This season finale had me damn near in tears this whole episode. Seeing how Ellie was brought into the world, hearing about Joel's attempt at taking his own life, seeing Joel take Ellie out of the hospital and back to Wyoming....it all just had me feeling so emotional. It's amazing just how much the dynamic has changed between Joel and Ellie. In the beginning he saw her as a package that needed to be delivered, and by the end of this season, we see this parent-child, father-daughter relationship develop and it was just really beautiful to see. I was so split on what Joel did at the hospital, I understand why he did it, but at the same time it was selfish -- the needs of a few over the needs of many. However, if I was in his shoes, I'm not sure I would've done anything different. I never realized how invested I was going to become in these fictional characters, and that by the end of the season I'd be in tears lol. I really loved this show and I can't wait for the next season.

I have to be honest, purely from a male perspective...A T800 has NOTHING on Joel. That being said...virtually everyone has lied to Ellie...even Riley lied to her at first. This was an incredibly emotional episode. Seeing Joel BE her Father...fighting for her like a Father...very powerful. Was it for his own feelings? Yes, at least in part. His admission to Ellie about the bullet scar, and what really kept him going during their journey...yeah, that makes my face wet too. I also see that Anakin has escaped his facehugger (😆) and is standing next to Superman (😁). Also, LOVE the shirt!! ❤❤ Lauren, as Always...wonderful, stunning, emotional reaction to a likewise incredible episode. Gold on Gold again. Thank you for ALL that you do❤. Peace, light and love.🥰✌️❤🧡💜

Marlene should explain the stakes and chances to Ellie and give her the choice, and at least a few days to make a decision. Then Ellie should have the chance to talk to Joel and to explain to him her decision. Marlene did nothing of that, she took the choice from Ellie and she pushed Joel to do the only thing he was programmed to do. And then Joel lied to Ellie, 'cause he had hope to save her the guilt. So, everything that happened was IMO Marlene's fault. She betrayed Elie, she betrayed Anna, she betrayed Joel, and she betrayed humanity, because she was so blinded by her "noble cause" to save the people that she forgot about the humans.

Joel has exactly two priorities - (1) to keep Ellie alive and (2) to make her happy, and he will do whatever it takes to accomplish that.

I always love your reactions, Lauren, and this time's no different. Now that it's over, this covered the first game (now re-released as Part I, contra Part II). The major story arc points were the same though the show cuts out a lot of gaming and combat, which was understandable for fitting it all into 9 eps of tv, but leaves the show feeling like both Joel and Ellie aren't as capable survivors and killers of zombies/raiders/hunters as they are in the game. Some of the additions were minor but neat, like with the various major VAs of the game having roles.
But yeah, I think the end made you feel precisely what was intended.

Marlene should have given Ellie a choice and let Joel speak to her. Joel only threatened Marlene after she (refused) to let him see or speak to Ellie. Ellie was already unconscious in surgery. Making it crystal clear Marlene had no intentions of waking Ellie up so Joel could ask her if she was ok with sacrificing herself.
So people condemning Joel need to ask themselves if they think Ellie deserved a choice and what if that was your child. I personally think Ellie deserved a choice.
I think Ellie would be willing to sacrifice herself dispite the chance of failure. However I also think Ellie would expect Marlene to give her the choice. Unfortunately that's not what happened.
People vilifying Joel are overlooking that and other factors. In this very episode Ellie told Joel she wanted to finish it. Meaning risking theirs lives to find and help the fireflies with vaccine/cure. However she also told him she would follow him anywhere he wants afterwards. Meaning Ellie expected to be able to help the fireflies than leave (very much alive) with Joel.
Remember Marlene (refused) to give Ellie a choice or let Joel see or talk to her. You should be furious with Marlene for not letting Joel speak to Ellie and ask her what she wants.
I'v already said I think Ellie would have agreed and Joel would have been very upset but, atleast they'd have a chance to say goodbye.
Had Marlene let Joel talk to Ellie it is unlikely he'd go on a killing spree.
However Joel would do one of two things. Leave anḍ unfortunately Kill himself or hopefully return to his brother Tommy. I ask again would you let someone kill your child especially when not given a choice?
    I wouldn't

