This test is between two Winchester 45acp Hollow points. The Winchester Basic and the Winchester PDX1 Supreme Elite Personal Protection "BONDED." This test was done to see the difference between Winchester Superior hollow point rounds the PDX1, compared to the lower grade Basic hollow point rounds. In store you pay roughly two times as much for the PDX1 Personal Protection Rounds. So I want to see if they're worth the extra money and can stand up to all the hype.
Hollow points will expand to a much larger diameter then a normal bullet, due to the cavity on the top of the round. Lower quality hollow points have a tendency to fragment(Process when a round will start to separate and fall apart) as they hit their target. Fragmentation leads to less penetration and less Stopping Power(the ability to deliver its energy into its desired target), because the expansion of the round is not uniform, and does not carry as much retained weight. The PDX1 rounds however, are "Bonded," this means that the copper jacket that surrounds the lead core, is welded together. This prevents fragmentation, therefore giving a round more penetration and retained weight.
Bonded Hollow Points, like the PDX1, not only give you reliability, but also peace of mind knowing that each round will preform the same.
-Basic Winchester Rounds-Weight: 230gr.
-Muzzle Velocity: 880fps
-Muzzle Energy: 396 ft. lbs.
-PDX1 Winchester Rounds-Weight: 230gr.
-Muzzle Velocity: 920fps
-Muzzle Energy: 432 ft. lbs.
Looks aside, they both performed very well and no one should be deterred from carrying either.
Seeing the front of the other bullet would have been nice. It might have looked nastier from the front than the PDX1 did.
I carry pdx1 9mm 124gr. +P for home defense and out and about. I love that little round
Well im glad to have you on board....new vids each week
It looks like both did very well, I love my PDX1s but the WWBs do very well for a very old hp design. I don't think you'd be too bad off if all you had was the WWB. Those older hp designs did very well for a lot of years. 16 inches of penetration with very good expansion to over three quarters of an inch would be considered even today as very acceptable. In my youth (unfortunately a considerable time ago) it was a favorite load as it fed well, was very accurate, and was consistent shot to shot in my old 1911. I wasn't the only one who liked it either, as my dad and brothers all practiced and used it for self defense long ago. I'll still pick it up when I find it but my pet load has been the PDX1s for a little while. They feed well, are accurate, and are very consistent just like the WWB. I subscribed a while ago but I keep finding these little gems on your channel, thanks for the tests!
Wow... The basic USA45JHP is pretty awesome!
Foe HALF the money it does a fantastic job!!
Well thank you! Welcome to GY6vids. Much Much more to come!
Thanks....good to have you
@QuattroStig Thanks=) Im glad you enjoyed it...
@TacticoolGUY Thanks...yeah I put a ton of time and effort into my vids=) Glad you enjoyed them...Yes I highly recommend the PDX1
I carry the PDX1 rounds in my Ruger P97 .45acp
You're welcome....and YES! Much much more to come=)
Excellent test!! I love Winchester ammo. PDX1 & Ranger-T Series are the best out there!! Love it!!
@yborzenko Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it
That is great....Yeah the PDX1 is one of my favorite rounds=)
Can not be more wrong, sorry!
Imagine the petals on a JHP spinning through flesh like a forward moving BLENDER! It tears up and BLENDS anything it goes through. Where as the FMJ goes straight through moving in a straight line.
Watch my video "Hollow Point Vs. FMJ- Clear Ballistics test #1"
I just took my brand new Ruger P345 to the range yesterday and fed it many types of ammo. It loved the PDX1 best and I found that it had less recoil than the 165 grain low recoil Federal Hydra-Shok. Excellent round, hard to find.
Over Penetration is only a problem when your hitting past the 20in mark....the velocity would be so low after leaving the target, that it wouldn't cause to much collateral damage.
