- Well there aren't sea robins in my region. Instead there is the lizard. Sharp teeth and tough to handle. They are an interference fish for most jiggers. However, the day wasn't all bad but I was kind of bummed out losing that good cuda.
Lizardfish prep -
Cut head off and innards, trim dorsal fin, skin with a pair of skinning pliers. Fry like any other fish with the bone in.

There are many kayak anglers in NC that have a special place in their hearts for Lizard fish and now knowing that instead of releasing those spawns of Satan to make more little bait stealing demons they can start eating them makes us all very happy. Thank you. The only people who will not be happy about less Lizard fish would be those working at Berkley as those wicked fish really love Gulp
Lizard stix T-shirts coming soon lol
I Want One !
i ate one a few weeks ago and they taste fine, ( like most fresh ambush fish) but my god the bones yikes they have like pin bones that run down the entire length of the fish but they are curved so removal is hard at best. would eat again but only if hungry lol to much like work to eat. (lives in NC wanted to kill one lol) i have in the past got huge flounder off live liz fish.
Can you do a Lizard Catch and cook
Dude you're the calmest guy when you break off on a fish.... I completely lose my shit and start blaming everyone and everything around me lollllll
lollllll¿
LOLLLLL
same lol
Haha! Me too
Breaking off a fish is heartbreaking, but when you fish a lot, while it still sucks, you can handle it better. Sadly sometimes losing fish are just a part of the game and you have to accept it... then move on and catch more giants.
There is not a living organism on this earth you can’t deep fry and consume , just eat it! Great video as always !
Ki Greene deep fried human
Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.
This is great man I love how you always try “trash” fish
They are fun! People get bored of pure fishing vids.
EliasVFishing i hear ya there, been trying every new fish I’ve been catching as well! Hopefully I can live up to what you’re doing, Florida style! Just gotta get my kayak out there some how haha
Really enjoy watching your “trash fish” videos!
The water and weather looked Perfect!
I must admit that it's a pet peeve of mine to watch people handle fish, and demonstrate no regard for the importance of their slime coat. I just want to say thank you for wetting the board before you measure. I'm sure it's of no consequence for a keeper, but from a conservation of life standpoint speaks volumes for the sport.
Nice catch and cook Elias. thanks for the video.
love that you cook and eat it... the Italian chef is freakin' AWESOME
I've enjoyed our videos for awhile now, your catch and cook one are my favorite, most of your trash fish are fish I target. Even your favorite, bluefish fine eating smoked or smothered in tomato sauce, there's not many fish I haven't eaten. Keep them videos coming.
I love targeting big blues. Oyster toads are an amazing tasting fish as well!
Can’t stop watching this channel
Great video...we run into these ALL the time down here (florida)...and they can actually get fairly large....awesome awesome awesome vid, Elias. I gotta try this now.
Dude I asked for it and you did it! Nice
Looked really good! Good video!
I have no idea why I love catch and cooks so much, but they give me life and purpose ahhaha
Great video, your catch and cooks seem to be better each time sorta like you’re getting more comfortable with doing them. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it, keep up the great work and thanks for taking the time to bring us along on this venture.
Thanks man!
That looks fun. Lizard fish looks good.
Wow I didn't even realize that lizard fish got big enough to eat. Great video. Can't wait to find EliasVFishing brand Frozen Lizard Sticks on the store shelves soon.
Nice job Elias - really fun video!
Still eyeing those giant fluke you guys are hammering 😀
EliasVFishing you don’t even want to know about today. I was at work but Skinner and Sweeney did a number on them with 3 nine pounders plus a couple of 8s.
We've all been waiting for this one!
One man's trash fish is another man's delicacy 😂 here in my country lizardfish is considered very good eating fish fried whole
Nice guy, nice fishing expirience. Greets from germany.
Looks hella good!
Great idea! You don't know till you try!
another dead calm day for you. meanwhile, all i get is 5ft rollers
I now have a new found respect for the hated Lizard fish. I’m going to try one 👍🏼. Thanks
In the past I caught a crab for every game fish. One year I caught more Sea Robins ever before and thought that was my new spirit animal. Now it is the Lizard fish! I have to admire their their aggression and fight. Perhaps one day I'll keep one. Often they attack lures their own size. Imagine a trolling for a five pound lizard fish; you'd need a lure to feet long!