Ellie is either family or cargo.
She can't be both. I say she's family. Joel shouldn't have lied to Ellie. However anyone vilifying Joel for saving Ellie is declaring that dispite everything Joel and Ellie went through together she is nothing more than Biological cargo to be dropped off at a lab. That's F-up people
It will make zero sense for HBO in season 2 to have Ellie more angry with Joel for saving her life, than with Marlene for denying her a choice and trying to kill her.
It makes no sense because Ellie spent the entire season 1 trying to get close to Joel. Like Ellie most of the audience wanted Joel to see her as family not cargo. On multiple occasions including episode 9 Ellie talked with him about a future after helping the Fireflies. Meaning she expected to live. When Joel finally see's Ellie like a daughter and rightfully protects her from being murdered. A portion of the audience suddenly decides Ellie only ever was Biological cargo. So how dare he save her life. Those people are heartless.
By the way science says Joel was right. The premise for killing Ellie is BS because Parasitic fungi infect the entire body except the brain. The Fungi isolates the brain from the body to control its host like a puppet.
Meaning Ellie would have died for nothing.

  • @jobanh7ify

Joel the one man army, Jesus Christ it was about time we see him. Now, to be fair the show tell us from the beginning that a cure was no go, making a vaccine out of Ellie wasn’t happening and here is why, her condition couldn’t be passed on to someone else because of the unique circumstances of her birth. The game hinted that in notes and recordings scattered around the hospital that the fireflies tried to make a vaccine with people like Ellie before and didn’t worked out, and the most important fact of all, fungus are living organisms, there’s no way to create a vaccine for them. So this “dooming humanity” doesn’t apply here cuz humanity was already doomed to begin with, now the hope of Ellie, if she ever have kids, it would be the birth of humans born with the same mutation she has, and for the rest of us, well… we are the last of us.

Fungus on the other hand are more complex, one of them ( I can’t remember the name at the back of my head despite being a nurse) can set up shop in your lungs, you’ll ended up with a partner for life and a prescription for the breathing problems you will have, also there’s no cure for that either. This is a really important take, and it surprises me that very few seem to care about it. We're told from the first minutes of the show, that if a fungus gains the capability to take over our bodies, we lose. It's confirmed again in the episode where we meet Ibu Ratna. She literally tells them that there IS no vaccine to be made, there IS no medicine, she tells them to bomb the city and the people in it because this is a fungus and it can't be killed the way we kill diseases. It's important to note that she's not some cold hearted military general who's used to making hard decisions about killing people. She's just a scientist, and she knows that we can't win.
Obviously the game makes this a lot clearer because of the background information we get while running around in the hospital, but I still think the show made it pretty clear.
Even now, in 2023, we don't have a vaccine against any fungus, and fungal infections are still difficult and time consuming to treat, and mostly consists of starving the organism. Even with 20 years of additional scientific research post the in universe breakout in 2003, we don't have a solution for this. The idea that some random doctors in a run down hospital with no equipment, no material and presumably no scientific background in this field would be able to invent a vaccine is laughable.
Ironically, if the Fireflies hadn't experimented on the few immune people they found, a new generation of cordyceps immune humans would've been far more likely. In a way, they might be more guilty of dooming humanity than Joel could ever be.

    • @gluuuuue
      @gluuuuue Год назад +1

Yeah, I agree. I know Druckmann has since commented, even before the show adaptation, that the player should contemplate Joel's decision on the assumption that a vaccine would have definitely worked. And I think most people have been through these sorts of moral dilemma exercises, sometimes even in high school.
I don't think the narrative, as it was constructed, both here and in the game, really supported that assumption, and certainly not as strongly as Druckmann seems to have wanted us to be forced to decide between. It's just too reasonable that what the story itself has revealed to us that it's either really not that guaranteed or that there're even reasons why it's highly unlikely.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next season.

The fact that Ellie was born around lies it's so sad, then she was lied by FEDRA, then by Riley (and in the same time, she told the truth to her), then she lies to Tess, then she is lied by Joel (ep. 3), and so on. That thing that Maria said to her "the only people that can betray us, are the ones we trust" makes so much sense and is so sad. And also, I hope the debate doesn't go to whether the cure have worked or not, that's not the point of the show and the finale, Joel believed that the cure would've work, and still made the choice of don't lose another infant, which is realistic in the first place, he is a dad after all.
It's a hard (and fascinating) choice to think about it, the moral compass and everything, the fireflies lied to ellie to save the world, Joel lied to Ellie to justify his actions, Marlene being "selfish" by the greater good, Joel being selfish by the fact that he can't lose another daughter.
That lie is sad because it feels like a breaking point on their relationship, I can only imagine that it's gonna haunt them in the next season, and it's gonna be so sad

It was pretty clear to me, well imho, that Ellie knows she wil likely die, but wants her life to have meaning for everyone else that she has lost, but can't tell Joel directly because he will stop her. That's why she needs to confront him in the last scene, to resolve the surprise that she is taken away by him. Joel says "I could not have been more ready" about the time he shot his face. Ellie is also ready.

