I hear you. I'm pretty liberal socially and less-so (but still liberal) politically... but I think that distinction you identified is part of that instant reaction, i.e. there's a difference between social conservatism and political conservatism or social liberalism and political liberalism. People kinda forget that, and I get why... parties tend to base platforms on both social & political values, so they get convoluted.
I do also think though that being in Canada saturated with American media we can also forget that Conservative doesn't necessarily mean Republican, or Liberal doesn't necessarily mean Democrat.

@@Gwenhwyfar7 that is no true Scotsman fallacy. Because most conservatives are anti gay and anti abortion because they knew it is immoral acts and already banned like Uganda. Conservatives are against drugs because it harm society just like abortion, homosexuality.
Most liberals are for gun control and abortion because Europe is doing fine with these issue. Liberals use abortion as freedom just like homosexuality as freedom. Liberals use gun control to prevent gunshots like every europe countries have gun control and few gun death than USA.
Abortion rights supporters argue in name of privacy which it is same arguments that legalize gay marriage and drug use. People say abortions are not to be restricted by government, but it is name of freedom. By your logic conservatives who oppose abortion are not true conservatives because abortion is same privacy issue just like homosexuality, drugs, etc.
Not every liberal are pro gay or pro choice but they are few compare to majority of liberal people. There are pro choice conservatives but it happen outside of us area like Western Europe.

Why is it that J.J. (who I love by the way) says that he wants people to live freely from government intervention in their lives and yet supports the government imposing it's will on something that people who are also opposed to government intervention into their lives do (smoke pot, for those of you who haven't guessed) It just perplexes me that he and other conservatives generally dislike government interventions when the government intervenes for things that really matter in society (gun control, social issues, environmental regulations...) But support government intervention into things that in the grand scheme of things won't really make a difference at all (pot, abortions, marriage equality, trans rights... ) Not that I'm not super aware of J.J.'s views on many of theses issues (I just know that he's pro gay marriage and anti pot) but this whole idea of true freedom to live one's life that is often preached by the conservatives is stepped on with meddling in peoples lives that required no government intervention and ignoring issues that needed the government to step in and lend a hand.

Supporting weed prohibition is impossible without hypocrisy. JJ thinks the government should forcibly compel me to choose *more* dangerous recreational drugs? Forcibly prevent me from making the choices I think are best for me? Alcohol abuse is rampant in the gay community, and weed can't poison you or give you cancer. I get the feeling that drunks project their feelings of regret for giving themselves health problems onto weed, and that's why they support prohibition.

I, a conservative think they should what they did to other drugs. Adderall(Cocaine), Allergies(Meth).
Plus, with people mostly using it for anxiety purposes. I think we should put more focus on public mental health facilities. Dealing with the problem and not becoming dependent on it. I want the best for people and I KNOW that truly happy people don't take drugs even recreational ones, they search for what they can do for society, really put they're mark on the world even if that means being special to just one other person.

A true Conservative should understand that "marriage" is a religious and social institution, not a state institution.
The Gov't should have as close to nothing to do with the free choices of people as possible, in so far as who they choose to "marry" themselves with, and how that marriage is arranged.
Sure, marriage does have many beneficial effects on society in terms of income earned per household, child poverty, drop out rates, crime rates, etc. So, there is some room for the Gov't to offer incentives to people within society to get married rather than stay single or in an unmarried relationship indefinitely. However, that doesn't grant the Gov't the right to control the manner in which that marriage is arranged or who decides to get married to each other.
In other words, a Conservative would rather the (Federal) Gov't stay out of inter-personal relationships altogether, and let society operate on it's own.
I'm a Conservative and I don't want the Gov't telling anyone who they can or cannot get married to.
With all that being said, it is not necessarily a "Right" to get married to anyone you want. It's a "Right" to enter into a legal or social contract with anyone who is of legal age and able to make decisions for themselves. That means it is the job of the Gov't to protect and enforce contracts between individuals, and a marriage between two consenting adults is essentially a social contract. Not necessarily a legally binding contract, but a social contract nonetheless.
When Republicans try to use the Gov't to impose their own social and religious beliefs on the whole of society, they are not acting Conservatively, in terms of Gov't control over life. They are acting "Conservatively" in terms of their own personal religious institution or their own social belief structure. However, that's not true Conservatism in terms of "governance".

The US has a reactionary/conservative (far-right) party (Republicans) and a conservative/liberal (center-right) party (Democrats). As a result, the US tends to settle on center-right policies, which I find appalling. I'd like to see us have a progressive party (center-left) and a conservative party (center-right) so that compromise is centrist policies: that is those that combine gov't and market policies to find the best solutions, and apply logic to society.
I happen to be highly socially libertarian and center-left economically, which in the context of the US makes me without a party, though the closest are the Green Party and the progressive wing of the Democratic Party (as a result I am a Bernie Sanders supporter who would vote for Jill Stein if Hillary wins the nomination). [If you weren't aware, Hillary is economically centrist at best and conservative at worst, while being much too socially authoritarian for me. Bernie's (somewhat) center-left economically and socially somewhat closer to me.]
Being a conservative in Canada must be quite different from what we call conservative (reactionary) in the US today. We have the radical elements in the GOP ready to ban abortion and gay marriage, rip apart market based healthcare reform, drastically slash taxes for the wealthiest people in the country, and so much more. I would hope that and expect JJ is actually conservative and not reactionary.