You’ve inspired me to give lizard fish a try.
Great vlog !!! Lots of so called trash fish are under rated !!!!!!
Over here in Northern Europe the greater Weever vastly ignored because its got nasty poisonous Spikes!!!!
I promise you its easy to fillet and tastes Superb 😉👍🍻
Keep up your good work promoting different edible fish !!🌊🌊🦀🦀
Woow...Your video is good, I really like it.
I was stationed in Hawaii for several years and did a lot of spearfishing. We always took a lizard when we saw them and cooked them on a grill. They were good.
I’ve cooked this and it’s just as good as flounder in my opinion! No one believed me.. it’s good ... and you right fried the little bones dissolve for the most part
Great video always watch your catch and cooks. Lizard Fish are dried and eaten quite often on the west coast of India, where they call it "Boomla"
Love the sound of a reel drag screaming
Use to catch them a lotta on really light tackle in Greece and grilled them on the beach. There they grow up even bigger than the one you ate, got some up to around 17-18"!
Great video
You're the man!
Very funny video. Love these odd ball catch and cooks. We got killed by these off Hatteras last summer. They are hyper aggressive and ate everything we put in the water including Yo-Zuri plugs as big as they were. I tired one on the grill and found the meat pretty darn tasty, but you're spot on about the weird bone structure. Will definitely try frying the next time. The bones were super fine, so I suspect your right about the deep frying too. Thanks for the good work, as usual.
It’s def a fish grab a dozen, skin and peel like I did and fry heavy. Def a good flavor
I can't help but think if sheephead could talk they'd sound like Bubba J. Oh hey Elias, thanks for the triggerfish recomendation. Unfortunately it's not something we can get here in California. The water is too cold, the only places you find them are down by San Diego and Baja (in prime great white territory) and there's only one species of them. I asked a couple fish markets and they said they don't ever get them in or have any access to them. They suggested ling cod, sand dab, and petrale sole. So a couple flounder species and ling cod which are rockfish.
My only mother-in-law fish was at Sebastion inlet area thirty some yrs ago. I also was surprised it was so good...
You should do a shark catch and cook! I think they might taste different than the dogfish. Love your channel Elias.
I wanted to - but I believe I need HMS permit for sharpnose and blacktips
Shark tastes...a lot like gator/chicken/marlin. its weird.
Almost all shark is good very firm flaky
Here’s one for you, didn’t believe it myself until I tried it. About 10 years ago I came across an article ( as in ONE) about a fisherman who was hoping to catch some nice fish to serve for an upcoming party. He was in Baja California but due to the non-corporating weather he was facing a big skunk. Desperate, but unwilling to be defeated, he brought back a real shocker! -.....Mola Mola -one of my favorite reads. Inspired, I too have it a try following his advice, Wow.....I’m now a Mola Mola hunter...lol ..... “open it up like a can, throw away what you think you would keep and keep what you think you would throw away” those were the instructions lol...
You're a brave man, kind of like the first one to eat an oyster.
I watch the video to the end and you still had me at 15 inch's on a fluke to keep..lol
I know this is a long shot but would love to see a carp catch and cook.
The smooth hound is a major pain in the ass on the west coast when I've gone out fishing for halibut
Dayum! I nevee thought about eating one of those. When i was in Cali we used to catch a ton of them and throw them back because people say it is trash fish. I guess just like Cudas and Bonito. People hate them but in Europe and North Africa, we buy them at the Market and fry them and enjoy them.
Just finished 2 perfectly good redfish tacos. opened youtube, saw your title and almost lost my dinner. FYI I was out Monday using fresh cut Grunt for bait and could not get away from the black bass. Switched to lizard and could not get a bite at all for 30 minutes. Switched back to Grunt and resumed catching. Just saying - even the black bass have a line they will not cross. Its been 3hrs since dinner so guess I will try to watch your video now. Keep up the good work I think! LOL
And I fish a lot. Once had a Spanish jump in th boat. My cat loved it
I had. Lizard fish here in Philippines the other day, it was tasty. Never had it before
Awesome! I threw so many of those away over the years. Now I know!
