Zainab Badawi made me laugh hardly when she said i musn`t slip again when she was showing, touching and narrating admiringly about the ancient city wall. 30:28-30:59 even if it was deliberate, it honestly made me want to watch till the end. Seriously i enjoyed the part where Joke Silva, a Yoruba actress danced and was giving some explanations. She is so eloquent and lively. 22:48-23:35 The whole of Nigeria is interesting.

Amazing and awesome subject matter. I wish it was introduced to children in schools at an early age in the west. This would help children to have a foundation for their identity. An identity that was and is purposely erased even now. Theses videos speak loud and clear . Thank you for all your wonderful work.
I was eager to hear comments about the Benin kingdom cause most that saw it were in awe. Would have really liked more on the Igbos too, and at least something on the Ijaws and more on the history of Lagos. I've been doing a bit of reading and different accounts say the Aworis were indigenous to Lagos and they weren't Yorubas, also that the Benin people got to Lagos first and also some Ijaws before Lagos was densely populated by Yorubas. But really good one
Your history is wrong. You need to go do more research. Sentiment is clouding you judgement. Your research is to prove Lagos is not a Yoruba land instead of researching with an open mind and logic. Firstly the people called Yoruba are heterogenous. It is a nation of different Nations with different cultures. It's not until 18th that these nations are group together and given that name. Now to Lagos, if you say Aworis are not Yorubas, the other Nations can be said not to be Yorubas. Question you should ask is what makes a nation Yoruba? Are Itsekiri Yorubas? Why or why not? Lagos state is a combination of towns and villages. Epe, the Lekkis, Ikorodu are all Ijebu towns. While Ikeja to Ojo axis are Awori. Badagary is Egun. Lagos Island which is called Eko or Isale eko is a settlement for many ethnicities which ranges from the Ijebus, The Ilajes, The Benins, The slave returness etc. Isale Eko has many quarters, one of them is Benin quarters, the slaves returnee too had their quaters, the Ilajes too, the Ijebus etc. Saying Benin founded Lagos state is lie from hell. Founding a quarter in Isale Eko doesn't you own Lagos state, other people founded quaters too. Just so you know, Oba of Eko is not the King of Lagos state but King of Lagos Island (where you have though quaters), and not a first class Oba. The Egun from Badagry to Benin Republic used to be under Oyo empire (note, not Yoruba empire), there was no word like Yoruba in 17th century. Origin of Yoruba might be from Hausa word Yeriba, because they referred to people in that axis as such. Yoruba is group of Nation from Ondo state bother (on paper, but some are in Delta and Edo state) all the way to Ghana. Ogun state enveloped Lagos. However, with you level of reason, none of these nations (the Ijebus of Epe, the Ilajes, the Awori, the Egbas) strolled to the neighboring town, which is a walking distance. Yoruba is just like Nigeria, a Nation with my ethnicities or nations. Just like someone saying Gbegiri with Amala is Yoruba food, technically they are right, but it is Oyo state or Oyo nation's food. Another thing to know is Lagos island is what is original name is Eko, the white called it Lagos, however the state is named after the quaters on the Island as Lagos state whick similar to naming Ondo state after Ondo town. Founding a quater in Ondo town doesn't mean you founded Ondo state. Same with Oyo state. Ondo state is a state of many Nations, same with Lagos state. A state is just a political geographical grouping of Nations or easy administration.
@@hapexconsulting3789 calm down. I've found that Awori are indeed a sub-group of the Yoruba, I know about the other settlers and the returnee slaves and the Edo and Nupe. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, the truth is all that matters.
@@hapexconsulting3789 the only group I'm aware of with Yoruba ancestry in Delta is the Itsekiris' who emigrated from Ogun state and mixed with some locals in Delta to form a new tribe (fasinating history by the way). I'm not aware of the Yorubas in Edo. I wouldn't mind learning.