OH YEAH...they are my favorites....I made a comparison video between the CRITICAL DEFENSE Hornady and the PDX1's
A LOT OF PRACTICE making it=) just takes time to get the right amount of water to gel ratio, plus proper cooking temp and time. Not to mention cooling times and reheating temp and re cooling temp=) I take pride in good homemade gel.
The next time you do one of these tests it would be real nice to show BOTH sides of the expanded bullets. We got to see two seconds of the front of the PDX1 but I'm still wondering what the other one even looked like. Other than that major flaw it was a pretty good review.
@MissBattleBorn Well thank you=) I put a TON of effort into doing these Ballistics Gel tests=) I have another one im going to post in about 5 days...the PDX1 45acp vs. a HOG HEART in ballistics gel...shows you what happens if a hollow point hit a heart!!! IT IS AWESOME, just wait and see!!!
Thanks you so much for LIKING it and posting it...means a lot, and helps a lot!
TTYL PH
I really like those PDX1 bonded rounds. I use them in both my 9mm and .45 auto. I hope that i never NEED to use them.
I've been watching a few of your videos, I just found them today, and you just picked up a new subscriber. Keep these gel tests coming!
It's definitely worth investing in top of the line ammo for concealed carry/home defense (I'd still recommend shopping around for the best deal), but I think the generic JHPs are great for stockpiling, people on a budget, and testing. They're definitely a better option than FMJ, and the Remington UMC JHP's are only a couple bucks more. I like them for testing JHP feeding in my guns as well, though you should still test whatever you're going to actually carry, it may reveal serious issues without
@scabbynacker Yes it is to maintain the weight, which is what allows it to keep penetrating what ever it hits=) and also allows for a quick release of its momentum into its target "STOPPING POWER" ....so yes I agree with you, and thats what I said as well in the vid=)
Thank you! Welcome to GY6vids
Andrew-GY6vids
I believe the point of bonded jackets is to maintain the weight of the projectile even after shooting through hard barriers like auto glass, sheet metal, and wood. Bullets with bonded jackets perform significantly better in the FBI's barrier tests, which are extremely unforgiving--they shoot through wood, sheet metal, auto glass...
HEY!!! LOL, great video once again bro. I myself love the PDX-1 for my .40s&w and I also carry the Speer Gold-Dot for it too! I got a cheap box of the Winchester white box HP, actually two boxes. The first one I bought had the same bullet in it as the PDX-1 but then the second box they changed it up. It had a bigger HP hole with mild serrations going down the side and it had a smooth edge around the nose. The other had the little wave edge around the nose of the bullet!
I want to see PDX compare to hydra shock....
@premiertremere Tac .40 is a good choice...Im still a 45acp guy myself=) but it really just comes down to bullet placement. Which I have NO DOUBT you have a grip on =)
@23mrcowboys I was going to...but I wanted to see what it would do just HEADS UP...plus Ive seen a lot of tests with the PDX1 rounds and never seen one clog before...next test I do will be with DENIM on the front though=) Thanks Ben
Good vid. Maybe you can show us how to make home-made ballistics gel.
You deserve a lot more views than you get. This was very informative, good job!
@MrJmfitch Thanks Justin. Yeah over penetration is bad for in home use....but I guess thats why they call these rounds "PERSONAL PROTECTION" and not home defense LOL...I guess the penetration power is a good thing in some fashion. That way if it hits bone or thick clothes...it will still keep pushing through=)
They are fantastic!
Thanks for the info. It does look like both will get the job done.
@gnomehater63 a little wet rag on top of the gel, and covered up inside the refrigerator helps to prevent that bro=)
welcome to GY6vids!
@premiertremere WOW!!! by far one of THEE BEST comments I have ever received=) Comments like this and people like yourself are what make me want to keep making these videos! Im VERY VERY happy to see a Soldier like yourself enjoying my videos...a good compliment from a soldier, that FIGHTS FOR OUR NATIONS FREEDOMS is worth a 100 good compliments in my book.
Just know when you are doing work and putting in time fighting for our Country, that this AMERICAN, Will NEVER take that for GRANTED!