Crazy how the sheeps head teeth look like human teeth!!
I’ll be down there in the next month fishing with Garret, hope to meet you dude
Great video keep them coming God and Country
I keep hearing HOW GOOD Lizard Fish are! Better than trout and flounder is the common statement! I',m keeping the next ones around Sanibel Isle... they are everywhere while fishing for trout.
I'm glad I subscribed to you I'm always entertained and when I go fishing I always ask can I eat this
This guys almost as relaxed as zoffinger.
I have what he's smokin.
Elias, do a Shark Catch n Cook since there's so many of'em... If their Dogfish they're pretty good I heard.. Regardless Thanks for the Vid
Sharpnose and blacktip are good. I believe I need a HMS to harvest in NC though.
Please get a blacktip next time...appreciate the content as always
I don't know about where he is, but I've done a lot of fishing in New England and dogfish must be released alive up there
Not in florida Mr. Jeremy Ross.
Yeah, spiny dogfish aren't bad sauted in butter and garlic.
There used to be a fast food franchise called Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips. It featured the great North Atlantic whitefish. It was spiny dogfish.
I like this guy
We need that toadfish civeche catch n cook
Watch Elias eat any fish he pull out from the water XD
Cool video brother.. Gotta come and see you soon. If you are up this way give me a ring and jump on the skiff
Great stuff as always Elias!!
I know you dont like those shark, but man I could spend all day having fun with fish of those sizes. Anything up to 50lb when you dont keep fish anymore is always gonna be fun. Well, to an old fart like me anyways ;)
Ehh - they are fun to a degree...but there are some better fish to catch out there!
Elias,
Great video. On a separate note, I never see you on the Hobie Compass, did you not like it? I was thinking of getting one for when I don't want to use my PA12. Seems like it would be good for quick trips, minimal fishing, in & out. What are your thoughts, if you don't mind? thanks, big fan.
Awesome
I'm a new subscriber and love your stuff. QUESTIONS: (1) How far out in the ocean do you go? (It always looks so calm). (2) Are you targeting specific reefs or do you just look for fish and structure when out in the ocean? Thanks!
Both, I am brand new to the area. I haven't found too much off the chart stuff here yet but that took me 3-5 years to really get down in NY. I am headed to the well known stuff still.
Hey Elias, have you ever gone fishing in Montauk near Block Island for tuna?
These fishes are the best bait you can get
Those sharpnose make great steaks and even better, deep fried shark nuggets. I always soak them in milk for an hour though.
Great video and keep up the good work man!
Do you need a HMS permit to keep them now?
EliasVFishing I believe you only need to have one if you're in Federal waters. In SC, from the fresh/salt dividing line to 3 miles out is state waters. Im not sure about where you're at though.
There was so many Sharpnose here about 2-3 months ago, I actually stopped fishing for a few months because it was all I was catching, bunch of Sharpnose pups.
I caught a lizardfish today and if I had known it was any good if have kept it.
I've never seen someone who looks more like they're from the Nor'east than Elias. Coming from someone in CA
Good to eat but better than ballyhoo for trolling behind a seawitch for king mackerel!😊
You had a third rig set up with a casting reel ... what kind of reel was that one? Thanks
Should try the lizard fish a sashimi!!
whiting were wiped out due to over fishing by factory fleets, mostly Russian
Wrong😂 there is a shit ton of whiting on the east coast and the gulf
Hey that’s a hell of a filet job for that lizard fish tho
Do a catch and cook with a sharpnose. I kinda like those fillets. Bleed 'em first though. I do a tail bleed.
What pound line do you use for saltwater game ?
The guy who told me about your channel has eaten these and said they were good.
Lizard stick 😂 Bro fry it up in butter next time. Looks good though!
Do you like the Stradic or Fuego more?
I live in New Jersey and i caught a inshore lizardfish
E look up white fish they look similar. Almost exact
Hey Elias do you do any guided tours or experiences?
Not anymore - I can recommend charter captains in NY and NC though if interested.
