How can we discuss alleviating poverty without discussing the causes - aka reasons for globalisation failures and successes! Vandana is on point! Corruption is also a 2 way deal as elaborated by John Perkins
Yes, I love her too, she pushed the British Prime Minister to say something that he probably didn't want to admit, that if the African people stopped selling their raw materials and owned the resources from raw material all the way to finished product they could negotiate full value of their goods and make all the profit selling on the world market instead of sending their raw materials off to be processed in Europe, If they cut off the colonial middleman they can make all the profit on the stock market.
On the film presented before the debate: Why was Spain singled out in colonization that resulted in poverty ... BBC was cunning in omitting Britain as the greatest colonizer of which almost 50% of the world it conquered and looted ... from South Asia to Africa, from the MiddleEast to everywhere!
Tony is making a very crucial point but because it touches the host country, it is being ignored. Poverty is a result of interactions of many sub-systems, thus to solve poverty one needs to be holistic, we have to understand the major system which was put in place during the clash between Moors and Europe.
chapmasi, I thought the same thing.. when the valueable parts of the discussion was coming to the fore she just cuts in and really hinders the discussion rather than facilitates it. these are prominent leaders with experience and answers or vital questions to pose, I would have really like to have heard their ideas more fully explored
How can you edit the subtitles for this? I really want to do it myself because it's a shame that such an interesting topic isn't getting its points across accurately, especially for people who aren't as proficient in english to understand the debators with a pretty strong accent.
Debates on poverty, unemployment, insecurity in the society, inequality, gender issues, educational issues etc. are so common in modern world, but the reality is that poverty, unemployment and other burning issues are getting increased on global scale, so talking is not enough, but we need a practical program to address these issues; it is unfortunate for humankind that people talk …talk…talk but no down-to-earth solutions.
We have to get to the root of the problem. The first has to do with the moral disposition of mankind. We need to stop talking politics and get back to what lies in the heart of man. Why does man feel he has the right to steal , kill and contribute to not only impoverishing his fellow man but also killing him? There are wars all over the world in the name of colonialism and imperialism. Man has the evil desire to control and invade his fellow man. Seizing his land and natural resources. If you look at this dilemma in a clear light you will see that poverty is evil, man is evil and this is the real reason for poverty. The next question is how does man reckon the evils that he himself perpetuates?
Poverty has causes deeply rooted in evolving human interests. In today’s society, the interpretations for why poverty exists have become intertwined in history, politics and the economy. The big question being asked-are people suffering needlessly?-deserves an answer.
I was looking for a video that helps me with the issue of the centrality of poverty in global governance. This video is it. Many thanks. It's a great debate - thanks to BBC. All panelists were great but I do agree Vandana put her finger right on the issues that matter the most, I think. I also agree with Tony Blair and the Nigerian lady about the importance of good governance.
What the practical Tony Blair said at the beginning of debate "easy access to technology and electricity to younger population" was what agreed by everyone at the end by pointing out a revolution in the telephone sector as an example. Respect!
Shiva has lived and worked in India and has experience apart from being a scientist. Tony is a tory or even a neocon besides being a colonialist. He talks but should and must be ignored.
They talk about Latin America and Asia but no Latin American was invited and no one from China? But they did invite Tony Blair! Corporate circus show imo.
Excellent discussion. I fully agree that we need to deal with corruption issues in these developing countries. we need structures and systems that facilitates proper governance and obedieance to laws
+Jinine Laishramcha EXACTLY. These very people (heads of NGO's) are actually funded by the elite to continue speaking (or must I says MISREPRESENTING) the world's poor. Thanks for identifying a black sheep amongst us. Actually, it does not require too big of an IQ to identify people like that. Thanks again!
Whilst a lot of good debaters are included on this show.... I find the host quite irritating and incredibly subjective..... whenever a guest starts down a path of promoting something SHE personally doesn't like or approve of, she interrupts and brings in someone else. The whole debate turned into YET ANOTHER promotion of superficial "equality" and Maxist Ideals...... just how the BBC likes it.
Fact that we aren't watching these debates on daily basis in today's world is one of many reasons we are being deprived of the information about reality and more and more glamorise content is pushed in our social media platforms. The reason we will stay poor coz we are just used to overlook the harsh reality.
So basically the dutch company that creates listening tests for high schools has used this video to ask like 20 questions about it during my listening test a week ago. Lol
AN EXCELLENT MEETING TO DISCUSS POVERTY. One point not mentioned was this! The total amount of wealth that is squirreled away to avoid taxation If discovered and retrieved by the Nation's Government. Would bring most of Humanity out of poverty.
After many reflections I have narrowed down the reasons of poverty into 2 points. The First one being greed to have more and the second one is the Envy of things that you do not possess.
My Economics prof put it best when he asked the class: "What are the causes of poverty?" He paused and then said what we were all thinking: "Besides not having enough money."
Before the fall of Somalia, it was not possible for a young man to have a family or a large party, but later he sought a young boy with the greatest man who wanted to take that man. It is one of the examples of male life in economic control and that it is not a mistake or misunderstandings for women and young women who have time to control the economy and what they do when they want to marry others. We have a good idea of what we want to say in this story. We want someone to write his name and his name, and it's a matter of Somali people again and we pray that it is not used for women, youth and economics, and what has caused the government system to change the system of government becomes a real system with ccd kenya by 15; 57pm
Really excellent debate. Actually we are very much busy in theoretical portion of the Economic of Poverty. We are calculating the different critical methods to describe the kinds and the dimension of the poverty. Moreover we are always talking about different rubbish methods to eradicate the poverty like: agro-processing industry, industrialization, globalization which have a significant effect to boost up the poverty. We need to concentrate into the job security and livelihood that would follow the thematic principle of Sustainable Development, need to strengthening the poor people with the power of sustainable livelihood in the multi-dimension way. We need to understand the ground reality of the development concern and promote the effective methods to eradicate the different dimension of poverty.
