Scotto’s neck deep into converting his AE86 Corolla into a proper race car for Gymkhana GRiD this year, and it’s time to do some mad scientist stuff to that junkyard Ford diff! Making it fit means a shorter axle rod, a fancy carbon fiber clutch plate kit from Ford Racing, dual caliper Wilwood brakes, and of course taking a torch to the pumpkin. It actually makes sense if we explain the science stuff (probably).

I hope for Scotto’s sake this actually gets finished before the event
With the power of friendship this build will get done 👍
😂😂😂u got that right ...Scotto's habit of never ever finishing a project cannot be overlooked 😂😂
@@teammusketeers just applying some positive pressure 😂
It won't lol I bet the vr6 power plant will change also
@D&A Performance 🤣🤣🤣scotto is one of those anomalies where if he gets it done would be nothing short of a miracle 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Man this was such a banger episode. Perfect combo of random Scotto building things I never knew about, actual car progress, beauty shots, it really had it all. Well done boys.
the beauty shots were of Scotto
How bout if Scotto doesn’t finish the VR86 he has to run the 911 in Gymkhana grid 😅💀
Yes
If he doesn't finish in time... he's gotta compete in the Merkur
@@HooniganProjectGarage proper punishment 😂
@@HooniganProjectGarage he has to compete in a rental convertible ecoboost mustang, and then explain the damages in a insurance report later.
I love how Scotto simultaneously says how he doesnt know what he is doing and then confidently explains its the right way to do something lol :)
Jolly's Comments are always on point! and it is funny Scotto "teaches" how to do this, followed up by thanking Ron for the idea lol. We need a Scotto teaching vlog... Call it Scotto's Nut tricks
Scotto does have the best build videos. It’s not just funny but informative and entertaining. Even though he never finishes them the approach and technicality are on point 😂😂. Keep rockin dude we love it. 🤘
Dude Jameson is the man. Seems like a super knowledgable, chill guy. Would love to hear his background!
I imagine if the VR6 gets in there, that car will be one of the most fun things ever and SOUND AMAZING.
Don't forget to strengthen the rear strut towers, there prone to cracking with coilovers IIRC
good excuse to make a built in strut brace in to the cage
So I have this exact same setup in my 86 with a beams swap and 7 years of hard drifting since it has been built I haven't noticed anything but as Niels said good excuse for something cool looking 8)
@@MrBlockohwhen you shorten the long side of the axle housing, does the new overall length equal the 86 axle? Or are we shortening the 8.8 just to fit under the 86 and not to match the axle sizes. Thanks!
"fully built roller"
*_Merkur slowly creeps in_*
Love the progress Scotto is making on this car, can't wait to see the finished product!!! Keep plugging away!
I'm really looking forward to seeing Zack rinse all these Grid cars in Gymkhana with his blatantly-not-Grid drag truck. He absolutely has to do at least one Grid race in it
Or roll it on the first corner…
@@HooniganProjectGarage Either way, I'm here for it
I love Scotto, but this is a lot! I’m rooting for him to finish, but not betting on him 😂❤
Sounds like the story of his life.
@@HooniganProjectGaragehe's got a kid now, so we know he's finished at least once.
The AOL login animation gave me pause lol, one part nostalgic and the other part a hatred long since extinguished.
I thought I was the only one 😂😂
"The Volksrollaford" should be a sight to behold when finished. Yay!
This is my favorite build of the bunch! So tasty with the choices and footage of it all. Thank you guys! 😁🤙
You need to put pressure on the ring gear as you spin the pinion to get the proper pattern
Holy shit, most exciting project for me! :D Can't wait for the VR beast! Now you can go turbo with that rear axle. :)
This are the best videos in a long time this takes me back to the good old Hoonigan days when the boys would build they're own shit
Loving the series and the build! Fingers crossed y’all can make the VR6 work!
These episodes are fantastic, thanks!
a dream to all of us hahaha
86 rear axles are softer than butter, well done guys
As a truck guy I'm terribly jealous of the weight on that rear axle.
This is not garage garage, without Dan it simply is not, this is Project Garage, it just is what it is…….
