o seeing any real change in my skin? I live in Philadelphia and it can get cold here...so if you could recommend some products for me to try it would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Thirdly, do you think that I should be using the skin cleansing brushes? I look forward to some of your suggestions. Thanks, Maybe you can do a show about these problems that older women are having?
If you’re going to use oil base cleanser or double cleanse make sure your face is completely dry before applying. I’ve found that oil cleanser doesn’t work as well when it’s mixed with water. Also I recommend double cleansing, using just water base if you’re wearing make-up or waterproof sunscreen won’t get it all off in one go and just using oil base sometimes drys out your skin
@Dr, Alexis Stephens what products are best to help aid in tighten up your face and neck area? I looked through your videos, but I didn't see a video on it.
She has dry skin herself so her channel has tons of recs for that. La Roche Posay hydrating cleanser is a great one. Huge and the price is affordable. Can get it at Ulta.
Is this just for a quick wash or is for thoroughly cleaning yourface? I know hands alone aren't going to clean out your pores or exfoliate the dead skin, How do you feel about spin brushes? Also what is the best product for controlling oily skin? Niacinamide breaks me out :(
Actually not drying your face but leaving it damp will help dry skin types. My skin is extremely dry but putting on my products on damp face actually helps. The rest of the water will sink in with your products leaving you more hydrated
@@purple_meowz Yeah :) so when you have washed your face, just let it air dry a bit so it isn't dripping wet. Then put all your serums and moisturizers on. Of course this wouldn't be great idea for those times when using acids on the face (like bha or aha). I personally use Paulas choice skin recovery softening cream cleanser, because I have super sensitive skin so anything that bubbles is out of the question. Recently I started using this one moisturising facial mist called Favora gentle facial mist. Im still testing it so no comment on this one. Usually the next thing I put on is Klairs Freshly juiced vitamin drop. As a moisturizer I have used Cerave moisturising cream and recently have been testing out First aid beauty's ultra repair cream. All these profucts have to be unscented, at least for me. My skin can't handle perfumes in my skincare products. To top all those layers in I use Ordinary's 100% plant derived squalane. These are the products that have worked for me. But I'm always trying to look out for new products to test out if they would work better. But it's quite hard as someone with reeeally dry and sensitive skin. I try to avoid scents, "soaps" (anything that foams really easily), "clean beauty/natural beauty" products (they almost always contain perfumes/scented oils and lot of drying alcohols)
Oh and of course I use chemical exfoliants every now and then when my face feels awfull. The Paula's choice 2% bha liquid exfoliant works for me and the Ordinary's glycolic acid is great too. But I don't use the glycolic acid that often as it is quite strong so using it often will irritate my skin.
Or some of us use a toner after that step. She has dry skin herself and her skin looks amazing, obviously she has a routine that works for her. Create one for your self
I try to achieve that goal now with 45-60 seconds with cleansing my face. I pump acne cleanser on my hands and rub together to create a foam. Apply it on my face and take my time with all the areas on my face (I don’t apply too much pressure).
Quick question can I use to cleansers at once for example I have combination skin andddd Option a: I use a hydrating and a facial to foaming cleanser like that 2times a day Option b: or I use the facial or hydration cleanser at night and one in the morning Plz help I really need it😢
I have a question, Dr. Stephens. Do we also need to use lukewarm water to rinse face after cleansing? I've read an article before stating that you should rinse with cold water. Is this true? Thank you.
Thanks for the tips! I love that you mentioned washing your hands first.

This was so helpful. I’ve been using hot water, 3 seconds, exfoliating scrub. Trying these tips ASAP 🥰
I didn’t know you were supposed to pat dry and not rub…I thought the material of the face towel was supposed to help w exfoliating dead skin cells so I’ve been rubbing this whole time!
rubbing would damage the skin..
I pat and gently wipe dry.
Never rub that damages your skin and increases chances of pores through stripping your skin