In the end I don't think it matters whether or not Ellie would've agreed to the surgery, fact of the matter is that she wasn't given a choice, which means that Marlene wanted to murder her. If she was so sure Ellie would've said yes, she could've just asked.

When I was little, my mom took me to the zoo and when we got to the giraffe enclosure, there were a bunch of people feeding the giraffes, so I did the same thing; I grabbed a branch full of leaves and streched out my tiny, little arms. One of the giraffes bent down and started munching on the top of the branch I was holding. Then maybe not even 2 seconds later, a zoo employee walked over and snatched the branch from my hand and angrily threw it to the ground (he did the same thing to everyone else that was holding a branch). Anyway, I was so startled and terrified when he did it -- I was, like, 6 years old at the time or something like that -- and so overall, my personal experience with giraffe-feeding was not a positive one, haha! 😆

This has been a great series of reactions, and it's been fun to watch along with you. I personally side with Joel on this one, but that may be my bias coloring my opinion. I've been subjected to some of the worst behavior humans can inflict on each other, and I have a rather pessimistic view of humankind (we don't deserve to be saved, imo). The thing with the ending for me is that I don't think either Joel or Marlene was actually sure they were doing the right thing. Neither of them was willing to wait for Ellie to wake up and ask her opinion. And from someone who spent years fighting and arguing with adults over what was best for my body when I was considered too young to have a say, Ellie is more than old enough to decide for herself. Both of them were afraid she wouldn't give an answer they liked. It wasn't as if time was a factor. Civilization carried on in various forms for 20 years. Delaying the surgery for another day or two wouldn't have changed anything.
Of course, I'm trying to leave the game out of it and concentrate on the series in this case. In the game there are hidden bits of lore telling us that the Fireflies have tried this on multiple other immune people and failed, so it feels less like dooming the world and more unambiguously like saving Ellie from a guaranteed death sentence without purpose. The show leaves it a bit more ambiguous.
Props to Pedro and Bella for their work on this series. Both were absolutely fantastic and really deserve all the awards. I hope that Bella still plays the role of Ellie in season two (I've not played the second game, I just heard Ellie is older, and I hope they don't feel the need to cast an actress that looks more grown up).

Here is what a RUclips reactor who is a mother said about what Joel did, at the age of 14 Ellie is still a child and should not have to make that kind of decision until she is older. The reactor said she would take the responsibility of telling Ellie the lie but would tell her when she was old enough to make the decision for herself. She said she would except all the breach of trust it would entail so that Ellie would not have to feel responsible for any more death, that the mom would take on all of that herself.

Marlene and the fireflies were also being selfish and didn't have much regard for Ellie making the choice.

Joel definitely did something wrong by lying but so did the fireflies.

  • @scottls

I am sure many will disagree but the way I see it, Joel HAD to lie to Ellie. He felt he had to protect Ellie because if he would have told her the truth then one of 2 things were bound to happen. Either she accepted the lie and forgave Joel making her live with the guilt of withholding the cure to mankind in exchange for her life, or just the opposite, not forgiving Joel for what he did, breaking off their father, daughter relationship, and possibly losing another daughter as Ellie would try to return to Salt Lake City and sacrifice her life for the mere chance that the cure might be successful. Joel couldn't allow that to happen. In his mind he was protecting her from taking that chance. From again losing the one person that meant so much to him. Yes, Joel ultimately sacrificed himself for the sinns he committed, but at least he and Ellie got a chance to live those 4 to 5 years together in relative piece and enjoy a little happiness together. As a father that has lost my first child... I would have done the same!

Great reaction Lauren! It is true, Joel was acting in a selfish manner. The instinct of a parent to do anything to protect their child outweighs moral or ethical contradictions in the mind of the parent. And no, Joel is not her bio dad, but one thing the show seems to skip, that the game made clear; Joel and Ellie spent at least a year, mostly just the two of them fighting side by side to survive. The show seems to gloss over the amount of time they spent together. A parent who'd lost a child and an orphan. It's clear that there is only one way anyone is taking Ellie from him. World be damned. And part of that comes from his self perceived failure to protect Sarah. Was Joel wrong? From a wider perspective, yes clearly. However, Joel is this emotionally broken 💔 man who finally sees a reason to give a damn in Ellie. He hadn't even fully let his walls down with Tess, and it was clear there was more than a working partnership there. Prior to Ellie, Tess was the closest person to Joel, and once he found out her fate, though it clearly hurt him, he left her without real hesitation. He couldn't do that with Ellie. No way. Anyway, feel I'm starting to ramble. Thanks again Lauren! Much love! See you in the next one!