Kinda amazing how clean the body of that car is
That diff is wicked!
That Toyo is gonna RIIIIIIP!!!
Definitely the most simplest build out of all the gymkhana grid cars. That being said, really hope Scotto can finish this build in time ie: not last minute
5:37 Nos 💙
Looking good Scott can't wait to see all you guys run gymkana in them loving watching the builds 🥰🥰🥰
Love this series more please 💪💪
Enjoyed this episode can’t wait to see Scotto finish it
2:24 You heard it here first from Hoonigan news: Fire is hot. Back to the studio. 😁😁😁
We are the leader in obviously obvious information.
I once broke The axle tube from the center section. Mig welded it back with basic wire and without pre heating. Held perfect for many track days still. Yours will definetly hold its own against the VR6 👌
Cool video - one of the best.
Those multi-index backing plates are a very neat idea - don't recall seeing those before.
It may run into binding issues, that could tend to turn it into an oversized ARB (swaybar), but if nothing breaks that could be a good thing - I'd suggest keeping an eye on the chassis and axle mountings, and making regular checks in the dog-leg links.
13:55 woh - shit! 😂 Like those birds that show up on security cameras looking right into the lens trying to figure out their reflection. 🤣
Scotto you gotta finish this project for the sake of my mental health!! Dont even think moving to another project.
rocking the safety squints
Brian went from D&D to celebrity chief real quick lol
Some solid progress, keep at it, mate.🎉
I now finally understand the “bell” sound going off on Vinny’s video while the exhaust was being built! 13:45
Nice work 💪💪🔥🔥
I believe in you Scotto, you gotta prove the internet wrong sometime.
U better finish this! I can't wait
Wearing my back Hoonigan shirt with Hoonigan crooked all down my right side. I had my Gymkhana Hill Climb sweatshirt in med stole from me and a lot of my Hoonigan gear. Thank you and I really can't wait to see a VR6 AE86!
Your content makes me happier and motivates me. Because of kids and health problems at 35. I want to be working alongside you. I am pushing myself. If I can't in 10 years, my kids will have plenty of help. I hope. Right now I'm in a studio and my car just got totaled by a guy with a 4 day old car. I had a dark gray honda fit. For mpg but it was invisible to most people. I walked up his rear wheel and flipped on my side. The cops didn't believe me when I said reflex kicked in and I cranked the wheel to the left to flip it back over. It wasn't a thought. It was muscle memory. I couldn't explain it. Plus I had a concussion. You guys are great!!!
Nice progress
Love how Scotto only looked at the coast side of the pattern 🤣🤣🤣 full send
Jameson really recalls his wisdom achieved. I do not know if that is really called science, but I was told the same when I became a tool maker. Thumbs up!
2:47 My Favorite 😂 Team Comes In after stuffing Their Bellies Because They Hear a Torch Light up 😂🔥
I've always like the old Corolla as I had a 81 baby blue interior and exterior 1.6 with an automatic that was grandma driven and got it for $480 CND and I blew the motor by spinning an oil bearing and gave it to the scrap yard at 16yrs old and when I watch this I am seeing things I dreamed of doing to mine. Now the motor auction that I wanted to go with was a 22RE or you can even go with the carbureted version intro some Weber's on it. But the 22RE is a 2.4L 4 cylinder beast that can easy push 300 and with that rear end you could build a stellar shift car.
Hell yeah dude, looks beefy
Good job scotto
Thank you for this vid. Gonna test out this nickel 55 wire
jameson is a beast in the shop
Yall need more lights in them shops I thought my brightness was low 😂
I use a ball joint press to push the wheel studs in
Never seen it damage to a hub from smacking in a stud 😂, hammer time mate 👍🏻
Garaaaaage garaaaaaage!!!!
Nickle 55 is Crip Mac's favorite alternative band!🤣
The eye is the best means of measuring
I build differentials everyday for a living and I love the smell of Ford xl-3 friction modifier
You need help.
i know this will get done cause of how excited brian is bout vw engine in a toyota lol pls finish it man i need to see a vr6 fit in there
Let's go Scotto! Still a VW kid from NY at heart.