When fish get the swim bladder blow out like that, and you want to release it, you can use a 18gage chest decompression needle. You want to get under a scale and stick just enough of the needle in to let the air out and the fish will swim away just fine. That will keep them from just floating away on the surface till they die
Was that the swim bladder? That looked like the intestine/stomach honestly.
Lizards are my "constant" here in SW Florida. I got one like 1.5lbs once, the record is 2. I like to strip them up and use for cut bait. There all white meat and meat eaters, should taste good.
What are tou talking about theres no whiting up here in the northeast? Its a huge Fishery here i have seen them as big as 5 lbs.
I fish the same area you do, I want to see your ride full of lizard fish. Eat all you want, hate those aggravating bastards! They love clark spoons when trolling for spanish also
Good to eat but better than ballyhoo for trolling behind a seawitch for king mackerel!
8:41 I've been curious about what grabs your hook to pull line like that and make you break it off. Is it a huge shark? Did you snag a whale?
It could be porpoise shark or huge red 50lb. A porpoise will strip all your line quick
If you eat barracuda again do small ones. Odds of poison low
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that most fish, trash or game, tastes just like fish. Lol
Thanks Elias,,,,, We enjoy your stuff, specially the Catch & Cook,,,,, junk fish?! lol,,, (we're From Ohio,,, vacation down there, Oct,,, either Emerald Isle or N Topsail).
I would really appreciate a tad more 'description', so WE could learn more! 2 of my friends have yaks but are kinda leery about using them in the salt,,, I think that they are afraid of those SHARKS! So please, kindly mention how far offshore your going,,, how deep the water,,,, specially around the shore points & reefs, what KIND of shark/ fish you caught,,,, & maybe add the size limits & or season per species.
Also, Where/ how your launching those yaks,,,,, that would be helpful.
2 years ago, we were drift fishing the inside waterway, looking for grunts or spots on the drop-off points, & every time we dropped bait or cast rubber, we had a LIZARD ON! Like you thought, or was told,,,, they're 'Junk Fish', so we threw them all back! We 'Could'a had a cooler FULL!
"Taste like Crappie & Y Perch" you say!!!!! omg,,,,,,,
You just KILLED ME! lmbo,,,,,,,,,
Well,,,, keep up the good vids! Maybe we'll see you down there some fall?
NCKFA,,,, Your comment was RIGHT ON! Exactly what I WAS thinking! ;>)
Glad you enjoyed it! I typically venture anywhere from 1 to 4 miles out on the ocean depending on weather. I try to not to talk about launch locations and where I am fishing as other locals don't appreciate this information being divulged. I'm new to the area and have received warnings already about being a spot burner. Which is understandable since they don't like a new wave of traffic heading that way to their waters.
Seeing you said better than a sea robin and has a mild sweet flavor, how close is it to chain pickerel?
Very close to pickerel
@12:05 i thought it was eel...you should do a eel catch and cook...fried lizard on a stick the new fair food
hey Elias, you have been doing a lot of "TRASH FISH" catch & cooks, I've got a good one I was hopping you can do. how about a "BLACKTIP SHARK"!!! I herd that they are actually pretty taisty if you gut them rite away and put them on ice for a while. then you filet it leaving the skin with about 3 to 4 mm of meat on it, also when you do filet it, don't cut the belly meat with the filet, leave the belly meat on the shark. I herd somewhere that sharks piss through there skin and it's usually through the belly meat. """ FOOD FOR THOUGHT""" LOL!!!!
Blacktip has to be 54 inches here - let’s see if I can get one
Where and what store can I buy lizardfish at
Is there a "white meated" fish that isn't good to eat?
50+ pound kayak golden tile fish catch and cook coming soon?
Cuda!
Whiting are making an appearance now there catching more and more
Yeah, but the days of targeting them are over
EliasVFishing true
Sheepshead is good eating!
Do you bleed all of your fish, or just the bloodier ones? I bleed all my fish because it kills them quickly and it makes for a cleaner time filleting them
Bleed all
EliasVFishing can u please tell me ur fish bleeding technique that u. Use?...thnx
joescit what I do is I cut the gills. It makes for a cleaner time filleting the fish. People ask me why there is no blood and that is because I bleed them
I think there is some evolutionary link with reptiles.
