  • Learn how to test your starter with a battery in this video from Partzilla.com.
When the starter is removed, you can still test it with a battery to see if it’s working. We’re looking at three different starter designs, and how your testing will vary from one to the other.
Our first design is self contained, with a solenoid and bendix both in the unit. We’re also looking at a unit with a bendix and a separate solenoid. Finally, we’ll test a unit with a separate solenoid, but no bendix.
For some of our testing, we’re using a multimeter. Get one here:

These are just the basics, so for specific instructions for your unit, refer to your service manual. For diagrams of the electrical system on your motorcycle, ATV, or UTV, find it at www.partzilla....

how about using a scope to look and see if you have a shorted commutator section, i.e, a dead spot, starters more times then not will not exhibit problems until your stranded, testing with a battery only tells you that it turns on, a scope allows you to "look inside" of the starter with out even removing it from the machine.

So i did this for the last example. Its for a motorcycle starter. I just get a spark. Is that a bad armature/commutator?