Great content Zeinab. But I think this documentary did a great injustice to the Igbos. They were grossly underreported. What about the archeological heritage of Awka, Nri and Nsukka? What about the history of the ancient Nri kingdom and many more?
I'm not from nigeria but I study 10 african languages. In my studies I found that Nigeria's history is older than Egypts. Linguistically igbo and yoruba languages are old . Many igbo and yoruba words are found in. english,Hawaiian, amharic. Most of all the egyptian names of gods and goddesses originate in nigerian linguistics. African linguistics are very organized.
@Heru Behudety that's what I've been doing for the last 7 years. Trying to use african linguistics to unravel africas past. From my studies I recognized a commonality that is purely african. Linguistics is like a trail ,that is the best source of preserving oral history. Artifacts can only explain so much . But egyptologist are scared of touching African linguistics because they know it will only show an advanced system of languages in subsaharan africa. The main african languages that created kemetic languages are igbo,yoruban,zulu/shona/chichewa. Ethiopian languages are only made up of igbo words. What kemetic people did was preserve the oral history of africa to document the 300,000 years of african intellectual knowledge. Kemetic people relied only on african knowledge , that originated from the heavens . Linguistics can prove what pharaoh was from what tribe.
@Heru Behudety I'm serious building a library of africas knowledge. I looking for individuals that also want to learn and study the linguistics. I also found the african origins of Judaism .
@@pejuodunlami238 yoruba people may say "every 5 5 days" because we count the first day twice. like if it's Monday and you are talking about next week Monday you might call it "8 days from now", because you are already counting this Monday as day 1....making Sunday day 7, and next Monday would be day 8. Badawi you should also visit Uganda. The country has great history through the great kingdom of Buganda which satrted in the late 12th century and do still exist today as well as Bunyoro Kingdom
People already live in the Eko that beni man said was founded. We should understand that every people will tell history in their own way or according to what they were told by their ancestors. The Eko that beni man talked about is Lagos Business District which is Idumota area the stool of one of the king. It is not entire Lagos of Today. There is no argument about that. When you snatch a piece of land you can call it by your name. just like Nigeria territory was snatched by the british and call it Nigeria, when Portuguese came they combined many communities and call it Lagos. Awori are one the First Yoruba to reach Lagos, so if Awori call it OKO it is understandable. All Lagos land as of today are owned and sold by the Yoruba people in Lagos, that tells that Beni king dont own any part of Lagos but they just install a king there in before the British arrived during conquest of communities. same way British install themselves to rule over Nigeria. This is history that some people will contest but I think it needs no argument. It is good that we have this type history that shape us and we should use it to foster unity and peace between ourselves.

Interesting documentary. Would have been nice to hear and see a bit more about the Igbo civilisations (Arochukwu, Nri, Ohafia).
For reasons best known to her, she could only interview someone in Lagos. That's totally unjust/unfair for a race of a people.
many thanks to Zeinab Badawi, UNESCO and BBC for such a magnificent documentary series. I have learnt so much. I wish this was taught in primary and secondary school through out Africa. Our people are fed bogus history.
Dear Mrs. Zeinab.... you have made a respectable landmark to the History of Africa documenting a great civilization being the cradle of humanity. The history will always remember your documentary being as great as the African civilization.
Benin Bronzes are some of the most impressive artistic creations
Love this series! This is really great work on promoting African cultures.
Kano, the ancient city, very unique in culture, hospitality and investment potentialities as it has the largest and oldest market in west Africa also the city is Nigerias` center of commerce. 22:48-23:35 The whole of Nigeria is interesting.
i love their accent. the king has a nice accent as well.
Love the queen accent
This is such a rich episode.
I'm filled with awe just to learn about these mighty kingdoms. I loved the Queen and how cool she is.
I loved how the actress is empowering women, it is evident that these beliefs come from so long ago.
I love watching this, this is my wonderful great Kingdom of Benin I appreciate this video
I do love every program BBC are doing in relation to cultural backgrounds and ideologies. Especially the ones analysing and reminding us of our history.
Educational and informative. Thanks Zeinab.
Thank You...Zeinab Badawi...extraordinary wonderful approach with people!!!!