What pissed me off is that Marlene didn't even ask Ellie what she wanted so she pushed Joel's hand. (greater good my ass). Talk about a morally ambiguous ending.
On one hand, I get it. Humanity took away what mattered most to Joel and after finding something that close in Ellie again, he wasn't going to let it happen again. I don't know what it's like to be a a father but I would like that someday and having to put myself in Joel's shoes, I'd probably do the same? Not to mention, the Fireflies weren’t giving her much of a choice in the matter.
But then again, neither was Joel. It was still a…..selflessly selfish choice that not only doomed the entire world but robbed Ellie of whatever hope she had left for it as well as the choice to choose. It might be refreshing to some people, seeing them finally be together in this "new beginning" but keep this in mind: it's based on a lie.
    All of it.

I don’t have that good of an opinion of humanity in general. As individuals, yes but as a whole humanity is questionable as being worthy enough to survive. It was clear ,from the beginning that Joel is not a humanitarian. That’s why he was able to survive. He was, however, like Bill very protective of his loved ones. He made his decision to save Ellie instantly and let humanity take care of itself. Ellie was Marlene’s childhood best friend’s daughter and she promised to take care of her. What Elle’s mother meant by “ take care” was to nurture, love and protect. What Marlene did was not that. She turned her over to the enemy ,to be raised as a brutal federal policeman. Being a Firefly was much more important to Marlene than raising Ellie. She had no feelings for Ellie and after finding out she was immune,Marlene saw Ellie as nothing more than a specimen that may save humanity. Joel came to love Ellie and see her as a daughter. She was a fighter and fought hard to survive. She was more like Joel and Bill than his biological daughter had been. She was his soul daughter. The two of them were uniquely equipped to survive in this new world. Joel understood Ellie on a fundamental level more than Ellie understood herself. She was a young girl, who like all young teens had one foot in childhood and one foot in adulthood. She was fanciful and idealistic like all children but at the same time would do whatever was necessary to survive and protect her loved ones. She wanted to complete what she believed was her purpose,to save humanity but never expected it to mean to sacrifice her life. She had no idea what having a life meant. To have a family. To have a mate. To have her own children and be part of a community. To be amongst people who would care for her. Her experiences with having a life were very limited. They were ,also ,mostly the wrong experiences. So.. naturally, Ellie thought she was not worth that much. Joel knew Ellie was worth everything, the kind of person she was ,was rare and very valuable. He did understand that ,as a parent,he had to make the decision for her. It was his decision to make and he chose the right decision. He chose the right decision for Ellie, for himself and for life itself. To live is what life is all about. Live and keep struggling, keep moving forward and never give up. Maybe the doctors ,Marlene and whatever science they still had left could find a cure and maybe not. Ellie ‘s cells were an experiment for them. Harvesting them at the expense of Ellie’s life was worth it to them. It was not worth it to Joel and he was the one making the decision. I would do the same. Ellie’s was a life full of potential and she deserved the opportunity to live to her fullest potential and not have her life cut short for a cause that wasn’t even certain.

What Joel did was technically selfish, but I honestly don't think he had a single thought about what he wanted. He loves Ellie, she's his child now. They were trying to kill her, he had to kill them first, that's it. Parental instinct carried him through that hospital rampage, not calculated thought.
Furthermore, him lying to protect her proves he loves her. Cause that when you know you're really a parent, when your child's survival is more important than how they feel about you. He knew that would likely break their relationship, he knew it would eventually lose her trust, but she's alive. That's all that matters to him.

      @alice45-fgd-456drt Год назад

Exactly this. Most people, actually most animals of any species, will kill to protect their young. It's survival instinct, it's ingrained into our very beings. I doubt any of the people who think Joel is the bad guy would be willing to see their own children murdered for science.
Parents lie to protect our feelings, my parents didn't care much about me but even they lied to protect me. When I got older, they told me about things because I was ready to hear it. I'm not sure why anyone thinks that telling an already deeply traumatized 14-yearold with severe survivor's guilt that "hey btw, I killed a dozen people to save you" would be the right choice, but I can guarantee it's not.

He damned all chances for a cure, because he couldn't let go.
However, the Fireflies never gave Ellie the option of making the choice they were so sure she would make.
    They couldn't risk it.
So they decided to kill One, to MAYBE, save many (They would never save everyone).
Ergo, by taking away Ellies choice, they are villains and murderers.