No i havent....I'll look into it...Thanks=)
@GY6vids The hydra-shok is over 10 years old. I would do the HST because it is new like the PDX and would be more of a fair test considering when the PDX was developed they looked at technologies that all the other companies use.
Yeah those are pretty good
I've also heard the newer Winchester white box HP don't usually do so well, like they don't even expand, when you shoot them threw different material. They just act like a pissed of FMJ. But I did hear they do well threw AUTO GLASS!! I think that should be your next test bro!! PRETTY PLEASSSE!!!! LMAO. Great job and I better see my posts on your wall dude!! Lol just kidding
Interesting....thanks for the info
fragmentation isn't necessarily a bad thing. over penetration causes more collateral damage. but since the 2 inch difference in penetration doesn't account for much difference i suppose its mission oriented with one having slightly less penetration and risk of collateral damage or one with more consistent and slightly deeper penetration. my guess is in actual terminal result both will stop your intended soft target.
Try the Winchester Ranger T and Federal HST, they should give you even more "blended" wound tracks.
@krais1960 IT SURE IS!!! im truly happy to see those results=)
@ultimus1998 Those and Hornady Critical defense and Federal Hydra-Shok ammo are next on the list
Thanks for the video. The first box of ammunition I tried in my match tuned gov. model was the Winchester white box stuff. My piece put 10 rounds into a single ragged hole at 10 yrds , so I stuck with that and never looked back. But I always wondered about the bullets terminal performance, and now I know. thnx again.
@lskw1 MUHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH I figured it was a much more specific way of measuring it LOL....Thanks for stopping by and checking out the vid bro
Once again I understand that you're going to have your own opinion...but to say they suck is a bit much....I have done a ton of Ballistics gel tests with the PDX1's and they are kick ass. The Hydra-Shok's are ok too, but they have a severe problem with CLOGGING. Their Center post causes serious problems with expansion as well.
Still waiting to hear how many Tests you have done?
LOL ....true...but its not just better looking, its also much more reliable!
@RoadHardOffRoad Way ahead of you!
@bonesoncampus LOL yeah probably =) but the ZombieMax are the exact same as the Hornady personal protection rounds...if im not mistaken...but that would be a fun test=)
@videosbymike You are welcome Mike...thanks for checking it out=) it will be displayed in a up and coming online outdoors sports magazine in march... I just signed a Contract with them as one of their gun guys for their magazine. The magazine is called AKTION MAGAZINE...go to AKTIONMAGcom to check it out. They are going to go big within the next year=)
i have done a few tests with the fed hydro and found them to be a very good round and have never had one clog or fail to expand and most would expand to the .60 .65 range, if you shoot any of these type rounds out of a short barrel weapon you could have a fail to expand but thats not the bullets problem its the short barrel, now fed has made there newer hydros out of a softer compounds that even expand in the shortest of barrels say 3in, have you tested these bonded rounds thru a short barrel
@bluetunder40 Thanks=) More testing to come
Good info...thanks
Great video man. Put alot of time and effort into all that. Might start using the PDX1, looks like a nice round.
@GY6vids
That is awesome! Congrats!
I will go check it out.
Joban, this was a GREAT video!!!! Seriously....great info and very well done! I liked the crap out of it :) I keep the Winchester PDX 12 Gauge ammo in my home defense shotgun but I've never taken a look at it for my pistol. Seems to perform really well. Thanks for the awesome info! I'm favoriting this and putting it on my MBB Facebook page :)
I just purchased Winchester white box JHP and was looking for Gel test results. Now I know performance details. I paid $33.57 for 50 at Walmart, So its a good buy. FBI standards are 12"- 18"max. So these results are with in their standards. Unless your shot with a JHP I wouldn't be concerned if it was bonded. Lets have the NRA do a survey with police across America, and see if they use bonded JHP on citizens of the taxpaying America.