This series is really cool. Thanks, Zeinab!
One Africa, one state one United Africa one love . There's a natural mystique moving in the land
Thanks you I really appreciate it Hassan momodu from Nigeria in Edo State in avelle here today
Amazing and awesome subject matter. I wish it was introduced to children in schools at an early age in the west. This would help children to have a foundation for their identity. An identity that was and is purposely erased even now. Theses videos speak loud and clear . Thank you for all your wonderful work.
The Oba is to Ghanaians a King. His way is amazing indeed.
At least this African story is being told by one of our people ❤️thank you
Excellent job by Zeinab, highly appreciated
There is no Yoruba in Edo. Benin kingdom established Eko and was recognized as Benin kingdom territory till her annexation by British.
Nigerians are amongst the most gorgeous people in Africa.
Please get the original bronze head of Queen Idah back from the British in exchange for the replica.

Igbo people are very entrepreneurial skills and very talented .
They are from KINGDOM of Benin

Watch and stop blowing trumpet, it's not a contest. You see competition in everything. Hmmmmmn
Whilst Oprah and her ilk are busy denigrating, I would say this is time better spent. Well done.
Great content Zeinab. But I think this documentary did a great injustice to the Igbos. They were grossly underreported. What about the archeological heritage of Awka, Nri and Nsukka? What about the history of the ancient Nri kingdom and many more?
Am very upset 😢 she gave excuses not talk about the Igbos and spent All her time to talk to Hausas n oba n emir
I also found the african origins of Judaism .
urbanization and farming together should be a lesson learned in USA, and throughout the world. Go Lagos
this is a well done documented program . we need more of this not only in Africa but all over the world . well done Zainab Badawi.
Thank you BBC..Thank you zeinab badawi for bringing ou our history...I will watch all. episodes right now I'm on episode 11
Yoruba people also have our 4-day traditional week, similar to Igbo
No, we have 5. It is called Øørun. That's why weeks are called Ørøørun where each market week is signified
@@pejuodunlami238 yoruba people have a traditional 4 day week, it's a fact
@@proverbalizer go
Just like in Bini.
But that's just a particular way of speaking/counting....it' doesn't mean a modern week actually has 8 days.
THE GREATEST OF ALL OF ALL IS OUR AFRICAN SPIRITUALITY...
Thank you Zainab!
This is beautiful
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the comments section 🤣🤣🤣
Africans were intelligent, innovative and united and had a rich culture and heritage, but western civilization came to distort and steal our rich natural resources. Well done Zeinab Badawi for the apt documentary.
loved the video but. I just wonder why are all the original artifacts in the British museums seems to me the British took all their history and culture and displayed it as there own. I truly hope these beautiful people can get all their artifacts back in their own country.
They'll never give them back. They rather keep them all and charge people for viewing them at the museum.
props to Edo of Benin. They represented.
Taken? Defeated? Invaded and stolen sounds more like a correct description.
What a interesting and informative programme, Thank you Zeinab Badawi, for making it and I am so glad to see you are alive and well.
Thank you for that words of wisdom: we don't measure illiteracy by means of not speaking English. 👩🎓👩🎓👩🎓
they also said they don't measure literacy only by means of the written word, but also by oral literacy.
Another great job and video!
BRAVA! ZEINAB BADAWI!
GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS!!!
Lagos original name is EKO. Which in Edo language means "Camp". Lagos is a Portuguese name..

They do this with al continents. All of them have regions that have their own climate, geology, people, culture, language,...etc. Its only normal to do that...
@@badmanthings Can you tell me what the countries of the European Sub-Continent have in common, that allows them to be lumped together.
@@therealgodessisis In Europe you have Western-Europe (Anglo & Germanic countries), Southern-Europe (Greek and Latin speaking countries in the Mediterranean), Eastern-Europe (Slavic countries), and Northern-Europe (Scandinavian countries). Its not rocket-science....
Thereal GodessIsis . Agreed. You also have this "Anglophone", then "Francophone", "Lusophone"" Africa, as if a Black person, slave, colonized, formerly colonized' s identity lies with that of his/her previous colonial masters, implying that Black Africans must or should always be defined through someone elsés. Badawi you should also visit Uganda. The country has great history through the great kingdom of Buganda which satrted in the late 12th century and do still exist today as well as Bunyoro Kingdom
The Yorubas founded EKO, not LAGOS, it was originally called oko because the Aworis were farmers there.
Stop lying to yourself lol..
Why are you still sleeping by now , so you don't understand your History 😞
Stop sleeping