Wow, fascinating topic. Great work you too. JJ, a "gay conservative" does seem like an oxymoronic term. My question is, and I'm sorry if this shows my ignorance, I am American after all, I know the stigma associated between one calling one's self a Republican/conservative and Democrat/liberal here in the states, but do they have the same meaning in Canada? Especially with the rise of the whole neocon movement, has the meaning of Canadian Republican (is that a thing?) vs American Republican diverged into different meanings? Adam, the US is in such ridiculous turmoil for more reason than those two blanket ideal/terms, you are correct, however, it does have a lot to do with it. I'm waiting for the bible belt to secede and become Jesusland while the rest of us can become the United States of Canada. Hawaii can come too.

    • @JJMcCullough
      @JJMcCullough 8 лет назад +6

+Matteo Smith Basically the way it works in Canada is that our version of the Republican Party is simply called "The Conservative Party" and our version of the Democratic Party is simply called the "The Liberal Party." This can sometimes get confusing, so you sometimes hear Canadians talk about "small-c conservative" or "small-l liberals" to refer to people who have liberal/conservative BELIEFS as as distinct from people who support/are part of the formal political parties.
There will obviously be some differences, but for all intents and purposes Canadians and Americans mean the same thing when they talk about conservatives and liberals. Being a conservative (and especially a Conservative) in Canada carries with it all the same negative stereotypes as being a conservative or a Republican in America, particularly in the gay community.

Im a straight conservative, but i reject social conservatism completely... im pro choice, vegan, atheist, pro lbgt marriage, pro death with dignity, pro drug legalisation. Im a hardliner on immigration, very strict and fiscally conservative. I agree that social conservatism pisses me off more than anyone... but after Orlando... who were the guys who stepped up? Conservatives...
when the right evolves on gay marriage, i think there will be a lot of conversions. I think the term 'rational conservative' should be the new label

Though you don’t seem very much like a Republican or what we typically see of conservatives here. You are what I would call a reasonable conservative. I identify as a different brand of conservatism, mainly American Constitutional Conservatism. It is very much more liberal than many conservatives in the US, but our founding principles were very liberal. We just have been taking our sweet ol’ time in putting them into practice. There are conservative interpretations of the Constitution in terms of economics, but many of them would have to concede a number of points to the liberals in terms of prohibitions of personal liberties. Many conservatives would prefer to ban things that seem scary like Marijuana, but Liberals would argue for personal freedom, plus we starve cartels of funding in Mexico and South America. I do support some common sense gun legislation, but I also firmly believe in gun rights ownership which is actually a lefty position. As the more left wing a position is the more it believes a particular thing should be accessible to the public and decentralized. Gun ownership rights, left wing. Gun ban for civilians- right wing. Why cause right wing is complete consolidation of power and rigid hierarchies while left-wing is equal and decentralized. If we had really left wing justices on the supreme court they would actually interpret the 2nd amendment as socialism. The right to bear arms would mean upon request the government is required to give you a firearm.

President Obama was against gay marriage until 2012. Although the political spectrum has evolved and platforms have changed, President Abraham Lincoln who emancipated the slaves was a Republican. President Grant and the Congress that banned slavery and gave citizenship to African-Americans were Republican, and even the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would not have passed without significant Republican support because the Democrats at the time were divided on the issue. Yes, people will say that the party platforms have changed but although the Republicans came to power in the 1860s as huge supporters of tariffs, and although since at least the 1920s they have moved to the reverse of that with free-trade, President Donald Trump took the Party back to endorsing tariffs for a hot minute, so things can go back and forth. I also think that the fact that the Democratic Party can go from being the most pro-racism and pro-segregation party to the party most identified with civil rights activism within only a matter of decades, shows that these things can change dramatically in a relatively short time because of how fast new generations come along and challenge the old. The core economic values of the Democratic Party today are essentially the same as those of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s though modern Democrats would say his policies were racially insensitive and indeed many of his allies and supporters were staunch white supremacists. So, J.J. can clearly agree with the core economic and philosophical principles of the Conservative Party while having a different opinion from its most recent Prime Minister on this or that issue, especially since J.J. is relatively young compared to most Conservative politicians it isn't that surprising that he would be to the Left of them on certain social issues. We should also remember that the Canadian Conservative Party is different from the U.S. Republican Party and in my opinion especially in recent years Canadian Conservatives as a whole seem more likely to elect leaders that Americans might call socially liberal and fiscally conservative, somewhat similar to some of the popular Republican Governors and U.S. Senators of New England in the Northeast United States.