I didn't even start to watch it but can say something: WHY....JUST WHY are a bunch of people with 1000$ suits and silver chains talking about the misery and the unimaginable suffering of millions of people around the world?!?!
because they are the ones making decisions for the millions of people around the world, unfortunately. I heard them talking about democracy somewhere...?
They are rich but still think about the poverty and try to find some solutions, that’s good. The poor can not help themselves, they need support from others. They try to help them.
Unfortunately that expensive look portrays professionalism and world leaders need to portray professionalism and leadership. Showing up in a tee shirt would be inappropriate.
whats the point in having a debate about poverty without even mentioning the institutions in control of the money supply? aint that where of course the real political power and source of the problem is located...? ...aint it strange how they manage to completely ignore the worlds financial systems very basic mechanisms in any political debate ... ?
yesterday one guy told me watch bbc debates for improve my language. so i came here and wonder there are many who used to watch bbc debate for language improvements
i agree on tony blair.....with the existence of corroupt government...poverty will be just a dream full of obstacles to blame to too many people, org, company. its stupid that other people just dont want to say yes tony you are right...Instead they are in rush to point out their own thought..how sad?
Africa's problem is the same as Trinidad and Tobago. Petroleum, gas and petrochemical sectors are very capital intensive employing a few people. To boot, you still have to import foreign expatriates so the money largely goes to the Government. Very interestng debate though!
i agree with Tonny Blair when it comes to the question that tackles on Why do the economies of the African countries not changing? we need to look at governance and their policies that is to curb corruption, etc for example in this 2020 our Zim gvt is very corrupt and we need to redefine our gvt structures and get rid of some policies that takes us back and kills & bury corruption then embrace better policies and gvt that cater and open access to every citizens for growth
I think Tony Blair did well on this debate. He is consistently fair with ideas and judgement presenting constructive picture in that spectrum. I admire the way he answer and deliver factual statements with respect towards his/her opponents.
it feels good to know that Blair is a changed person with a strong concern about the poors and poverty... Human beings have been blessed with the capacity to mend their ways at any stage of life.
+BlueCheese747 Tony Blair and Bush are war criminals whose hands are tainted with blood of millions of Iraqi. They caused the arrival of ISIS, which pushed people to move as refugees. Brilliantly, USA hasnt signed for international court, as they clearly know they do crimes against humanity. With Donald Trump, world may go into a third world war!
Equality of growth vs. equality of opportunities vs. equality of power - these are really philosiphical questions... unfortunately they are just being thrown around carelessly-
Vandana Shiva comes from Hindu culture which gave Upanishads and Vedas which taught interconnectedness of our life and species. In monotheistic religions, humans are portrayed as masters of our Earth
I do not agree with the idea that land garbing is source of poverty. industrialization can't be established on air, land is important. in developed worlsd land is owned by few but still the people are rich. corruption and mismanagement is source of poverty in the world
Tadele Bento Why you think there was colonialism? Which were The colonising countries? Which were the colonised countries? I hope these questions gives you more indept understanding.
Foreign aid - Taxing the poorest Westerners to fund the richest Africans. When you give money to a foreign Government their main asset becomes you and not their own people.
I'm not sure where you live so I will just base it on the US. The US provides foreign aid in the form of economic and military to the following nations: Afghanistan Israel Egypt Jordan West Bank/Gaza Ethiopia South Sudan Malawi Uganda South Africa Nigeria Russia Iraq Tanzania Mexico Congo (Kinshasa) Haiti Lebanon Somalia Zambia Sudan Following the corruption index many of these nations rate in the top 50 for corruption and poverty. Primarily the developing nations in Africa. So long as financial aid is provided to these nations the leaders will not see their people as their primary source of income (assets). This has the effect of stunting entrepreneurship and genuine development in the economy and quality of life for all.
yeah, 4 years later, this video is now 4 years old, poverty exists everywhere, and nobody has done fuck-all about it. tax the richest 5% of people 5% more of their income, give it to the poorest, and there will be no more poor people. the richest will still have 95% of their money, they will still be INCREDIBLY rich, and people will have food in their stomachs, and maybe then they will stop dying?
I just love this Indian woman, she talks senses.

Hats off Vandana Shiva, truly an icon!
Ironically, the poor people even can't get the opportunity to participate in this debate.

Foreign aid -
Taxing the poorest Westerners to fund the richest Africans. When you give money to a foreign Government their main asset becomes you and not their own people.
could you explain what you mean by that. i need to know for an assignment
I'm not sure where you live so I will just base it on the US.
The US provides foreign aid in the form of economic and military to the following nations:
Afghanistan
Israel
Egypt
Jordan
West Bank/Gaza
Ethiopia
South Sudan
Malawi
Uganda
South Africa
Nigeria
Russia
Iraq
Tanzania
Mexico
Congo (Kinshasa)
Haiti
Lebanon
Somalia
Zambia
Sudan
Following the corruption index many of these nations rate in the top 50 for corruption and poverty. Primarily the developing nations in Africa.
So long as financial aid is provided to these nations the leaders will not see their people as their primary source of income (assets). This has the effect of stunting entrepreneurship and genuine development in the economy and quality of life for all.