@JezzaKill64 Well thank you...That means a lot=) stay in touch more often Jezza
Looks like both did a very good ammo . you sound a little predigest on the PDX . Me , I carry the good ol Winchester white box hollow points
@MrJmfitch AMEN TO THAT!!!
and yes I will be doing the DENIM in the next tests=) Should be pretty cool to see
Very nice testing!
The truth is in the evidence.
Yeah you can...but it starts to lose its edge after about 3x's
Any round that fragments and sheds its weight as it penetrates is going to do more damage than one that is bonded and stays together.
@viperbo21 That would be a good test...I think my next HEADS UP TEST...will be Federal Hyda-Shok vs PDX1. That should be a great test
jeeeesus! PDX1 is dangerous! good video man!
@jernelsonable LOLOLOL will do ....much more to come=)
nice test. I love ballistic tests. Please make more!
@PreppersTactics Yes=)
I would have liked to see what the retained weight of each round was in addition to velocity/energy comparison
@GY6- I hear you dude. They piss me off to. But yeah if you do the auto glass test try to do like ballistic gel behind it so you can see what the bullet is doing once it goes threw the glass. That's gonna be SWEET!
Oops, forgot about the spinning part. I use 230 gr Ranger T +p in my RIA 1911 Tactical, can't get any better than that.
Love the ballistic gel tests. Do I dare suspect some ZombieMax testing in the future? Those pesky zombies are always around, gotta be ready.
Thank you=)
Either will do the job on a crazed, maniacal tweaker
Maybe I missed it, but what was the barrel length/firearm used in the test?
USP45
Hey great vid! Subscribed. I love the PDX1 as well. I also like speer gold dot. Can you incorporate them into your next test if possible? I look forward to the next test vids! Keep up the great work.
So the petals on an expanded jhp create cleaner wounds, which close up better resulting in less blood loss. A blunt hollow point pushing through instead of slicing through meat would create more trauma.
You should do a lot more ballistics gel tests, so I don't have to.
I have them in 40 and 45 no issues here
@premiertremere SO VERY TRUE=) Yeah 45's aren't cheap...but man they sure are fun=) I might be testing the Grizzly Xtreme 45acp rounds in one of my next videos...that should be a killer test...
@premiertremere dude i just got 1000 rnds of .40 s&w 180gn HST and they kick some serious ass. expansion is HUGE, wound channles are like ground pork, and they average about 13-15 inches of penetration on a pig carcass ( witch is very similar to human). by the way... HOOAH!
@donthebodyguard THanks....No I havent? Where can I buy some? I will test it if you send me some 45acp rounds
@shifty198885 Thank you=) Yeah they are some serious rounds!
@brayden427 Thanks
@mainscoop250 Yeah it is a beast of a round=)...I just did a PDX1 vs. Pig heart in ballistics gel...should be uploaded next week
You should TRUST your life to LOTS AND LOTS OF PRACTICE 1st. Then, after knowing you are ready to put rounds on your target, I would TRUST MY LIFE WITH BOTH OF THESE ROUNDS.
@Isbom87 Sounds like a BA round=) I wish I had a .40 so I could test them LOL but good to know=)
@FrznFury27 That is coming up soon=)
is the basic jhp the Winchester white box.
millimeters.. what are we in Europe or something.... cool vid man.. they both did well for what they were
As a rule of thumb, do you prefer a heavier grain round as opposed to a lighter grain faster round in a home defense application? Assuming you're staying with the same caliber.
@PreppersTactics I do, but only when i am able to. It gets hard and sort of dried out after a week or so and is unusable.
PDX-1 is indeed basically just a bonded Ranger--if you can get the Rangers cheaper, I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger on them instead (pun fully intended).
PDX looks the same as Ranger bonded's. Slow the video, and check out the "temporary cavatations"
on the border with Mexico. Plenty of water jugs out there to help aid the border crossers, but those could be emptied quicker with a JHP