I had a dream where I was parting out a old suburban to Scotto. Definitely peak dreamscape, but he had a flat cap on, I dont know how he feels on those but he looked like Jason Sudeikis and it felt too off to be reality so I woke up. 😂
💪
Scotto pumping out ae86 content 🎉
As a mid 40's life long Ford owner/fan I can confirm that friction modifier takes stinky gear oil to a level nobody wants to deal with.
Nice to see the BOSS lead the Minions by example, I can't wait to see the sneaky pete NOS he hides in the interior!!🦒
Jameson is a natural on camera. More of him in future episodes.
I think you will taco those tiny control arms before you break the plug welds on an 8.8
Hope everyone got their copy of the may 2023 PVW mag!
Knowledge is power
Where could I order one of these pre built like these or put in a order somewhere
🎉🎉
Why do they make it look so fun I know that was probably a pain in ass
This has the potential to be my favorite car. Period.
Nickel 55 is the welding wire of choice for C-Mac the Crip.
No going to lie… when the clip popped out of the vice and hit Scotto… I even jumped 😮
nice
You guys have to make a shirt that says Scotto’s math
Jameson totally missed the opportunity to yell "THAT'S A WRAP!" after wrapping the axle in thermo blankets... 😁
I keep 90W gear lube in a diffuser in my office.
So you're the Antichrist
You are a psychopath
excellent job guys, one question: I cut the rear axle of the Ford 8.8 to the same size as the rear axle of the AE86, how did you resolve the issue of the length of the axle shafts?
I am going to be doing this for my te72 soon. Not sure if it’s correct as I haven’t lined anything up or started but from my understanding one side of the axle housing is longer, longer axle. Only cut that side to match the shorter axle and use two passenger(or driver I don’t know which side it is) side axles. I plan to make a jig off my te72 at all the mounting points. Take out the rear end and put the 8.8 in the jig and weld the bracket in place. Not sure if they did it in the video but I plan to make some sort of jig for attaching and welding the axle tube back on. Fuck I might just wing it on that part I heard they aren’t straight from factory. But I don’t believe the shortened 8.8 will match the Corolla width. But it will fit and be close.
So next time just air hammer at those studs in it works really fast. I do have the tool and I do use it sometimes but air hammer is the easy way.
The ARP were a tad too thick and wouldn’t sit in the hole enough to get started.
🔥🙏🙌
Shiny side in silly goose
So sweet
Scotto the king of "Unfinished projects" doing the most complex build of everyone. ;)
“Simple VR6 Swap”
I use a transfer wire for the mig. From lincoln it's cor-a-rosta 309 p
that friction modifier is RANK
I welded my 8.8 tubes, lots of abuse in an xj on 35s and never had an issue. It's cast steel and not iron. Pre heat and post heat is the most important.
"if you have the money pay someone to do this..." Jameson is being paid to do this, and doesn't want to do it. Hahahaha!!!
I've had 8.8s in a couple Toyotas from supras to Cressida wagons
Which arp studs is he using ? Part #?
We do all of this when welding chrome pipe
Weight distribution also has to do with spring vs un-sprung weight… the motor is sprung weight, the axle is un-sprung, so the rear of the car will be more ‘planted’ than before due to the weight, whereas the front weight is progressive depending on suspension movement
True, but typically in road racing, you want less unsprung… So we will see.
Yurrr
Looking awesome Scotto! Bet your fingers will smell like death for a couple days cause of that gear oil lol. (When I was working on transmissions and gear sets, I used to put all the friction discs into fluid first thing in the morning or the previous night. Just how I was taught.)
Best quote “one eye scotto” seconds later almost losing an eye
I'm glad sh!t car is where it belongs after all the damage. Just hanging there to remind all of you and all of us how these channels started. RIP Sh!t car. Maybe to live again. Being on the wall is just nice for the OG fans and It deserves retirement. Lol glad you're back to your roots. I barely watched This vs That. Thank you for going back to the roots of Hoonigan.
Dig it. Scotto still channeling his inner nick blackhurst with his favourite kind of kill, well joint favourite with tyres…
